When it comes to outdoor cooking, nothing compares to the rich flavor, aroma, and charm of food prepared in a Sedicioni Wood-Fired Oven. The crackling of the fire, the smoky scent that clings to the air, and the excitement of gathering friends and family around delicious food are all part of the magic. For many, however, the unpredictability of direct flame cooking can feel intimidating or impractical. That’s where the Sedicioni Outdoor Indirect Cooking Wood-Fired Oven comes in as a masterpiece that combines the tradition of wood-fired cooking with modern design and innovative functionality.

This isn’t just an oven. It’s the centerpiece of your outdoor kitchen, the ultimate tool for wood-fired perfection, and a reason to host unforgettable meals under the open sky.

sedicioni-wood-fired-oven-rossofuoco4A Smarter Way to Cook Outdoors

The Sedicioni oven is built around the principle of indirect cooking, which sets it apart in the crowded world of outdoor ovens. Unlike direct flame ovens, which can be uneven or difficult to control, the Sedicioni uses an intelligent system that channels heat evenly through radiant energy. This means your food cooks consistently—no more charred edges with undercooked centers.

And yes, it can still cook pizza beautifully. Thanks to its terracotta stone floor, pizzas come out with that signature crisp bottom and soft, airy crust. The fire burns below, heating the surface so thoroughly that every slice tastes like it came straight out of a traditional Italian pizzeria.

But the Sedicioni oven is not just about pizza. With two adjustable trays inside a square cooking chamber, you can prepare virtually anything, from roasted turkey and casseroles to cakes, artisan bread, and even slow-cooked meats that soak up the flavor of wood smoke. The spacious design allows side-by-side trays, unlike many ovens, where the narrow door limits you to one tray at a time.

Designed for Performance and Convenience Sedicioni Wood-Fired Oven

The Sedicioni oven is packed with features that make it a joy to use—not only for expert chefs but also for beginners discovering the joys of wood-fired cooking.

Fold-Down Glass Door

The oven’s door opens downward like a professional kitchen appliance, making it simple to access trays. Its glass design allows you to keep an eye on your food without losing heat.

Illuminated Cooking Chamber

Equipped with two internal lights, you’ll never need to guess whether your bread has risen or your roast has achieved that golden-brown perfection.

sedicioni-wood-fired-oven--outdoor-indirect-cooking-excellence-Convection Cooking with Dual Fans

Unlike traditional wood ovens, the Sedicioni features two powerful fans that circulate hot air, creating a genuine convection environment. This ensures your food cooks evenly from all sides, whether you’re making pizza in minutes or roasting a chicken for Sunday dinner.

Smoke & Vapor Control

Flavor and texture are in your hands. The oven features a vapor valve, allowing you to release steam when cooking water-rich dishes, such as casseroles or braises, to achieve drier, crisper results. Meanwhile, the smoke valve lets you trap smoke in the chamber, infusing meats and vegetables with authentic smoky flavor.

Easy Ash Removal

Managing a wood oven can sometimes feel messy, but not here. The Sedicioni’s fire tray can be pulled out easily, so removing ashes is quick, simple, and clean.

Illuminated Cooking Chamber for a better outdoor cooking experience

Built to Complement Your Outdoor Kitchen

Functionality is just the beginning—the Sedicioni oven is designed to look as good as it performs. Its sleek black finish, paired with stainless steel accents, blends seamlessly into modern outdoor kitchens, especially those featuring stainless steel grills, countertops, or cabinetry.

The stainless steel roof is more than just a visual highlight—it’s built to withstand the elements. Rain, heat, and time often take the heaviest toll on an oven’s roof, but Sedicioni’s durable design ensures lasting protection. For those who prefer a custom look, the roof can also be painted in a variety of colors.

Flexibility is another strong point. The oven can be:

  • Built into a masonry outdoor kitchen for a seamless, high-end design.
  • Mounted on a mobile cart with wheels, complete with storage for firewood. This makes it easy to move the oven when rearranging your patio or hosting events.

sedicioni-wood-fired-oven-rosso fuoco gauges Why Dry Wood Matters

Like any quality wood-fired oven, the Sedicioni thrives on dry wood. Using properly seasoned wood ensures consistent burning, better temperature control, and cleaner flavor without excess smoke. For anyone new to wood-fired cooking, this is one of the golden rules: dry wood makes excellent food.

We recently built a custom basketball court in Southampton, NY.  At Gappsi, we specialize in creating beautiful and functional outdoor living spaces, and one of our latest projects is a perfect example of craftsmanship, creativity, and attention to detail. Recently, we had the pleasure of designing and installing a custom basketball court in Southampton, NY, built to fit the homeowner’s unique space and style preferences. Using high-quality Mateflex tiles, a Dominator basketball hoop, and carefully planned design features, this court is not only practical for play but also a stunning addition to the property.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through the entire project from the design to the materials used.  We will also highlight why Mateflex basketball courts are such a popular choice for homeowners looking to elevate their outdoor living experience.

Planning Your Dream Backyard in Southampton

Creating your dream backyard is one of the most exciting home improvement projects you can take on. It’s about more than just adding a feature; it’s about designing a lifestyle. For homeowners in Southampton, a backyard oasis can mean a private retreat for quiet afternoons, a lively hub for family gatherings, or the perfect spot for summer entertaining. The centerpiece of this vision is often a beautiful inground pool, but the planning process involves much more. From selecting the right pool type to budgeting for landscaping and long-term maintenance, every detail matters. Thinking through these elements ahead of time ensures your final space is not only stunning but also functional and sustainable for years of enjoyment.

Choosing the Right Inground Pool for Your Home

The first major decision in your backyard transformation is choosing the type of inground pool. This choice affects everything from your initial budget and construction timeline to the look of your finished space and how much time you’ll spend on upkeep. The three main options are vinyl liner, fiberglass, and gunite, each with its own set of benefits. Your property’s specific conditions, your design preferences, and your budget will all play a role in determining the best fit. At Gappsi, we help homeowners find the perfect swimming pool by walking them through the pros and cons of each material, ensuring the foundation of their backyard oasis is exactly what they envisioned.

