Gunite Swimming Pool Renovation

Gunite-Swimming-Pool-Renovation2

If you’ve been enjoying your pool for several years but want to update the look or add new features, then a gunite swimming pool renovation might be just what your pool needs. At Gappsi, we have a team dedicated specifically to commercial and residential pool needs.  The versatility of a Gunite pool makes it a top choice for homeowners who wish to truly “design” their own swimming pool. Gunite is a mixture of cement and sand sprayed onto contoured and supported surfaces used in the construction of in-ground swimming pools.

How do you know when your pool needs to be resurfaced? Below are the signs to look out for:

  • Your pool has stains and the walls are dirty.
  • The surface of your pool has developed bumps and is rough.
  • There are fissures and cracks along your pool walls.
  • Your pool water level continually drops.

Now there are temporary solutions such as water-proof paint along with acid washes for stains, but these are the equivalent of putting Band-Aids on the problem. It’s more cost-effective to hire a professional to replaster your pool and have it done correctly the first time.

Gunite offers the maximum strength that can currently be found in the swimming pool construction industry.  These materials allow for a more “elevated” level of custom pool design options.  Gunite is a pneumatically applied concrete mixture reinforced with steel rebar.  This is the most effective way of creating a swimming pool from concrete. Gunite is superior to alternative pool construction techniques such as vinyl liner or fiberglass pools in terms of structural strength and design options. It is also a porous concrete mixture that allows for better expansion/contraction tolerance and is less prone to cracking, shifting, translating, or sinking.

Is a gunite pool a good investment?

There are plenty of pros of gunite pools to be aware of. First, they last a long time and don’t take much time, effort, or money to maintain. That fact is the reason why lots of people see gunite pools as being a good investment is because of less future costs.  The life expectancy of a gunite pool depends on the construction.

A poorly built gunite pool certainly has the potential to crack, but a properly built pool can and should last for 100 years or more, with no risk of cracking whatsoever. We’ve been building Gunite pools for more than 30 years and our customers are very satisfied.

Gunite-Swimming-Pool-Renovation1What is the difference between replastering and resurfacing a pool?

Replastering is typically done when the existing plaster has become rough, cracked, or stained. Resurfacing, on the other hand, involves adding a new layer of material on top of the existing pool surface. This can include plaster, aggregate, or tile.  Most often gunite pools need to be resurfaced when stains are inevitable. Often, they are not anything serious, but they can build up and take away the beauty of your pool. Stains usually come from algae, leaves, debris, and chemical, and mineral outputs. If you are unable to clean the stains off then pool resurfacing will do the trick.  The best way to know if it’s time to resurface a pool is to be proactive, observing it constantly so that you’ll notice signs that it’s time to resurface. Mineral stains, gunite exposure, or plaster that’s flaking or falling off are all signs that your pool is in need of work.

Many pool owners ask: “How often do you need to replaster a pool?” on average, a pool needs to be replastered every ten years or so. However, there are several factors that could cause this maintenance to come sooner or last longer.

Can you reshape a gunite pool?

If you’re looking to change the shape of a gunite pool, a significant amount of excavation work is needed. Moreover, multiple areas would need to be excavated and then refilled for this process. In some instances, this process could be costly.

Gunite-Swimming-Pool-RenovationWhy use gunite instead of concrete?

To improve the strength and ductility of poured concrete, it is usually incorporated with wire mesh but sprayed concrete can be combined with steel fiber to increase this. Gunite and shotcrete are typically less expensive than poured concrete.  Shotcrete, “concrete”, and gunite are all basically the same product with variations in strength, inherent water-tightness, and methods of construction.

Gunite Swimming Pool Advantages

  • Gunite is cheaper than shotcrete
  • When applying Gunite you can stop and start the application without creating any weak points
  • Super high strength with low shrinkage
  • You can walk on the wet concrete without disturbing it
  • Gunite is easier to clean up than shotcrete

Gunite Pool Renovations, Refinishing, and Remodeling

Gunite-Pool-Renovations,-Refinishing,-and-Remodeling2

Gunite pool renovations, refinishing, and remodeling may be just what you need if your swimming pool has begun to start showing signs of age. Is the tile cracked or has the plaster become rough to the touch?  Even if you upkeep your pool every season, it still encounters regular wear and tear from use over the summer months. We’re happy that your house is where everyone gathers for parties and swimming a few laps, and we can help you restore your pool to look just like new.

