Creating a high-performance athletic surface requires far more than simply laying down tiles. It demands technical expertise, thoughtful design, durable materials, and precision installation. Gappsi recently completed a full Mateflex basketball court installation at Queens Community College in Queens, NY, transforming a severely deteriorated asphalt court into a modern, visually striking, and long-lasting sports facility built for competitive play and daily use.

This project represents the latest Mateflex sports game court installation completed by Gappsi in Queens, NY, and serves as a strong example of how professional resurfacing and modular tile systems can completely revitalize an aging outdoor court.

Assessing the Existing Asphalt Court

Before installation could begin, the existing asphalt basketball court had to be thoroughly evaluated. The surface was in very poor condition, with extensive cracking, uneven areas, and visible wear, rendering it unsafe and unsuitable for consistent athletic performance. Years of exposure to weather, heavy foot traffic, and a lack of proper maintenance had taken a toll on the court’s integrity.

Rather than removing the asphalt entirely, Gappsi implemented a cost-effective and structurally sound resurfacing solution. The entire court surface was resurfaced to create a stable foundation, and all cracks were carefully repaired to prevent future shifting or damage beneath the new court system. Proper surface preparation is a critical step in any Mateflex installation, ensuring longevity, safety, and optimal performance.

Installing Mateflex Top Court Tiles

Once the base surface was restored and leveled, Mateflex Top Court tiles were installed. Mateflex is known industry-wide for its premium modular sports flooring systems, engineered for durability, traction, shock absorption, and weather resistance. These tiles are ideal for outdoor basketball courts, especially in climates like New York, where freeze-thaw cycles and moisture can severely impact traditional surfaces.

For this project, Gappsi installed Mateflex tiles across the entire court, securing them with rust-free screws along the full perimeter. This installation method ensures maximum stability and prevents movement over time, even under heavy use. The use of rust-free hardware is especially important for outdoor installations, as it protects against corrosion and extends the lifespan of the court system.

Mateflex Basketball Court Installation at Queens Community CollegeCustom Color Design for Visual Impact and Function

Color selection plays both a functional and aesthetic role in sports game court design. At Queens Community College, Gappsi implemented a visually dynamic, professional color scheme using multiple Mateflex tile colors to clearly define play areas and enhance the court’s overall appearance.

  • Grass-green tiles were used around the perimeter of the court, creating a clean border that visually separates the playing surface from the surrounding areas.
  • Royal blue tiles were installed throughout the main basketball court, providing a bold and energetic look that enhances contrast and visibility.
  • Navy blue tiles were used specifically for the keys, clearly defining critical gameplay zones and adding depth to the design.

This thoughtful color layout not only elevates the court’s appearance but also improves player orientation and gameplay flow.

Precision Line Striping for Regulation Play

After tile installation, the court was professionally striped with crisp white lines. Proper line striping is essential for both recreational and competitive basketball, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with standard court dimensions.

The white striping contrasts sharply against the blue tile surface, making all boundaries, keys, and markings clearly visible during both daytime and evening play. Precision line work reflects the attention to detail that Gappsi brings to every sports game court installation.

Synthetic Turf Fringe Installation

To further enhance the court’s functionality and aesthetics, Gappsi installed a 12-inch synthetic turf fringe around the entire perimeter of the basketball court. This turf border serves several important purposes:

  • It provides a clean, finished transition between the court and surrounding surfaces.
  • It improves drainage and reduces the tracking of dirt and debris onto the playing surface.
  • It adds a professional, stadium-style look to the court area.

The combination of modular tiles and synthetic turf creates a cohesive, polished environment that feels both modern and inviting.

Premier Douglas Fixed Basketball Hoops

No basketball court is complete without high-quality equipment. For this installation, Gappsi installed Premier Douglas fixed basketball hoops, known for their durability, strength, and professional-grade construction. These hoops were painted black, adding a sleek, modern finish that complements the court’s bold color scheme.

Fixed basketball hoops are ideal for institutional settings such as colleges, as they offer long-term reliability, consistent performance, and minimal maintenance requirements.

Built for Durability and Long-Term Use

Every aspect of this Mateflex court installation was designed with longevity in mind. From resurfacing the asphalt base and repairing cracks to securing the tiles with rust-free screws and installing durable hoops, this court is built to withstand years of heavy use.

Mateflex tiles are engineered to resist UV damage, moisture penetration, and temperature fluctuations, making them an excellent choice for outdoor courts in New York. Their modular design also allows for easy repairs or replacements in the future without disrupting the entire surface.