Vinyl Liner Pools

Vinyl liner pools are a popular and versatile option for many homeowners. They are constructed with a custom-fitted sheet of vinyl placed over a steel or polymer frame. One of the biggest draws of a vinyl liner pool is the initial cost, which is often lower than fiberglass or gunite. The liner itself is smooth to the touch and non-porous, which helps inhibit algae growth and simplifies cleaning. While the liner will need to be replaced every 8 to 12 years, modern vinyls are incredibly durable and come in a huge variety of colors and patterns, giving you plenty of design flexibility without a massive upfront investment.

Fiberglass Pools

If low maintenance and durability are at the top of your list, a fiberglass pool is an excellent choice. These pools are pre-molded in a factory and delivered to your home in one piece, which can significantly shorten the installation time. The surface of a fiberglass pool is smooth and non-porous, making it resistant to algae and gentle on your skin. This also means you’ll likely spend less time and money on chemicals over the life of the pool. While the initial cost can be higher than vinyl, many homeowners find the long-term savings and ease of care to be a worthwhile trade-off for their busy lifestyles.

Gunite Pools

For those who want complete creative control, gunite pools offer limitless design possibilities. Gunite is a mixture of cement, sand, and water that is sprayed onto a rebar framework, allowing you to create a pool in any shape or size you can imagine. This makes it the perfect choice for unique backyard layouts or for adding custom features like built-in benches, tanning ledges, and intricate water features. While gunite pools typically have the highest initial cost and require more intensive maintenance, their durability and design flexibility are unmatched, allowing you to build a truly one-of-a-kind backyard masterpiece.

Understanding the Cost of an Inground Pool Installation

When budgeting for a new pool, it’s important to look beyond the price of the pool itself. The total cost includes the installation, but also a range of other essential and optional expenses that bring your vision to life. These can include everything from the surrounding patio and landscaping to safety fencing and lighting. Understanding these additional costs upfront helps you create a realistic budget and avoid surprises down the road. A comprehensive plan accounts for not just the construction but also the finishing touches that make your pool area a complete and cohesive outdoor living space. This foresight ensures you can build the backyard you want without compromising on quality or safety.

Average Installation Costs

The initial installation cost of an inground pool varies widely based on the material you choose. Each type has a different price point for the basic package, which typically includes the pool shell, pump, and filter system. These figures provide a solid starting point for your budget, but remember that factors like site accessibility, soil conditions, and local permit fees can also influence the final price. It’s always best to get a detailed quote that breaks down all the included elements so you know exactly what you’re paying for before construction begins.

Vinyl, Fiberglass, and Gunite Price Ranges

Generally, you can expect vinyl liner pools to have the lowest upfront installation cost, often ranging from $50,000 to $80,000. Fiberglass pools fall in the middle, with average installation costs between $65,000 and $100,000, reflecting their factory-built quality and quicker installation time. Gunite pools sit at the higher end of the spectrum, typically starting at $75,000 and going well over $150,000, depending on the complexity of the custom design. These ranges are estimates, but they give you a clear idea of how your choice of material will impact your initial investment.

Additional Installation Expenses to Consider

Beyond the pool itself, several other components are necessary to complete your project. These additional expenses are what transform a simple swimming pool into a fully functional and beautiful backyard retreat. From the hardscaping that defines the space to the safety features required by law, each element plays a critical role. Planning for these items from the start ensures a seamless installation process and a finished product that is both safe and stunning. Thinking about these details early on allows you to integrate them perfectly into your overall design.

Pool Decking and Landscaping

The area around your pool is just as important as the pool itself. Pool decking, or the patio area, provides space for lounging and entertaining. Upgraded materials like natural stone or elegant porcelain pavers can add between $10,000 and $25,000 to your budget. Thoughtful landscaping softens the hardscape and integrates the pool into your yard. Gappsi’s expert masonry and landscape design teams can help you create a cohesive look that complements both your home and your new pool.

Fencing and Safety Features

Safety is a top priority for any pool owner. Most municipalities, including those in Long Island, require a fence of a certain height to enclose the pool area to prevent accidents. The cost for fencing can range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the material and length you need. Gappsi offers a variety of fencing options, from classic aluminum to modern composite, to meet safety codes while enhancing your backyard’s aesthetic. This is a non-negotiable part of your budget that ensures peace of mind.

Heating Systems and Automatic Covers

To extend your swimming season into the cooler months, a heating system is a great investment, typically costing between $4,000 and $8,000. An automatic pool cover, which can run from $3,000 to $7,000, offers multiple benefits. It not only improves safety by covering the water’s surface but also helps retain heat, reduces water evaporation, and keeps debris out of the pool. Together, these features add convenience and allow you to get more use out of your pool throughout the year.

Lighting, Water Features, and Automation

Modern features can truly personalize your pool experience. LED lighting creates ambiance for evening swims, while water features like waterfalls or deck jets add sound and visual appeal. Pool automation systems allow you to control everything from the pump and heater to the lights and water features right from your smartphone. These enhancements add another layer of luxury and convenience, turning your pool into a high-tech oasis that is easy to manage and a joy to use day or night.

Long-Term Ownership and Maintenance Costs

Your financial planning shouldn’t stop once the pool is built. Owning a pool comes with ongoing maintenance costs that are important to factor into your annual household budget. These expenses include everything from chemicals and electricity to occasional repairs and eventual equipment replacement. Being aware of these long-term costs from the beginning ensures that you can comfortably afford to keep your pool in pristine condition, protecting your investment and guaranteeing it remains a source of enjoyment for your family for many years.

Annual Upkeep for Chemicals and Electricity

Every year, you’ll need to budget for the essentials that keep your pool clean and running. Water chemicals, including chlorine, pH balancers, and algaecide, can cost between $500 and $1,000 annually. The electricity needed to run the pump and filter is another significant expense, typically ranging from $500 to $2,500 per year, depending on the size of your pool and how often you run the equipment. These predictable costs are a fundamental part of pool ownership.

Future Replacement Costs

Over time, certain parts of your pool will need to be replaced. If you choose a vinyl liner pool, for example, you should plan on replacing the liner every 8 to 12 years, which can cost between $5,000 and $7,000. Other equipment, like the pump or heater, will also eventually wear out. Setting aside a small amount each year for these future expenses is a smart way to prepare, so you’re not caught off guard when a major replacement is needed.

Key Considerations Before You Commit

Installing a pool is a major commitment of both time and money, so it’s wise to think through a few key questions before breaking ground. Beyond the excitement of design and construction, practical considerations about your long-term plans and finances will help you make a decision you’ll be happy with for years to come. Taking a moment to reflect on how a pool fits into your lifestyle and your home’s future value is a crucial step. This ensures that your investment aligns with your personal and financial goals, making the entire process smoother and more rewarding.