Gunite pools are by far the most valuable and durable type of pool, making them the best choice for longevity.  Gunite pools are made by spraying a mixture of concrete and sand mixture into a rebar framework.

Durability Of Gunite Pools

Gunite pools offer the most flexibility and creative control, as well as the best durability. Due to the steel framework, gunite pools will retain their shape over a long period of time. A smooth finish is applied at the end of the process to eliminate or reduce the rough feeling one might experience from the gunite. The most common finish is plaster, which is a mixture of cement and marble sand, but other options are available such as a tiled finish, concrete paint, or even pebble surfaces.

Gappsi Pools and Spas can restore the gunite in your inground pool to the same smooth condition it was on the day of installation. Whether there are rough patches or cracks in the walls of your inground pool or the coloring just looks dull, we can fix and restore your existing pool.

Gunite Pool Renovations Consider These Upgrades

Are you looking to have your pool renovated?  There are many options to improve the looks and efficiency of your existing swimming pool. In the last 10 years alone, more than a dozen new developments have made swimming pool ownership more enjoyable, less expensive, as well as easier than ever.

We renovate and retrofit existing pools with the latest features, standing behind our finished work. Here are some ideas to consider when looking at a renovation project.

  • Add an in-ground spa
  • Water features – waterfalls, infinity edge, waterfalls, beach entry, tanning ledge, benches, and steps
  • Energy-efficient equipment
  • Resistance swim jets or a swim lane
  • Children’s play area
  • Custom mosaic tile, new coping and other finishing touches
  • Upgraded Plaster Finish
  • Replace a fiberglass or vinyl pool with a gunite swimming pool
  • New Decking
  • Re-shaping the gunite structure
  • Re-plumbing

Pool renovations can be a simple facelift, or it can be a whole lot more. Just need to replace the plaster? No problem. Ready to add some exciting new features? We can do that too.

Pool Interior Re-Plaster / Refinishing

If the interior finish of the pool is looking worn, it’s probably because you have a plaster or Marcite finish. These finishes were common 15 years ago, but they’ve been completely replaced in the last few years by the new long-lasting and beautifully colored aggregate finishes. These new finishes last 2 to 10 times longer than the old Marcite finishes, and with different colored and sized pebbles or aggregates, we can create any color and texture you want. Some people like the feel of the regular pebble finish. Others like the extra smoothness of polished marble or quartz aggregate finishes. Either way, you’ll get a new pool interior that is prettier and much longer-lasting than ever before.

Tile Repair And Replacement

Tile lifting and cracks in tile or cement are commonly just “patched or replaced” by inexperienced pool contractors. But this is a mistake. A crack is a sign of a construction defect such as faulty material, faulty application, or the absence of proper control joints. No matter the cause it must be diagnosed and corrected at the source. Otherwise, the problems will continue to haunt you for years to come.

Travertine Pool Coping And Spillover Gunite Spa

Travertine-Pool-Coping-And-Spillover-Gunite-SpaWhat Is Travertine Pool Coping & Spillover Gunite Spa?

Travertine is a natural stone that is harvested from quarries in Europe and Asia. This material is widely used for making tiles and pavers for interior and exterior floorings. They are used to make pool copings, too. Did you know that Travertine pool coping remains one of the finest choices in the market for enhancing the look and functionality of the pool area?

Travertine is available in different textures, shapes, and colors, giving homeowners the flexibility to create unique pool copings. If the pool is rectangular, our designers may recommend using travertine drop face pavers. But if your pool is round and curvy, then travertine bullnose pavers may be more appropriate.  Travertine is ready for use in a variety of sizes, finishes, and styles, including roman walnut, coral-stone, ivory, ivory swirl, tumbled bullnose, silver, and other finishes that make your pool area look genuinely outstanding.

Does Travertine Make A Good Pool Coping?

Travertine pool coping remains one of the finest choices in the market for enhancing the look and functionality of the pool area.

