Planning Your Dream Backyard in Southampton

Creating your dream backyard is one of the most exciting home improvement projects you can take on. It’s about more than just adding a feature; it’s about designing a lifestyle. For homeowners in Southampton, a backyard oasis can mean a private retreat for quiet afternoons, a lively hub for family gatherings, or the perfect spot for summer entertaining. The centerpiece of this vision is often a beautiful inground pool, but the planning process involves much more. From selecting the right pool type to budgeting for landscaping and long-term maintenance, every detail matters. Thinking through these elements ahead of time ensures your final space is not only stunning but also functional and sustainable for years of enjoyment.

Choosing the Right Inground Pool for Your Home

The first major decision in your backyard transformation is choosing the type of inground pool. This choice affects everything from your initial budget and construction timeline to the look of your finished space and how much time you’ll spend on upkeep. The three main options are vinyl liner, fiberglass, and gunite, each with its own set of benefits. Your property’s specific conditions, your design preferences, and your budget will all play a role in determining the best fit. At Gappsi, we help homeowners find the perfect swimming pool by walking them through the pros and cons of each material, ensuring the foundation of their backyard oasis is exactly what they envisioned.

Vinyl Liner Pools

Vinyl liner pools are a popular and versatile option for many homeowners. They are constructed with a custom-fitted sheet of vinyl placed over a steel or polymer frame. One of the biggest draws of a vinyl liner pool is the initial cost, which is often lower than fiberglass or gunite. The liner itself is smooth to the touch and non-porous, which helps inhibit algae growth and simplifies cleaning. While the liner will need to be replaced every 8 to 12 years, modern vinyls are incredibly durable and come in a huge variety of colors and patterns, giving you plenty of design flexibility without a massive upfront investment.

Fiberglass Pools

If low maintenance and durability are at the top of your list, a fiberglass pool is an excellent choice. These pools are pre-molded in a factory and delivered to your home in one piece, which can significantly shorten the installation time. The surface of a fiberglass pool is smooth and non-porous, making it resistant to algae and gentle on your skin. This also means you’ll likely spend less time and money on chemicals over the life of the pool. While the initial cost can be higher than vinyl, many homeowners find the long-term savings and ease of care to be a worthwhile trade-off for their busy lifestyles.

Gunite Pools

For those who want complete creative control, gunite pools offer limitless design possibilities. Gunite is a mixture of cement, sand, and water that is sprayed onto a rebar framework, allowing you to create a pool in any shape or size you can imagine. This makes it the perfect choice for unique backyard layouts or for adding custom features like built-in benches, tanning ledges, and intricate water features. While gunite pools typically have the highest initial cost and require more intensive maintenance, their durability and design flexibility are unmatched, allowing you to build a truly one-of-a-kind backyard masterpiece.

Understanding the Cost of an Inground Pool Installation

When budgeting for a new pool, it’s important to look beyond the price of the pool itself. The total cost includes the installation, but also a range of other essential and optional expenses that bring your vision to life. These can include everything from the surrounding patio and landscaping to safety fencing and lighting. Understanding these additional costs upfront helps you create a realistic budget and avoid surprises down the road. A comprehensive plan accounts for not just the construction but also the finishing touches that make your pool area a complete and cohesive outdoor living space. This foresight ensures you can build the backyard you want without compromising on quality or safety.

Average Installation Costs

The initial installation cost of an inground pool varies widely based on the material you choose. Each type has a different price point for the basic package, which typically includes the pool shell, pump, and filter system. These figures provide a solid starting point for your budget, but remember that factors like site accessibility, soil conditions, and local permit fees can also influence the final price. It’s always best to get a detailed quote that breaks down all the included elements so you know exactly what you’re paying for before construction begins.

Vinyl, Fiberglass, and Gunite Price Ranges

Generally, you can expect vinyl liner pools to have the lowest upfront installation cost, often ranging from $50,000 to $80,000. Fiberglass pools fall in the middle, with average installation costs between $65,000 and $100,000, reflecting their factory-built quality and quicker installation time. Gunite pools sit at the higher end of the spectrum, typically starting at $75,000 and going well over $150,000, depending on the complexity of the custom design. These ranges are estimates, but they give you a clear idea of how your choice of material will impact your initial investment.