Financial Planning for Your Pool

Before moving forward, take a hard look at your finances. A pool is a significant investment, and it’s important to ensure it fits comfortably within your budget, including the ongoing maintenance costs. Also, consider how long you plan to stay in your home. While a pool adds value, it can take five to ten years to see a substantial return on your investment. If you see yourself moving in the near future, you may not recoup the full cost, so it’s important to weigh the immediate lifestyle benefits against the long-term financial picture.

Thinking About Long-Term Use and Home Value

Think about how your family will use the pool now and in the future. Will it be a hub for kids and their friends, a quiet spot for relaxation, or a centerpiece for entertaining? Your intended use can influence design choices. A pool can certainly increase your property’s appeal and resale value, especially in a desirable area like Southampton. However, its primary value should be the enjoyment it brings to you and your family. A well-designed and properly maintained pool is an asset that enhances both your lifestyle and your home.

Beyond the Pool: Creating a Complete Outdoor Oasis

A swimming pool is often the star of the show, but the supporting elements are what create a truly complete outdoor oasis. Think about how you want to use the entire space. Do you envision a cozy fire pit for cool evenings, an outdoor kitchen for alfresco dining, or a comfortable lounge area under a pergola? Integrating these features creates different “zones” for various activities, making your backyard more versatile and inviting. Gappsi specializes in designing and building comprehensive outdoor living environments, ensuring every element, from the pavilions to the patios, works together in harmony.

Adding a Custom Sports Court

To make your backyard the ultimate destination for fun and activity, consider adding a custom sports court. A basketball court, pickleball court, or multi-game surface can provide endless entertainment for all ages and perfectly complements a pool area. As we did for a recent project in Southampton, we can design a court that fits your specific space and aesthetic preferences. Using high-quality materials like Mateflex tiles, we can build a durable, safe, and attractive court that turns your backyard into a private resort. Check out our synthetic turf and game courts to see how you can add another layer of recreation to your outdoor oasis.

custom-basketball-court-installation-in-southampton-ny-4A Custom-Designed Court for the Homeowner’s Needs

Not every property has the same space available for a full-sized basketball court, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the game. For this Southampton project, we designed a custom-sized court to maximize the area while still keeping the game authentic and fun.

The court includes a 3-point line, although it was slightly scaled down to fit the available space. This gives the homeowners and their guests the whole basketball experience.  Shooting, dribbling, and gameplay while making the most of the property layout.

The Mateflex Tile System

The foundation of this project lies in the Mateflex tile system, one of the most trusted names in sports flooring. For this installation, we first prepared an asphalt base, ensuring a smooth and solid surface for durability. Then, we installed Mateflex TopCourt tiles, designed explicitly for outdoor basketball courts.

What makes Mateflex tiles so special?

  • Shock Absorption & Comfort – They reduce stress on joints, making the game more enjoyable and safer.
  • All-Weather Durability – The tiles are resistant to weather extremes, from summer heat to winter frost, ensuring longevity.
  • Low Maintenance – They are easy to clean, resistant to fading, and require little upkeep compared to traditional surfaces.
  • Performance Quality – With excellent ball response and traction, they mimic the feel of a professional basketball surface.

custom-basketball-court-installation-in-southampton-ny-3For this Southampton project, the homeowners chose a vibrant color scheme that brought the court to life:

  • Red tiles for the border.
  • Navy blue tiles for the inlay.
  • Royal blue tiles for the keys.

The contrast of bold blues against the striking red border created a modern, eye-catching design. To finish it off, we carefully added white striping to outline the court lines, ensuring both style and function.

The Dominator 72-Inch Adjustable Basketball Hoop

A court is only as good as the hoop that goes with it. For this installation, we installed a Dominator 72-inch basketball hoop, one of the top choices for residential courts.

What sets this hoop apart is its adjustability. Players of all ages and skill levels can enjoy the court by lowering or raising the hoop to the desired height. Whether kids are practicing layups or adults are playing a competitive game, the Dominator hoop is built for performance and durability. Made with heavy-duty materials, it can withstand the demands of daily use while maintaining its sleek, professional look.

Custom basketball court with Dominator basketball hoopSports Game Court Netting and Court Surroundings

One of the challenges of building a backyard court is keeping the ball contained. To solve this, we surrounded the Southampton court with out-of-bounds netting on three sides. This netting ensures that basketballs stay within the play area, reducing the chance of lost balls and protecting the surrounding property.

In addition to functionality, aesthetics were also a priority for this project. We built a Cumaru wood wall on one side of the court. While the netting provides containment, the Cumaru wall offers a warm, natural design element that complements the outdoor setting. Cumaru wood, known for its durability and rich color, serves as both a functional barrier and a beautiful architectural feature.

Synthetic Fringe for a Finished Look

Attention to detail is what truly elevates a project. To complete the basketball court design, we added a 1-foot-wide synthetic turf fringe around the entire perimeter. This not only frames the court beautifully but also provides a clean, polished transition from the playing surface to the surrounding landscape. The turf creates a softer edge, reducing dirt and debris from tracking onto the court, while enhancing the overall visual appeal.

This Southampton project is a perfect example of why Mateflex courts are a growing trend among homeowners. Here are some of the top benefits:

  1. Customization – Whether you have a large property or a smaller backyard, Mateflex courts can be designed to fit your space.
  2. Durability – Built to withstand heavy use and harsh weather, these courts are long-lasting investments.
  3. Safety & Comfort – With shock-absorbing properties, they help protect players’ joints and minimize injury risk.
  4. Aesthetic Appeal – With endless color combinations and design possibilities, you can create a court that’s as stylish as it is functional.
  5. Value Addition – A backyard basketball court adds significant value to a home, appealing to both current homeowners and future buyers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I decide between a pool and a sports court if I only have room for one? This really comes down to your family’s lifestyle. Think about how you want to spend your time outdoors. A pool is fantastic for relaxing, cooling off on hot days, and low-impact exercise. A sports court, on the other hand, is all about active play and friendly competition. Consider who will use the space most and what activity will bring your family the most joy on a regular basis.