Tumbled and honed pavers are often the choice for travertine pool coping because they are rough yet not too harsh on the skin. They also make the surface safer even when wet because they offer friction. This means that you can walk barefoot on wet coping without fear of slipping. Travertine is an ideal material for pool coping for a couple of reasons. The first reason is this stone is cooler to the touch when compared to other stones. The second reason is it offers a high level of slip-resistance, making it safer for wet feet of all ages.

You will often see travertine coping in hotels and resorts because of their enduring beauty and grandeur. Why not bring the same luxuriousness to your home’s outdoor area? Gappsi offers high-quality travertine pavers at great prices.

Give Your Pool A Unique Look With Travertine Pavers

Natural stone pavers are commonly installed in pool areas of luxurious homes because of their beauty and their practicality. Travertine pavers are particularly popular. They are available in a variety of colors and shapes, offering design flexibility. There’s something about a travertine pool deck that is understatedly elegant. Aside from its enduring beauty, travertine also offers many other benefits.

Since this natural stone absorbs water, it keeps the pool area safe. Accidents like slipping can be minimized.  Travertine pavers can keep themselves cool even when they are exposed to heat.  In fact, they are 20% cooler than concrete pavers and other natural stones.

Travertine, like marble, is durable and strong. With proper care, its color and slip resistance capability will remain the same for a long time, thus preserving the elegance and safety of your pool area.

Compare Marble To Travertine & Travertine Wins For Being Less Expensive To Buy & Maintain!

The key to keeping your travertine pavers in excellent condition is proper and regular care. Clean the deck at least once a year using a pressure washer. You can also scrub the pavers with a brush. However, avoid using harmful cleaners that can damage the integrity of the natural stone.  Gappsi offers Cleaning and Sealing services for Paving Stone Patios, Driveways, and Retaining Walls.

Travertine-Pool-Coping-And-Spillover-Gunite-Spa1Are You Considering Adding A Spa To An Existing Inground Swimming Pool?

Even if your pool’s already in the ground, you can add a spa to it. Are you thinking of adding a spillover spa that will be an add-on to your existing pool? Its outer edge will at least be partly in the pool, which is why it’s called a spillover.  The water from your spa might flow into your pool as people get in and out of it.

The spillover spa looks clean and fits right into your existing pool design. Alternatively, you might consider installing an in-ground spa separate from your pool. This option can be designed to blend into the natural landscape with rocks, plants, and trees.

You might prefer a naturalistic, standalone spa, but keep in mind that it may end up costing more than the spillover spa.

The Spillover Gunite Spa is the Easier Option

Your spillover spa will be built into your existing pool. That means you won’t need to buy a second pump to keep your spa clean. Instead, both it and the pool can run on the same pump, saving you money and time on spa maintenance.

Cost isn’t the only thing that makes a spillover spa more appealing. Many people who have installed a spillover spa love the convenience of it. They can jump from the warm waters to the cool waters for a refreshing dip that segues into a relaxing float.

With a spillover spa, you get all of the benefits of having a hot tub, too. It helps you relax and relieve stress and adds value to your property. Why wouldn’t potential buyers want to have a pool-and-spa combo in their backyard?

Finally, a spillover spa looks excellent, too. It’s a streamlined addition to your pool, and it makes the setup appear that much more luxurious. You, your family, and your guests will love using it for years to come.

Travertine Coping And Spillover Gunite Spa In Yaphank NY

Gappsi’s latest home improvement was in Suffolk County Long Island in Yaphank.  The spa was built in gunite and the pool was built using a vinyl liner. We installed an automated control for the heat.  The homeowner can even control the flow of the spa from an iPhone or a smartphone. HOW COOL!  The spa was built between the pool and the pavilion. The homeowner can use the spa and also friends can see from the pavilion creating a congregating area between the spa and the pavilion sitting area. We installed stools wrapped with the liner on one side. Steps to get into the pool. And the pool is a gradual slope with a straight wall that goes from 45 inches in the shallow area to 66 inches in the deep end.