Additional Installation Expenses to Consider

Beyond the pool itself, several other components are necessary to complete your project. These additional expenses are what transform a simple swimming pool into a fully functional and beautiful backyard retreat. From the hardscaping that defines the space to the safety features required by law, each element plays a critical role. Planning for these items from the start ensures a seamless installation process and a finished product that is both safe and stunning. Thinking about these details early on allows you to integrate them perfectly into your overall design.

Pool Decking and Landscaping

The area around your pool is just as important as the pool itself. Pool decking, or the patio area, provides space for lounging and entertaining. Upgraded materials like natural stone or elegant porcelain pavers can add between $10,000 and $25,000 to your budget. Thoughtful landscaping softens the hardscape and integrates the pool into your yard. Gappsi’s expert masonry and landscape design teams can help you create a cohesive look that complements both your home and your new pool.

Fencing and Safety Features

Safety is a top priority for any pool owner. Most municipalities, including those in Long Island, require a fence of a certain height to enclose the pool area to prevent accidents. The cost for fencing can range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the material and length you need. Gappsi offers a variety of fencing options, from classic aluminum to modern composite, to meet safety codes while enhancing your backyard’s aesthetic. This is a non-negotiable part of your budget that ensures peace of mind.

Heating Systems and Automatic Covers

To extend your swimming season into the cooler months, a heating system is a great investment, typically costing between $4,000 and $8,000. An automatic pool cover, which can run from $3,000 to $7,000, offers multiple benefits. It not only improves safety by covering the water’s surface but also helps retain heat, reduces water evaporation, and keeps debris out of the pool. Together, these features add convenience and allow you to get more use out of your pool throughout the year.

Lighting, Water Features, and Automation

Modern features can truly personalize your pool experience. LED lighting creates ambiance for evening swims, while water features like waterfalls or deck jets add sound and visual appeal. Pool automation systems allow you to control everything from the pump and heater to the lights and water features right from your smartphone. These enhancements add another layer of luxury and convenience, turning your pool into a high-tech oasis that is easy to manage and a joy to use day or night.

Long-Term Ownership and Maintenance Costs

Your financial planning shouldn’t stop once the pool is built. Owning a pool comes with ongoing maintenance costs that are important to factor into your annual household budget. These expenses include everything from chemicals and electricity to occasional repairs and eventual equipment replacement. Being aware of these long-term costs from the beginning ensures that you can comfortably afford to keep your pool in pristine condition, protecting your investment and guaranteeing it remains a source of enjoyment for your family for many years.

Annual Upkeep for Chemicals and Electricity

Every year, you’ll need to budget for the essentials that keep your pool clean and running. Water chemicals, including chlorine, pH balancers, and algaecide, can cost between $500 and $1,000 annually. The electricity needed to run the pump and filter is another significant expense, typically ranging from $500 to $2,500 per year, depending on the size of your pool and how often you run the equipment. These predictable costs are a fundamental part of pool ownership.

Future Replacement Costs

Over time, certain parts of your pool will need to be replaced. If you choose a vinyl liner pool, for example, you should plan on replacing the liner every 8 to 12 years, which can cost between $5,000 and $7,000. Other equipment, like the pump or heater, will also eventually wear out. Setting aside a small amount each year for these future expenses is a smart way to prepare, so you’re not caught off guard when a major replacement is needed.

Key Considerations Before You Commit

Installing a pool is a major commitment of both time and money, so it’s wise to think through a few key questions before breaking ground. Beyond the excitement of design and construction, practical considerations about your long-term plans and finances will help you make a decision you’ll be happy with for years to come. Taking a moment to reflect on how a pool fits into your lifestyle and your home’s future value is a crucial step. This ensures that your investment aligns with your personal and financial goals, making the entire process smoother and more rewarding.

Financial Planning for Your Pool

Before moving forward, take a hard look at your finances. A pool is a significant investment, and it’s important to ensure it fits comfortably within your budget, including the ongoing maintenance costs. Also, consider how long you plan to stay in your home. While a pool adds value, it can take five to ten years to see a substantial return on your investment. If you see yourself moving in the near future, you may not recoup the full cost, so it’s important to weigh the immediate lifestyle benefits against the long-term financial picture.

