Transforming a backyard into a luxury retreat takes vision, creativity, and expert craftsmanship.  This latest Gappsi project in East Setauket, NY, is a perfect example. The homeowners wanted a space that was beautiful, functional, and comfortable year-round. Gappsi designed and installed an entire backyard environment that blends modern features, elegant materials, and thoughtful outdoor living spaces. A Custom Vinyl Pool as the Centerpiece

The project began with the installation of a custom vinyl pool featuring concrete walls for exceptional durability and longevity. Measuring 16 feet by 36 feet, the pool offers ample space for swimming, relaxing, and entertaining. Its shape complements the backyard layout, providing space for the surrounding patio, sundeck, and additional landscape features.

A full-width sundeck at the shallow end provides a resort-style element. Gappsi installed two bubblers on the sundeck, creating a soothing, spa-like water feature that enhances the pool’s visual appeal and comfort.

Custom Vinyl Pool as the CenterpieceTo create a clean, elevated look around the perimeter, Gappsi used sandstone coping with rounded edges on the top and bottom. The coping was then sealed to match the porcelain patio, ensuring a cohesive, elegant finish throughout the space. This color-matching technique allowed the natural stone to blend beautifully with the rest of the design.

The entire patio surrounding the pool was installed using high-quality porcelain pavers selected from the Gappsi showroom. The pavilion floor is uniquely delineated with synthetic turf, creating a soft, visually distinct boundary between the shaded structure and the porcelain patio. Porcelain paver installation on the driveway in Smithtown, NY, is Gappsi’s latest project.  Porcelain pavers dominate the paver market with their unmatched resistance and easy maintenance.

Why are Porcelain Pavers so Good for Driveways?

Outdoor porcelain pavers are similar to indoor porcelain tiles, only thicker and more durable. They are frost-resistant, skid-resistant, stain-resistant, and easy to clean.  Porcelain pavers are highly resistant and virtually maintenance-free. This is due to their manufacturing process. They are made using a unique combination of materials: feldspar, kaolin, high-quality clay, quartzitic sand, and water.  These materials are mixed and heated to become indistinguishable. The material is left to dry.  Then, after adding pigments and patterns, it is cooked under extreme pressure and high temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Celsius.  Here is where the magic happens. The high temperatures cause the kaolin to undergo a process called vitrification. This process turns the kaolin into a fine glass surrounding the final porcelain material. This gives it incredible smoothness and resistance.  It makes porcelain a non-porous material that does not need to be sealed.  Aside from not requiring sealing, being a non-porous material makes porcelain pavers incredibly easy to maintain. That, combined with its high resistance, makes porcelain pavers a top choice.

This is Gappsi’s latest driveway installation for this residence in Smithtown, NY. We used Belgium pavers, which are 4×8 in size and made of split-faced and tumbled limestone. Our design used various colors, including black, gray, and silver. Our team also used the stone for the apron and the borders of the driveway.

The center-filled driveway utilized 6×12, 3-cm-thick porcelain pavers. These resemble the color of porphyry stones, our hard granite, but they are manufactured porcelain 3 cm thick. They are suitable for vehicle areas. The material is very durable and strong. They are one and a quarter inches thick, so you can drive over them with a car.

Porcelain Paver Installation Process

Proper installation is crucial to ensure their longevity and performance.

  1. Preparation: The first step is to prepare where the pavers will be installed. This involves excavating the existing surface and ensuring that it is appropriately leveled.
  2. Base: A stable base is critical for installing porcelain pavers. A layer of crushed stone or sand is a base material to provide stability, support, and proper drainage.
  3. Leveling: After laying the base material, it’s time to level it accurately using a compactor or hand tamper.
  4. Edging: Edging is necessary to prevent the pavers’ lateral movement over time. Depending on preference, plastic or metal edging can be used.
  5. Laying Porcelain Pavers: The last step involves laying porcelain pavers on top of the prepared surface and intermittently checking for leveling accuracy.

Then, we installed the porcelain over 2 inches of a dry pack mix, a combination of sand and cement leveled in a dry form. The pavers were installed over this layer, filling the joints with polymeric sand.

For this project, we are redesigning the driveway and front walkway. We replaced the driveway with porcelain pavers in sizes 8×8, 4×8, and 4×4. The porcelain pavers are finished to look like an old porphyry stone.  Porphyry stones are desirable for their durability, extreme pressure and chemical attack resistance, non-slip properties, and color variety. They are considered an extrusive equivalent to Granite and are among the safest building surfaces.

The new porcelain pavers will look very nice with this old-style home. It will be one of the few porcelain paver driveways installed on Long Island, NY, and the finished product will be very beautiful and impressive.

We utilized porcelain pavers that were two inches thick and porphyry in color. This porcelain has a rustic finish resembling a natural stone and is in three different size combinations: 8×8, 4×4, and 4×8, all two inches thick.

We utilized Belgian pavers selected from the Gappsi Natural Stone Collection for the border. The Belgian pavers are grayish limestone split-faced and tumbled. They are rich silver, and the borders are many shades of gray. We also outlined the edges of the steps and the risers. This stone combination fits perfectly with the house’s style and color.

Gappsi designed this freeform gunite swimming pool in East Northport NY. This is a very large swimming pool with a 9-foot deep end. In the shallow area, we built a sundeck with steps across in twelve-inch deep water. We used porcelain tiles, a very close combination of colors. Our team built a natural-looking waterfall at the deep end of the pool using moss rocks.  We made the moss rocks to also double as the diving rock. In addition, the shelf to the waterfall can be used as a diving board to jump into the pool. Around the pool area, we installed Blue Limestone on the patio in a French pattern and finished the pool is white quartz.

The pool coping is 12-inch by 2-inch thick limestone selected from the Gappsi Natural Stone Collection. The customer has a very large patio which includes a Breeo Fire Pit on one side of the yard. The Breeo Fire Pit is perfect for summer night fires while enjoying the view of the pool. This is the latest Gappsi backyard project in East Northport NY.
