backyard-basketball-court-renovation-smithtown-nyIn our recent backyard basketball court renovation project in Smithtown, NY, we installed a MateFlex basketball court over an asphalt base. The basketball court was an existing asphalt court that needed many repairs. We re-leveled all the sunk and cracked areas using Patch Bond.  Patch bond for asphalt repair holes, cracks, and ruts in asphalt or concrete surfaces.

The entire basketball sports game court floor was rel-leveled and then Mateflex tiles were installed. Mateflex tiles are famous for sports flooring because they are durable, comfortable, and versatile. They are a superior choice among other sports game court tile options.

Why Choose Mateflex Sports Game Court Tiles

  • Comfort – Mateflex tiles have a leaf spring design that absorbs impact and reduces stress on joints and muscles. This allows players to play longer and harder with less stress on their legs and knees.
  • Durability – Mateflex tiles are made from high-grade, durable materials that are resistant to wear and tear. They can withstand a sustained load of 16,000 pounds per square foot.
  • Drainage – Mateflex tiles have a rib system that allows superior drainage, so courts can be used quickly after rain.
  • Versatility – Mateflex tiles can be used for indoor or outdoor courts and customized to fit any playing space.
  • Easy to install and maintain – Mateflex tiles are easy to install and maintain.

The basketball hoop was already there. As the customer requested, we added the Jordan logo imprinted onto the tiles.  You can add different colors to Mateflex sport court tiles to create custom patterns or boundaries:

  • Standard colors: Mateflex HomeCourt tiles come in 16 standard colors.
  • Custom logos and designs: You can paint custom logos and designs directly onto the tiles.
  • Multiple colors: You can select multiple colors to create custom patterns or boundaries.
  • Game lines: You can mask out game lines with tape, then apply a specialized primer and polyurethane paint.

backyard-basketball-court-renovation-smithtown-ny1Synthetic Turf and Putting Green

Behind the basketball hoop, there was an unused area. It used to be a big mulch bed that the customer had to take care of. We turned it into a small putting green area, and the client loved this idea.  We installed synthetic turf with a putting green, including three American flags and cups.

With a putting green composed of artificial grass, you can enjoy golfing with your family every day of the week.  If you’re an avid golfer or just considering adding a fun outdoor activity to your home, give Gappsi a call today!  With artificial turf instead of natural grass, the putting green is the exact right height and beautifully green every day of the year.

Putting Green Turf Terminology

To know what you are shopping for, spend the time to become acquainted with the specifications and terms used by the artificial turf industry.  Once you understand what each item means, you can hone in on which products would or wouldn’t work for your backyard putting green.  Even though there’s a bit of variety to artificial grass products, there’s not much variety in the base materials they’re made of.  There are three options:

  1. Polyethylene
  2. Polypropylene
  3. Nylon

Polyethylene is mainly used in the turf’s backing, not the yarn fibers. Fake grass for putting greens is usually made from polypropylene or nylon, and each has distinct advantages.  Nylon is the more durable (and more expensive) of the two.  Most of the best-putting green turf products will have nylon fibers.  Polypropylene more closely approximates the look and feel of real grass, though it’s more prone to matting and ruts than nylon is.

The silica sand infill absorbs some of the ball’s bounce, like soil.  Turf infill is those tiny bits of material sprinkling between the artificial grass blades. For example, if the edges are similar to blades of grass, then infill is the dirt for the turf. Adding silica sand infill helps your faux grass blades stand up and keep their real look in high-traffic areas. The silica sand infill also gives you the feel of walking on real grass by emulating the impact absorption qualities of soil. It helps weigh down the imitation turf and helps keep the artificial grass from getting wrinkles or ripples caused by movement. We add Microban, too.  Microban is an antimicrobial product that helps prevent the growth of mold and mildew. It’s non-toxic, so it’s also safe for kids and pets.