Thinking About Long-Term Use and Home Value

Think about how your family will use the pool now and in the future. Will it be a hub for kids and their friends, a quiet spot for relaxation, or a centerpiece for entertaining? Your intended use can influence design choices. A pool can certainly increase your property’s appeal and resale value, especially in a desirable area like Southampton. However, its primary value should be the enjoyment it brings to you and your family. A well-designed and properly maintained pool is an asset that enhances both your lifestyle and your home.

Beyond the Pool: Creating a Complete Outdoor Oasis

A swimming pool is often the star of the show, but the supporting elements are what create a truly complete outdoor oasis. Think about how you want to use the entire space. Do you envision a cozy fire pit for cool evenings, an outdoor kitchen for alfresco dining, or a comfortable lounge area under a pergola? Integrating these features creates different “zones” for various activities, making your backyard more versatile and inviting. Gappsi specializes in designing and building comprehensive outdoor living environments, ensuring every element, from the pavilions to the patios, works together in harmony.

Adding a Custom Sports Court

To make your backyard the ultimate destination for fun and activity, consider adding a custom sports court. A basketball court, pickleball court, or multi-game surface can provide endless entertainment for all ages and perfectly complements a pool area. As we did for a recent project in Southampton, we can design a court that fits your specific space and aesthetic preferences. Using high-quality materials like Mateflex tiles, we can build a durable, safe, and attractive court that turns your backyard into a private resort. Check out our synthetic turf and game courts to see how you can add another layer of recreation to your outdoor oasis.

custom-basketball-court-installation-in-southampton-ny-4A Custom-Designed Court for the Homeowner’s Needs

Not every property has the same space available for a full-sized basketball court, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the game. For this Southampton project, we designed a custom-sized court to maximize the area while still keeping the game authentic and fun.

The court includes a 3-point line, although it was slightly scaled down to fit the available space. This gives the homeowners and their guests the whole basketball experience.  Shooting, dribbling, and gameplay while making the most of the property layout.

The Mateflex Tile System

The foundation of this project lies in the Mateflex tile system, one of the most trusted names in sports flooring. For this installation, we first prepared an asphalt base, ensuring a smooth and solid surface for durability. Then, we installed Mateflex TopCourt tiles, designed explicitly for outdoor basketball courts.

What makes Mateflex tiles so special?

  • Shock Absorption & Comfort – They reduce stress on joints, making the game more enjoyable and safer.
  • All-Weather Durability – The tiles are resistant to weather extremes, from summer heat to winter frost, ensuring longevity.
  • Low Maintenance – They are easy to clean, resistant to fading, and require little upkeep compared to traditional surfaces.
  • Performance Quality – With excellent ball response and traction, they mimic the feel of a professional basketball surface.

custom-basketball-court-installation-in-southampton-ny-3For this Southampton project, the homeowners chose a vibrant color scheme that brought the court to life:

  • Red tiles for the border.
  • Navy blue tiles for the inlay.
  • Royal blue tiles for the keys.

The contrast of bold blues against the striking red border created a modern, eye-catching design. To finish it off, we carefully added white striping to outline the court lines, ensuring both style and function.

The Dominator 72-Inch Adjustable Basketball Hoop

A court is only as good as the hoop that goes with it. For this installation, we installed a Dominator 72-inch basketball hoop, one of the top choices for residential courts.

What sets this hoop apart is its adjustability. Players of all ages and skill levels can enjoy the court by lowering or raising the hoop to the desired height. Whether kids are practicing layups or adults are playing a competitive game, the Dominator hoop is built for performance and durability. Made with heavy-duty materials, it can withstand the demands of daily use while maintaining its sleek, professional look.

One of the challenges of building a backyard court is keeping the ball contained. To solve this, we surrounded the Southampton court with out-of-bounds netting on three sides. This netting ensures that basketballs stay within the play area, reducing the chance of lost balls and protecting the surrounding property.

In addition to functionality, aesthetics were also a priority for this project. We built a Cumaru wood wall on one side of the court. While the netting provides containment, the Cumaru wall offers a warm, natural design element that complements the outdoor setting. Cumaru wood, known for its durability and rich color, serves as both a functional barrier and a beautiful architectural feature.