A Modern Upgrade for Queens Community College

This completed basketball court provides Queens Community College with a safe, attractive, and high-performance athletic space for students, staff, and community use. What was once a worn-down asphalt court is now a state-of-the-art facility that supports recreation, competition, and campus pride.

The latest Mateflex tile sports court installation completed by Gappsi in Queens, NY, showcases the company’s expertise in sports surface design, preparation, and installation. From initial assessment to final striping, every phase was executed with precision and professionalism.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through the entire project from the design to the materials used.  We will also highlight why Mateflex basketball courts are such a popular choice for homeowners looking to elevate their outdoor living experience.

Planning Your Dream Backyard in Southampton

Creating your dream backyard is one of the most exciting home improvement projects you can take on. It’s about more than just adding a feature; it’s about designing a lifestyle. For homeowners in Southampton, a backyard oasis can mean a private retreat for quiet afternoons, a lively hub for family gatherings, or the perfect spot for summer entertaining. The centerpiece of this vision is often a beautiful inground pool, but the planning process involves much more. From selecting the right pool type to budgeting for landscaping and long-term maintenance, every detail matters. Thinking through these elements ahead of time ensures your final space is not only stunning but also functional and sustainable for years of enjoyment.

Choosing the Right Inground Pool for Your Home

The first major decision in your backyard transformation is choosing the type of inground pool. This choice affects everything from your initial budget and construction timeline to the look of your finished space and how much time you’ll spend on upkeep. The three main options are vinyl liner, fiberglass, and gunite, each with its own set of benefits. Your property’s specific conditions, your design preferences, and your budget will all play a role in determining the best fit. At Gappsi, we help homeowners find the perfect swimming pool by walking them through the pros and cons of each material, ensuring the foundation of their backyard oasis is exactly what they envisioned.

Vinyl Liner Pools

Vinyl liner pools are a popular and versatile option for many homeowners. They are constructed with a custom-fitted sheet of vinyl placed over a steel or polymer frame. One of the biggest draws of a vinyl liner pool is the initial cost, which is often lower than fiberglass or gunite. The liner itself is smooth to the touch and non-porous, which helps inhibit algae growth and simplifies cleaning. While the liner will need to be replaced every 8 to 12 years, modern vinyls are incredibly durable and come in a huge variety of colors and patterns, giving you plenty of design flexibility without a massive upfront investment.

Fiberglass Pools

If low maintenance and durability are at the top of your list, a fiberglass pool is an excellent choice. These pools are pre-molded in a factory and delivered to your home in one piece, which can significantly shorten the installation time. The surface of a fiberglass pool is smooth and non-porous, making it resistant to algae and gentle on your skin. This also means you’ll likely spend less time and money on chemicals over the life of the pool. While the initial cost can be higher than vinyl, many homeowners find the long-term savings and ease of care to be a worthwhile trade-off for their busy lifestyles.

Gunite Pools

For those who want complete creative control, gunite pools offer limitless design possibilities. Gunite is a mixture of cement, sand, and water that is sprayed onto a rebar framework, allowing you to create a pool in any shape or size you can imagine. This makes it the perfect choice for unique backyard layouts or for adding custom features like built-in benches, tanning ledges, and intricate water features. While gunite pools typically have the highest initial cost and require more intensive maintenance, their durability and design flexibility are unmatched, allowing you to build a truly one-of-a-kind backyard masterpiece.

Understanding the Cost of an Inground Pool Installation

When budgeting for a new pool, it’s important to look beyond the price of the pool itself. The total cost includes the installation, but also a range of other essential and optional expenses that bring your vision to life. These can include everything from the surrounding patio and landscaping to safety fencing and lighting. Understanding these additional costs upfront helps you create a realistic budget and avoid surprises down the road. A comprehensive plan accounts for not just the construction but also the finishing touches that make your pool area a complete and cohesive outdoor living space. This foresight ensures you can build the backyard you want without compromising on quality or safety.

Average Installation Costs

The initial installation cost of an inground pool varies widely based on the material you choose. Each type has a different price point for the basic package, which typically includes the pool shell, pump, and filter system. These figures provide a solid starting point for your budget, but remember that factors like site accessibility, soil conditions, and local permit fees can also influence the final price. It’s always best to get a detailed quote that breaks down all the included elements so you know exactly what you’re paying for before construction begins.

