How to Design a Pool Pavilion with Outdoor Kitchen

Think about what makes a Long Island summer so special: warm days, late sunsets, and time spent with family and friends. The best way to make the most of it is by creating a destination right in your own backyard. This is about more than just adding a feature; it’s about building a backdrop for future memories. A sparkling, newly resurfaced pool paired with a custom pool pavilion with outdoor kitchen becomes the central hub for every gathering. It’s where you’ll host birthday parties, enjoy casual weeknight dinners, and simply relax on a sunny afternoon, making your home the go-to spot for fun and connection.

Outdoor-Pavilion-And-Pool-ResurfacingElevate Your Home With An Outdoor Pavilion And Pool Resurfacing this season and enjoy more time outdoors in your home! Every pool needs a resurfacing service eventually. Resurfacing helps enhance your pool’s brightness, fills in any holes or cracks, and helps maintain the structure of your pool.

Outdoor Pavilion And Pool Resurfacing

Resurfacing can repair problems like cracks and wear, while also enhancing and updating your pool’s appearance. While not needed as often as other services, resurfacing should still be on your list of pool maintenance tasks.  Here are four reasons it’s time to resurface your swimming pool:

  1. You notice staining – Pools can start to get discolored after years of wear and tear. These stains can come from the minerals, chemicals, or other materials in the water such as leaves and natural debris.  Check to see if the stains are algae, which will be a shade of green or even red, or another color. If your cleaning efforts are unsuccessful, it may be time to resurface the pool.
  2. Material is coming off – When your pool surface feels like sandpaper and you can see the raw gunite peeking through, it’s time to resurface your pool.  There are a lot of different factors that can cause the pool’s surface materials to break down and come off, such as years of heavy use,  unbalanced pH levels, as well as sudden damage.  Once the surface layer starts to come off, it’s only going to continue and spread. So, it’s important to have it resurfaced as soon as you notice problems.
  3. There Are Leaks – The longer you wait to repair a leak in your pool, the more it will cost. So, be on the lookout for these signs of leaks to see if it’s time to repair and resurface your pool: ♦  Wet spots of grass near the pool area ♦  Loose or falling tiles ♦  Cracks or gaps in the concrete ♦  Water loss is greater than the evaporation rate
  4. You’re Ready for an Update – resurfacing is more than just a way to repair and maintain your pool: It also gives you the opportunity to transform and enhance the way your pool looks.

Additionally, outdoor cooking can help keep cooking smells and heat outside rather than inside the house.  Plus enjoy the beauty of the outdoors while still having the convenience of a functional kitchen space. Outdoor-Pavilion-And-Pool-Resurfacing2Outdoor Kitchen Pavilion Appliances and Amenities

What you add to your pavilion is truly what makes or breaks the design. An outdoor kitchen pavilion is a great place to have your favorite grill, firepit, or pizza oven. The details of what you want in your outdoor kitchen are completely up to you. When designing your outdoor kitchen pavilion, it’s important to consider the appliances and amenities that will make it functional and enjoyable.

  • Grill: A grill is one of the most popular and enjoyable ways of cooking outdoors. With countless options to choose from, you’ll be sure to find the perfect grill for your pavilion.
  • Pizza Oven: A pizza oven is a great addition to your outdoor kitchen. Combine it with a countertop and enjoy an evening of making and eating your favorite pizza.
  • Fireplace or Firepit: A fireplace and chimney in a pavilion create a space for people to gather.
  • Lighting & Electrical: As the sun sets, you’ll want to make sure the party continues. Running electrical to your outdoor kitchen pavilion opens up a whole new world of opportunities. Having power at the pavilion makes it possible to plug in any of your small appliances or fans. In addition, having proper lighting in your pavilion allows you to create the ambiance you want.
  • TV: To take your entertainment to the next level, consider adding a TV to the corner of your pavilion. Entertain in style without missing any of the action.