Synthetic Fringe for a Finished Look

Attention to detail is what truly elevates a project. To complete the basketball court design, we added a 1-foot-wide synthetic turf fringe around the entire perimeter. This not only frames the court beautifully but also provides a clean, polished transition from the playing surface to the surrounding landscape. The turf creates a softer edge, reducing dirt and debris from tracking onto the court, while enhancing the overall visual appeal.

This Southampton project is a perfect example of why Mateflex courts are a growing trend among homeowners. Here are some of the top benefits:

  1. Customization – Whether you have a large property or a smaller backyard, Mateflex courts can be designed to fit your space.
  2. Durability – Built to withstand heavy use and harsh weather, these courts are long-lasting investments.
  3. Safety & Comfort – With shock-absorbing properties, they help protect players’ joints and minimize injury risk.
  4. Aesthetic Appeal – With endless color combinations and design possibilities, you can create a court that’s as stylish as it is functional.
  5. Value Addition – A backyard basketball court adds significant value to a home, appealing to both current homeowners and future buyers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I decide between a pool and a sports court if I only have room for one? This really comes down to your family’s lifestyle. Think about how you want to spend your time outdoors. A pool is fantastic for relaxing, cooling off on hot days, and low-impact exercise. A sports court, on the other hand, is all about active play and friendly competition. Consider who will use the space most and what activity will bring your family the most joy on a regular basis.

What is the most overlooked cost when installing an inground pool? Many people budget for the pool and the patio right around it, but they often underestimate the cost of landscaping and site work. Creating a cohesive look involves more than just the pool itself; it includes grading the surrounding yard for proper drainage, adding plants and trees for privacy and beauty, and installing lighting. These finishing touches are what truly create an oasis, so it’s wise to include them in your initial budget.

The basketball court in the article was custom-sized. How small can a court be and still be fun to play on? You don’t need a regulation-sized court to have a great time. A well-designed half-court or even just a dedicated shooting area with a 3-point line can provide hours of fun and practice. The key is smart design that makes the most of your available yard. We can scale a court to fit your specific dimensions while ensuring it remains a functional and enjoyable space for play.

In simple terms, what’s the real difference in upkeep for the three pool types? Think of it this way: fiberglass pools are the lowest maintenance, as their smooth, non-porous surface resists algae and requires fewer chemicals. Vinyl liner pools are also relatively easy to care for day-to-day, but you will need to plan for replacing the liner every 8 to 12 years. Gunite pools demand the most attention, as their porous surface requires more brushing, more chemicals to stay balanced, and may eventually need to be resurfaced.

Can you handle my entire backyard project, or do I need to hire separate contractors for the pool, patio, and landscaping? We can absolutely manage the entire project from start to finish. Our specialty is creating complete, cohesive outdoor living spaces. This means our team handles everything from the initial design and permits to the pool installation, masonry, court construction, and final landscaping. Having one team oversee the whole process ensures every element works together beautifully and saves you the headache of coordinating multiple contractors.

Key Takeaways

  • Budget for the entire project, not just the pool: A realistic financial plan for an inground pool includes the initial installation plus essential extras like decking, safety fencing, and landscaping, along with long-term costs for maintenance and utilities.
  • Choose a pool material that fits your lifestyle: Each pool type (vinyl, fiberglass, or gunite) comes with different costs, maintenance requirements, and design possibilities, so it’s important to select the one that aligns with your budget and aesthetic goals.
  • Create a complete oasis with complementary features: A pool is a fantastic centerpiece, but integrating other elements like a custom sports court, a pavilion, or an outdoor kitchen is what creates a truly functional and enjoyable outdoor living space.

Pickleball and Basketball Combo Court Built in Head of the Harbor, Saint James, NY

View Gappsi’s YouTube Channel for Videos of Pickleball and Basketball Combo Court Built in Head of the Harbor, Saint James, NY

At Gappsi, we take pride in creating custom sports game courts that are both functional and visually appealing, such as this Pickleball and Basketball Combo Court. Our latest project in Head of the Harbor, Saint James, NY, is a perfect example of craftsmanship meeting creativity.  A combination pickleball and basketball court designed to meet the homeowner’s vision while adding a vibrant new recreation space to their property.

