Look at this old Tennis court conversion with Mateflex sports tiles.  It takes on a modern sports surface and transforms it in East Meadow, NY.  In today’s ever-evolving world of recreational spaces, the demand for versatile, low-maintenance, and professional-looking sports surfaces is on the rise. Whether for residential enjoyment or community enhancement, an upgraded sports game court can dramatically boost the aesthetic, usability, and value of a property. One excellent example of this transformation is the latest project completed by Gappsi in East Meadow, NY.  The conversion of an old asphalt tennis court to a Mateflex Sports Tiles installation.

The Starting Point: An Aging Asphalt Tennis Court Conversion

This project began with a classic tennis court that had seen better days. The surface, originally asphalt, had developed numerous cracks.  Also, it had uneven patches and faded coloring due to years of exposure to weather and use. While the structure was still fundamentally sound, the playing surface required serious attention.  To return it to a playable and visually appealing condition.

Gappsi’s team began by preparing the court’s foundation. Every crack and patch was meticulously repaired, and the entire court was resurfaced. This process was vital in ensuring the Mateflex tiles would have a smooth and even base to sit on, which is crucial for both performance and longevity.

Once the asphalt surface was repaired correctly and leveled, it was time to install the Mateflex tiles. Mateflex is a top-tier modular sports flooring system.  It is renowned for its exceptional durability, superior shock absorption, and exceptional performance. These tiles are often the go-to choice for both indoor and outdoor courts.  They provide a professional-grade surface that’s easier on athletes’ joints while also being resistant to weathering.

Each Mateflex tile is one square foot in size and cleverly divided into 16 smaller sub-tiles, each connected by expansion joints. This unique design allows the surface to flex slightly with temperature changes and pressure without cracking or buckling. This feature extends the life of the court and enhances the player experience by offering a cushioned yet firm surface to move on

Design and Color Scheme for the Tennis Court Conversion

The aesthetic transformation of the court is striking. The outer perimeter of the court was outfitted in green tiles, giving the court a lush, natural border.  The central inlay, the primary tennis playing surface, was done in a bold blue. This high-contrast color combination is not only visually pleasing but also improves visibility for players and spectators.

The court was then professionally striped with regulation white lines for tennis, and yellow lines for two pickleball sports game courts—one on each side of the tennis net. The dual functionality of this court design is one of the standout features of the tennis court conversion. Pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S. Integrating its play area into the tennis court adds tremendous value.

One of the most innovative features of this upgraded court is its multi-sport functionality. While the primary use remains tennis, the yellow-striped pickleball courts offer additional usability. Each pickleball court sits on either side of the tennis net, and players can use removable pickleball nets that can be easily installed and taken down when switching between games.

This versatile setup enables homeowners or facility managers to cater to various types of players and age groups, eliminating the need for separate courts. Whether it’s a competitive tennis match or a fun, social game of pickleball, this court is designed to handle it all.

Clean Edges and Finishing Touches

To complete the transformation, Gappsi added a one-foot-wide strip of synthetic turf around the entire perimeter of the court. This wasn’t just a decorative touch; it served a practical purpose. The old perimeter fencing of the court was no longer perfectly aligned, and the turf created a clean visual break between the new playing surface and the aging fence. It softened the overall appearance and made the installation look polished and intentional.

This thoughtful detail elevates the court from a simple resurfacing project to a professional-grade sports facility. The synthetic turf perimeter creates a seamless visual transition, making the court feel enclosed and unified.

Precision Installation for the Tennis Court Conversion

Installing Mateflex tiles isn’t just a matter of snapping them together. After laying out and aligning the tiles, the Gappsi team stretched the entire court and secured it with stainless steel screws. This not only ensures that the tiles stay perfectly in place during heavy use but also allows for minimal movement with changing weather conditions. Stainless steel screws were explicitly chosen for their durability and resistance to rust, especially in outdoor conditions.

The installation reflects Gappsi’s meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship. Every element from surface preparation and color selection to line striping and fastening was handled with precision.

Why Choose a Mateflex Sports Tile Conversion?

Converting old asphalt or concrete sports game courts into modern surfaces using Mateflex tiles is one of the most cost-effective and efficient ways to rejuvenate recreational areas. Unlike complete tear-downs, a Mateflex installation utilizes the existing structure, thereby reducing labor costs and minimizing environmental waste. In just a short time, an outdated and cracked court can be turned into a vibrant, multi-functional sports zone.