Vinyl, Fiberglass, and Gunite Price Ranges

Generally, you can expect vinyl liner pools to have the lowest upfront installation cost, often ranging from $50,000 to $80,000. Fiberglass pools fall in the middle, with average installation costs between $65,000 and $100,000, reflecting their factory-built quality and quicker installation time. Gunite pools sit at the higher end of the spectrum, typically starting at $75,000 and going well over $150,000, depending on the complexity of the custom design. These ranges are estimates, but they give you a clear idea of how your choice of material will impact your initial investment.

Additional Installation Expenses to Consider

Beyond the pool itself, several other components are necessary to complete your project. These additional expenses are what transform a simple swimming pool into a fully functional and beautiful backyard retreat. From the hardscaping that defines the space to the safety features required by law, each element plays a critical role. Planning for these items from the start ensures a seamless installation process and a finished product that is both safe and stunning. Thinking about these details early on allows you to integrate them perfectly into your overall design.

Pool Decking and Landscaping

The area around your pool is just as important as the pool itself. Pool decking, or the patio area, provides space for lounging and entertaining. Upgraded materials like natural stone or elegant porcelain pavers can add between $10,000 and $25,000 to your budget. Thoughtful landscaping softens the hardscape and integrates the pool into your yard. Gappsi’s expert masonry and landscape design teams can help you create a cohesive look that complements both your home and your new pool.

Fencing and Safety Features

Safety is a top priority for any pool owner. Most municipalities, including those in Long Island, require a fence of a certain height to enclose the pool area to prevent accidents. The cost for fencing can range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the material and length you need. Gappsi offers a variety of fencing options, from classic aluminum to modern composite, to meet safety codes while enhancing your backyard’s aesthetic. This is a non-negotiable part of your budget that ensures peace of mind.

Heating Systems and Automatic Covers

To extend your swimming season into the cooler months, a heating system is a great investment, typically costing between $4,000 and $8,000. An automatic pool cover, which can run from $3,000 to $7,000, offers multiple benefits. It not only improves safety by covering the water’s surface but also helps retain heat, reduces water evaporation, and keeps debris out of the pool. Together, these features add convenience and allow you to get more use out of your pool throughout the year.

Lighting, Water Features, and Automation

Modern features can truly personalize your pool experience. LED lighting creates ambiance for evening swims, while water features like waterfalls or deck jets add sound and visual appeal. Pool automation systems allow you to control everything from the pump and heater to the lights and water features right from your smartphone. These enhancements add another layer of luxury and convenience, turning your pool into a high-tech oasis that is easy to manage and a joy to use day or night.

Long-Term Ownership and Maintenance Costs

Your financial planning shouldn’t stop once the pool is built. Owning a pool comes with ongoing maintenance costs that are important to factor into your annual household budget. These expenses include everything from chemicals and electricity to occasional repairs and eventual equipment replacement. Being aware of these long-term costs from the beginning ensures that you can comfortably afford to keep your pool in pristine condition, protecting your investment and guaranteeing it remains a source of enjoyment for your family for many years.

Annual Upkeep for Chemicals and Electricity

Every year, you’ll need to budget for the essentials that keep your pool clean and running. Water chemicals, including chlorine, pH balancers, and algaecide, can cost between $500 and $1,000 annually. The electricity needed to run the pump and filter is another significant expense, typically ranging from $500 to $2,500 per year, depending on the size of your pool and how often you run the equipment. These predictable costs are a fundamental part of pool ownership.

Future Replacement Costs

Over time, certain parts of your pool will need to be replaced. If you choose a vinyl liner pool, for example, you should plan on replacing the liner every 8 to 12 years, which can cost between $5,000 and $7,000. Other equipment, like the pump or heater, will also eventually wear out. Setting aside a small amount each year for these future expenses is a smart way to prepare, so you’re not caught off guard when a major replacement is needed.

Key Considerations Before You Commit

Installing a pool is a major commitment of both time and money, so it’s wise to think through a few key questions before breaking ground. Beyond the excitement of design and construction, practical considerations about your long-term plans and finances will help you make a decision you’ll be happy with for years to come. Taking a moment to reflect on how a pool fits into your lifestyle and your home’s future value is a crucial step. This ensures that your investment aligns with your personal and financial goals, making the entire process smoother and more rewarding.

