A newly renovated basketball court was built with Mateflex tiles in Atlantic Beach, NY.  This court brings a fresh, modern look to the community’s recreational space. Previously, this court was constructed with asphalt, which had deteriorated over time, leading to potholes and uneven surfaces that impacted the playability and safety of the court. Recognizing the need for an upgrade, a meticulous transformation took place to enhance the court’s functionality and aesthetics.

The refurbishment process began with addressing the existing asphalt surface. Over time, asphalt courts develop cracks and potholes due to exposure to the elements.  Regular wear and tear and natural ground settling. Before any new materials could be added, it was essential to ensure the surface was as level and smooth as possible. All potholes and uneven areas were carefully patched using a high-quality patch bond material to achieve this. This step was crucial in creating a stable foundation for the new court surface.

Once the surface was prepared correctly, new Metaflex tiles were installed over the existing asphalt. Metaflex tiles are an innovative flooring solution for outdoor sports game courts. They offer superior durability, shock absorption, and enhanced traction for players. These tiles not only improve the overall play experience but also contribute to the longevity of the court. They require less maintenance compared to traditional asphalt surfaces.

One of the standout design elements of the renovated court is its color scheme. The basketball inlays, including the keys, were highlighted with navy blue tiles. The main field of the court was finished in a lighter blue shade. This color contrast not only enhances the visual appeal of the court but also provides a clear delineation of key playing areas, making it easier for players to navigate and enjoy the game.

Precise white lines were applied for court markings to enhance the court’s professional appearance and usability. These lines ensure players can accurately gauge boundaries, free-throw lanes, and three-point arcs, maintaining consistency with standard basketball court dimensions. The attention to detail in striping helps improve the overall experience for casual and competitive players.

Synthetic Turf Finge Surrounds the Court

Beyond the playing surface of the basketball court built with Mateflex tiles, another key enhancement was the installation of a synthetic turf fringe surrounding the court. This feature serves multiple purposes. First, it creates a seamless visual transition between the court and the surrounding fence, giving the space a clean, polished look. While many elements of the court were upgraded, the existing basketball hoops were retained. This decision was made to preserve the court’s functionality while minimizing unnecessary costs. The hoops were in good condition, providing local basketball enthusiasts with a reliable and familiar playing experience. Retaining the original hoops also ensured that the court remained recognizable to regular players who had used it before the renovation.

Unused sloped backyard areas can be transformed into usable spaces by incorporating terraced gardens, retaining walls, rock gardens, or even dedicated planting zones that utilize the slope for varied plant life. This will manage potential erosion issues and create distinct levels within the yard, turning a challenging slope into a visually appealing and functional outdoor space.

This recent project, designed and built by Gappsi in Commack, N.Y., involved using the unused sloped backyard area and making it very useful.

  • Slope Severity:  The degree of slope will determine the type of structures needed, with steeper slopes requiring more substantial retaining walls.
  • Drainage: Ensure proper drainage to prevent water accumulation and erosion, especially in areas with heavy rainfall.
  • Sunlight Exposure: Consider how the slope affects sunlight exposure when choosing plants for different areas.

We built a multi-level retaining wall using the Nicolock Granite City Firma wall. The first level creates a flat area for the 18×36 traditional pavilion with the Roman pattern G045 natural blue-gray limestone patio floor from the Gappsi Natural Stone Collection.

Custom Traditional Pavilion with Passion Spa Designed and Built By Gappsi

The 18 x 36 pavilion was built with a bare wood ceiling stained mahogany.  An audio system and electrical heating system were also installed so that people could enjoy year-round entertainment.  Behind the TV wall, we created an area with a door in the back for additional storage.  The wall was veneered with silver travertine tumbled, and the TV was hung on the wall.

Steps on both sides of the patio access the pavilion area, also used as a ping-pong area. This is the latest masonry-designed sports court and pavilion incorporated into an entire abandoned area. It became the most helpful part of the backyard. It is the newest project built by Gappsi in Commack, NY.

Bocce Court Construction in Manhattan, NY

We installed this bocce court in Murray Hill, Manhattan, NY. The bar’s name is Mr. B Bar, and it is for indoor use in a bar. We installed synthetic turf against the back and the front wall—the ball asset on a custom-cut wood. For the holder, we painted regulations lines over the artificial turf installed over a set leveling base with foam. As you can see, the ball bounces back from the wall without making too much noise. The walls of the bocce court are built out of synthetic wood. This is the latest sports game court, a bocce game court built in Manhattan, NY, by Gappsi.