What is the most overlooked cost when installing an inground pool? Many people budget for the pool and the patio right around it, but they often underestimate the cost of landscaping and site work. Creating a cohesive look involves more than just the pool itself; it includes grading the surrounding yard for proper drainage, adding plants and trees for privacy and beauty, and installing lighting. These finishing touches are what truly create an oasis, so it’s wise to include them in your initial budget.

The basketball court in the article was custom-sized. How small can a court be and still be fun to play on? You don’t need a regulation-sized court to have a great time. A well-designed half-court or even just a dedicated shooting area with a 3-point line can provide hours of fun and practice. The key is smart design that makes the most of your available yard. We can scale a court to fit your specific dimensions while ensuring it remains a functional and enjoyable space for play.

In simple terms, what’s the real difference in upkeep for the three pool types? Think of it this way: fiberglass pools are the lowest maintenance, as their smooth, non-porous surface resists algae and requires fewer chemicals. Vinyl liner pools are also relatively easy to care for day-to-day, but you will need to plan for replacing the liner every 8 to 12 years. Gunite pools demand the most attention, as their porous surface requires more brushing, more chemicals to stay balanced, and may eventually need to be resurfaced.

Can you handle my entire backyard project, or do I need to hire separate contractors for the pool, patio, and landscaping? We can absolutely manage the entire project from start to finish. Our specialty is creating complete, cohesive outdoor living spaces. This means our team handles everything from the initial design and permits to the pool installation, masonry, court construction, and final landscaping. Having one team oversee the whole process ensures every element works together beautifully and saves you the headache of coordinating multiple contractors.

Key Takeaways

  • Budget for the entire project, not just the pool: A realistic financial plan for an inground pool includes the initial installation plus essential extras like decking, safety fencing, and landscaping, along with long-term costs for maintenance and utilities.
  • Choose a pool material that fits your lifestyle: Each pool type (vinyl, fiberglass, or gunite) comes with different costs, maintenance requirements, and design possibilities, so it’s important to select the one that aligns with your budget and aesthetic goals.
  • Create a complete oasis with complementary features: A pool is a fantastic centerpiece, but integrating other elements like a custom sports court, a pavilion, or an outdoor kitchen is what creates a truly functional and enjoyable outdoor living space.

Rossofuoco Clessidra Outdoor Wood-Fired Oven | Direct & Indirect Cooking

View Gappsi’s YouTube Channel & Discover the Outdoor Wood-Fired Oven That Changes Everything: The Rossofuoco Clessidra

If you love the art of outdoor cooking, there’s nothing quite like the flavor, experience, and tradition of cooking with a wood-fired oven. But if you’ve ever tried one, you know the challenges, uneven heating, undercooked pizza bases, food that smokes too much, or ovens that don’t perform the way you hoped. That’s where the Rossofuoco Clessidra Outdoor Wood-Fired Oven comes in.

Today, we’re excited to introduce you to this Italian-made masterpiece.  Our latest addition is what we genuinely believe is the best outdoor wood-burning oven available today. Designed to combine tradition, innovation, and unmatched functionality, the Clessidra solves the problems many homeowners face with their outdoor ovens.

Whether you’re a pizza enthusiast, a backyard chef, or someone who loves hosting, this oven is going to transform the way you cook.

rossofuoco-clessidra-outdoor-wood-fired-oven--direct--indirect-cooking-7Why Choose the Rossofuoco Clessidra?

Many outdoor cooking fans share the same story:

  • They bought a wood-fired oven that didn’t live up to expectations.
  • They found it challenging to master cooking techniques.
  • They were frustrated by inconsistent results.

The Clessidra is the solution to all these struggles. Manufactured in Italy, a country known for centuries of culinary excellence.  This oven blends authentic craftsmanship with modern innovation. It’s not just another pizza oven; it’s a versatile cooking system that supports both direct and indirect cooking methods.

Direct Cooking vs. Indirect Cooking

One of the Clessidra’s most impressive features is its dual functionality. You can cook in two completely different ways, depending on what you’re making.

Direct Cooking with the Outdoor Wood-Fired Oven

Direct cooking means preparing food right in the chamber where the fire is located. Think of it like a traditional wood-fired pizza oven. You place your wood inside, light the fire, and cook foods like pizza, steak, or bread directly in the chamber. The result? Crispy crusts, perfectly seared meats, and that smoky, wood-fired flavor everyone loves.

rossofuoco-clessidra-outdoor-wood-fired-oven--direct--indirect-cooking-3Indirect Cooking with the Outdoor Wood-Fired Oven

Indirect cooking, on the other hand, is perfect for foods that need steady, even heat. The fire is placed below, not inside, the cooking chamber. That means dishes like lasagna, casseroles, or roasts cook evenly without being exposed directly to flames. The oven features trays that enable you to position your food in the top chamber, where heat rises from below and circulates through, exiting through the chimney.

With this flexibility, you can cook just about anything—crispy pizzas one moment, delicate baked dishes the next—all with the same oven.

The Rossofuoco Clessidra’s Unique Features

What makes this oven truly stand out is the thoughtful engineering and attention to detail.

Built-in Thermostat, Timer, and Light

The Clessidra isn’t just old-world tradition; it’s innovation. It comes equipped with a thermostat, a timer, and something most outdoor ovens lack: a built-in light.

If you’ve ever tried to cook outside at night, you know how frustrating it can be to peek inside a dark oven. With the Clessidra, you’ll always have a clear view of your food, no matter the time of day.

rossofuoco-clessidra-outdoor-wood-fired-oven--direct--indirect-cooking-4Dual Heating for Endless Cooking

One of the common frustrations with wood-fired ovens is that after cooking a few pizzas, the cooking floor cools down. That often leaves you with pizzas that are perfectly cooked on top but raw on the bottom.

The Clessidra solves this problem by letting you feed the fire from below while cooking directly inside the chamber. This keeps the oven floor hot, allowing you to cook hundreds of pizzas without interruption.  Perfect for parties and family gatherings.

Smoke Control System

Love the flavor of smoke, but not all the time? The Clessidra gives you control. When cooking directly, you can block about 90% of the smoke from exiting the chimney, letting it circulate inside the chamber for a smoky touch. It’s a fantastic feature for meats, roasts, or anything you’d like to infuse with that distinct wood-fired aroma.

Adjustable Doors

Both the top and bottom doors can be closed at all times, and each is designed to let you adjust how much fresh air enters the oven. This gives you precision control over temperature and cooking style. This is something not often found in standard outdoor ovens.