Synthetic Turf Grass Fringe

We used synthetic turf to frame the court and putting green area as a fringe. A fringe is a section of the fairway, sometimes called the “apron.” This apron connects the green and the fairway. Based on the design, synthetic turf fringe can be several feet wide and as narrow as six inches. Do you need it? I would say yes unless you want the ball to roll off the green.

We created a little sitting area on the opposite side with synthetic turf and installed out-of-bounce netting to prevent the basketball from entering the woods.

The clients are pleased. They made a lot of use of their minor sports game court. This is the latest sports game court built by Gappsi in Smithtown, NY.

Things to Consider While Buiding a Multi Sports Game Court

Building a multi-sports game court is not child’s play. It needs effort and investment. That’s why it’s important to consider the following factors while creating a multi-sports game court.

  • The type of surface that will suit your needs (such as asphalt, concrete, or synthetic turf)
  • The desired size of the court (whether it will be regulation size or smaller)
  • The location of the court, such as in a home, park, school, or community center.
  • The project’s budget ensures that you are considering all the costs.

By taking into account these factors, you can ensure that your multi-sports game court is safe, functional, and meets the needs of your community. Working with experienced professionals is also essential to ensure the completion of projects to high standards.

Backyard and Facility Multi-Sport Game Courts

At Gappsi, we have several solutions utilizing a variety of repair products to turn your old sports game court back into a state-of-the-art surface!  We built this multisport game court in Mount Sinai NY.  The Sports Game Court was built using Tiles by Mateflex installed over a recycled concrete base.

Gappsi offers a variety of sport game court options to choose from including resurfacing a regular single sports game court to a multi-sport game court.

One of the key strengths of sports game court tiles is their adaptability. They can be installed over various base materials, including concrete and asphalt, making them an ideal choice for facilities that host multiple sports. This versatility extends to both indoor and outdoor settings, accommodating sports like basketball, tennis, volleyball, and more. The ability to quickly convert and adapt these spaces is particularly beneficial for multi-purpose sports complexes.

Sport Game Court Striping

Synthetic Turf and Putting Greens

Our team at Gappsi completed part of the yard with synthetic turf and installed a putting green. Artificial golf greens provide a carefree, ready-to-play surface that rivals the practice greens at your local course. A synthetic putting green can be designed to any level of difficulty you desire. Practice uphill and downhill lies or the quirky break of a long putt.

Your putting green installation could be as big as your imagination or as small as you want. We find that golfers are happy with putting greens as small as 250 square feet. An artificial turf putting green and artificial turf lawn can free your weekends to work more with your putting and less with lawnmowing.

Features You Want For Your Synthetic Turf Putting Green

  • Choose a natural, bent-grass surface
  • Durable surfaces that provide years of beauty and play
  • Pick the speed of your green with your design consultant
  • Great drainage for always-ready playability
  • No fuss, no watering, and no pesticides or fertilizer
  • Environmentally friendly and 100% recyclable
  • Expertly designed and installed by the in-house, Gappsi staff

Fire Pit Feature Area

In addition to the sports game court and putting green our team sectioned off one corner for a fire pit.  We built a gravel bed filled with pea gravel for decoration.  Pea gravel can be used for a fire pit area because it’s comfortable to walk on, inexpensive, and provides a stable base for seating. Pea gravel is a small, smooth rock that’s often found in river beds. It can be surrounded by layers of pea gravel to create a heat-resistant base.

Bocce Ball Sports Game Courts with LED Lighting Sands Point NY

Bocce-Ball-Sports-Game-Courts-with-LED-Lighting-Sands-Point-NY2

Bocce Ball Sports Game Courts with LED Lighting will provide hours and hours of outdoor fun. Perfect for homeowners who like to throw parties outside.  Bocce court surfaces are traditionally made from tennis clay, however many homeowners prefer turf or sand for their yards. Courts can be built into your backyard as seen in the photo or built stand-alone. Call Gappsi today and we can prepare a free quote.

There are two primary considerations when addressing bocce ball court construction; one is the playing surface and the second is the lighting. Keep in mind that no matter how aesthetically pleasing a bocce court is, nor how expensive the drainage system is if it has an inferior surface it will get less use! Likewise, if you can not see at night the court it will also get less use.  A premium surface should play fast, have minimal bounce, and be easy to maintain.