Financial Planning for Your Pool

Before moving forward, take a hard look at your finances. A pool is a significant investment, and it’s important to ensure it fits comfortably within your budget, including the ongoing maintenance costs. Also, consider how long you plan to stay in your home. While a pool adds value, it can take five to ten years to see a substantial return on your investment. If you see yourself moving in the near future, you may not recoup the full cost, so it’s important to weigh the immediate lifestyle benefits against the long-term financial picture.

Thinking About Long-Term Use and Home Value

Think about how your family will use the pool now and in the future. Will it be a hub for kids and their friends, a quiet spot for relaxation, or a centerpiece for entertaining? Your intended use can influence design choices. A pool can certainly increase your property’s appeal and resale value, especially in a desirable area like Southampton. However, its primary value should be the enjoyment it brings to you and your family. A well-designed and properly maintained pool is an asset that enhances both your lifestyle and your home.

Beyond the Pool: Creating a Complete Outdoor Oasis

A swimming pool is often the star of the show, but the supporting elements are what create a truly complete outdoor oasis. Think about how you want to use the entire space. Do you envision a cozy fire pit for cool evenings, an outdoor kitchen for alfresco dining, or a comfortable lounge area under a pergola? Integrating these features creates different “zones” for various activities, making your backyard more versatile and inviting. Gappsi specializes in designing and building comprehensive outdoor living environments, ensuring every element, from the pavilions to the patios, works together in harmony.

Adding a Custom Sports Court

To make your backyard the ultimate destination for fun and activity, consider adding a custom sports court. A basketball court, pickleball court, or multi-game surface can provide endless entertainment for all ages and perfectly complements a pool area. As we did for a recent project in Southampton, we can design a court that fits your specific space and aesthetic preferences. Using high-quality materials like Mateflex tiles, we can build a durable, safe, and attractive court that turns your backyard into a private resort. Check out our synthetic turf and game courts to see how you can add another layer of recreation to your outdoor oasis.

custom-basketball-court-installation-in-southampton-ny-4A Custom-Designed Court for the Homeowner’s Needs

Not every property has the same space available for a full-sized basketball court, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the game. For this Southampton project, we designed a custom-sized court to maximize the area while still keeping the game authentic and fun.

The court includes a 3-point line, although it was slightly scaled down to fit the available space. This gives the homeowners and their guests the whole basketball experience.  Shooting, dribbling, and gameplay while making the most of the property layout.

The Mateflex Tile System

The foundation of this project lies in the Mateflex tile system, one of the most trusted names in sports flooring. For this installation, we first prepared an asphalt base, ensuring a smooth and solid surface for durability. Then, we installed Mateflex TopCourt tiles, designed explicitly for outdoor basketball courts.

What makes Mateflex tiles so special?

  • Shock Absorption & Comfort – They reduce stress on joints, making the game more enjoyable and safer.
  • All-Weather Durability – The tiles are resistant to weather extremes, from summer heat to winter frost, ensuring longevity.
  • Low Maintenance – They are easy to clean, resistant to fading, and require little upkeep compared to traditional surfaces.
  • Performance Quality – With excellent ball response and traction, they mimic the feel of a professional basketball surface.

custom-basketball-court-installation-in-southampton-ny-3For this Southampton project, the homeowners chose a vibrant color scheme that brought the court to life:

  • Red tiles for the border.
  • Navy blue tiles for the inlay.
  • Royal blue tiles for the keys.

The contrast of bold blues against the striking red border created a modern, eye-catching design. To finish it off, we carefully added white striping to outline the court lines, ensuring both style and function.

The Dominator 72-Inch Adjustable Basketball Hoop

A court is only as good as the hoop that goes with it. For this installation, we installed a Dominator 72-inch basketball hoop, one of the top choices for residential courts.

What sets this hoop apart is its adjustability. Players of all ages and skill levels can enjoy the court by lowering or raising the hoop to the desired height. Whether kids are practicing layups or adults are playing a competitive game, the Dominator hoop is built for performance and durability. Made with heavy-duty materials, it can withstand the demands of daily use while maintaining its sleek, professional look.

Custom basketball court with Dominator basketball hoopSports Game Court Netting and Court Surroundings

One of the challenges of building a backyard court is keeping the ball contained. To solve this, we surrounded the Southampton court with out-of-bounds netting on three sides. This netting ensures that basketballs stay within the play area, reducing the chance of lost balls and protecting the surrounding property.

In addition to functionality, aesthetics were also a priority for this project. We built a Cumaru wood wall on one side of the court. While the netting provides containment, the Cumaru wall offers a warm, natural design element that complements the outdoor setting. Cumaru wood, known for its durability and rich color, serves as both a functional barrier and a beautiful architectural feature.