Everything You Need, Included

Bluestone Coping Color Change and Sealing Natural Stone Patio: What You Need to Know

View Gappsi’s YouTube Channel for Videos of Bluestone Coping Color Change and Sealing Natural Stone Patio: What You Need to Know

Two of the most common topics homeowners ask about are Bluestone Coping Color Change and Sealing Natural Stone Patio. Understanding why these changes occur, what you can do about them, and how sealing plays a vital role in preserving the beauty of your stonework will save you money, time, and frustration in the long run.

Natural stone has long been a top choice for homeowners seeking elegance, durability, and timeless appeal in their outdoor spaces. From patios to pool decks, stone surfaces bring character and charm that concrete or manufactured products cannot match. However, as with any natural material, maintenance is essential to keep stone looking its best year after year.

Why Does Bluestone Coping Color Change?

If you’ve invested in bluestone for your pool coping or patio edges, you’ve probably noticed that the color can look different over time. Bluestone is known for its deep blue-gray tones, sometimes mixed with hints of rust, green, or even purple. While these variations are part of the natural beauty, they can sometimes shift in ways homeowners don’t expect.

bluestone-coping-color-change-and-sealing-the-natural-stone-patio3Factors Behind the Color Change:

  1. Moisture Retention
Bluestone is porous, meaning it naturally absorbs water. Around a pool, constant splashing or standing water may cause dark spots to form. Over time, this moisture can alter the tone of the coping, making it appear darker or blotchy.
  2. Weather and Sun Exposure
UV rays from the sun gradually fade or change the appearance of natural stone. Depending on the stone’s mineral makeup, bluestone may lighten in some areas while appearing more weathered in others.
  3. Efflorescence
This is a common phenomenon in which minerals within the stone migrate to the surface as water evaporates. Efflorescence often leaves behind a whitish haze that can change the overall color tone.
  4. Chemical Exposure
Around pools, coping often comes into contact with chlorine, salt, or cleaning chemicals. These substances may react with the minerals in the bluestone, contributing to unexpected color changes.

Is Bluestone Coping Color Change Permanent?

Not always. In many cases, the color change is superficial and can be corrected through cleaning and sealing. However, if the stone has absorbed minerals or been permanently altered by weathering, the change may become part of its natural patina.

The Importance of Sealing the Natural Stone Patio

While color changes in bluestone coping are a common concern, homeowners also need to pay attention to their patios. Sealing is one of the most critical steps in protecting and preserving any natural stone installation.

Sealing bluestone coping around poolsWhat Does Sealing Do?

Sealing creates a protective barrier on or within the stone that helps prevent water absorption, staining, and damage. Since natural stone is porous, sealing reduces the risk of discoloration, mold, algae growth, and chemical wear.

Benefits of Sealing the Natural Stone Patio:

  1. Prevents Staining
From spilled drinks during a barbecue to fallen leaves that release tannins, patios are exposed to plenty of staining agents. A good sealer keeps these substances from penetrating the stone.
  2. Enhances Natural Colors
Sealing often deepens and enriches the natural colors of the stone, giving patios and pool areas a “wet look” that highlights their beauty.
  3. Protects Against Weathering
Rain, snow, and ice cycles can break down stone surfaces over time. Sealing minimizes water absorption, which reduces cracking and spalling.
  4. Easier Cleaning
A sealed patio is far easier to maintain. Dirt, debris, and algae can be rinsed off with less effort since they don’t embed themselves deeply in the stone.
  5. Extends Longevity
By reducing damage from UV rays, chemicals, and water, sealing extends the life of your patio investment by years.

Bluestone Sealers: Best Protection and MaintenanceBest Practices for Sealing the Natural Stone Patio

If you’ve noticed your bluestone coping changing color or your patio starting to look dull, sealing may be the solution. Here are a few best practices to follow:

  1. Start with a Professional Cleaning
Before sealing, the stone must be cleaned thoroughly. Pressure washing, efflorescence removal, or special cleaners may be needed to restore the original appearance.
  2. Choose the Right Sealer
There are two main types of sealers:
  • Penetrating Sealers: absorb into the stone to create an invisible barrier without altering its appearance.
  • Topical Sealers: Sit on top of the surface and often enhance color with a glossy or matte finish.

For bluestone coping and patios, penetrating sealers are often recommended for lasting protection.

  • Reapply as Needed
Sealing is not a one-time job. Depending on usage, climate, and exposure, most natural stone patios need resealing every 2–4 years.
  • Test a Small Area First
Since sealers can alter the look of stone, always test on a hidden section before applying it across the entire surface.

Combining Solutions: Coping Color Change and Patio Sealing

The issues of Bluestone Coping Color Change and Sealing the Natural Stone Patio are closely related. Both aim to preserve the stone’s natural beauty while preventing long-term damage.

  • If your coping has already changed color, a deep cleaning followed by sealing can often restore and protect it.
  • If your patio still looks excellent, sealing now will ensure it stays that way, preventing future discoloration and wear.
  • In both cases, routine maintenance—such as sweeping, rinsing, and checking for standing water—will help your investment last longer.

When to Call a Professional

While DIY sealing products are available, homeowners often find better results by hiring a professional stone restoration and sealing service. Experts know how to identify the exact causes of discoloration, use the correct cleaners, and apply the best sealer for your specific type of stone.

A professional can also assess whether your bluestone coping is experiencing natural patina development or a problem that needs correcting. In some cases, advanced treatments such as color enhancers or specialty sealers can bring out the stone’s best qualities while masking imperfections.

bluestone-coping-color-change-and-sealing-the-natural-stone-patioYour outdoor living space is an extension of your home, and the natural stone you’ve chosen deserves proper care. Bluestone Coping Color Change is a natural process, but with the proper cleaning and maintenance, it doesn’t have to diminish the beauty of your pool or patio. Meanwhile, Sealing the Natural Stone Patio is one of the best preventive measures you can take to protect your investment for years to come.

By understanding how these issues are connected and committing to regular maintenance, you can enjoy the elegance of natural stone with peace of mind—knowing it will continue to look stunning season after season.

