Outdoor-Kitchen-Pavilion-with-Pizza-Oven-Built-in-Dix-Hills-NY3Gappsi completed this Outdoor Kitchen Pavilion with a Pizza Oven in Suffolk County Long Island.

Create your ideal backyard by adding all the conveniences of the indoors.  When you enhance your outdoor living area with a grill, pizza oven, kitchen island, landscape lighting, or outdoor heating you extend the time you can entertain outdoors.

Gone are the days when your friends as well as family leave your outdoor celebration because it’s getting too dark, too cold, or too rainy. When you have an outdoor pavilion with a fireplace and kitchen, your outdoor entertaining can last well into the night. Not only will the fire from the fireplace keep you warm and toasty, but it can also provide a relaxing light source for lighthearted conversation and reminisce of days gone by.

Plus, when you have an outdoor kitchen in your pavilion, you can keep the tasty food cooking throughout the night. Whether it’s burgers on the grill or pizza in your pizza oven, you can cook outdoors in a shaded structure, like a pavilion, no matter the temperature or weather.

We built this 16 x 24 A-Frame Pavilion in Dix Hills, NY. The Pavilion was a kit purchased through Country Lane Gazebos.  Each pavilion is built to order and completely customizable to your specifications.  Gappsi is a dealer for Country Lane.  They offer the highest quality, Amish-built GazeboPergola, and Pavilion Kits.  Their outdoor structures are made from durable materials, including wood, vinyl, and aluminum, and designed to withstand the elements.

Their structures have many different features, color options, and styles to match your home and style preferences. Country Lane Gazebos is a popular choice if you are looking for a stylish and functional outdoor structure to enhance your backyard.

Have The Outdoor Kitchen of Your Dreams

More and more, outdoor areas include a fully functional outdoor kitchen, fireplaces or fire pits, cozy seating, advanced lighting, and heating systems.  Our recent Pavilion installation included veneered columns for each post to sit on, which enhanced the overall design and aesthetics.  We added a kitchen with an island under it.  The island includes a Tan Brown Granite countertop.  This long-lasting natural granite is appropriate for a variety of indoor and outdoor applications including walls, floors, countertops, and other architectural components.  On one side the counter is raised to bar height.  A bi-level countertop invites contrast from a design perspective, which can help you achieve some visual interest in your Gappsi kitchen design. This contrast could be further emphasized by using different countertop materials for the lower and higher portions of the counter.

Fire Magic Outdoor Kitchen Appliances

The outdoor kitchen included appliances made by Fire Magic and a Summit Refrigerator.  Designed and made in the USA.  Fire Magic Grills combines high-tech features, craftsmanship, styling, & performance to create a superior outdoor kitchen.  Their true-width cooking grids offer some of the largest cooking areas by square inch in their size classes, allowing you to cook more food at once. Upgrade Your Outdoors with a Patio and Pool Renovation – Bellmore NY

Upgrade-Your-Outdoors-with-a-Patio-and-Pool-RenovationAre You Ready to Upgrade Your Outdoors with a Patio and Pool Renovation?

Are you thinking about a patio and pool renovation?  With all the options of a grand backyard remodel, we know first-hand that it can be overwhelming to decide which remodeling ideas are worth the investment. Below, we have included some remodeling ideas that we believe can give you a wonderful result and add value to your property.

Our team at Gappsi renovated this backyard located in Bellmore NY.  The pool was a very unique construction. It had a concrete floor and fiberglass walls. We modified the pool and installed a new liner that was dark black with a very unique and beautiful design on it.  We also created a sundeck in the pool and added two bubblers.

Here’s Why Investing in a New Vinyl Liner is a Decision You Won’t Regret!

