Want a tennis court in your backyard, school, or club? The tennis courts designers at Gappsi can plan and construct highly functional and aesthetic tennis courts in Nassau and Suffolk County, Long Island, NY. Read on to learn how the construction would work.

What Is Tennis?

Tennis is played between two players in a singles game and four players in doubles. This game involves a racquet and a ball, and the two main roles are the serving player and the opponent.

The serving player hits the ball for a point, and the opponent receives the serve (which means hitting the ball in response). A toss decides which player will serve (hit the ball first) and from what side.

The Parts of a Tennis Court

Now, let’s get an overview of a tennis court.

  • A tennis court is a rectangular flat field divided into two parts by a net. One side is for the serving player, and the other is for the opponent. Players can’t touch the net or hit the ball on it during the game.
  • Sidelines are the two boundary lines on each side of the court perpendicular to the net. The inner boundary is for the singles games, and the outer boundary is for the doubles.
  • The parallel line at the furthest distance from each side of the net is the baseline. This is where a player stands to serve.
  • The thin line between the net and the baseline on each side is the service line. Players have to aim their serves into the area between the net and the service line.
  • The mark in the middle of the baseline is the center mark. The serving player has to stand on either side of the mark to serve.
  • The total service area is vertically divided into left and right sections through a line perpendicular to the net.

Gappsi has a phenomenal team of tennis courts designers that builds custom tennis courts in Nassau and Suffolk County. They work on different bases and finishes, like synthetic turf, asphalt, concrete, etc. Therefore, they can build a tennis court precisely according to your preferences.

Factors Affecting Tennis Courts Construction in Nassau and Suffolk County

The two main aspects of a tennis court construction are dimensions and surface. While the dimensions of a tennis court remain the same worldwide, the surface of tennis courts varies from region to region.

Dimensions – The Space You Need for a Tennis Court

The first step is to think about where you want to build the tennis court. The place should have enough room for both the tennis court and its outer zones.

The length of a tennis court is 78 feet. The width depends on the variant of the game; it is 27 feet if you play singles and extends to 36 feet with the alleys for doubles. Furthermore, a net attached to two posts at the height of 3 feet in the middle divides the tennis court into two halves.

A tennis court is only 36 x 78 feet, but you must also consider the outer zones. Hence, the distance from the baseline to the fence should be at least 21 feet, and the distance from the outermost sideline to the fence should be at least 12 feet.

Custom Tennis Court Installation
A tennis court designed by Gappsi

All in all, an area of 60 x 120 feet is ideal for a tennis court.

There are four main types of tennis court surfaces: grass, clay, hard court, and carpet. Although it may not seem like a big deal, the type and quality of a tennis court’s surface is a game-changer – it greatly impacts playing style.

Gappsi masters the tennis courts construction in Nassau and Suffolk County, Long Island, NY. The following are the most common types of tennis courts surface we offer:

Hard Court

This court has a layer of concrete or asphalt as the foundation. The tennis court installer then covers the foundation with several layers of acrylic and rubber mixture, giving it a smooth surface.

This base is ideal for fast matches because it facilitates constant bounce. The ball doesn’t lose its speed when it touches the ground. Hence, aggressive baselines and players with a powerful serve benefit the most from a hard court.

Grass Court

Grass for tennis court surfaces can be natural or synthetic. In recent times, tennis court contractors in Nassau and Suffolk County are increasingly replacing natural grass with synthetic grass.

The tennis game is the fastest on a grass court, and the speed of the ball depends on the grass length. The longer the grass is, the more the ball slows down. Moreover, the ball has a very flat bounce on the grass because the soft ground works like a cushion.

Since the game is fast on a grass court, strong serve players love it the most. Serve-and-volley players also find grass courts convenient.

Gappsi uses the highest quality synthetic turf in tennis court construction, making the game even better!

Clay Court

The game runs the slowest on a clay court because the ball digs deep into the clay when it falls on the ground before bouncing back. However, the ball’s bounce on the clay court is the highest, making it quite difficult for the opponent to return. This is also why the matches are quite longer on clay courts.

Baseline players good at hitting the ball with necessary topspin and playing powerful shots from the baseline find clay courts the most suitable. On the other hand, serve-and-volley players may find it difficult to play on such a surface.

Considerations for Pickleball Court Construction in Nassau & Suffolk Counties, NY

pickleball-sports-game-court

Pickleball has been growing in popularity for a few years now. It has more than 4.8 million players throughout the U.S., making it the fastest-growing sport in the country. This sport is so popular because it’s easy to play and oh-so-fun! Today, many Americans are looking into pickleball court construction so that they can add it to their backyard. Gappsi constructs all types of custom residential and commercial pickleball courts in Nassau & Suffolk Counties, NY!