  • Countertop: For a complete outdoor kitchen pavilion experience, you’ll want to add some counter space. Because it’s outdoors, be sure to use the appropriate material, like granite or other stone.
  • Bar or Island: An island or bar provides some flow to your pavilion kitchen floorplan. It also gives you a workspace or a place to pull up a bar chair.
  • Sink: A sink in your outdoor kitchen will make time in your pavilion all the more enjoyable. Including a sink will also require plumbing to be run to your pavilion.
  • Refrigerator: A refrigerator or minifridge is a great addition to your pavilion kitchen. Keep all your food and drinks nice and cold and ready for you to enjoy.
  • Ice maker: An ice maker in your outdoor kitchen keeps you from needing to run to the house all the time.

Sandblasted  Marble Pavers Pool Patio Dix Hills NY

This backyard in Dix Hills NY started with the renovation of the gunite swimming pool. We installed 6 inches of porcelain tiles in the water line and red-marbled dusted the pool with gray marble dust. We replumbed the entire pool and installed all new equipment. The pool is about 50 years old and we made it look brand new again. We installed and redesigned an all-new marble patio with G043 marble pavers. Gappsi built two columns on the side of the pool and veneered it with the silver travertine random size veneer split faced and tumbled and capt the top with 2 inches 24×24 G043 copings. As well as the pool coping is two inches of G043 marble coping. We installed two sheer descent waterfalls built into the columns. In addition, we installed the largest SR Smith slide between the two columns. We also installed the diving board and an all-new pavilion.  With an outdoor kitchen and a wall in the back. The refrigerator sink and a free-standing grill on the side. The inside of the pavilion is an open beam stained in mahogany color with a fan. All isak trims and gutters were installed to finish the pavilion. We also re-landscaped the new part of the backyard renovation. We installed a natural stone wall to create a flat area behind the swimming pool. Clients are very happy. Another backyard redesign and marble pavers installation by Gappsi in Dix Hills NY.

Planning Your Backyard Oasis: Layout, Safety, and Regulations

Turning your backyard vision into a reality starts with a solid plan. A truly functional and beautiful outdoor space—one that blends a sparkling pool with a comfortable pavilion—doesn’t happen by chance. It requires careful thought about how you’ll use the space, how it will flow, and how it fits within your property’s specific rules. Before you get caught up in choosing tile and finishes, taking the time to map out the fundamentals ensures your new oasis is not only stunning but also safe, practical, and built to last. This initial planning phase is the most critical step in creating a backyard you and your family will enjoy for years to come.

Checking Local Building Laws

Before any ground is broken, the first step is a practical one: understanding your local building laws. Every town on Long Island has specific regulations, often called setbacks, that dictate how close structures like a swimming pool or pavilion can be to your property lines, your house, and other buildings. Ignoring these rules can lead to costly fines and the heartbreaking task of having to move or remove a structure. A professional team familiar with Nassau and Suffolk County codes can handle the permits and ensure your project is compliant from the start, saving you headaches and ensuring everything is done correctly and legally.

Designing the Ideal Layout

Once you know your boundaries, you can focus on creating the perfect layout. This is where you decide how your pool, pavilion, and other features will work together. Think about the path of the sun, the prevailing winds, and the best views from your house. A well-designed layout considers not just aesthetics but also the daily experience of using the space. The goal is to create distinct zones for swimming, cooking, dining, and relaxing that feel connected yet uncluttered, making your backyard an intuitive and enjoyable extension of your home.

Space and Flow Considerations

The size of your yard will naturally guide your design, but even smaller spaces can accommodate a beautiful pool and kitchen area. A compact plunge pool might only be 6×10 feet, while a larger lap pool could stretch to 40 feet or more. Similarly, an outdoor kitchen can be a simple 10×10 foot grilling station or a sprawling 20×20 foot culinary hub. The key is to maintain proper flow between these areas. As a rule of thumb, always leave at least three feet of clear walkway space to ensure people can move around comfortably and safely without feeling cramped.

Safety by Design: Visibility and Splash Zones

A smart layout prioritizes safety without sacrificing style. When placing your outdoor kitchen or seating area, make sure you have a clear line of sight to the entire pool. This is essential for keeping an eye on children and also makes the space feel more connected and social. You can chat with guests or watch the kids play while you’re grilling. Also, consider the splash zone. Position lounge chairs, dining tables, and cooking equipment far enough away from the pool’s edge to keep them comfortably dry during an active afternoon of swimming.