  1. Enhanced Aesthetics:  A new vinyl liner can transform the appearance of your pool, turning it into a captivating centerpiece. With abundant patterns to choose from, you have the creative freedom to align your pool’s aesthetic with your style.
  2. Improved Pool Safety: Safety is paramount, and a new vinyl liner contributes to the security of your pool area. Cracks, tears, and worn-out liners can pose safety hazards. By replacing your old liner, you ensure a secure environment for your family and guests. Our high-quality liner construction provides a reliable barrier between swimmers and the pool’s structure.
  3. Longer Lifespan of Your Pool: A vinyl liner acts as a protective shield for your pool’s shell. By investing in a quality liner, you’re safeguarding your pool from potential damage caused by water and chemicals. This not only extends the life of your pool but also reduces the need for frequent repairs and maintenance.
  4. Increased Energy Efficiency: A Greener Pool!  An upgraded vinyl liner contributes to a more energy-efficient pool. The improved insulation properties of the liner help regulate the water temperature, reducing heat loss during the colder months. This leads to lower energy consumption and decreased heating costs. Additionally, the liner minimizes water loss through evaporation, further contributing to a greener pool operation.
  5. Savings: The financial benefits of a new vinyl swimming pool liner extend beyond reduced energy costs. With enhanced durability and protection, you’re likely to save on maintenance expenses and potential repairs. By making this investment now, you’re setting the stage for long-term financial savings.

Upgrade-Your-Outdoors-with-a-Patio-and-Pool-Renovation2Pretty Your Place with Natural Stone Pavers

Adding a brand-new pool deck or pool pavers could be your answer to a beautiful outdoor upgrade to complete your outdoor space. For a well-designed landscape, a pool deck or patio is just as important as the pool. From sunbaking to playing and entertaining your guests, you may find that you spend more time on the deck than inside your swimming pool. A well-thought-out design should be considered to finish your landscape.

Whether you’re looking to create a tropical oasis, natural grotto, or modern masterpiece, pool decking can take your swimming pool to the next level.

Upgrade Your Outdoors with a Patio and Pool Renovation1For the patio, we used G044 Gray Limestone selected from the Gappsi Natural Stone Collection. The luxurious feel and look of limestone make it a great choice for a patio and pool deck. We used two inches of coping for the pool edges and a French pattern for the entire backyard.

Make a Splash with Pool Water Features

Our team at Gappsi installed a water feature wall with a sheer descent.  Included in the water feature are two LED spillover water balls that light up at night.

When you add water features to your outdoor area, the lush sound of falling water can boost your ambiance level around the pool.  Adding water features that make a splash, like fountains, waterfalls, scuppers, and sprayers, are often simple to layer into an existing pool design and can breathe new life into a lackluster pool area with motion and sound.

Enhance Your Outdoor Living Space with a Pergola, Gazebo, or Pavilion

An outdoor structure like a gazebo, pergola, or pavilion will enable you to spend more time with friends and family outside. This allows you to enjoy fresh air and sunshine while you relax in your exterior living space. Each option can be a stylish and practical addition to any landscape design and increase the value of your home. Whether you’re looking to add shade to your backyard or create the perfect platform for your stone fire pit – a covered patio can provide the perfect space for entertaining or relaxing at home.

Upgrade-Your-Outdoors-with-a-Patio-and-Pool-Renovation4Gappsi built a pavilion covering the outdoor kitchen with an L-shaped Island. We veneered the walls with a 4-inch split face silver travertine and black granite polished countertop.  In addition, we installed all Fire Magic Appliances, including the bar sink, grill, and drawers.  We used a Summit Refrigerator to complete the outdoor kitchen.  In a separate area, we added an Alfa 4 Pizza Wood-Burning Oven.

Heat Things With a Fire Pit

A fire pit is a fantastic way to give your outdoor space warmth, and unintentional light might be the upgrade your outdoor area needs. When thoughtfully designed and integrated into your property’s landscape, an outdoor firepit will extend the living space of your home and provide another zone for your family and friends to gather.  A sitting area was made for the gas firepit and added a Henry Studio concrete bench.