Bocce Ball Sports Game Courts with LED Lighting

The game of bocce ball is very old. There is evidence that a bocce-like sport involving rolling rocks toward a target was even played by ancient Egyptians. The formal game known as bocce, or bocci, was subsequently developed in Italy and spread across the globe, becoming a popular game in many Western countries today. Bocce matches sometimes take place at night, and Gappsi has developed lighting packages for any level of competition.

When lighting a bocce court, many factors come into play. The light must cover the entire surface. The light must not shine into the eyes of the players. The fixtures must be durable to withstand an errant toss or unsteady player. Finally, the fixtures must be attractive so as not to detract from the daytime appearance of the court.

Bocce-Ball-Sports-Game-Courts-with-LED-Lighting-Sands-Point-NY1Why Light The Bocce Court?

Admit it or not, you might be wondering and having the question of why you should light the bocce court in your backyard. The straightforward answer is that it enhances its features at night. Aesthetically speaking, it would be a good view to look at after dark even if you’re not using it.

Furthermore, it ensures that it won’t be a nesting place for insects or small animals. And also ensure your safety from hazards and avoid accidents like missteps with the border of the bocce court when dark.

Bocce Ball Sports Game Court Sizes

The actual bocce court is a long rectangle filled with a non-bounce surface such as crushed oyster shell, clay, or gravel. Bocce sports game courts are generally constructed in one of three rectangle sizes:

  1. For competition-level bocce, courts are 13′ x 90′.
  2. A typical country or recreational club bocce ball court will be 13′ x 76′,
  3. The backyard bocce court will generally be between 10′-12′ wide and 12′-70′ long.

Whether you’re a country club manager with outdoor club-level bocce ball courts or a homeowner with a simple backyard bocce court setup, Gappsi has a bocce ball court lighting package for your sports game court.

bocce-court-built-by-Gappsi-in-smithtown-ny-1The Number Of Light Poles

If your bocce ball court is about 60 feet long, it may require 3 to 5 light poles along the edge of the court itself. The pole positioning has to be placed evenly to ensure that the lights to be installed would illuminate the same lighting from each other’s end of the court. This would also give ample allowance if in the future you plan to extend the court.

LED Light Pole Height

You have to ensure that the poles are identical to each other’s lengths/heights. The general height requirement for it is about 16 feet. The poles are typically made of wood, but others prefer metal poles. So, it is up to you which one to use as long as they’re the same height and installed properly.  The general height requirements give ample lighting when used and it won’t get in the way when tossing the ball when playing.

Why Use LED Lights?

It’s no secret that LED lights are energy and cost-efficient. But, at the same time, it is ideal to use LED lighting for the bocce court in your backyard so you to have the option of the color temperature. Bocce ball is a casual game and lighting is important when you’re playing in the late afternoon or at night. You don’t want bright lights to become a hindrance for a fun game—and too bright lighting would be harmful to the eyes up close—so warm lighting rather than bright sunlight white is more advisable.

LED lights are flicker-free compared to others so it won’t be irritating when they are used.

Bocce-Ball-Sports-Game-Courts-with-LED-Lighting-Sands-Point-NYBocce Ball Sports Game Courts With Stone Coping Sands Point NY

Gappsi designed and built this Bocce Court for a private residence in Sands Point NY. The sports game court was built over a recycled concrete base with a thin layer of blue stone screening. The structure of the wall was built with pressure-treated lumber and faced Azek on the inside and outside of the Bocce Ball Court. The floor for the court is the Gappsi bocce court synthetic turf and the coping on the walls is Indiana limestone. It was the customer’s design choice and selection. In addition, the limestone blends in with the Azek finish on the walls.

An led light system was installed under the coping. The night version is featured in the video. The led lights can be rotated to different colors or stopped on a desired color. This is the latest Gappsi Sports Game Court Built in Nassau County Long Island NY.