Gunite-Pool-Renovation-And-CopingMarble Pavers Pool Copings In Brookville NY

This is a gunite renovation completed on Long Island in Brookville NY. Gappsi installed new glass tiles in the waterline to freshen up the look of the pool.

Waterfalls, water walls, fountains, jets, bubblers, and spillovers give your pool a focal point, and they create an inspirational setting. A great pool design is often realized by the water within; its appearance, reflections, and how it refracts light and color. By adding a vertical element of moving water, the design can spring to life and almost become a work of art. There are many types of water features to choose from.  Simply put, today’s pool builders create customized features that move water in astonishing ways.

For our customer in Nassau County, we built a wall for the water feature to include sheer descends and on each end, we added spillover bowls.  Along the side of the pool we installed 6 Laminars; 3 on each side.

Sheer-descent waterfalls

Sheer-descent waterfalls, also called sheetfalls, are more suited for modern and geometric pools. The water flows through a thin spillway creating a sleek elegant look as it descends into the water. Sheetfalls are often installed along a raised wall on one side of the pool. The wall can be finished in glass tile for a stunning effect or stacked stone for a more natural look.

Laminar Fountains

Laminar fountains are a type of deck jet that produces a bubble-free arc of water.  This water feature is more common on modern pools and often lit by colorful LED lights.   This water feature look is both stunning and exciting. Designers should pay attention to windy areas because too much wind may ruin the effect on the laminar fountains. Laminar fountains are more expensive than standard deck jets.

Gunite-Pool-Renovation-And-Coping2Gappsi Stone Collection | Marble G043

In general construction terminology, coping refers to masonry material that is used to cap the top of a wall. Most walls have some type of coping, and the kind that adorns those on gunite pools features specific elements.

Coping is the material—usually natural stone or various forms of concrete—mounted over the top of the pool shell’s “bond beam” (the upper portion of the wall). This is where the pool structure meets the surrounding deck

For the coping in the patio, we used marble G043 selected from the Gappsi Stone Collection. The benches and steps in the pool were outlined with glass tiles that were used in the pool for the waterline. For the wall water feature, we used very unique marble slabs to elevate the look and make it a dramatic focal point of the pool and backyard. The patterns in the stones add to the natural beauty of the backyard through the natural patterns in the stones.

Travertine Patios And Pools On Long Island

Travertine Patios And Pools On Long Island

Travertine Patios And Pools On Long IslandGappsi designed and completed the landscaping and Travertine Patios And Pools On Long Island recently in a home located in Yaphank, NY.  Gappsi installed a freeform vinyl pool with a gunite spa spilling into the pool. Three structures were built including a gazebo, a pavilion, and a pergola; since the property is surrounded by woods populated by deer we decided to screen the gazebo for bugs also.

Backyard Gunite Spa with G035 Travertine Pavers

The home’s backyard was built on two levels so Gappsi utilized natural stone borders to retain the hearth and create a more natural look as well. The freeform vinyl pool is 18 x36, with the deepest part of the pool only 5 1/2 feet. There is a gradual slope on the bottom with the walls being straight down. The stairs that were installed are in the shallow area and we added 3 built-in stools in the pool to sit and relax poolside.

The spa that was added is a gunite spa finished with super blue diamond brights. This pavilion was built to add a shaded area while relaxing near the pool with a pergola for a lounge chair. The patio was paved with G035 travertine selected from the Gappsi stone collection and the veneer on the spa is also G035 travertine. The entire backyard has a very beautiful setting and layout.  The homeowners will enjoy the backyard for many many years to come along with all the family members.

Why Consider a Travertine Pool Deck?

One of the best reasons to consider these pavers is purely aesthetic. They provide a unique look that, when compared with other pavers, makes your patio or pool deck stand out amongst others in your neighborhood! An essential part of buying a pool is thinking about the best pool deck for your family. Travertine tile pool patios are increasingly popular because they are slip, heat, and mold resistant.  Travertine is a natural form of sedimentary limestone. It develops around natural spring mineral deposits, leading to distinctive swirls throughout the limestone. Due to the travertine tiles’ layered, mottled texture and beauty, the ancient Romans favored it as a building material.

Travertine-Patios-And-Pools-On-Long-Island3

Travertine pavers are ideal because they stay cool to the touch; Perfect for Barefoot-in!.