Outdoor Backyard Oven for Making Bread and Food Hobby

Imagine the irresistible aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through your yard, thanks to your outdoor backyard oven, which turns simple gatherings into warm, rustic feasts.

Welcome to Belvedere Spinello, Italy, My Hometown

Welcome to my property in Italy. I own a field near my hometown of Belvedere Spinello, an agricultural area. Here, I plant seeds and grow grains to make flour. We have begun getting the field ready, starting with plowing the ground. The following method is to flatten it and then seed it.

On one side of the property, I planted a white flour called Maiorca; on the right side, I planted semolina flour called Senatore Cappelli, and I divided the field in half with a visual line. These two flowers I planted here are no longer on the market, but you can buy and plant the seeds from a lab and plant them. They are not GMO seeds or genetically modified. The seeds are original and have been used for hundreds of years. They are not used anymore because they don’t generate that much product unless you put a lot of fertilizer on them and buy them genetically modified.

The plants are now 5 to 6 inches tall. They will grow taller and fully grown and be dried by June. We will gather the grains, make flour, and import it to the United States.

Harvesting the Wheat

We harvest wheat in June when everything is mature and dry. We dump the grains into a dump truck and take them to a mill. This mill has been in my hometown for hundreds of years and has been modified to be more mechanical. This is the last process in which we turn the grains into flour before I bring it to the United States. It is an ancient system that is still in operation today.

Let’s make some bread in my outdoor backyard oven.

First, I mixed the yeast with the new flour. Then, I will use the yeast tomorrow to make the next loaf. I will cover it and let it ferment for 24 hours. I prepared this yeast 24 hours ago and will use it to make the dough for the bread today with you.

The next step in making my bread is adding some water.  We are going to weigh some water before we add it in.  I melted the yeast with the water and added the flour. Both maiorca and semolina flour are added to the mixture. Now, I am going to add the salt. After the salt is added to the dough, it is essential to allow the dough to relax.

Now, I am shaping the dough.  This is the final step, and touch before letting it rest.  I let it rest until it is time to bake.  Letting the dough rest is crucial in baking because it allows the gluten strands to relax and redistribute, making the dough easier to shape, preventing shrinkage, and ultimately resulting in a better texture and rise in the final baked good; essentially, it gives the gluten a “break” after kneading, allowing it to become more pliable and elastic.

We can have your custom-built outdoor backyard oven hand-painted from the picture you provided. The tiles will be hand-painted and then baked to make a forever-lasting finish. This oven in the Gappsi showroom has a picture of me, Giuseppe, on one side.  This picture was taken in my niece’s orange garden in Italy. Next, I had a hat painted on the front hood of the oven, “Make Pizza Great Again.”  On the other side is a picture of my wife and I. On the back, I have pictures of my hometown, Belvedere Spinello, on the left and right. We have been using this oven to test the difference between a wood-burning oven and a gas-burn backyard outdoor oven.

Sorrento-Style Outdoor Backyard Oven

This is our Sorrento-style oven. This oven is both gas and wood-fired to heat. An oven that can be heated with both gas and wood is called a “hybrid oven” or a “dual fuel oven,” allowing you to use the convenience of gas cooking alongside the smoky flavor of wood-fired cooking, depending on your preference;

We will bake the bread when the gas burner reaches the required temperature. We usually use wood to cook food.
Once the bread is ready to be baked, I score it with a circular cut. The oven is almost ready. When the temperature has come down, we will bake the bread at 480 degrees Fahrenheit.

We started by installing a new vinyl pool. The pool measured 16 x 36 inches and had a depth of 43 to 66 inches, including a gradual slope. In addition, we installed stairs to the raised turf area on both sides of the pool.

For the coping on the top of the wall and the pool, we used G036 marble from the Gappsi Natural Stone Collection. This gray natural stone was installed in a French pattern on the top patio.

Synthetic Turf for a Maintenance-Free Backyard

We installed synthetic turf on top of the raised area in the backyard area, adding to the maintenance-free features of the backyard makeover.  This unique artificial turf is manufactured in Italy by a great company that makes synthetic turf for all FIFA regulation soccer fields for European teams.

Synthetic lawns require almost no maintenance besides occasional cleaning. They don’t need mowing, fertilizing, aerating, or weeding. Durability is a big plus. Vinyl Liner Pool Auto Covers

The pool is also equipped with an autocover.  A pool auto cover is primarily used to significantly reduce water evaporation, conserve heat in the pool, minimize debris buildup, and, most importantly, provide a safety barrier to prevent accidental access to the pool, especially for children and pets, all with the convenience of opening and closing with the press of a button.