Pool Installation Commack: A Step-by-Step Guide

Building a pool on Long Island comes with its own unique set of challenges. That’s why hiring a local expert is so important. An experienced builder understands the specific hurdles of the area, from navigating the permit rules in different towns to dealing with our local soil conditions. A contractor who knows the region can anticipate potential issues and plan accordingly, saving you time, money, and headaches. This local expertise is invaluable for ensuring your project is built correctly and to code. Here, we’ll cover the key considerations for a pool installation Commack to ensure a smooth and successful project.

View Gappsi’s YouTube Channel for Videos of Commercial Gunite Swimming Pool Installation in Commack, NY – Sutton Landing Over-55 Community

When it comes to creating outdoor spaces that combine luxury, safety, and functionality, a Commercial Gunite Swimming Pool is one of the best investments a community can make. At Gappsi, we specialize in designing and building high-quality pools.  They are tailored to the specific needs of both residential and commercial properties. Our latest project took us to Commack, NY. We had the privilege of installing a stunning gunite swimming pool for the Sutton Landing community, catering to residents over 55.

This project showcases not only our craftsmanship but also our dedication to designing pools.  This serves both recreational and therapeutic purposes for community members. Below, we’ll walk you through the design, features, and benefits of this pool installation.  In addition, gunite pools remain the top choice for commercial communities.

Project Overview: A Pool Designed for Community Living

At Sutton Landing in Commack, the management team sought to offer their residents a pool that was both aesthetically pleasing and functional. We designed and installed a 20×40 Commercial Gunite Swimming Pool, perfectly sized for community use.

The pool has a depth of 4 feet 8 inches at the deep end and 3 feet at the shallow end, making it safe and accessible for a wide range of users. Since this is an over-55 community, safety and accessibility were two of the highest priorities during the design process.

Choosing the Right Inground Pool for Your Long Island Home

Deciding to install an inground pool is a huge step toward creating your dream backyard. But before you start picturing those sunny afternoons, you’ll need to choose the right type of pool for your home, budget, and lifestyle. On Long Island, homeowners generally choose from three main types: gunite, vinyl liner, and fiberglass. Each has its own set of benefits and considerations, from total design freedom to speed of installation. Understanding the differences is the first step in making a choice you’ll be happy with for years to come. Your decision will impact everything from the initial cost and construction timeline to long-term maintenance.

Gunite Pools: The Ultimate in Customization

If you can dream it, you can probably build it with gunite. This is the go-to choice for homeowners who want a completely custom pool. Gunite pools are built on-site by spraying a mixture of concrete and sand over a grid of steel reinforcement. Because they aren’t limited to pre-fabricated shapes, gunite pools are highly customizable, allowing for unique shapes, sizes, and features like built-in waterfalls, tanning ledges, or integrated spas. This is the type of pool we installed at the Sutton Landing community, as it gave us the flexibility to design a pool that perfectly suited the residents’ needs. The durable plaster finish comes in various colors and textures, offering a high-end look that lasts for decades with proper care.

Vinyl Liner Pools: A Popular and Flexible Option

Vinyl liner pools are a very popular option, largely because they tend to have a lower initial installation cost. These pools are constructed with wall panels, typically made of steel or polymer, and a custom-fitted vinyl liner that forms the pool’s surface. While they offer a good amount of flexibility in shape and size, they are not quite as customizable as gunite. A basic vinyl pool package is affordable, but remember that adding features like water slides, special lighting, or landscaping will increase the price. The biggest long-term consideration is the liner itself, which typically needs to be replaced every 7 to 10 years, adding a recurring cost to the lifetime ownership of the pool.

Fiberglass Pools: Quick Installation and Smooth Finishes

For those who want to be swimming as soon as possible, fiberglass pools are an excellent choice. These pools are manufactured off-site as a single shell and then delivered to your home and set into the excavated hole. This process makes installation incredibly fast—sometimes in just a few days. The surface of a fiberglass pool is a smooth gel coat, which is non-porous, making it resistant to algae growth and gentle on your feet. The main drawback is the lack of customization. Because they have to be transported by road, fiberglass pools have shipping limits and usually can’t be wider than 16 feet, which can be a dealbreaker if you’re envisioning a large, uniquely shaped backyard oasis.

Understanding Pool Installation Costs in Commack

Let’s talk about the big question: how much does an inground pool cost? On Long Island, the price can vary significantly based on the type of pool you choose, its size, and the features you add. A custom inground pool in the Commack area typically costs between $50,000 and over $100,000. This range covers everything from the pool itself to the necessary equipment, excavation, and installation. However, it’s also important to think about the complete project. Features like a surrounding patio, fencing, and landscaping are often essential parts of the final vision and will contribute to the overall budget. At Gappsi, we help homeowners plan for the entire outdoor space, ensuring the pool is perfectly integrated with beautiful masonry and functional landscape design.

General Cost Estimates for Inground Pools

Breaking down the costs helps clarify what you can expect. Vinyl liner pools generally have the lowest upfront cost, making them an accessible entry point for many homeowners. Fiberglass pools sit in the middle of the price range, offering a balance of durability and quicker installation. Gunite pools typically represent the highest initial investment due to the custom, labor-intensive construction process. Beyond the pool itself, remember to budget for essentials like a safety cover, filtration system, and lighting. Optional upgrades, such as a heater, a salt-water system, or automated cleaning systems, will also add to the final price tag.

Costs by Pool Size and Type

Your budget will be the primary guide in determining the type and size of your pool. For a budget under $50,000, your options might be limited to a smaller, standard-shape vinyl liner pool, potentially as a DIY kit, though we always recommend professional installation. As your budget increases into the $70,000 to $90,000 range, you can start looking at high-quality fiberglass pools or more customized vinyl liner options with some added features. Once you cross the $100,000 threshold, you enter the realm of custom gunite pools, where you can design a one-of-a-kind backyard resort with premium materials and integrated features.

What Your Budget Can Get You

To put it in perspective, a moderate budget can get you a beautiful, functional pool that will be the centerpiece of your summer. This might look like a medium-sized fiberglass pool with a simple concrete or paver patio. As you invest more, you can incorporate more luxurious elements. A higher-end budget allows for a large, freeform gunite pool with a stunning porcelain paver patio, a cascading waterfall, and an attached spa. The best way to understand what’s possible is to have a detailed conversation with a pool designer. Experts can help you explore options and create a plan that aligns your vision with your budget, ensuring there are no surprises along the way.