What About Adding a Passion Spa The Excite to Your Backyard Paradise

The Excite Spa is a spacious spa that provides room for up to seven people. Full bench seating combined with a variety of massage experiences.  Gappsi installed The Excite by Passion Spas.  It is unique and highly therapeutic with aqua rolling massage, therapy wave zone intense, and waterfall massage.

  • Calorie burn.

Upgrade-Your-Outdoors-with-a-Patio-and-Pool-Renovation5Create a Pet Dog Run with Artificial Grass

Dogs love comfort just as much as humans and take to artificial grass pretty quickly. It feels very similar to real grass and looks almost identical, except it can’t be dug up or made muddy. We also assure you that our artificial grass is safe for pets as there are no toxin layers on our grass.  We installed synthetic turf on the side of the house for a dog run.

Artificial Grass is Extremely Durable

Unlike real grass, which is prone to brown patches, holes, and mud, synthetic turf provides a durable play area for your pups that can handle any level of roughhousing. The synthetic polyethylene material will never fade or turn brown, no matter how much traffic it sees, so your home will look beautiful and well-maintained all year long. Our pet turf also features an ultra-durable turf backing that is triple-reinforced through tuft bind technology, ensuring that your grass blades won’t break or tear, even with hours of running and playing.

Allergen-Free Synthetic Turf

Hayfever, or grass allergy, is extremely common among humans. But did you know that dogs can have allergic reactions to grass and its maintenance chemicals too? The pesticides and fertilizers needed to maintain natural grass can harm your dogs’ health and aggravate their allergies. Artificial grass doesn’t have the same high pollen count as natural grass and doesn’t require any harmful chemicals to maintain its lush appearance. Therefore, your dogs can run around happy and healthy without any cause for worry.

This is the latest Gappsi backyard pool and patio renovation.  It was an extremely detailed backyard, complete with multiple entertaining areas.   completed in Bellmore Nassau County, Long Island NY. Very detailed backyard, complete with everything.

Asphalt-Basketball-Court-Installation-with-Dominator-Hoop---Brentwood-NY2Are you looking for an asphalt Basketball Court contractor in Suffolk or Nassau County NY? Gappsi offers a variety of Sports Game Courts to make the perfect addition to your home, school, business, club, or organization! Choose from a full-basketball court, half-court, or just the key; we have the court to perfectly match your space.

With summer on its way, kids will start to have fun with their favorite hobbies outside again.  For an outdoor sports game court that’s sure to please, team up with the professionals at Gappsi.

LET US BUILD YOUR BASKETBALL COURT TODAY

The most affordable option for having a basketball court is an asphalt pad with painted lines. Gappsi specializes in hard court (asphalt) construction of basketball courts. Hard courts are the most common type also. They are highly durable and can withstand heavy underfoot traffic. The bounce of the ball is also much more precise on hard courts. Hard courts usually use asphalt or concrete. The downside to hard courts is that they are less forgiving on your lower joints (ankles and knees).

Clay courts provide more cushioning for joints and are easier on the body overall. However, they are much more slippery to play on than hard or grass courts. They are also dirtier than other court surfaces.

Grass courts are easy on the joints of the body. The ball also bounces quickly off grass tennis courts. Grass tennis courts are harder to learn the game on and playing on them requires a certain level of skill.

Asphalt-Basketball-Court-Installation-with-Dominator-Hoop---Brentwood-NY1Our courts are high-performance, low-maintenance basketball courts.  Made from the finest high-quality materials ensuring longevity as well as durability. Our team of professionals utilizes the latest cutting-edge processes to preserve the integrity of the asphalt base and guarantee the highest quality of the court surface. Gappsi courts also require minimal upkeep.

What Type of Paint Can You Use on Asphalt Sports Game Courts?

Asphalt sports game courts, such as basketball courts, tennis courts, and athletic tracks, require a specific type of paint that is durable, non-slip, and can withstand harsh outdoor elements. The paint used on these types of surfaces is specially formulated to provide excellent adhesion to asphalt and offer the necessary properties for sports activities.