Preparing the Court: Precision in Every Step

Every great court begins with careful preparation, and for this project, we started with a detailed process of stripping the pickleball court in preparation for painting. Once the surface was ready, we moved to the line work.  One of the most critical steps in ensuring a court is regulation-ready and visually sharp.

We primed the lines first to create a base that would make the paint stand out, then applied the second coat of bright white for crisp, clean markings. As we worked, the homeowner requested a modification: initially, the basketball hoop had been placed on one side of the court, but they quickly realized that the sun’s position caused glare during play. To accommodate their needs, we decided to relocate the basketball hoop to the opposite side for optimal playing conditions.

pickleball-and-basketball-combo-court-built-in-head-of-the-harbor-saint-james-ny5Before moving the hoop, our team carefully measured and marked out the basketball lines. Martin, our line-striping specialist, ensured every measurement was exact.   When it comes to court markings, there’s no room for mistakes.

Design and Color Choices: A Court That Pops

The design of this court is both functional and visually appealing. For the playable pickleball area, we used a light blue surface coating, providing high visibility for the ball and a professional finish. Additionally, we applied a grass green color to the out-of-bounds area.  Creating a sharp contrast and enhancing the overall aesthetic.

The pickleball sports game court lines were painted in bright white, making them easily visible from any angle. For the basketball sports game court integration, we added a darker blue 3-point line that stands out without clashing with the pickleball markings. This dual-color approach ensures both sports can be played without confusion between lines.

Premium Equipment for the Best Experience

This isn’t just any recreational setup.  It’s built for serious play. We installed a standard pickleball net system, providing the correct tension and height for competitive-level games. For the basketball half, we chose a Dominator Professional Adjustable Basketball Hoop, known for its durability, smooth height adjustment, and stable performance. This allows the court to accommodate players of all ages and skill levels, from casual family fun to competitive matchups.

pickleball sports game court and basketball sports game courtFencing and Perimeter Design

To protect the court and provide a clean, contained look, we installed a deer fence around the entire perimeter. This not only keeps wildlife out but also helps contain stray balls during play. The wall is reinforced with one-and-a-quarter-inch top rail pipes and one-and-a-half-inch posts, ensuring long-term stability even through harsh weather conditions.

For the finishing touch, the surrounding area was framed and filled with blue slate flower bed gravel. This choice not only looks attractive but also provides excellent drainage, reducing mud and dirt from entering the court. The gravel perimeter acts as a natural buffer zone, keeping the court surface cleaner and easier to maintain.

Challenges and Adaptability: Moving the Hoop

One of the hallmarks of Gappsi is our ability to adapt mid-project. When the homeowner realized the basketball hoop’s original position caused sun glare, we didn’t see it as a setback.  It was an opportunity to improve the outcome. We carefully re-measured, re-striped, and prepared the new side for the hoop installation.  This ensured that gameplay would be comfortable at any time of day.

By the end, the new hoop placement felt like it had been the plan all along.  The homeowner was thrilled with the adjustment.

pickleball-and-basketball-combo-court-built-in-head-of-the-harbor-saint-james-ny3Blending Two Sports in One Space

Designing a court that supports both pickleball and basketball requires precision planning. The court must be large enough to accommodate both layouts without crowding the space.  Additionally, the line colors must be distinct to prevent confusion during play. In this project, the light blue pickleball sports game court with white lines stands out visually from the darker blue basketball lines.  This ensures clarity for players switching between games.

This dual-sport approach also maximizes property value. Homeowners can enjoy two popular sports in the same footprint, making it an ideal setup for families, guests, and even small community gatherings.

Why Pickleball and Basketball are a Perfect Match

Pickleball has experienced a surge in popularity in recent years, attracting players of all ages due to its accessibility and fast-paced nature. Basketball, on the other hand, remains a timeless favorite for both casual and competitive athletes. Combining these two sports into a single court enables year-round recreation.  Promotes active lifestyles and serves as a gathering place for friends and family.

For the Head of the Harbor homeowner, this court will serve as a hub of entertainment, fitness, and friendly competition for years to come.

The Gappsi Difference: Quality and Attention to Detail

Our commitment to craftsmanship, functionality, and aesthetics guides every Gappsi project. We don’t just build sports game courts.  We create lasting recreational spaces that integrate seamlessly into each property’s unique layout. From the color combinations to the equipment selection, every element of this court was chosen to enhance the playing experience.