Simply by designing the yard with travertine pool pavers the customer increased the safety of their pool area by providing a stable, slip-resistant surface. The porous stones are naturally rough and even more so when they are wet making the surface slip-resistant.

Use Travertine Paving Stones in the following places:

  • pool decks
  • patios
  • decorative walls
  • stairs
  • fireplaces
  • driveway

Benefits of Travertine Patios And Pools On Long Island

Travertine is eco-friendly
All travertine stones are eco-friendly as they adopt an environment-friendly manufacturing process as opposed to marble. In addition, this stone is super low maintenance; they stay intact much longer, thus avoiding the need to replace them regularly.

Extremely durable
Due to Travertiens’s ability to withstand heat and extreme temperatures, travertine pool pavers are known to be extremely durable, thus making them ideal for all outdoor projects.  For example driveways, walkways, patios, and pools; enjoy your barbeques and parties.

Water Absorbency
Concrete pavers do absorb some water where tiles do not, and neither does flagstone. Since water is constantly present around a swimming pool, especially if it is heavily used by children choosing travertine pavers is smart because it absorbs more water than other paving materials.

Non-Fading
Better paving materials today are fade resistant, but in the face of the sun, over the years even pavers do lose some color. Travertine pool decks are natural stones whose color is permanent versus dyes that are long-lasting or fade-resistant.

No Efflorescence
What is that? Efflorescence is a powdery white deposit that’s commonly seen on concrete surfaces and requires cleaning to remove it.

Travertine-Patios-And-Pools-On-Long-Island2

While this isn’t part of our list above of reasons for suggesting travertine for patios and pools the fact is that it is hugely popular. This isn’t a fad or trend; it’s been in big demand for patios and pool decks for several years now, and instead of showing signs of losing favor as a trend does, the requests for travertine paving in the backyard continue to grow.

Are You Ready To Level Up Your Yard?

When looking to remodel your pool deck, having a selection of colors and sizes to choose from makes the process all the more enjoyable. At Gappsi you can select from an array of travertine deck pavers’ colors, sizes, designs, and patterns. No matter your taste, finding the right paver for your style is simple!

Work With a Contractor For Maintaining Your Travertine Pool Deck

Although travertine tiles are water-resistant, they may gradually appear stained. Further, if your travertine pool deck is close to loose soil, dirt can become trapped in the natural pores.

Fortunately, you can easily prevent this by sealing your deck every three to five years. Although you’re not required to seal your deck, you’ll be grateful that you did so a few years down the road.  Your pool contractor can replace damaged tiles or may recommend a cleaning and sealing of your pool’s patio.

If you clean your travertine tiles on a regular basis, you shouldn’t need much help from a contractor to repair or replace them.

Gunite Pool Resurfacing Long Island

GUNITE POOL RESURFACING LONG ISLAND

Gunite-Pool-Renovation

Gappsi specializes in Gunite Pool Resurfacing on Long Island

Did you know that your gunite pool needs to be renovated just like your roof or your driveway?  Just as time takes its toll on your home’s roof, fence, and wood deck so does your inground swimming pool and it may be time for a resurfacing.

Over time wear and tear on a pool is unavoidable, this occurs because the pool is exposed to freezing temperatures, and the thawing cycles combined with pressurized water and disinfecting chemicals year after year.

We receive many questions from customers about their aging gunite swimming pools and how to preserve them so they last longer.  Some questions we receive and you may have also are:

  1. What are some options to give my older pool new life?
  2. What are the signs I should look out for to know if my pool needs resurfacing?
  3. How much does it cost for a Gunite Pool Resurfacing?
  4. If I need to resurface my pool, how long will it take?
  5. In many cases, gunite pool resurfacing can do wonders for your aging pool and bring it back to life. That said, here are some signs resurfacing your gunite pool is well overdue.

To answer all your questions it is best to schedule an appointment with Gappsi in order to provide ideas and options for your gunite pool resurfacing.