Several types of paint are commonly used on asphalt courts, each with its unique properties and advantages.

  • Acrylic paint offers excellent durability and non-slip properties, while latex paint provides flexibility to withstand temperature changes.
  • Polyurethane paint is highly resistant to abrasion, and epoxy paint offers exceptional durability and chemical resistance.
  • Thermoplastic paint is primarily used for line markings and provides excellent adhesion and longevity.

By selecting the appropriate type of paint for a specific court, you can ensure that the surface is safe, durable, and visually appealing, enhancing the overall playing experience for athletes.

Why Build a Home Outdoor Basketball Court?

Constructing an outdoor court is a major financial investment, but it’s well worth it.

  1. Property value: Any exterior hardscaping you do can improve your property value, and this is certainly true of adding an outdoor court. As long as you maintain its appearance, your court can increase your resale value by anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000!
  2. Convenience: Playing basketball on the hoop in the driveway can work just fine. However, constantly moving cars out of the way gets to be a big pain after a while. Installing a dedicated outdoor court gets rid of that headache for you.
  3. Safety: A ball rolling from the driveway and out onto the street can be very dangerous, especially if you live in a high-traffic area. A strategically placed outdoor court ensures the ball never rolls down into the street or near any passing cars.

Marble Acid Wash: What It Is & How It Works

Acid and marble have a complicated relationship. A simple splash of lemon juice on your kitchen island can leave a permanent dull spot, a type of damage called an etch. Yet, in the hands of a professional, that same acidic reaction can create a beautiful, antique finish on stone. Understanding this difference is key for any homeowner with natural stone surfaces. An accidental spill causes damage, but an intentional marble acid wash is a design choice that adds texture and character. We’ll explore both sides of the story: how to protect your countertops from common household acids and what to do about accidental etching. We will also show you how this process is used to create stunning, low-maintenance finishes for your home.

Commercial-Swimming-Pool-Acid-Wash-and-Marble-Dusting-Renovation1Pool Acid Wash and Marble Dusting Why Do It? Swimming Pool Renovation

Pool acid wash and marble dusting are important when pool stains and algae build-up can cause your pool’s surface to look grimy and your pool water to look dirty. Not only will you not want to dive into your pool, but you also won’t want to lounge on your pool chaise and look at the filthy water and tiles.

A good rule of thumb to help determine whether a pool needs acid-washing or not is to check the shallow end of the pool. See if you can see the bottom of the pool. If you can, then it may still be possible for you to restore your pool water with the help of chemicals. But if the floor isn’t visible, then the cost and labor associated with using chemicals are much more expensive than acid washing. It can also take a lot more time.

Check Out Our Swimming Pool Gallery

How Acid Washing Your Pool Works?

The acid used in this process removes a thin layer of material from the surface of the pool. Doing this too often will break down the integrity of the plaster or marcasite finish.

Pool acid washing is a process where chemicals—mainly hydrochloric acid, also known as muriatic acid—are combined with water and sprayed onto your pool’s surface to remove any grime and build-up. A professional pool cleaner will then use a brush to scrub out the staining and other grime. The chemical wash allows for easier removal of algae and staining that has been built upon your pool’s surface.

Commercial-Swimming-Pool-Acid-Wash-and-Marble-Dusting-Renovation2What Algae and Stains are Removed?

Whether you have a plaster pool, Gunite, or concrete, different types of algae and staining will occur and cause your outdoor oasis to look dirty.

♦ Algae Growth – Algae growth is the most common type of staining that pool owners look to get removed through pool acid washing. Lack of pool cleaning, improper pool pH balance, and low pool circulation are all causes of algae growth. The algae growth can cause health issues along with clogged pool filters. Pool acid washing can help remove algae growth and prevent any further damage from occurring to you or your oasis

♦ Hard Water – Hard water stains, also known as scum, are created from calcium deposits. These deposits can often be found along the edge of your pool where the tile meets the water. Hard water stains lead to cloudy water and a lower (and unsafe) water pH level. Hard water stains can also be removed through pool acid washing.