The Value of a Professional Landscape Designer

Bringing all these elements together can feel overwhelming, which is why working with an experienced landscape designer is so valuable. A professional can create a cohesive plan that maximizes your property’s potential, taking into account everything from sun exposure to drainage. They can help you visualize the final result and ensure that practical elements like plumbing and electrical lines are seamlessly integrated. At Gappsi, our landscape design team specializes in creating unified outdoor living spaces where every feature, from the masonry to the plantings, works in harmony.

Budgeting for Your Pool and Pavilion Project

Creating your dream backyard is a significant investment, and establishing a clear budget from the outset is essential for a smooth process. Understanding the potential costs associated with each component—the pool, the pavilion, the outdoor kitchen, and the surrounding hardscaping—allows you to make informed decisions and prioritize what matters most to you. While final costs can vary based on size, materials, and custom features, having a general idea of the price ranges for different types of pools and structures will help you plan effectively and allocate your resources where they will bring you the most value and enjoyment.

Understanding New Swimming Pool Costs

The swimming pool is often the centerpiece of a backyard transformation, and its cost can vary significantly depending on the type you choose. Generally, in-ground vinyl liner pools are the most budget-friendly option, typically ranging from $25,000 to $50,000. Fiberglass pools, known for their quick installation and smooth finish, usually fall in the $35,000 to $65,000 range. Concrete (or gunite) pools are at the higher end, from $35,000 to over $100,000, because they offer complete customization in shape, size, and design features like built-in benches or tanning ledges.

Vinyl Liner vs. Concrete Pools

When choosing a pool, two of the most popular options on Long Island are vinyl liner and concrete. A vinyl liner pool offers a lower initial investment and a soft, smooth surface underfoot. On the other hand, a concrete pool provides unparalleled design flexibility, allowing you to create a truly one-of-a-kind shape that perfectly fits your landscape. While concrete requires a larger upfront budget and more intensive long-term maintenance, its durability and custom nature make it a preferred choice for homeowners seeking a unique, high-end look for their backyard oasis.

Estimating Outdoor Kitchen and Pavilion Costs

The cost of your outdoor kitchen and pavilion depends entirely on your vision. A simple setup with a high-quality grill and some counter space might start around $12,000, but this figure can grow substantially with added amenities. Factors that influence the price include the size and material of the pavilion, the quality of appliances like refrigerators and pizza ovens, and the choice of materials for countertops and masonry. Adding plumbing for a sink or electrical for lighting and entertainment systems will also impact the final budget, allowing you to create a space that is as simple or as luxurious as you desire.

Choosing the Right Swimming Pool for Your Home

Selecting the right type of in-ground pool is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your backyard. This choice will influence not only the initial cost and construction timeline but also the look, feel, and long-term maintenance requirements of your outdoor space. The three primary types of in-ground pools—fiberglass, vinyl liner, and concrete—each offer distinct advantages. By understanding the key characteristics of each, you can choose the option that best aligns with your budget, aesthetic preferences, and lifestyle, ensuring your new pool is a perfect fit for your family.

Types of In-Ground Pools

Your main choices for an in-ground pool are fiberglass, vinyl liner, and concrete (also known as gunite). Fiberglass pools are factory-molded shells that are delivered to your home in one piece, making for a very fast installation. Vinyl liner pools are built on-site with a steel or polymer frame and covered with a custom-fitted vinyl sheet. Concrete pools are the most traditional and are built completely from scratch, offering limitless design possibilities. Each type has a unique set of benefits related to durability, appearance, and upkeep that are worth considering carefully.

Fiberglass Pools

Fiberglass pools are celebrated for their durability and incredibly low maintenance. The shell is manufactured in a controlled environment and arrives ready to be placed in the excavated hole. The surface of a fiberglass pool is a smooth, non-porous gel coat that is gentle on your feet and naturally resistant to algae growth, which means you’ll spend less time and money on chemicals and cleaning. While you are limited to the manufacturer’s available shapes and sizes, the quick installation process means you can be swimming in your new pool much sooner.

