Long island concrete footing depths are suggested below frost line
By Mike Specchio
Footings have to be below the frost line in long island, weather can go below 0 in the winter months and the ground freezes and shifts especially clay type grounds that retain water. The water freezes and then melts and this process leads to ground movement.
The recommended depth to be below frost is 3 to 4 feet down in the ground measuring from the grounds natural existing grade. A spread footing is recommended if the footing is used for construction of a structure that is weight bearing. Reinforced rebar would further reinforce the footings and engineering drawings would be necessary to calculate the amount and the position of the rebar.