♦ Copper Stains – Similar to magnesium stains, copper stains also occur when your pool’s source water comes from well water typically high in all minerals. Copper stains create blue, green, and black staining in your pool.

♦ Magnesium Stains – Depending on the type of water you fill your pool with, magnesium may be present. Too much magnesium in your pool can cause discoloration such as pink, red, and even black.

Is Acid Washing Safe?

As mentioned above, pool acid washing requires the use of harsh chemicals. If you’re not a professional pool cleaner, it can be easy to get hurt from the harsh chemicals needed to successfully clean your pool. If you’re looking to get your pool acid washed, then hiring a professional is ideal not just for your health and safety, but also for the safety of your pool. Pool acid washing, when not done correctly, can cause:

  • Chemical burns on the skin if protective gear is not worn
  • Lung damage if the chemicals are breathed into the body
  • Discoloration on your pool’s surface
  • Damage on your pool’s surface

Since pool washing only needs to be done once every 5-7 years, it’s best to consult a professional pool cleaner.

Commercial-Swimming-Pool-Acid-Wash-and-Marble-Dusting-RenovationThe Benefits of Quartz on Your Pool Finish – Marble Dusting

Pool owners are always on the lookout for materials that are durable, low maintenance, and easy to clean. One of the best materials for pool finishes is quartz. Quartz is an aggregate of quartz crystals, resins, and pigments. It is an incredibly strong and long-lasting material that can add value and beauty to your pool. Consider the following benefits of a quartz finish for your pool.

♦ Aesthetics – Quartz’s design options are limitless. The type of quartz you select affects the appearance of the water in your pool, as the speckles catch the light and change the water’s color. This means that you can use a quartz finish to shade your pool’s water in a variety of different hues, from light blue to deep midnight blue. Whether you want to go for a classic and elegant look or an exciting and lively one, quartz can deliver. You can choose from a variety of finishes also, from pebble to smooth, each giving you a unique and beautiful surface.

♦ Comfort – When you swim or step into a pool, your comfort is essential. The quartz pool finish is smooth to the touch, making swimming more enjoyable and comfortable. Unlike plaster pools, which can be rough and abrasive, quartz feels soft and silky on your feet and skin. Moreover, quartz’s non-porous surface lessens the presence of harmful bacteria and makes the water feel softer, which is a great perk for your skin and hair.

The Science of Acid Etching on Marble

How a Chemical Reaction Creates an Etch

Marble is a calcium-based stone, which is what gives it that timeless, elegant look we all love. Unfortunately, this also makes it very sensitive to acids. When something acidic, like lemon juice, wine, or even the wrong cleaning product, comes into contact with marble, it causes a chemical reaction. This isn’t just a surface stain you can wipe off. The acid actually dissolves a tiny layer of the stone, a process called etching. An etch is physical damage that leaves a dull, milky spot where the polished finish used to be, and it can’t simply be cleaned away.

Using harsh chemicals like muriatic acid on marble is especially damaging for this reason. The strong acid reaction can quickly ruin the stone’s polished surface, leaving it looking dull and uneven. Since etching is actual damage to the stone, a simple cleaning won’t fix it. The surface usually needs to be professionally honed and re-polished to restore its smooth, glossy appearance. The best approach is always prevention, like using coasters and pH-neutral cleaners. But since life happens, it’s good to know that professional restoration and sealing can correct the damage and help protect your beautiful marble from future mishaps.

Understanding Accidental Etching vs. an Intentional Finish

While we’ve been talking about using acid to deep clean a swimming pool, it’s important to understand how acid interacts with other surfaces around your home, especially natural stone. The same chemical process that strips away grime in a pool can either damage or beautifully finish a marble countertop. The key difference is intent. Accidental spills can cause what’s known as etching, which looks like a dull, discolored spot on your polished stone. It’s essentially a chemical burn that mars the surface and dulls its shine.