Mateflex tiles also offer year-round playability and easy maintenance. Their open-grid design helps with drainage and prevents water buildup, allowing players to return to the court shortly after a rain. The tiles are also UV-stable, meaning they won’t fade over time, keeping the court looking great for years to come.

When building a pickleball sports game court with out of bounce netting system, selecting the right surface material is essential for playing at the highest level. The surface affects the court’s playability, safety, and maintenance.

Surface Material and Construction

The choice of surface material greatly affects the court’s playability and maintenance. Asphalt and concrete are the most common materials used for pickleball courts, each with advantages and disadvantages. Asphalt is more affordable and offers a softer surface, while concrete provides a more durable and low-maintenance option. Regardless of the material chosen, it’s essential to ensure a smooth finish to prevent injuries and enhance the playing experience.

Asphalt is a popular choice for pickleball courts due to its durability and cost-effectiveness. It provides a hard, smooth surface that is ideal for fast-paced games.

Asphalt courts can withstand heavy use and weather conditions, making them a long-lasting option.

pickleball-sports-game-courts-with-out-of-bounce-netting-system-queens-n.yAsphalt Pickleball Sports Game Court Pros:

  • Durability: Asphalt is highly durable and can last many years with proper maintenance.
  • Cost-effective: Compared to other surface materials, asphalt is relatively inexpensive.
  • Low Maintenance: Asphalt courts require minimal maintenance, usually limited to occasional cleaning and resurfacing.

Asphalt Pickleball Sports Game Court Cons:

  • Hard Surface: The hardness of asphalt can be tough on players’ joints, especially during extended play.
  • Heat Absorption: Asphalt absorbs heat, making the surface hot and potentially uncomfortable during sunny days.

Concrete is another durable and long-lasting surface material for pickleball courts. It provides a hard, smooth playing surface similar to asphalt but with a few distinct differences.

Concrete Pickleball Sports Game Court Pros:

  • Longevity: Concrete courts can last for decades if properly maintained.
  • Smooth Surface: Concrete provides an even and consistent playing surface.
  • Stability: Concrete is less likely to develop cracks or deformities than asphalt.

Concrete Pickleball Sports Game Court Cons:

  • Cost: Concrete is more expensive to install than asphalt.
  • Hard-on Joints: Like asphalt, the hard surface of concrete can be tough on players’ joints.
  • Maintenance: While concrete is durable, any cracks that do develop can be more challenging to repair.

In our recent project in Queens, N.Y., we installed two pickable courts over the existing asphalt tennis court area with two other tennis courts left existing.

We used part of the existing tennis courts and installed Mateflex tiles over the asphalt to build two pickleball sports game courts. The Mateflex tile features a narrow gauge rib system for quick drainage, high traction, and good ball bite (less skid), which is ideal for tennis court resurfacing. This is comparable to using a narrow gauge racquet string. Even after many years of wear and tear, these ribs will maintain the same width and, therefore, the same playing speed.

Each Mateflex tile has 32 individual interlocks and surrounding modules for superior court integrity. The interlocking tile is firm for a stable playing platform and reinforced for exceptional strength and longevity, which is necessary for any tennis or pickleball court design.

Pickleball Court Lines and Marking

The client chose maroon red for the outer court perimeter and royal blue for the pickleball insert.  In addition, we installed out-of-bounce netting with aluminum poles to separate the two courts to help contain the balls within each court.

Sports netting, also known as ball stop netting, keeps balls in play and out of spectator areas to protect players, spectators, and property. Netting provides players an extra layer of safety, allowing them to play confidently. It also keeps balls from flying into areas where spectators could be injured. Netting prevents balls from traveling into areas that could cause damage and aids in maintaining consistent play.  Sports game court netting also keeps the balls within the boundaries, ensuring fair competition.

pickleball-sports-game-courts-with-out-of-bounce-netting-system-queens-n.y-2Out-of-bounds netting can be custom-built to fit any size space and is made from durable materials that can withstand heavy impacts and harsh weather conditions.

Pickleball sports game court netting by Dominator was installed, which can also be extended higher for playing a volleyball game.

Synthetic Turf for Sports Game Court Fringe

Our team installed synthetic turf fringe all around the court. It is also a visual border as a transition from the Mateflex polypropylene tile to the lower asphalt base.

The second tennis court will eventually be remodeled into a new tennis court, or we might put pickable courts sideways. The clients will use this for now and decide whether to keep the old tennis court or add more pickable courts and possibly a putting green. This is the latest sports game court installation done by Gappsi in Queens, NY.