Synthetic Fringe for a Finished Look

Attention to detail is what truly elevates a project. To complete the basketball court design, we added a 1-foot-wide synthetic turf fringe around the entire perimeter. This not only frames the court beautifully but also provides a clean, polished transition from the playing surface to the surrounding landscape. The turf creates a softer edge, reducing dirt and debris from tracking onto the court, while enhancing the overall visual appeal.

This Southampton project is a perfect example of why Mateflex courts are a growing trend among homeowners. Here are some of the top benefits:

  1. Customization – Whether you have a large property or a smaller backyard, Mateflex courts can be designed to fit your space.
  2. Durability – Built to withstand heavy use and harsh weather, these courts are long-lasting investments.
  3. Safety & Comfort – With shock-absorbing properties, they help protect players’ joints and minimize injury risk.
  4. Aesthetic Appeal – With endless color combinations and design possibilities, you can create a court that’s as stylish as it is functional.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I decide between a pool and a sports court if I only have room for one? This really comes down to your family’s lifestyle. Think about how you want to spend your time outdoors. A pool is fantastic for relaxing, cooling off on hot days, and low-impact exercise. A sports court, on the other hand, is all about active play and friendly competition. Consider who will use the space most and what activity will bring your family the most joy on a regular basis.

What is the most overlooked cost when installing an inground pool? Many people budget for the pool and the patio right around it, but they often underestimate the cost of landscaping and site work. Creating a cohesive look involves more than just the pool itself; it includes grading the surrounding yard for proper drainage, adding plants and trees for privacy and beauty, and installing lighting. These finishing touches are what truly create an oasis, so it’s wise to include them in your initial budget.

The basketball court in the article was custom-sized. How small can a court be and still be fun to play on? You don’t need a regulation-sized court to have a great time. A well-designed half-court or even just a dedicated shooting area with a 3-point line can provide hours of fun and practice. The key is smart design that makes the most of your available yard. We can scale a court to fit your specific dimensions while ensuring it remains a functional and enjoyable space for play.

In simple terms, what’s the real difference in upkeep for the three pool types? Think of it this way: fiberglass pools are the lowest maintenance, as their smooth, non-porous surface resists algae and requires fewer chemicals. Vinyl liner pools are also relatively easy to care for day-to-day, but you will need to plan for replacing the liner every 8 to 12 years. Gunite pools demand the most attention, as their porous surface requires more brushing, more chemicals to stay balanced, and may eventually need to be resurfaced.

Can you handle my entire backyard project, or do I need to hire separate contractors for the pool, patio, and landscaping? We can absolutely manage the entire project from start to finish. Our specialty is creating complete, cohesive outdoor living spaces. This means our team handles everything from the initial design and permits to the pool installation, masonry, court construction, and final landscaping. Having one team oversee the whole process ensures every element works together beautifully and saves you the headache of coordinating multiple contractors.

Key Takeaways

  • Budget for the entire project, not just the pool: A realistic financial plan for an inground pool includes the initial installation plus essential extras like decking, safety fencing, and landscaping, along with long-term costs for maintenance and utilities.
  • Choose a pool material that fits your lifestyle: Each pool type (vinyl, fiberglass, or gunite) comes with different costs, maintenance requirements, and design possibilities, so it’s important to select the one that aligns with your budget and aesthetic goals.
  • Create a complete oasis with complementary features: A pool is a fantastic centerpiece, but integrating other elements like a custom sports court, a pavilion, or an outdoor kitchen is what creates a truly functional and enjoyable outdoor living space.

A Multi-Sport Pickleball Court is becoming increasingly popular for homeowners who want to bring recreation, fitness, and family fun right into their backyards. One of the most versatile and attractive options available today is the Mateflex multi-sport game court system. Recently, Gappsi completed the installation of a stunning multi-sport pickleball court in Brookville, NY, showcasing the perfect balance of functionality, design, and durability.

This project highlights how a well-designed multi-sport game court can transform any outdoor space into a recreational hub suitable for all ages. From the carefully chosen colors to the premium materials and professional features, this court is an excellent example of how Gappsi continues to raise the standard for sports game court installations across Long Island.