On the other hand, an acid wash can be an intentional finish applied by professionals to create a specific look and texture. This process gives the stone a weathered, matte appearance that is both beautiful and practical. Knowing the difference is crucial for any homeowner with natural stone surfaces. It helps you protect your investment from accidental damage while also opening your eyes to unique design possibilities for your kitchen, bathroom, or outdoor living space. Understanding your materials is the first step to maintaining their beauty for years to come.

What Causes Accidental Etching?

Accidental etching happens when an acidic substance comes into contact with a calcium-carbonate-based stone, like marble, limestone, or travertine. The acid triggers a chemical reaction that literally eats away at the stone’s surface, destroying the polish and leaving a dull, rough patch. It’s not a stain that has soaked into the stone; it’s physical damage to the stone itself. Think of it as a permanent burn mark. This is why you might notice dull spots on your marble kitchen island where a splash of lemon juice or a drop of wine once sat, even after you’ve wiped it clean.

Common Household Items to Avoid

The culprits behind most accidental etching are probably sitting in your kitchen right now. Common household acids are the biggest threat to your polished marble surfaces. You’ll want to be extra careful with things like lemon juice, vinegar, wine, and tomato sauce. It’s not just food items, either. Many all-purpose or bathroom cleaners contain harsh acids that can instantly damage your stone. Always read the label on your cleaning products and opt for pH-neutral cleaners specifically designed for natural stone to keep your surfaces looking their best.

The Role and Limitations of Marble Sealers

Many homeowners believe that sealing their marble makes it indestructible, but that’s a common misconception. A penetrating sealer is designed to absorb into the stone’s pores to protect it from absorbing liquids and causing color stains. However, no sealer can make marble acid-proof. Etching happens on the surface, so a sealer won’t stop that chemical reaction. The best defense is to wipe up any acidic spills immediately. Professional restoration and sealing services are vital for protection, but daily vigilance is what truly preserves your stone’s polished shine.

Acid Washing as a Countertop Finish

Now that we’ve covered the accidental side of things, let’s look at how acid can be used intentionally. An acid-wash finish is a purposeful treatment where acid is applied to a stone’s surface to create a unique texture. Unlike the glossy look of polished stone, an acid-washed finish is matte and has a slightly weathered or antique feel. This finish is popular for homeowners who want a more rustic or organic look for their countertops, vanities, or even outdoor kitchen surfaces. It’s a way to harness that chemical reaction for a beautiful design outcome.

Creating a Textured, Antique Look

The primary appeal of an acid-wash finish is its aesthetic. The process creates a soft, textured surface that feels wonderful to the touch and has a non-reflective, matte appearance. This gives the stone an antique, lived-in character right from the start. It’s a perfect choice if you’re aiming for a design that feels warm and inviting rather than sleek and modern. The subtle texture adds depth and dimension to the stone, highlighting its natural patterns in a completely different way than a high-gloss polish would.

How an Acid-Wash Finish Hides Wear and Tear

Beyond its beauty, an acid-wash finish is incredibly practical. Because the surface is already textured and matte, it does an excellent job of camouflaging future wear and tear. Everyday scratches, small dings, and even minor etches from accidental spills tend to blend right into the existing finish. This makes it a fantastic, low-maintenance option for busy areas like a family kitchen or an outdoor bar. You get the elegance of natural stone without the constant worry about keeping a perfect, glossy surface pristine.

How to Care for Marble Surfaces

General Marble Vulnerabilities

Marble is absolutely stunning, but its classic beauty comes with a bit of a trade-off: it’s a softer, more porous stone. This means it’s more susceptible to certain types of damage than harder stones like granite. Understanding these vulnerabilities is the first step to keeping your marble looking pristine for years. It’s not about being afraid to live with your beautiful surfaces, but rather knowing how to care for them properly. From the kitchen countertop to your patio pavers, a little preventative care goes a long way in protecting your investment and maintaining that elegant finish you fell in love with.