Are you looking into building a pickleball court in your backyard? Do you wish to construct a pickleball court at your country club, school, or recreational center? If yes, this guide is for you. Let’s explore what goes into constructing pickleball courts in Nassau County and Suffolk County!

What Is Pickleball?

Pickleball is essentially a paddleball sport that is a mix of table tennis, tennis, and badminton. It started as a backyard creation in 1965 when a bunch of friends could not find a shuttlecock to play badminton. It involves two or four players who use solid wood paddles. They hit a polymer ball that has 26-40 round perforations, similar to a whiffle ball, over an affixed net.

Thanks to the popularity of pickleball in the U.S., Gappsi has ample experience in pickleball court construction in Nassau & Suffolk Counties. We provide our clients with several surfaces and base materials for pickleball courts, including synthetic turfs, bluestone dust, clay, and crushed marble dust. We design our pickleball courts to fulfill your goals.

Pickleball Court Construction Considerations

Now that you know what pickleball is, let’s explore some considerations for constructing a pickleball court!

How Much Room Will You Need for a Pickleball Court?

If you wish to add a pickleball court to your property, you must ensure you have enough room for seamless pickleball court construction. With that said, Gappsi has built pickleball courts in areas where the space was smaller than a regular court. Ideally, a pickleball court is supposed to be the same size as a doubles badminton court. An official pickleball court measures 20×44 feet. The same court is used for singles and doubles play.

Pickleball Court Contractor on long Island NYYou will also have to leave some room on the sides and ends of the playing field for running off the court after playing a ball. That is why the entire court should measure at least 24×54 feet. However, if you have ample space and want to play to the most athletic level possible, go for a pickleball court that measures 30×60 feet. Moreover, if you’re setting up the court indoors, leave at least 18-20 feet of height between the net and the light fixtures.

The net height of pickleball courts is 34 inches in the middle and 36 inches on the sidelines. The stripes on the court are similar to that on a tennis court. It features a 7-foot non-volley zone situated at the front of the net (known as the kitchen.) A pickleball court also has right and left service courts. At Gappsi, you can get a new court constructed for pickleball or have your existing badminton or tennis court converted. We can also alter your current basketball court into an asphalt pickleball court.

Property-Related Considerations

When choosing a location for your pickleball court, you must consider the property’s offset requirements. Note the property lines and specific town requirements. The distance from your neighbor’s property line is based on zoning laws you don’t want to break. The court orientation should be from north to south to account for the sunrise and sunset. Your pickleball court should also have a 1% slope to ensure proper court drainage. So, you will need to understand water flow on, under, and around the court. Based on the flow, you might require additional drain installation.

At Gappsi, we offer a thorough consultation before constructing pickleball courts in Nassau & Suffolk Counties. We will discuss your vision and court specifications to ensure optimal performance, aesthetic value, and durability. So, do you need an indoor or outdoor pickleball court? Our construction specialists will provide a seamlessly designed custom solution that works for your property.

Pickleball-Court-Contractor-on-long-Island-NYLighting

You will need lights if you plan to use the pickleball court for late-night matches with friends and family. Lighting for pickleball courts follows a standard format. All courts should feature two 1,500-watt light poles. Each of them should be 18-20 feet high and center-mounted, at least 2 feet back from the court. This lighting will be enough to help you enjoy an evening or nighttime game of pickleball.

Fencing for the Court Perimeter

Fencing is essential to pickleball court construction as it keeps the ball within the playing area. It also offers security to the players and spectators. You can choose from multiple fencing varieties. With that said, fencing made from durable wire is the most common. It allows everyone to see into and out of the playing area. Moreover, a wire fence enables light and air to pass through easily. We can guide you toward suitable fencing options for your pickleball court in Nassau & Suffolk Counties.

Net Considerations

At Gappsi, we will also discuss the net system that will work best for your court. The market has different types of pickleball poles and netting systems with varied characteristics. For instance, outdoor poles are designed to withstand outdoor elements. A complete outdoor pickleball net system features two poles, one outdoor net, sleeves, and one ratchet. We will discuss your requirements and guide you toward a net system that best suits your needs.

Setting Up Your Pickleball Court

Now that you know everything that goes into a pickleball court construction, we’d advise you to seek professional help for constructing one. Constructing Bocce Courts in Nassau & Suffolk County

Bocce-Ball-Sports-Courts-On-Long-Island-You-TubeBocce ball is a yard or lawn game played on bocce courts in the U.S. and worldwide. Perhaps the best part about this sport is that people of all ages and skillset can play it in their backyard. Gappsi has professional bocce courts designers who can construct custom bocce courts on your property in no time. Before we delve deeper into bocce court construction by our experienced contractors, let’s learn a bit about this ancient sport!