A Sports Game Court That Blends Functionality with Style

One of the most eye-catching features of this Brookville installation is the color combination of the Mateflex tiles. For the outer perimeter, Gappsi used navy blue Mateflex tiles, creating a bold frame that adds depth and definition to the court. For the inlay, where the pickleball play happens, a brick red tile was chosen. This contrast not only enhances the visual appeal but also helps to differentiate the playing zones clearly, ensuring that each sport can be enjoyed without confusion.

The court is neatly striped with precision-applied white lines to support multiple sports. The layout includes:

  • Shuffleboard markings,
  • Basketball keys and three-point lines,
  • Pickleball striping for singles and doubles play.

These markings enable homeowners and their guests to seamlessly transition between games without the need for additional equipment or separate courts.

What makes this Brookville project so special is its adaptability. Rather than limiting the space to just one sport, Gappsi equipped the court with multi-use features, making it suitable for a variety of sports, including basketball, pickleball, badminton, volleyball, and even shuffleboard.

Dominator Basketball Hoops

The court includes Dominator basketball hoops, which are considered some of the best in the industry. These adjustable regulation hoops allow players of all ages to enjoy the game. Whether it’s a competitive full-court match or just a casual game of HORSE with the kids, the hoops provide professional-level performance.

Multi-Sport Netting System

The installation also features adjustable multisport netting. This versatile system allows homeowners to switch between pickleball, badminton, and volleyball with ease. The net can be raised or lowered depending on the sport, ensuring proper playability for each game.

To keep gameplay safe and enjoyable, Gappsi installed bounce netting around the entire court. This netting stands at 12 feet high, supported by sturdy 3-inch posts, ensuring that balls remain within the court and do not disrupt the surrounding property. The netting helps reduce interruptions, keeps the area organized, and makes gameplay smoother for everyone involved.

Professional Lighting: Play Any Time of Day

A significant benefit of this installation is the ability to play even after the sun sets. Gappsi added a Dominator lighting system with a pole supporting triple lights. These lights are designed to evenly illuminate the court without creating harsh glare, allowing games to continue well into the evening. With this setup, the court truly becomes a 24/7 recreational space for the homeowners and their guests.

Why Mateflex Tiles? The Benefits of Modular Sports Flooring

The decision to use Mateflex tiles is what makes this court both visually stunning and highly functional. Mateflex has long been a leader in modular sports flooring, and its products offer many advantages:

  • Durability: The tiles are designed to withstand all weather conditions, from hot summers to snowy winters.
  • Traction & Safety: The textured surface provides excellent grip, reducing the risk of slips and falls.

  • Customizable Designs: Homeowners can select from a wide range of colors to create unique layouts that reflect their style.

By using these tiles, Gappsi ensured that this Brookville multi-sport game court would not only look fantastic but also stand the test of time.

Transforming Unused Space into a Backyard Paradise: Bocce Ball and Shuffleboard Court Installation in Melville, NY

Transforming an unused space into a backyard paradise for a Bocce Ball and Shuffleboard Court.  At Gappsi, we take pride in transforming underutilized and challenging spaces into functional, beautiful outdoor retreats. Our most recent project in Melville, NY, is a prime example of how innovative design and expert craftsmanship can transform even the most challenging terrain into a recreational haven. In this case, we transformed a sloped, unused portion of a backyard into a state-of-the-art sports game court area, featuring a custom bocce ball court and a premium shuffleboard court.

The Vision: Making Use of Challenging Terrain

The homeowners had a large section of their backyard that was significantly sloped and essentially unused. Rather than letting the space go to waste, they approached us with the idea of turning it into a multi-use recreational area. Our team took on the challenge.  We set out to design and construct a bocce ball and shuffleboard court that would not only look great but also stand the test of time.

Site Preparation and Leveling for Bocce Ball and Shuffleboard Court1-bocce-court-and-shuffle-sport-game-courts-melville-ny

One of the first and most crucial steps in this project involved leveling the sloped terrain. Before any courts could be installed, we had to create a flat, stable foundation that would support the structure and ensure longevity and usability. To accomplish this, we built a strong retaining wall using railroad tiles. These heavy-duty, aesthetically pleasing wooden ties helped reinforce the outer perimeter while also supporting the newly leveled land within.

The retaining wall played a dual role: it created a boundary for the courts. It provided the necessary structural integrity to the area, making it safe and durable for years to come.

Bocce Ball Court Construction: Precision and Style

The bocce ball court is a masterpiece of both form and function. We constructed it using synthetic walls, which offer several advantages over traditional wooden or metallic materials. One significant benefit is that there are no exposed screws, resulting in a sleek, seamless appearance for the court. More importantly, the materials used are designed to be highly durable, ensuring that the court will not wear out over time or fade in color due to sun exposure or weather.