TOP 3 SIGNS Gunite Pool Resurfacing Is Needed

  1. Leaks – How well is your pool holding water? You may have a worn-out or damaged pool surface leaking water.  Much like a deteriorating surface, pool leaks will only get worse if not corrected.
  2. Stains – Stains come in all shapes, sizes, and colors.
    • Chemical and mineral inputs
    • Leaves and other natural debris
    • Algae (red or green)
  3. Texture – How does your pool surface feel? If the gunite pool feels rougher or if the gunite is beginning to show through that’s a big red flag for you that it’s time to have a professional like Gappsi check it out. The pool surface is deteriorating; which can only worsen with time and temperatures.

Pro Tip: In addition to staining, unbalanced pH levels in your pool’s water can pit and deteriorate the surface of the pool. Do you find you have to clean your pool more?  There is a good chance the surface of the pool is pitting or your pool chemicals are increasingly imbalanced or both.  Also note that if a stain grows in size or quantity, or if repeated attempts to clean up and remove your stains are unsuccessful, it’s a good time for a professional gunite pool resurfacing / repair.

We paved the entire patio with the New G044 White Limestone and G044 Gray Limestone. The grey and white limestone are a favorite choice among new homeowners.

In the pool, Gappsi installed 6″ water line porcelain tiles and marble dusted with dark gray marble dust. The spa was also remodeled and re-marble dusted with all new equipment. A new pump, new filters, a new ozone system, and a new salt chlorine generator were installed.  The color of the marble dust with the reflection of the sky gives a very deep blue color to the pool water. Gunite pool builders in Roslyn Harbor NY

Gunite pool builders in Roslyn Harbor NYGappsi  just completed this project in Roslyn Harbor NY. We installed a 25×60 gunite pool. The pool is equipped with a very large sundeck and a spa raised and centered at the sundeck,  spilling over into the pool. The coping for the spa and the pool is Indiana Limestone and the patio we used Italian porcelain. Underneath the coping waterline we used porcelain tiles. We also used these as tiles markers at the edges of the steps in front of the spa there is a very large bench and steps to go down into the pool. In the back we build  a raised patio with 2 columns and spill over water ball with LED lights underneath the raised patio coping.  We installed 3 led sheer descends the rest of the patio was veneered with quartzite stones. The pool finish is diamond bright tahoe blue in the center of the pool. We installed a mosaic of 3 dolphins swimming around a ball. the pool is 5 feet deep at its deepest it is not a diving pool, it is more of a play pool. We installed 6 led laminar spilling into the pool. The pool has plenty of water features and LED lights.

Gunite pool built in Lloyd Harbor NY

Gunite pool built in Lloyd Harbor NY20×55 Gunite pool totally completed with the patio and the landscaping. The pool has a spa, and a sundeck. The finish is a super blue quartz diamond bright, we installed  bluestone coping for the swimming pool, autocover box and spa. There is a diving board and an auto cover. We did a stand ledge along one side of the pool. This way the kids from the diving board can just go to the right, step on the ledge and walk to the steps. The patio pavers are Gappsi natural stones.

Gunite To Vinyl Conversion on Long Island

Gunite To Vinyl Conversion on Long IslandThis Gunite swimming pool was built in 1960 and it lasted for about 60 years, in the last 4 years for some strange reason the pool shel started developing some cracks and got worse every year to the point that the pool totally cracked in half and started licking badly to the point of not being repareble. The cost of replacing this gunite swimming pool would have been tremendous and the clients had no budget for that. Not only the cost of redoing the pool but also the cost of removing the old pool and all the damage that would have accrued to the yard and the landscaping , irrigation fence and the entire patio would have needed to be replaced. We proposed to remodel the pool and reshape the inside to accommodate a custom vinyl liner, we added a sundeck with 12 inches of water and reshape the pool deep end to make it more with straight ankles instead of a bowl shape that it’s usually a gunite. This gunite swimming pool conversion came out very nice. We used a liner with a pattern of a terrazzo looking finish that makes the pool look like it’s a gunite pool with no border at the top. When doing a Gunite To Vinyl Conversion it’s expected that the liner might show some imperfections or some minor wrincles, the clients has to understand that a vinyl pool construction is built with angles a gunite pool is more rounded shaped inside, and the liners are a little more difficult to be measured.
