Gunite Pool Construction Close To Home Backyard Design Sag Harbor NY

Sag-harbor-gunite-pool-construction-backyard-design1Thinking about adding a gunite pool construction close to home?  If you are installing a pool in your backyard, there are many types to choose from. As you research information on a potential new backyard swimming pool, you will often encounter the term “gunite.” Gunite swimming pools are popular because they are highly durable and they can be created in just about any shape.

Gunite is a concrete blend of sand, cement, and water that’s applied through a high-pressure hose. Once it dries, gunite becomes rock hard, forming a thick, solid structure. It is exceedingly durable, so swimming pools made of this substance are built to last.

Gunite Pool Construction Benefits

  • Built to Last: Concrete is durable and porous, allowing the plaster-coated shell to hold water, provide stability, and be replastered when needed, adding to its longevity.
  • Variety of Finishes: Various materials can be added to pool surfaces made of concrete or plaster, including tile, stone, and man-made textures.
  • Variety of Features: Attach waterfalls, custom steps, and so much more to the pool design.
  • Versatility: Gunite pools give you the ability to customize the shape of the pool. This is perfect for those wanting an extremely deep or large pool, or a pool with custom tanning ledges.

Gunite Pool Construction Backyard Design Sag Harbor NY

Our team at Gappsi designed and installed a gunite pool close to the home in Sag Harbor NY.  We built the patio with G044 Limestone and installed a sundeck in the shallow area of the pool.  The stairs within the pool design were free-formed to accommodate the backyard.  The sun deck and stairs were veneered with glass tiles.  The same glass tiles were used in the waterline of the pool.

Sag-harbor-gunite-pool-construction-backyard-design3What are the advantages of glass tiles?

The tiles reflect the light to give your pool the appearance of being brighter and larger. Glass tile is impervious to liquids and resistant to staining and discoloration, which means cleaning generally only requires a simple wipe down. If you dislike mold with a passion then this is a great choice for your bathroom or swimming pool.

Cooking Island Adds Functionality!

A cooking island was installed near the pool and home.  Included in the design was a Twin Eagles Grill, an outdoor refrigerator, and a built-in sink, the cooking island adds to the small backyard’s functionality. A wall with bricks was added at the edge of the property to accommodate the fence as well.  This was a very detailed project and the latest design from Gappsi in Sag Harbor NY.

Why Have Your Pool Close To Your Home?

The problem is that people don’t anticipate exactly how they will eventually use their pool, and weigh that properly against other factors.  Here are five reasons you might want to keep your pool close at hand.

Space:  In this home located in Sag Harbor, space was why the pool was installed close to the home.  Not everyone has the luxury of a large backyard, in many cases, placing the pool close to the house is the only option. However, even when you have some area to work with, keeping the pool tucked into a corner close to the house might be the most efficient use of space. Why not save the rest of your yard for other activities?

Convenience:  You’re going to be making many trips to and from your pool.  About half of them, you’re going to be dripping wet. It’s hard to overstate how handy it is for swimmers to have easy access to a shower and toilet. If you plan to entertain, or just eat meals on your pool patio, it’s also convenient to have the kitchen close by.  Another convenience is having a garage or other storage area nearby helping make pool maintenance a bit easier.

Aesthetics:  A pool is more than just a recreational area. When thoughtfully designed, it’s also great eye candy for your property. Keeping the pool close to the house allows you to enjoy the scenery more – which is especially nice in warmer climates where you can keep your pool open most or all of the year. Many people also love the sound of water, and incorporate things like waterfalls to produce perfectly tranquil background noise for their home.

Privacy:  In many cases, a simple fence doesn’t provide the sort of privacy people want for their swimming pool. Trees, shrubs, and other plants are needed to fill in the gaps. However, this is much less of an issue when the pool is close to the house, which serves as the ultimate view-blocker.

Safety:  While safety comes last on the list, it’s a primary concern for parents of young children who are thinking about building an inground pool. Having the swimming pool right outside your door makes it much easier to see and hear everything that goes on in it. Just as important, it allows you to get to the scene quicker if an accident happens. When it comes to pool safety, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second counts.

Gunite Swimming Pool Renovation

Gunite-Swimming-Pool-Renovation2

If you’ve been enjoying your pool for several years but want to update the look or add new features, then a gunite swimming pool renovation might be just what your pool needs. At Gappsi, we have a team dedicated specifically to commercial and residential pool needs.  The versatility of a Gunite pool makes it a top choice for homeowners who wish to truly “design” their own swimming pool. Gunite is a mixture of cement and sand sprayed onto contoured and supported surfaces used in the construction of in-ground swimming pools.

How do you know when your pool needs to be resurfaced? Below are the signs to look out for:

  • Your pool has stains and the walls are dirty.
  • The surface of your pool has developed bumps and is rough.
  • There are fissures and cracks along your pool walls.
  • Your pool water level continually drops.