Polymeric Sand Installation

The playing surface is made from a high-quality synthetic turf imported directly from Italy. We chose this specific turf not only for its durability and realistic feel but also because it is explicitly designed for bocce play. The turf is topped with a green infill, and we added clean white striping to define the court lines, enhancing both playability and visual appeal.

Shuffleboard Court Construction: Eco-Friendly and Elegant

Adjacent to the bocce court is a professionally installed shuffleboard court, providing another recreational option for homeowners and their guests. Unlike the bocce court, which uses a synthetic turf surface, the shuffleboard court is built on a recycled concrete base. This eco-friendly choice reflects our commitment to sustainable construction practices whenever possible.

Bocce ball sports game courtTo provide a professional-grade playing experience, we installed Mateflex tiles over the concrete base. These interlocking modular tiles are known for their resilience, low maintenance, and ability to provide consistent ball glide and bounce. Their modular nature also makes them easier to maintain or replace over time, without the need to overhaul the entire surface.

Surrounding the shuffleboard court is a border of lush synthetic turf, also imported from Italy. This turf features a 1¼-inch pile height, giving it a luxurious, natural look and feel. Not only does it add a visual buffer around the court, but it also enhances safety and comfort for players and spectators alike.

Materials That Make a Difference

Every material used in this project was carefully selected to ensure the courts remain functional, attractive, and low-maintenance over time. Here’s a closer look at the premium materials and their benefits:

  • Synthetic Walls for Bocce Ball Court: These offer durability without deterioration. Since there are no exposed fasteners, the court maintains a clean, polished appearance.
  • Italian Imported Turf for Bocce Court: Specifically designed for bocce, this turf provides excellent ball rolland weather resistance, maintaining its color and texture for years.
  • Green Infill and White Striping: Enhances playability while giving the court a professional appearance.
  • Recycled Concrete Base for Shuffleboard Court: An environmentally conscious choice that also provides a solid and level foundation.
  • Mateflex Tiles: Engineered for sports use, these tiles offer excellent performance with minimal upkeep.
  • 1¼-Inch Italian Synthetic Turf Surround: Combines beauty and function, creating a soft, realistic look that complements the courts and provides comfort underfoot.

In today’s competitive residential market, standout amenities like a Mateflex Shuffleboard & Bocce Court can make all the difference. Outdoor courts for games like bocce ball and shuffleboard offer active recreation and community space, boosting a development’s appeal. For example, a recent East Meadow, NY project by Gappsi features a 12×60′ bocce court with synthetic turf and walls alongside two shuffleboard courts surfaced with dark-green and dark-blue Mateflex tiles. These multi-sport game courts deliver eye-catching aesthetics, year-round playability, and social benefits that resonate with renters and buyers alike.

Recreation and Community-Building

multi-sport-game-courtA dedicated bocce court invites friendly competition and casual socializing in one package. Both bocce and shuffleboard are low-impact games enjoyed by all ages: residents can relax, exercise, and mingle around the courts. Research confirms that such active spaces become community hubs – “shuffleboard courts are a popular gathering spot” that allow players to socialize. Bocce ball “promotes friendly competition and encourages group interaction”. In short, these amenities help build camaraderie. Modern amenity experts note that well-designed outdoor features “act as social hubs, promoting community interaction and cohesion”. By incorporating a multi-sport game court, developers give residents a place to meet and connect at home.

Aesthetic Appeal and Custom Design

Beyond function, multi-sport game courts enhance the look of a community. The vibrant green-and-blue Mateflex shuffleboard surface (with crisp white lines) brings visual interest to the landscape, complementing nearby picnic or pool areas. Synthetic turf bocce courts can also be customized in shades of green or tan to match the setting. These clean, uniform surfaces look well-manicured without constant upkeep. Design flexibility is a selling point: the interlocking sport tiles come in a palette of colors and allow painting of game markings so that each court can fit the development’s style. Property managers and turf suppliers emphasize these surfaces’ “aesthetically pleasing” appearance. A fresh, resort-like sports area signals quality and attention to detail, making a development more memorable to prospects.