Preventing Cracks from Heat

One of the quickest ways to damage marble is with extreme heat. Placing a hot pot or pan directly from the stove or oven onto a marble surface can cause thermal shock, leading to cracks in the stone. This isn’t a stain you can buff out; it’s a structural fracture. The best defense is a simple one: always use trivets, hot pads, or cutting boards as a barrier. Making this a habit will protect your marble from unsightly and often irreparable heat damage, ensuring your countertops or tables remain flawless.

What is Marble “Bruising”?

Have you ever noticed small, white marks on a marble surface after an impact? This is often called “bruising.” It happens when a heavy object, like a can from the pantry or a hefty pot, is dropped onto the stone. These white flecks are tiny fractures just below the surface caused by the sharp impact. Unlike an etch, which is a chemical reaction on the surface, a bruise is a physical mark within the stone itself. While sealers protect against stains, they can’t prevent bruising, so it’s wise to be mindful when handling heavy items around your marble installations.

How to Repair Acid Etching

Acid etching is probably the most common issue marble owners face. It happens when an acidic substance—like lemon juice, vinegar, or even some harsh cleaners—comes into contact with the marble. The acid reacts with the calcium carbonate in the stone and literally eats away a tiny bit of the surface, leaving a dull, whitish mark. It’s important to know that an etch is not a stain; it’s physical damage to the stone’s finish. The good news is that for minor cases, you don’t have to live with it forever.

Fixing Light Etching at Home

For very light etching, you might be able to handle the repair yourself. There are specialized marble polishing powders and pastes available that are designed to gently buff out these dull spots. These products work by removing a microscopic layer of the stone to restore its shine. Before you start, always clean the area thoroughly and make sure it’s completely dry. It’s also crucial to test the product on a small, hidden spot first to see how your specific marble reacts. With a bit of patience and elbow grease, you can often restore the luster to your surface.

When to Call a Professional for Stone Restoration

If you’re dealing with deep etches, widespread dullness, or significant scratches, it’s time to call in the experts. DIY methods can sometimes make severe damage worse if not done correctly. A professional stone restoration company has the right equipment and expertise to handle serious issues. They can sand down the surface to remove the damaged layer and then re-hone or re-polish it to its original finish. ♦ Durability – One main benefit of quartz as a pool finish is its durability. Quartz is a highly durable and impact-resistant material that can withstand the test of time. It resists chipping, fading, and cracking. Because of quartz’s unique composition, it creates a hard and dense surface that resists stains, algae, and other common pool chemicals.

♦ Maintenance – A great benefit of a quartz pool finish is that it requires low maintenance. The surface is smooth and non-porous, making it much harder for dirt and debris to adhere to the surface. A quartz pool finish will only need occasional brushing and weekly cleaning with a mild pool cleaner. This makes it an ideal choice for those who seek an easy-to-maintain pool.

♦ Costs Less – In the long run, quartz pool finishes are more cost-efficient. Its surface is durable and gives a lasting finish, reducing the need for frequent replacements. It is also more resistant to staining and fading, making it less prone to costly cleaning and maintenance. Investing in a quartz pool finish can also increase the value of your home and property, making it a worthwhile investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get my pool acid washed? An acid wash is a pretty intensive process, so it’s not something you need to do every year. For most pools, scheduling an acid wash every five to seven years is a good guideline. This is enough to handle tough stains and algae buildup without wearing down your pool’s surface too quickly. If your pool gets heavy use or is prone to algae, you might need it sooner, but it’s best to consult a professional to assess its condition.