A Grand Slam Addition: Professional Backyard Batting Cage Installation in Watermill, NY by Gappsi

View Gappsi’s YouTube Channel for Videos of A Grand Slam Addition: Professional Backyard Batting Cage Installation in Watermill, NY by Gappsi

This is a grand slam addition!  Check out our latest professional backyard batting cage installation in Watermill, NY.  In the picturesque town of Watermill, NY, nestled in the heart of the Hamptons, residential properties often feature luxurious and state-of-the-art outdoor spaces. However, this recent project, completed by Gappsi, brings a whole new level of premium athletic performance to a private residence.  A professional backyard batting cage installation that rivals the training environments of elite baseball facilities.

This custom-built batting cage was designed and installed by Gappsi.  It provides the homeowner and any aspiring baseball player in the family with a space that supports skill development, consistent practice, and pure enjoyment. Here’s a detailed breakdown of this high-end installation.  It stands out as one of the most advanced private batting cages in Long Island.

Premier Douglas Batting Cage: Built for Performance

At the heart of the project is a Premier Douglas batting cage, measuring an impressive 70 feet long, 14 feet wide, and 12 feet tall. This size allows ample room for both the batter and pitcher to move freely.  This ensures safe and comfortable practice sessions. The design mirrors what is found at professional training grounds.  It offers the full length required for realistic ball flight and swing analysis.

professional-batting-cage-installed-in-watermill-ny-2The batting cage netting is supported by a steel cable system, which runs the entire length of the structure. This method ensures the net remains taut and secure, preventing sagging or movement during high-velocity impacts. The tensioned cables also help the cage withstand the elements, making it a durable and long-lasting investment.

Illuminated for Night Play: Premium Lighting Installation

Practice doesn’t need to stop when the sun sets. Gappsi included a double row of high-quality LED lights, illuminating both sides of the batting cage. This thoughtful lighting layout ensures that every part of the cage is evenly lit.  This eliminates shadows that could disrupt vision or timing, providing a clear view. Whether it’s an early morning training session or a late evening workout, the players will always have optimal visibility.

The inclusion of these lights reflects the attention to detail in this project. It turns a typical backyard installation into a 24/7 baseball training facility.

Precision Surface Design: Turf, Fringe, and Functionality

A great batting cage starts from the ground up.  Gappsi paid close attention to surface details to enhance both performance and aesthetics. The flooring features a natural green synthetic grass base, providing a visually appealing and soft surface underfoot. This type of turf mimics real grass but offers superior durability and weather resistance.

professional-batting-cage-installed-in-watermill-ny-1On both sides of the cage, Gappsi installed an 18-inch-wide synthetic turf fringe. The fringe stands 1.5 inches in pile height, creating a contrast in texture and color from the central green turf. This not only adds a polished, finished look to the installation.  It also serves a functional purpose by aiding drainage, controlling bounce-back, and providing comfort during long training sessions.

This combination of turf layers creates a true-to-life baseball training ground while minimizing maintenance, mud, and wear.

Movable Maroon Pitching Mat: Versatility at Its Finest

To accommodate players of various heights and skill levels, Gappsi included a movable maroon-colored pitching mat. The mat can be positioned anywhere within the cage.  This offers flexible practice routines, whether for overhand pitching, underhand soft toss, or specialized drills.

The maroon color stands out clearly against the green turf, helping both pitchers and batters align properly. This feature offers a more dynamic training environment, enabling a range of drills and real-time pitching scenario simulations.

I-Pitch Spin Ball Machine: Cutting-Edge Baseball Technology

Perhaps the most remarkable feature of this installation is the addition of the I-Pitch Spin Ball Pitching Machine. This isn’t your average backyard pitching device—this is professional-grade technology.  Used by MLB teams and elite collegiate programs.

Batting Cages for Backyards & FieldsThe I-Pitch machine offers a wide range of pitching styles, including fastballs, curveballs, sliders, and more. It can simulate real pitchers’ spins and release points with incredible accuracy. Controlled electronically, it can be programmed to deliver pitches at varying speeds, angles, and trajectories.

For the serious athlete, this means game-level training every single day. For families and baseball enthusiasts, it turns the backyard into a true player development center.