  • Waterless, painless upkeep. Unlike natural grass, synthetic bocce turf never needs watering, mowing, or fertilizing. There’s no sand or clay to rake after play. One installer notes that artificial bocce turf “requires less maintenance than grass, as it doesn’t need to be watered or fertilized”. The result is significant savings in labor and irrigation costs over time.
  • All-weather performance. These surfaces drain quickly and resist weather delays. Modern turf courts use advanced infill and drainage layers so rain or snow won’t leave puddles. For example, synthetic bocce courts have built-in drainage that “ensures the effects of weather on your court are minimized,” meaning games resume soon after storms. Likewise, Mateflex polypropylene tiles are UV- and weather-stable, so they withstand sun, rain, and freezes without cracking or fading.
  • Exceptional longevity. High-grade materials mean these courts “never wear down.” As one turf supplier puts it, artificial grass is “inherently hardy” — you can install a court once and enjoy it for years. The infill and fibers stay uniform even under heavy use, guaranteeing consistent ball roll over time. Similarly, Mateflex-style interlocking tiles expand and contract with temperature, which prevents cracks. A sports flooring expert notes that tile courts offer “a long life with minimal maintenance,” using a flex-joint design that adapts to ground shifts.
  • Safe, consistent play. Both synthetic turf and game tiles provide a stable, level surface. There are no dips or bare spots like on grass, so playing is safer and smoother. Manufacturers highlight that tile floors are cushioned and slip-resistant. These resilient materials absorb shock (for example, Mateflex’s flex-joint gives a little underfoot) while remaining firm for rolling balls, delivering a comfortable yet authentic playing experience.

Why Multi-Sport Game Courts

In short, multi-sport game court materials are engineered for minimal upkeep and maximum lifespan. The synthetic bocce turf and Mateflex tiles won’t require repaving or re-seeding like traditional surfaces. This low maintenance burden is a significant plus for developers, who can avoid recurring repair costs and keep residents happy with trouble-free amenities.

Boosting Appeal, Retention, and Value

Integrating a multi-sport game court like Mateflex shuffleboard & bocce court makes a property more attractive to renters and buyers. Industry research shows outdoor amenities “significantly impact your property’s ability to attract new tenants, retain existing ones, and even increase [its] value”. In other words, offering unique recreation spaces pays dividends. When potential residents shop for homes, vibrant on-site features like bocce and shuffleboard courts catch their eye and set a community apart in a crowded market.

Top 3 Advantages

  • Competitive edge. In an “amenities race” to meet tenant expectations, properties with fun and social features gain an advantage. Prospects touring a complex with an inviting shuffleboard court or bocce lawn will view it as having added lifestyle value. Outdoor game areas also advertise themselves – neighbors and visitors notice them, sparking interest. As one management blog notes, having appealing outdoor extras helps a property “stand out in an increasingly competitive market”.
  • Higher occupancy and rents. Multifamily studies confirm that more amenities translate into stronger financial performance. For example, Newmark research found that well-amenitized projects command noticeably higher rents and lease up faster than comparable projects with fewer perks. In practice, a community sporting a distinctive game court can justify a rent premium or fill vacancies more quickly, because it meets modern lifestyle demands.
  • Resident satisfaction and renewal. Current tenants benefit directly, too. Having on-site recreation encourages residents to stay longer. Amenities that foster social bonds build community loyalty. Tenants who feel at home—meeting friends at the bocce court or joining shuffleboard tournaments—are less likely to move away. This can improve renewal rates and reduce turnover costs. One property manager notes that rentals with desirable amenities are “hard to turn down. ” Existing residents often renew simply because of the lifestyle extras they enjoy.

multi-sport-game-court---mateflex-shuffleboard--bocce-court-east-meadow-ny3In sum, a multi-sport game court is more than just a play area – it invests in marketability and resident well-being. For developers aiming to differentiate their projects, such courts signal a forward-thinking design that meets current buyer and renter expectations. The result is a happier resident community and a stronger brand, ultimately leading to higher occupancy, better rates, and long-term property value.

Mateflex Shuffleboard & Bocce Court in East Meadow, NY

Adding a synthetic bocce court and adjacent shuffleboard courts is a cost-effective way to elevate a residential complex. These amenities deliver recreation, social interaction, and visual appeal year after year, with virtually no degradation. Durable synthetic turf and tile systems ensure the courts stay fresh-looking and safe for use in any season. And because they tap into rising tenant preferences, especially among active and multi-generational households, they help projects stand out. By embracing multi-sport game courts, developers give their residents novel lifestyle perks while securing a competitive edge in the marketplace.