Vinyl Liner Pools

Vinyl liner pools are a popular choice because they offer a great balance of customization and affordability. The initial installation cost is typically lower than that of fiberglass or concrete pools. The vinyl material provides a smooth, non-abrasive surface, and liners are available in a wide variety of colors and patterns. While the liner itself is durable, it will eventually need to be replaced, typically every 7 to 15 years. This does, however, give you the opportunity to give your pool a fresh new look down the road.

Concrete Pools

If you can dream it, you can build it with concrete. Also called gunite pools, these are built on-site and offer complete freedom when it comes to shape, size, depth, and integrated features like tanning ledges, waterfalls, or attached spas. This level of customization makes them ideal for fitting into unique spaces or achieving a specific design aesthetic. The porous nature of concrete means it requires more chemical maintenance to prevent algae, and it will need to be resurfaced every 10 to 20 years to keep it looking its best, a service Gappsi specializes in to restore and seal your pool surface.

Considering Long-Term Maintenance Costs

Beyond the initial price tag, it’s important to think about the long-term cost of ownership. Maintenance is a key factor where the pool types differ significantly. Fiberglass pools generally have the lowest lifetime cost due to their chemical efficiency and the fact they don’t require resurfacing or liner replacement. Vinyl liner pools have a moderate long-term cost, with the primary expense being the eventual replacement of the liner. Concrete pools require the most hands-on care, with higher chemical usage and the eventual need for acid washing and resurfacing, which is a significant but necessary expense to maintain its beauty and integrity.

Protecting Your Outdoor Investments

Creating a beautiful backyard with a new pool and pavilion is an exciting process, but it’s also a significant addition to your home’s value. Just like any other major home feature, it requires care to keep it looking and functioning its best for years to come. Thinking about protection from the start ensures your space remains a source of enjoyment, not a list of repairs. Simple maintenance and protective measures can make a world of difference in preserving the beauty and integrity of your outdoor oasis, safeguarding your investment against the elements and everyday wear and tear.

The Importance of Pool and Kitchen Covers

One of the most effective ways to protect your outdoor amenities is by keeping them covered. For your swimming pool, an automatic cover is a fantastic tool for shielding it from weather, falling leaves, and other debris, which simplifies cleaning and helps maintain water chemistry. Similarly, protecting your outdoor kitchen is crucial. A custom-built pavilion does more than just provide shade; it acts as a permanent roof, protecting your grill, countertops, and appliances from rain and sun. According to RTA Outdoor Living, covering your pool and outdoor kitchen is the best way to extend their lifespan and keep them in pristine condition.

Expected Lifespan and Durability

When you invest in high-quality construction, you can expect your outdoor pool and kitchen to last for decades. The key is combining expert craftsmanship with durable materials. Choosing robust options like natural stone for patios and countertops ensures your space can withstand Long Island’s changing seasons. Proper care is just as important as the initial build. Regular maintenance, including professional services to restore and seal surfaces, prevents minor issues from becoming major problems. With the right team and a commitment to upkeep, your backyard retreat will be a cherished feature of your home for generations.

The Health and Lifestyle Benefits of Owning a Pool

A swimming pool is much more than a beautiful water feature; it’s an investment in your family’s health and happiness. Having a pool right in your backyard encourages an active lifestyle, offering a fun and refreshing way to get daily exercise without ever leaving home. It’s a wonderful excuse to spend more time outdoors, soaking up sunlight and fresh air, which can lead to better sleep and reduced stress. This direct connection to nature and physical activity is a powerful combination for overall well-being. Beyond the personal health benefits, a pool transforms your home into a social hub. It becomes the go-to spot for summer barbecues, kids’ birthday parties, and relaxing weekends with loved ones. Imagine the priceless memories you’ll create, from teaching your kids to swim to hosting effortless get-togethers. A well-designed pool area adds significant value not just to your property, but to your quality of life, making your home the ultimate destination for fun and relaxation. It provides a screen-free zone where family can connect and play, strengthening bonds in a way that few other home features can.