What Is Bocce?

Bocce is a sport one plays with eight weighted balls aimed at pallino or boccino, a tinier target ball. The goal of this sport is to score points by way of inching your ball closer to the pallino than your opponent’s ball. Bocce balls are larger and heavier than the balls used in croquet. That said, the significant rules of bocce have evolved over the years.

One of the best reasons to play bocce is that it’s a low-impact game. Anyone can play it, and it’s even wheelchair-accessible. Moreover, you can play it on various surfaces, and it’s pretty easy to learn. Today, bocce ball foundations and leagues track the game worldwide. It’s also one of the most widely enjoyed games in the world, most popular in Italy among retired Sicilians. There’s a bocce federation in the U.S. as well!

Bocce Ball History

Bocce ball is incredibly popular in Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, and Bosnia. It was first discovered through ancient Egyptian artwork from 5200 B.C., depicting boys playing an earlier version of the sport.

Bocce spread and reached Greece in about 600 B.C. Then, Italians picked it up. Today, people from all geographies enjoy playing bocce ball. The sport has also found traction in the U.S., especially among Italian migrants. Moreover, bocce ball has become a popular feature in Special Olympics.

Where Can You Play Bocce?

Bocce ball is played on various surfaces, including gravel, sand, grass, clay, and hard-packed dirt. You can employ our bocce courts designers’ services to create a bocce court on your grass lawn. The only requirement for a bocce court is that the surface should be level. However, if you want a professional-level court, our bocce court installer can create a regulation bocce court. We can use a level surface of grass, clay, sand, or your preferred material.

A campo or bocce court can be 75 feet long and 8 feet wide. It must be enclosed with boarded sides and ends, which are about 12 inches and 18 inches high. It ensures all the weighted balls remain in the court and can rebound from the side walls.

Bocce-Ball-Sports-Courts-On-Long-IslandA Regulation Bocce Court

You can hire Gappsi to build a regulation bocce ball court in Nassau & Suffolk County. Our bocce turf is designed to offer a top-tier, professional bocce experience. Additionally, it does not require any maintenance. We also provide our clients with customized engraved bocce balls.

Moreover, our regulation bocce courts feature two, putting green holes on either end. We can design a regulation court or a custom-sized one, depending on your preference. For instance, our bocce courts designers have experience installing regular courts that are 10 feet wide and 60 feet long. We can customize the size of the court based on your yard size.

Bocce Courts Designers Install Safe & Professional Turfs

Gappsi has years of experience as a supplier for sports game courts in Long Island, NY. When preparing our bocce courts, we ensure the surface reduces the risk of fall injuries. Our synthetic turns offer comfortable, high-performance, and safe artificial grass for bocce. We also use a rubberized underlay to lessen the impact of falls. If you want realistic synthetic turf on your court, Gappsi has the finest, highest-grade turf for its sports game courts.

When building a bocce court, you must be mindful of material, moisture, and grade. Gappsi uses synthetic turf, arguably the best material for bocce courts. Other materials used for these courts include crushed oyster shells, short grass, sand, and decomposed granite.

We design our courts to minimize bounce for easy play. Moreover, moisture can ruin the court surface. We use an appropriate drainage system to ensure the court remains as dry as possible. Lastly, our bocce courts designers install flat court surfaces for all projects. This way, the weighted balls or boccino don’t end up in the same corner and stay in place. We also add a high border to keep the balls within the court.

Engraved-Custom-Bocce-Balls-Gappsi-long-island-scaled-1Why Gappsi Uses Synthetic Grass for Its Bocce Courts

Are you wondering why our contractors use synthetic grass for bocce court surfaces? The truth is that synthetic grass turf cuts down on the maintenance and upkeep of the court. We construct our premium bocce courts with a recycled concrete base, 6×6 pressure-treated railroad ties, and top-quality synthetic turf.

Other court constructions replace the turf with 2 inches of bluestone dust, which requires regular maintenance. The bluestone rocks trap leaves, petals, dust, etc. It also requires annual respreading. However, our synthetic turn requires the bare minimum maintenance.

Even though this bocce court construction costs more than a typical court in Long Island, NY, it proves to be cost-effective. When debris like leaves falls on the court, you can clean it with a blower. Since the court surface does not require regular maintenance, it will not cost you a lot to maintain in the long run. Furthermore, since we installed the court on a concrete pad, the synthetic turf is playable throughout the seasons. It never requires raking or rolling.