Why This Batting Cage Stands Out

What makes this installation in Watermill so unique is its combination of professional functionality and residential convenience. Here are just a few highlights:

  • Premier size and materials: Built to professional dimensions with top-tier materials, ensuring performance and longevity.
  • Custom lighting system: Enables early morning and nighttime training to be possible and enjoyable.
  • Dual turf zones: Engineered for performance, drainage, and visual appeal.
  • Adjustable pitching mat: Enhances usability for players of all levels.
  • Advanced pitching machine: Mimics the real-world experience of facing a top-level pitcher.

Every element of the design was carefully chosen to meet the standards of serious players while seamlessly integrating into a residential property.

A Home Run by Gappsi

Creating the Perfect Pickleball Court in Patchogue, N.Y., as the popularity of pickleball is surging across the United States.  Particularly in suburban communities and recreational apartment complexes, where people seek fun and accessible ways to stay active. In Patchogue, NY, Gappsi continues to set the standard for elite court design and installation with its latest completed project.  A beautifully crafted pickleball sports game court that blends durability, performance, and visual appeal. Whether you’re a resident of Patchogue or simply an admirer of superior outdoor construction.  This court is a stellar example of Gappsi’s quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Project Overview: Pickleball Court Built in Patchogue, NY

This newly constructed pickleball court is the latest addition to an apartment complex in Patchogue, NY. Gappsi was contracted to design and install a high-performance court that meets both recreational and aesthetic demands. The project involved several layers of expert-level engineering.  From the foundational structure to the finishing touches of paint and netting. Every element was chosen and executed with purpose.  Ensuring long-term use, low maintenance, and seamless integration into the surrounding environment.

Like all high-performance sports game courts, this project began from the ground up. The base of the pickleball court was constructed using recycled concrete.  A sustainable choice that provides a strong and stable foundation while reducing environmental impact. Recycled concrete offers excellent compaction and drainage, both of which are critical factors for any outdoor court. It also provides a smoother surface for the layers that follow.

On top of the recycled concrete base, two layers of asphalt were applied. This multi-layer asphalt installation ensures a level playing surface.  Helping to reduce surface cracks and enhancing the court’s longevity. By layering asphalt, the court gains improved durability and resistance to wear from both the elements and frequent use.  This is particularly important in high-traffic residential areas, such as this apartment complex in Patchogue.

Vibrant Court Surface with Laykold Paint

Once the asphalt was fully cured and leveled, the surface was painted using Laykold paint systems. It is one of the most recognized and trusted brands in the sports surfacing industry. Laykold is renowned for its superior grip, weather resistance, and shock absorption, making it an ideal choice for pickleball.

This not only enhances visual appeal but also provides a clear distinction between playing zones and out-of-bounds areas. The white striping applied to the surface was done with professional-grade precision to meet standard pickleball court regulations, ensuring the court is ready for both casual games and more competitive matchups.

Professional-Grade Pickleball Net System

A pickleball court is only as good as its net, and Gappsi went with the best. The court was outfitted with an all-aluminum net system, manufactured by Dominator, a leading name in premium sports equipment. Aluminum is an ideal choice for outdoor net systems due to its lightweight nature.  It is also resistant to rust and can withstand harsh weather conditions over time. The Dominator net not only ensures high performance but also contributes to the court’s clean, sleek aesthetic.

Custom Perimeter Netting for Safety and Aesthetics

One of the most essential and often overlooked components of a great pickleball court is its perimeter netting. On this project, Gappsi didn’t just install generic fencing.  We constructed a custom out-of-bounds netting system that surrounds the court, enhancing both safety and playability.

The perimeter fencing was constructed using pressure-treated lumber for the posts and top rail, providing strong structural integrity and resistance to rot, moisture, and insects. To maintain a polished and uniform appearance across the entire apartment complex, the wooden elements were stained with black paint, matching existing fences around the property.

After the framing was complete, the netting itself was installed.  This ensures that the balls remain within the playing area and reduces the potential for interference or hazards from errant shots. This netting also helps maintain a professional, enclosed feel that players appreciate, especially in a community setting.

