Transforming a backyard into a luxurious outdoor living space requires thoughtful design, premium materials, and expert craftsmanship. Gappsi recently completed a stunning backyard installation in Long Beach, New York, featuring a custom gunite swimming pool, imported Italian porcelain patio, manufactured porcelain pool coping, an integrated spa, a sun deck, and a sleek outdoor shower. This project demonstrates how modern pool design and high-quality outdoor materials can create a sophisticated, functional, and inviting environment for homeowners.
Located in Long Beach, NY, this newly completed backyard combines contemporary aesthetics with practical outdoor living features. Every detail, from the pool construction to the porcelain patio installation, was carefully selected to create a cohesive and elegant outdoor space.
Custom Gunite Swimming Pool in Long Beach, NY
At the center of this backyard transformation is a beautifully constructed gunite swimming pool. Gunite pools are a popular choice for homeowners seeking a custom-designed swimming pool that can be tailored to the layout, dimensions, and architectural style of their property.
Unlike prefabricated pool options, gunite construction offers design flexibility. Homeowners can incorporate unique features such as integrated spas, tanning ledges, sun decks, and custom pool shapes to create a swimming environment that fits their lifestyle.
For this Long Beach, NY, backyard, Gappsi designed and constructed a pool that seamlessly integrates with the surrounding patio and outdoor living areas.
The pool includes an automatic pool cover, adding convenience and functionality. An automatic pool cover helps protect the pool when it is not in use and can improve heat retention and reduce water evaporation.
A built-in sun deck creates a shallow area where homeowners can relax, enjoy the water, and experience a resort-style atmosphere in their own backyard. The integrated spa provides another dimension to the outdoor experience, offering a dedicated space for relaxation.
Together, these features make the swimming pool more than just a place to swim. It becomes the centerpiece of an outdoor environment designed for comfort, entertainment, and enjoyment.
Italian Imported Porcelain Patio for a Modern Backyard
One of the most distinctive features of this Gappsi backyard installation is the expansive Italian-imported porcelain patio.
The entire backyard floor was finished with premium Italian porcelain pavers measuring three-quarters of an inch thick. These porcelain surfaces create a clean, contemporary appearance that complements the swimming pool and enhances the overall design.
Italian porcelain is widely appreciated in modern outdoor landscaping for its refined appearance, durability, and versatility. Available in a variety of colors, textures, and finishes, porcelain paving can replicate the look of natural stone while providing a consistent and sophisticated surface.

For this Long Beach project, the porcelain patio creates a unified outdoor floor throughout the backyard. The result is a seamless visual connection between the swimming pool, surrounding relaxation areas, and the outdoor shower.
The large patio surface also provides plenty of room for outdoor furniture, lounge chairs, and entertaining guests during the warmer months.
Porcelain Pavers Installed on Pedestals
A key element of this installation is the pedestal system beneath the porcelain patio.
The three-quarter-inch-thick Italian porcelain pavers were installed on adjustable pedestals with open drainage. This installation method allows water to drain through the joints between the pavers and into the space beneath the surface.
Unlike traditional paving installations that rely on mortar and grout, the pedestal-supported system does not require grout between the porcelain pavers. This creates several advantages for outdoor patio design.
First, the open joints allow water to move through the surface rather than collecting on top of the patio. Proper drainage is especially important in outdoor environments exposed to rain, pool water, and changing weather conditions.
Second, the pedestal system provides access to the space below the patio for maintenance. Depending on the installation configuration, you can lift individual pavers as needed.
Third, the system creates a clean, modern appearance with consistent spacing between the porcelain tiles.
For a contemporary backyard in Long Beach, NY, this porcelain pedestal installation is an excellent option for homeowners who want to combine aesthetics with practical drainage.
Two-Inch Manufactured Porcelain Pool Coping
The swimming pool is finished with two-inch manufactured porcelain coping that complements the surrounding Italian porcelain patio. Pool coping serves as the finishing edge around the swimming pool. It creates a transition between the pool structure and the surrounding deck while significantly contributing to the installation’s overall appearance.
.
In this project, the porcelain coping was selected to coordinate with the patio flooring, creating a unified design around the gunite swimming pool. The two-inch manufactured porcelain coping defines the pool perimeter while maintaining the backyard’s sleek, contemporary style.
Coordinating the pool coping with the patio material is an effective way to create a visually balanced outdoor space. Instead of introducing contrasting materials that can interrupt the design, the matching porcelain elements provide continuity.
This approach is particularly appealing for modern swimming pool projects where clean lines, minimal visual clutter, and consistent finishes are important design priorities.
Sleek Outdoor Shower with Powder-Coated Steel Fencing
Another standout feature of this Long Beach backyard is the custom outdoor shower constructed along the side of the house. Gappsi designed the outdoor shower using sleek, powder-coated steel fence sections. The steel components provide a contemporary architectural appearance that complements the modern swimming pool and porcelain patio.
Powder-coated steel is commonly used in outdoor applications because the coating provides a finished surface designed to withstand exposure to the elements. The material also offers a clean, streamlined look that works well with modern landscape designs.
The interior of the outdoor shower was tiled with porcelain tiles, extending the premium material selection throughout the backyard. The porcelain shower walls create a polished, cohesive appearance while providing a surface suited to a wet environment when installed with appropriate waterproofing and drainage.
An outdoor shower is a valuable addition to any swimming pool installation. It provides a convenient place to rinse off before entering the pool or after swimming, helping keep the pool water cleaner. It is also useful for rinsing off after spending time outdoors during the summer. By placing the shower along the side of the house, Gappsi added a practical feature without compromising the backyard’s open layout.
Creating a Complete Outdoor Living Environment
This Long Beach, NY, backyard project succeeds because its individual elements work together.
The gunite swimming pool provides the main recreational feature. The integrated spa and sun deck introduce additional opportunities for relaxation. The Italian porcelain patio creates a spacious and elegant outdoor floor, while the two-inch porcelain coping completes the pool perimeter.
The outdoor shower adds convenience, and the powder-coated steel sections introduce a modern architectural detail. Rather than treating each component as a separate feature, the design brings them together into one cohesive outdoor living environment.
This type of integrated approach is important when planning a backyard renovation or new swimming pool installation. Consider the materials, drainage systems, pool design, and surrounding landscape together to ensure the finished space is both attractive and functional.
For homeowners in Long Beach and throughout Long Island, investing in a thoughtfully designed backyard can significantly enhance the enjoyment of their property.