Beyond the Pavilion: Other Outdoor Structures

Functional Pool Houses

A pavilion is a fantastic centerpiece for your backyard, but sometimes you need a bit more. A pool house is the perfect solution for adding shelter, storage, and convenience right next to your pool. Imagine having a dedicated space with changing rooms, a bathroom, or even a small kitchen. This eliminates the need for wet footprints trailing through your main house and gives your guests a comfortable place to freshen up. A well-designed pool house not only enhances the functionality of your entire outdoor living area but also adds significant value and appeal to your property. It transforms your pool area from just a place to swim into a self-contained resort-style retreat.

Bug-Free Screenhouses

One of the few downsides to enjoying a beautiful Long Island evening outdoors is dealing with pesky insects. A screenhouse or a screened-in gazebo offers the perfect compromise, letting you soak in the fresh air without the annoyance of bugs. This type of structure allows you to create a protected zone for dining, relaxing, or entertaining, extending the hours you can comfortably spend in your backyard. It’s an ideal setting for quiet evenings with a book or lively gatherings with friends, ensuring that your plans aren’t ruined by unwanted guests. Much like our custom pavilions and pergolas, a screenhouse can be designed to perfectly match your home’s aesthetic and your backyard’s layout.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I plan on resurfacing my pool? While there isn’t a single magic number, a well-maintained concrete pool typically needs resurfacing every 10 to 20 years. The real answer depends more on what you see and feel. If the surface feels rough like sandpaper, has stubborn stains that won’t go away, or you spot visible cracks, those are clear signs it’s time. Think of it less as a strict calendar appointment and more as a necessary update to protect your pool’s structure and keep it looking beautiful.

What’s the biggest difference in upkeep between a concrete and a vinyl liner pool? The main difference comes down to routine care versus long-term replacement. A concrete pool requires more hands-on weekly maintenance, like brushing the walls to prevent algae and keeping a closer eye on water chemistry. A vinyl liner pool is less demanding day-to-day, but you will need to plan for a full liner replacement every 7 to 15 years. So, your choice is between more consistent weekly work or a larger, less frequent replacement project.

Can I add a pavilion and outdoor kitchen if I already have a pool and patio? Absolutely. Adding a pavilion to an existing space is a fantastic way to enhance what you already love about your backyard. A skilled design team can create a structure that looks like it was always meant to be there. They will help you choose materials and a layout that complements your current patio and pool design, ensuring the new addition blends seamlessly and improves the overall flow of your outdoor living area.

How long does a combined pool and pavilion project typically take from start to finish? A project that includes both a new pool and a custom pavilion involves several stages, from design and permits to excavation and construction. While every project is unique, it’s wise to plan for a process that takes a few months. Factors like the complexity of the design, local permitting timelines, and weather can all influence the schedule. Starting the conversation early is the best way to ensure your new backyard is ready when you want it to be.

Do I need to hire separate companies for the pool, the pavilion, and the landscaping? You certainly can, but you don’t have to. Working with a single company that handles everything from the pool installation to the pavilion construction and landscape design makes the entire process much smoother. It ensures a cohesive vision from start to finish, so your patio stone perfectly matches your pool coping and the pavilion is placed in just the right spot. It also saves you the headache of coordinating different schedules and teams.

Key Takeaways

  • Pair Practical Upgrades with Dream Features: Use a necessary project, like pool resurfacing, as the perfect opportunity to add a pavilion or outdoor kitchen. This approach lets you create a complete backyard destination in one cohesive project.
  • A Smart Layout is a Safe Layout: Before you choose finishes, map out your space. A well-planned design considers local codes, sun direction, and clear sightlines to the pool, ensuring your backyard is as functional and safe as it is beautiful.
  • Match Your Pool Type to Your Lifestyle: Your choice between a vinyl, fiberglass, or concrete pool impacts more than just the initial cost. Consider the long-term maintenance and design flexibility of each to find the perfect fit for your budget and family.