That said, if you want our bocce court designers to use bluestone dust, clay, or crushed marble dust, we can use them to construct your court. We design all our bocce courts in Nassau & Suffolk County to satisfy our client’s needs.

Brick Pavers Basketball Sports Game Courts

Brick Pavers Basketball Sports Game Courts

Brick-Pavers-Basketball-Sports-Game-Courts2Brick Pavers Basketball Sports Game Courts are a great choice but not the only one when designing your space.  There are a number of factors that go into building a sports game courts: budget, local zoning laws, and your property design.

Common Sports Game Courts Materials

♦  Asphalt: The most affordable option for having a basketball sports game court is an asphalt pad with painted lines. The material costs are the least expensive as well as the installation due to cutting out the expense of having the court painted.

Some people have concerns about the durability of unpainted asphalt. It’s been our experience that as long as you don’t have large trees with big tree roots near the court you should be fine and will avoid the potential for big cracks. As for wear and tear, a sports game court will not experience the same traffic as your driveway so its longevity will be much longer than your standard driveway.

This is the best material for a driveway basketball court. It’s softer and more forgiving on the body than on other surfaces. For best results, install when the weather is warm and the ground is dry.

The court can be asphalt, and the edging can be brick pavers, beautifying the look of the court.

♦  Concrete: This surface can be slippery and not as soft, making it less desirable for competitive basketball use. In cold climates, the concrete can crack and heave, making it unsafe.  Concrete is a common driveway material, works for family-fun basketball, and lasts about 30 years.

Much like an asphalt pad, a concrete pad with painted lines is more affordable than one that’s painted due to cutting out the painting process.  The concrete looks nicer but the asphalt plays nicer.

♦  Hard-packed Gravel w/ Mateflex– Many towns, especially in the Northeast, have strict zoning laws that regulate the amount of non-permeable coverage your property can have. If your town will not allow you to have a non-permeable court, then a hard-packed gravel court with Sports Game Courts tiles may be your best and only option.

If you’re looking for aesthetics, sports game courts tiles look unbelievably beautiful.

Brick-Pavers-Basketball-Sports-Game-Courts3

Brick Pavers offer a smooth playing surface!

♦  Brick Pavers: Flat pavers can make for a smooth playing surface. They come in many colors and can be replaced if stained or broken. In addition, you can build basketball court lines, such as the free-throw line, right into the design by using different-colored pavers.  What we like about it the most is it compliments your property more than any other option. Not that the other options don’t. It’s just that a brick paver basketball sports game courts really looks nice, especially if you already have a paver patio.

What you get with this is a brick paver patio with the basketball court lines cut out and replaced with different colored bricks. The aesthetics of this are awesome. The athletics of it aren’t bad either.

◊  Maintenance: Basketball play should not result in any additional maintenance for the driveway, and the hoop structure should require little maintenance. If you see rust, remove it right away and check the warranty that came with your system. A quality system should last a lifetime.

◊  Permit: A permit is not typically required, but you should always check the rules in your area, as well as your homeowner’s association if you belong to one. People may think they can’t have a hoop because of their homeowner’s association.  But in many cases, they are allowed, or you can file for an exception. You almost always get one.

◊  Extras: Go beyond the hoop and driveway by adding some helpful extras. These are the most popular:

  • Stenciling kit: The kit includes a pattern and paint to add a 3-point line, free-throw line, lane, baseline, and more.
  • Pole pad: This cushion around the pole eases any collisions while playing and can be customized with vinyl lettering.
  • Lights: LED lamps to illuminate your driveway and allow you to play basketball at night.
  • Ball Containment: A net or fence stops the ball from going into the bushes, down a hill, over a fence, or into the neighbor’s yard.

Brick-Pavers-Basketball-Sports-Game-CourtsBrick Pavers Basketball Sports Game Courts in Elwood NY

Gappsi installed a basketball sports game court in Elwood located in Suffolk County NY. This sports game court was paved with Nicolock Stone Ridge Smooth in 3 color combinations. We used Autumn Blend for the field, Granite City Holland Stones for the 3-point line, as well as for striping. For the key, we used a Travertine color.

The non-skid, flat surface is optimal for basketball and is the choice of many players.  Permeable pavers bring the efforts of staying “green” all the way out to the curb! Being environmentally conscious doesn’t always mean sacrificing beauty! This inspiring and colorful blend brings the quality and standards of Gappsi.

We installed an out-of-bounce netting behind the basketball hoop too. The basketball hoop is adjustable regulation size with a LED light installed on the top. Definitely unique and has no need for paint. An extremely durable basketball sports game court with very happy clients.  This is the latest Gappsi sports game court creation.
