Installation Process
In this basement we removed asbestos tiles that were glued down with liquid asphalt. The concrete floor was then grinded down to remove the tar and prepare the surface for the installation of the vapor barrier coating. Right after the first application of epoxy yellow vinyl, flakes were thrown widely in the wet epoxy and were left to stick and dry for the next 24 hours. The next step was to vacuum the loose vinyl flakes off the floor and lightly scrape the floor to flatten the surface. The final step was to apply a clear coat of the epoxy over the vinyl flakes. This gives the floor a smooth finish and covering the flakes prevents them from getting ripped off the floor. In this basement we did not apply any hardener coat over the epoxy because the floor is not used for vehicular traffic. In a garage floor or any vehicular trafficked area, a layer of urethane would need to be applied to harden the surface of the epoxy finish. This last process prolongs the wearing of the floor and also protects it from any UV light coming through the window and doors. The family in this East Islip home wanted a pool for entertaining that was built to last. Giuseppe Abbrancati, owner/designer of Smithtown-based Gappsi, Inc. suggested a gunite saltwater pool in a Sports Pool style design where both sides of the pool are shallow and the deep end is in the middle. “Gunite pools make a statement. They are a very customizable pool. That is why you see a sundeck, round steps, and LED lights inside the pool. You can shape the cement any way you want it and apply any finish. They are also highly durable,” says Abbrancati who has been building pools for the last thirty years. “The deepest part of this pool is six feet. It’s built like that so you can play volleyball in the pool and its fair ground,” he adds. Abbrancati designed a classic rectangular-shaped pool that is 16 by 32 foot in size and has that sleek modern look. “Everyone in the Hamptons has the gunite rectangular shape. It is the most elegant,” he says. The pool, he explains, is a cobalt blue diamond bright with quartz finish. Before the installation, the house – that is close to a hundred years old- had a simple concrete patio. in order to keep the character of the home, Abbrancati chose a brick looking veneer that would blend in with the existing bricks to make it look like the pool was always there. “I didn’t want the pool to look like it was an addition. I wanted it to look like it was built with the house 100 years ago,” he says. Travertine pavers were added throughout. Additional features of the property that Abbrancati built was a sunken down natural fire pit made from rocks and lava and an L-shaped bench for seating.
There are many manufactures of sealers, from solvents to acrylic urethane. Epoxies, acrylic, and urethane sealers come in water-based versions and solvent-based versions, including combinations of both. The biggest difference between the two is the VOC content. The sheen and life of the product determines how often it lasts before needing to be reapplied. Solvent-based acrylics tend yellow overtime and don’t allow the concrete breathe. Epoxies are the strongest sealers, but are best used for smoother surfaces and more for indoor or warehouse floor application. The best sealers for paving stones are water-based urethane. They are algae and mold inhibitors, allow superior joint stabilization, they are environmentally safe, its UV Protection will not harm vegetation, and it is VOC Compliant in all 50 States. Well-trained Gappsi personnel can apply paving stone sealer products achieving the best results.