Now there are temporary solutions such as water-proof paint along with acid washes for stains, but these are the equivalent of putting Band-Aids on the problem. It’s more cost-effective to hire a professional to replaster your pool and have it done correctly the first time.

Gunite offers the maximum strength that can currently be found in the swimming pool construction industry.  These materials allow for a more “elevated” level of custom pool design options.  Gunite is a pneumatically applied concrete mixture reinforced with steel rebar.  This is the most effective way of creating a swimming pool from concrete. Gunite is superior to alternative pool construction techniques such as vinyl liner or fiberglass pools in terms of structural strength and design options. It is also a porous concrete mixture that allows for better expansion/contraction tolerance and is less prone to cracking, shifting, translating, or sinking.

Is a gunite pool a good investment?

There are plenty of pros of gunite pools to be aware of. First, they last a long time and don’t take much time, effort, or money to maintain. That fact is the reason why lots of people see gunite pools as being a good investment is because of less future costs.  The life expectancy of a gunite pool depends on the construction.

A poorly built gunite pool certainly has the potential to crack, but a properly built pool can and should last for 100 years or more, with no risk of cracking whatsoever. We’ve been building Gunite pools for more than 30 years and our customers are very satisfied.

Gunite-Swimming-Pool-Renovation1What is the difference between replastering and resurfacing a pool?

Replastering is typically done when the existing plaster has become rough, cracked, or stained. Resurfacing, on the other hand, involves adding a new layer of material on top of the existing pool surface. This can include plaster, aggregate, or tile.  Most often gunite pools need to be resurfaced when stains are inevitable. Often, they are not anything serious, but they can build up and take away the beauty of your pool. Stains usually come from algae, leaves, debris, and chemical, and mineral outputs. If you are unable to clean the stains off then pool resurfacing will do the trick.  The best way to know if it’s time to resurface a pool is to be proactive, observing it constantly so that you’ll notice signs that it’s time to resurface. Mineral stains, gunite exposure, or plaster that’s flaking or falling off are all signs that your pool is in need of work.

Many pool owners ask: “How often do you need to replaster a pool?” on average, a pool needs to be replastered every ten years or so. However, there are several factors that could cause this maintenance to come sooner or last longer.

Can you reshape a gunite pool?

If you’re looking to change the shape of a gunite pool, a significant amount of excavation work is needed. Moreover, multiple areas would need to be excavated and then refilled for this process. In some instances, this process could be costly.

Gunite-Swimming-Pool-RenovationWhy use gunite instead of concrete?

To improve the strength and ductility of poured concrete, it is usually incorporated with wire mesh but sprayed concrete can be combined with steel fiber to increase this. Gunite and shotcrete are typically less expensive than poured concrete.  Shotcrete, “concrete”, and gunite are all basically the same product with variations in strength, inherent water-tightness, and methods of construction.

Gunite Swimming Pool Advantages

  • Gunite is cheaper than shotcrete
  • When applying Gunite you can stop and start the application without creating any weak points
  • Super high strength with low shrinkage
  • You can walk on the wet concrete without disturbing it
  • Gunite is easier to clean up than shotcrete

Gunite Swimming Pool Built in Massapequa, NY by Gappsi.

Gunite Swimming Pool Built in Massapequa, NY by Gappsi. This Gunite swimming pool was built by Gappsi in Massapequa, south of Montauk Highway. Due to the high water table and to avoid dewatering the pool was built with a 6 ft deep end and also raised 8 inches high above one section of the patio.
The Gunite shell incorporates a cage of Rebars 12 inches on center and 8 inches Gunite floor and 10 inches walls. The pool size is 16×32 and built within the pool are stadium stairs across shallow end 16 ft wide, and in the opposite side a 16 feet 18 inch wide bench across the deep end to allow more sitting in the pool.
Beige quartz tiles were installed along the pool wall at water line. The pool plaster consisted of cappuccino quartzscapes
Quartz dust is much harder then Marbledust thus making the pool finish last 3 times as long as any Marbledust. At Gappsi we prefer utilizing quality finish and durable materials to provide our customers with long lasting and worry free Gunite swimming pools.
This pool also incorporates a beige autocoder that opens and closes in 30 seconds to the touch of a button. It is an energy saving, chemical free and low maintenance swimming pool. In this particular backyard with limited space the installation of a fence would have not been possible and would have made the pool and backyard patio two separate areas creating a less functional and esthetically unpleasing backyard.
The pool wall also incorporates a raised wall section above the pool coping with 3 sheer descends for a water cascading water feature. Fiorito travertine coping, pavers, and wall veneers were used throughout the backyard walls and patios. This stone is an exclusive natural stone product from the Gappsi stone collection. The pool equipment used was made by Hayward including the Hominologic control panel veritable speed pump, cartridge filter, salt chlorine generator, and ozone3 purification system . All plumbing consisted of 2 inches hard pvc pipes with 2 skimmers 3 jet returns and dual bottom drain.
The lighting package consisted of 3 led low voltage lights.