Planning for Lifetime Pool Ownership Costs

The initial purchase price is just one part of the equation. To be a happy pool owner, you need to plan for the lifetime costs of maintenance and upkeep. These annual expenses include chemicals, electricity to run the pump and filter, and professional opening and closing services. It’s also wise to set aside funds for eventual repairs or replacements. For instance, while a vinyl liner pool is cheaper upfront, you’ll need to factor in the cost of replacing the liner every seven years or so. Gunite pools may need to be resurfaced every 10 to 15 years, while fiberglass pools generally have the lowest long-term maintenance costs.

Financing Your Pool Project

A new pool is a significant investment in your home, and many homeowners choose to finance the project. This is a completely normal and practical approach to funding your backyard transformation. In fact, many people use loans to pay for their pools, making the dream accessible without depleting savings. Common financing options include a home equity loan, a home equity line of credit (HELOC), or a personal loan from a bank or credit union. Some pool construction companies also partner with lenders to offer financing options directly to their clients. It’s always a good idea to explore your options and find a solution that you’re comfortable with.

The Pool Construction Process from Start to Finish

Once you’ve chosen your pool type and finalized the design, it’s time for the construction to begin. This is where your backyard is transformed from a patch of grass into a personal oasis. The process can seem daunting, but with the right team, it’s a well-orchestrated series of steps. A full-service company will handle the entire pool construction process, from securing permits to the final plaster coat and startup. At Gappsi, we manage every detail of the project, including coordinating our expert pool installers with our masonry and landscape crews to create a seamless and stress-free experience for you. This integrated approach ensures that every element of your new backyard works together beautifully.

A Step-by-Step Project Timeline

Every pool project follows a general timeline. It starts with the final design approval and securing the necessary building permits from your town. Next comes the excavation, where the shape of your pool is dug out. After that, the structural work begins: steel rebar is installed for a gunite pool, or the wall panels or fiberglass shell is set in place. This is followed by the installation of plumbing and electrical lines. Once the core structure is ready, the surrounding patio and decking are built. The final steps involve finishing the pool’s interior—applying plaster for gunite or setting the liner—and then filling it with water, balancing the chemicals, and starting up the equipment.

When Is the Best Time to Build a Pool on Long Island?

While you can technically build a pool at any time of year, timing can make a big difference. To ensure your pool is ready for swimming by Memorial Day, the best time to start construction is in the early spring, around March or April. However, the planning process should begin much earlier. We recommend meeting with designers in the fall or winter. This gives you plenty of time to finalize your design, select materials, and get your permits in order before the busy spring rush begins. Starting early ensures you get on a reputable builder’s schedule and avoids potential delays, so you can be the first one in the water when summer arrives.

Navigating Local Building Codes and Soil Conditions

Building a pool on Long Island comes with its own unique set of challenges. That’s why hiring a local expert is so important. An experienced Long Island builder will understand the specific challenges of the area, from navigating the permit rules in different municipalities to dealing with our local soil conditions, which can include high water tables, sand, or clay. A contractor who knows the local landscape can anticipate potential issues and plan accordingly, saving you time, money, and headaches. This local expertise is invaluable for ensuring your pool is built correctly and to code, providing a safe and durable structure for your family to enjoy.

Why Professional Installation Is a Must

While the idea of a DIY project can be tempting for some, installing an inground pool is not the place to cut corners. The complexity of the project—involving heavy excavation, intricate plumbing, high-voltage electrical work, and precise structural engineering—requires professional expertise. As experts often advise, mistakes during installation can be incredibly costly and lead to major structural problems down the road. Hiring a licensed and insured professional protects your investment and ensures the safety of your family. A professional builder like Gappsi not only provides the technical skill but also offers warranties on their workmanship, giving you peace of mind that your new pool is built to last.

Key Design Elements of the Sutton Landing Pool

When designing the pool for Sutton Landing, our primary goal was to create a space that felt both luxurious and perfectly suited to the community’s lifestyle. The pool measures 20×40 feet, a dimension we chose carefully to strike the ideal balance. It’s large enough to accommodate multiple residents comfortably, whether they’re swimming laps for exercise or simply relaxing with neighbors on a sunny afternoon. This size transforms the pool from a simple amenity into a central social hub for the community. This project is a perfect example of how we approach all our swimming pool installations—by considering how the space will actually be used to enhance daily life.

Safety and accessibility were the cornerstones of this design, especially given that Sutton Landing is a community for residents over 55. We engineered the pool with a shallow end of 3 feet, which gradually slopes to a maximum depth of 4 feet 8 inches. This gentle incline ensures that residents of all mobility and swimming levels can enter and enjoy the water with confidence. It eliminates the steep drop-offs found in older pools, making it a welcoming environment for everyone. This thoughtful approach to depth and dimension reflects our commitment at Gappsi to not only build beautiful structures but to create safe, functional, and enjoyable spaces for years to come.

commercial-gunite-swimming-pool-installation-in-commack-ny3Accessibility Features: Built for Everyone

Accessibility is essential for a Commercial Gunite Swimming Pool, particularly in a senior living environment. We installed rounded-corner stairs in the shallow area for easy entry and exit. The rounded design minimizes sharp edges, adding both comfort and safety for swimmers.

Additionally, we have included a pool lift to accommodate individuals with mobility challenges. This feature ensures that every resident, regardless of physical ability, has the opportunity to enjoy the pool. Accessibility upgrades like these are not only thoughtful but also align with ADA compliance standards for commercial pool installations.

Finishes and Materials: A Pool Built to Last

Durability and low maintenance are key factors in commercial pool construction. For this project, we lined the pool below the coping with premium porcelain tile, a long-lasting and visually appealing option that resists water and chemical damage.

The pool interior was finished with Super Blue Diamond Brite, a material known for its strength, resilience, and attractive color. This finish creates a sparkling blue appearance that enhances the overall aesthetic while withstanding years of use. Diamond Brite is one of the most trusted finishes for commercial pools because it resists fading and staining, making it ideal for community environments where heavy use is expected.

Patio and Coping: Function Meets Design

The pool deck and surrounding area play a crucial role in the functionality and appeal of a Commercial Gunite Swimming Pool. For Sutton Landing, we installed a spacious patio using Nicolock concrete paving stones in a random pattern. The stones vary in size—16×24, 16×16, and 16×8 inches—creating a visually interesting and sophisticated look.

55+ community gunite swimming poolThe coping is a 24-inch commercial bullnose, specifically designed with safety in mind. The bullnose extends to the pool’s edge and slightly upward, reducing the risk of tripping and providing a smooth transition from patio to pool. Safety features like this are essential in communities with older residents.

Landscaping and Furnishings: Creating a Resort-Like Setting

The pool is not just a place to swim, it’s a centerpiece for relaxation and social gatherings. At Sutton Landing, the pool area is beautifully landscaped and thoughtfully furnished. The landscaping softens the hardscaping and adds a natural touch, while the furniture provides residents with numerous options for lounging, sunbathing, or socializing.</p></p>

Together, these elements create an inviting environment that feels more like a private resort than a typical community pool. This attention to detail enhances residents’ quality of life and increases the property’s overall value.

Why Choose a Commercial Gunite Swimming Pool?

When planning a pool for a community or commercial space, several options are available, including vinyl and fiberglass. However, gunite remains the gold standard for commercial applications. Here’s why:

1. Durability

Gunite pools are constructed with reinforced concrete, making them exceptionally strong and durable. Unlike other pool types, they can withstand heavy use and extreme weather conditions without compromising their structure.

2. Design Flexibility

One of the most significant advantages of a Commercial Gunite Swimming Pool is the freedom it offers in design. Shapes, sizes, depths, and features can all be customized to meet the needs of the community. For Sutton Landing, we created a pool that balances recreation with accessibility, a feature that wouldn’t be easily achieved with other pool types.

3. Low Maintenance

With finishes like Diamond Brite and porcelain tile, gunite pools require less maintenance over time. This is a key consideration for community pools that experience daily use and require regular maintenance to remain in top condition for residents.

4. Aesthetic Appeal

Gunite pools have a timeless elegance that elevates any property. They can be finished with a variety of materials, from plaster to aggregates, allowing for a polished and professional appearance.

Comprehensive Services Beyond New Installations

Building your dream pool is an exciting first step, but the journey doesn’t end once the construction is complete. A truly exceptional pool company provides support for the entire life of your pool. Think of it as a long-term partnership. From routine upkeep to future upgrades, having a dedicated team you can rely on ensures your investment remains a source of joy and relaxation for years to come. Ongoing Maintenance and Seasonal Care

A sparkling, healthy pool requires consistent care, and let’s be honest, not everyone has the time for it. Professional maintenance is the key to keeping your pool in pristine condition without sacrificing your weekends. This includes essential tasks like vacuuming, balancing chemicals, and inspecting pumps and filters to ensure everything is running efficiently. For Long Island homeowners, seasonal care is especially important. A proper pool opening in the spring sets you up for a great summer, while a thorough winterization protects your equipment from harsh weather, preventing costly damage. Regular upkeep not only keeps your pool looking beautiful but also extends the life of its components.

Repairs, Upgrades, and Modernization

Over time, even the best-built pools may need repairs or benefit from a few modern touches. Whether it’s fixing a small leak or replacing a worn-out pump, having a trusted professional to handle repairs is essential. Beyond fixes, you might decide to modernize your space. This could mean upgrading to energy-efficient equipment, installing automated cleaning systems, or adding beautiful LED lighting for evening swims. Aesthetic updates like new tile or a resurfaced interior can also completely transform the look of your pool. These modernization projects not only improve your enjoyment but can also add significant value to your home.

Permit Management and Project Guarantees

One of the most complex parts of any major home improvement project is navigating the paperwork. Building a pool requires specific permits and adherence to local Commack and New York State building codes. A reputable company will manage this entire process for you, from filing the initial applications to ensuring every phase of construction passes inspection. This saves you from headaches and potential legal issues down the road. Furthermore, always look for a company that stands behind its work with solid guarantees. This commitment to quality, like our expert masonry and construction work, gives you confidence that your investment is protected by skilled professionals dedicated to excellence.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the entire pool installation process typically take on Long Island? From the first design meeting to your first swim, the process is more involved than just the construction phase. We suggest starting the design and planning process in the fall or winter. This gives us plenty of time to finalize your vision, select materials, and secure the necessary town permits before the spring construction season even begins. The actual build can take several weeks, so starting early ensures your pool is ready to enjoy by the time warm weather arrives.

I’m trying to figure out my budget. What other costs should I plan for besides the pool itself? That’s a great question, and it’s smart to think about the complete picture. The pool is the main event, but your project will also include essential elements like safety fencing, which is required by most local codes. You’ll also want to budget for the surrounding patio, any landscaping to integrate the pool into your yard, and the necessary electrical work. We help you plan for the entire outdoor space so there are no financial surprises along the way.

You mention gunite, vinyl, and fiberglass pools. How do I choose the right one for my family? The best choice really depends on your top priorities. If you want complete design freedom for a unique shape, size, or built-in features like a spa, then a gunite pool is your best bet. If you’re looking for a fast installation and a smooth, low-maintenance surface, a fiberglass pool is an excellent option. For those focused on a lower initial investment, a vinyl liner pool offers a lot of flexibility and is a very popular choice.

Why is hiring a local Long Island builder so critical for a pool project? Building a pool on Long Island has its own set of rules and challenges. Each town, from Commack to the Hamptons, has different permit requirements and building codes. A local builder knows how to handle this process efficiently. They also have direct experience with our specific soil conditions and high water tables, allowing them to anticipate and solve potential problems before they cause delays or damage.

What kind of long-term maintenance costs should I expect with a new pool? Planning for lifetime ownership is key to enjoying your pool for years. Annual costs typically include chemicals, electricity for the pump and filter, and professional opening and closing services for the season. It’s also wise to plan for future upkeep. For example, a vinyl liner will likely need to be replaced every 7 to 10 years, while a gunite pool may need to be resurfaced after about a decade to keep it looking its best.

Key Takeaways

  • Select the right pool type for your home: Understand the core benefits of each option: gunite offers total design freedom, vinyl liner is a flexible and budget-friendly choice, and fiberglass provides the quickest installation with minimal long-term upkeep.
  • Prioritize local expertise for a smoother build: Hiring a contractor who understands Commack’s specific building codes, soil conditions, and permit rules is essential. Their local knowledge helps prevent costly delays and ensures your project is completed correctly.
  • Plan your budget for the complete vision: Remember that your total investment includes more than just the pool. Factor in costs for patios, fencing, landscaping, and future maintenance to create a cohesive outdoor space without financial surprises.