Seamlessly Integrated with Apartment Complex Design: The Perfect Pickleball Court

One of the standout aspects of this Patchogue project was Gappsi’s ability to blend functionality with visual harmony. The finished court doesn’t feel like an afterthought or an addition — it looks like it was always meant to be there. By matching the stain color of the fencing to the rest of the complex and using professional-grade materials throughout, the court enhances the property’s overall curb appeal. It offers a valuable recreational feature for residents.

The Gappsi Difference: Craftsmanship Meets Creativity

At Gappsi, our goal is always to create outdoor spaces that exceed expectations. This pickleball court in Patchogue, NY, is a shining example of what happens when expert construction techniques meet creative design vision. Every element of the project, from the recycled concrete base to the color scheme and net system, was chosen to deliver exceptional quality, long-term value, and user satisfaction.

Whether you’re a developer looking to add recreational amenities to your property or a homeowner interested in building your private court, Gappsi brings decades of experience and innovation to every job.

Let us transform your outdoor living area with a Pickleball and Shuffleboard Sports Game Court. In recent years, the surge in popularity of backyard sports game courts has turned ordinary residential properties into dynamic hubs of recreation, fitness, and fun. A prime example of this transformation is the recently completed Pickleball and Shuffleboard Sports Game Court.  Located in Stony Brook, NY, expertly designed and installed by Gappsi. This court is not just a functional playing surface.  It’s a visual and recreational centerpiece that reflects the homeowners’ lifestyle and passion for outdoor activity.

The Vision Behind the Project – Pickleball and Shuffleboard Sports Game Court

The homeowners in Stony Brook wanted to enhance their backyard.  They integrated versatile sports game courts that could serve multiple generations of family and guests. Their vision was to have both a pickleball and shuffleboard court in a single, contiguous, and stylish layout.  This makes optimal use of their space while maintaining a cohesive and visually appealing design.

To bring this vision to life, Gappsi’s design and construction team collaborated closely with the homeowners.  Together, we choose the right materials, court colors, netting systems, and finishing details that would deliver both durability and aesthetic appeal. The result is a multi-sport area that effortlessly combines function with form, allowing for seamless play and visual harmony.

At the core of the court’s design are Mateflex sports tiles.  A premium modular tile system renowned for its superior surface performance, ease of maintenance, and attractive appearance. The Mateflex TopCourt style tiles were selected in a silver gray shade for the outer perimeter of the court. This neutral color frames the playing surfaces beautifully and offers a subtle contrast against the vibrant interior tile colors.

For the main play areas, Gappsi installed navy blue tiles.  A classic choice that enhances visual clarity and provides a rich, professional court aesthetic. These navy tiles were used for both the pickleball and shuffleboard courts, giving consistency across the multi-sport area. To further delineate specific play zones within the pickleball court, royal blue tiles were used for the “kitchen” or non-volley zone.  This is a critical component of any regulation of a pickleball court.

The courts were carefully measured and painted with regulation striping, ensuring compliance with standard game specifications. This attention to detail allows for both casual play and competitive matches.

Multi-Sport Game Court Netting System

To make the court as versatile as possible, Gappsi installed a Dominator multisport adjustable net system.  This enabled the court to be used for pickleball, badminton, and volleyball</strong>. The Dominator system is well-regarded in the industry for its robust construction, ease of height adjustment, and sleek, professional appearance.

pickleball-and-shuffleboard-sports-game-court1This feature dramatically increases the usability of the court. Families can easily switch from a fast-paced game of pickleball to a casual round of badminton or a fun volleyball match, all within the same area.

Finishing Touches: Turf Fringe and Retaining Wall Integration

Gappsi always considers the whole picture when designing and installing courts, and this project was no exception. To ensure a clean, polished look and to create a gentle transition between the court and its surrounding landscape, a synthetic turf fringe was installed along the outer perimeter</strong>.

This synthetic turf fringe not only enhances the aesthetics but also serves practical functions. It cushions the area around the court, reduces the transfer of mud and dirt onto the tiles, and creates a soft border between the court and the adjacent retaining wall</strong>. The turf fringe adds texture and color contrast, making the court visually appealing while enhancing its overall functionality and integration with the backyard.

Benefits of a Multi-Sport Backyard Court – Pickleball and Shuffleboard Sports Game Court

The Stony Brook project exemplifies the many benefits of having a multi-sport court installed at home. Here are just a few:
