Nicolock paving stone driveway designed and installed by Gappsi in Dix Hills Suffolk county NY. This driveway was awarded first place in a national contest for Hardscape designs in North America. Combination of multi color blends of bayberry and Granite City outlined with pewter and charcoal borders and inlays. The landscape was kept simple, the driveway defined layout, design and colors it’s all is needed to brighten this front yard, driveway and entrance.
This driveway was constructed with a 10 inch RCA base and granite pavers were installed on one inch of fine sand. The paving stone sizes were 6”x 9”, with a flamed and tumbled texture finish. These granite pavers are 1-1/4” thick and can be used for pedestrian and vehicular trafficked areas. The joints in between the pavers were filled with polymeric sand, then compacted with a mechanical vibratory plate and sealed. This fire pit was built with cinder block and veneered with Eldorado cultured stones. A U-Shaped sitting wall with two end columns were also installed around the fire pit. Blue stone double-sided rock faced coping were installed to complete the top of the fire pit, the walls, and columns. The columns also serve as pedestal for accent lighting, and the colors of the noce travertine for the pool patio and coping were a perfect contrast to make the fire pit area stand out.
The driveway installation started with the excavation of existing asphalt and sub base. New concrete base with fiber mesh was installed with Amagansett granite pavers is laid over a thin layer of graded sand. Stone was selected from the Gappsi natural stone collection. Jumbo Belgian block was installed for the street curb and driveway entrance. The sealing process begins with pressure washing the entire patio, removing all dirt/debris from the stone surface and in between the joints. Next, Nexgel Techniseal synthetic sand is applied in between the pavers joints and vibrated with a mechanical plate compactor. The plate compactor has rubber rollers to prevent the stones from cracking or scratching. This vibrating process allows the sand to fall in between the joints and density. Then, we clean the pavers with brooms and landscape blowers, to clean the excess sand from the pavers surface and to evenly spread the sand in between the pavers joints. The next step is to wash the pavers by misting water to penetrate the synthetic sand into the paver joints all the way down below the pavers. The sand and water activate a chemical reaction of the pollen that’s in the sand to cause the sand to harden. Finally, the application of the sealer, two parts components urethane dealer, specially formulated for Gappsi, is applied to the pavers surface and the sand joints to prevent stones from staining, extend their life cycle and further enhance their texture, color, and surface.