What’s the difference between an acid wash for a pool and an acid-wash finish on a countertop? Think of it as the difference between deep cleaning and designing. A pool acid wash is a restorative cleaning process that uses acid to strip away a thin layer of the pool’s surface, removing stubborn stains and algae. An acid-wash finish on a marble countertop, however, is an intentional design choice. Professionals apply acid to create a matte, textured, and antique look, which is beautiful and great at hiding future wear.

I spilled lemon juice on my marble countertop. Is it ruined forever? Don’t panic, it’s likely not ruined. That dull spot you see is called an etch, which is a chemical reaction on the surface. For very light etches, you might be able to fix it yourself with a special marble polishing powder. However, for deeper etches or if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, it’s best to call a professional. Stone restoration experts can hone and re-polish the surface to make it look new again.

Will a sealer prevent my marble from getting etched? This is a common misconception. A sealer is fantastic for preventing stains because it soaks into the stone’s pores and stops liquids from being absorbed. However, etching is a chemical reaction that happens on the surface of the stone itself. A sealer can’t stop acid from reacting with the marble. The best way to prevent etching is to wipe up acidic spills like wine or citrus juice immediately.

Is a quartz pool finish the same as a marble countertop? No, they are very different materials used for different purposes. A quartz pool finish, sometimes called marble dusting, is a blend of quartz crystals, resins, and pigments applied to the interior of a pool. It’s incredibly durable, smooth, and resistant to chemicals and algae. A marble countertop is a slab of natural stone quarried from the earth. While beautiful, marble is much softer and more sensitive to acids and heat than the engineered quartz material used in pools.

Key Takeaways

  • Acid has two very different roles for stone: An accidental splash of lemon juice can cause a permanent dull spot, known as an etch, on your marble countertop. However, professionals use a deliberate acid wash to deep clean pool surfaces or create a beautiful, textured finish on stone.
  • Prevention is the best care for marble: Always use trivets to protect against heat cracks, be careful with heavy items to avoid “bruising,” and clean with pH-neutral products. Keep in mind that sealers help prevent stains from soaking in, but they cannot stop the surface damage caused by acid etching.
  • Know your limits for repairs: While you might fix a very light etch with a special polishing powder, a pool acid wash and significant stone restoration are jobs for professionals. Using harsh chemicals or improper techniques can cause permanent damage to your surfaces or yourself.

How to Select the Right Outdoor Batting Cage for Your Needs

Whether you’re using your batting cage for your backyard, school/university, or commercial facility, the first question you need to ask is.  “How will we be using this cage?” That one question can save you thousands of dollars.  Not to mention a lot of trouble, so be sure you know the answer.

Maybe you’re a homeowner who’s setting up a backyard batting cage for the weekend so the kids can play in the backyard.  Maybe you’re a school or commercial facility and you need the cage up for a weekend tourney or fundraising event.  Either way a temporary, above-ground batting cage is a perfect choice.

If you’re looking for a cage that will perform day in and day out for years to come, then you need a more permanent batting cage like an in-ground one.

Batting-Cage-with-Synthetic-Turf-Smithtown-NY1Above-Ground vs In-Ground Batting Cages

Above-ground batting cages are generally temporary outdoor batting cage solutions, perfect for backyard cage use, corporate, or fundraising events. These types of cages usually install quickly.  They are not designed to stay up for long periods of time and are susceptible to high winds. Most above-ground nets are considered portable, and can quickly be set up at any location with a flat surface. The exception to this rule is the Bolt-Down cages.  As the name suggests, it needs to be bolted down to a concrete surface.

In-ground batting cages are for more permanent outdoor solution. To install these batting cage frames, you’re going to have to do some digging. The frames of these cages and nets can last for years. Many schools, universities, and commercial facilities benefit from side-by-side multi-lane batting cages that not only reduce the overall footprint of the cage but also help to reduce costs.

Determining Your Cage Size

Now that you know which TYPE of cage you need, the next step is determining what SIZE of cage you’ll need.  No matter what type of cage you’ve selected, you’ll need a flat surface for your cage to occupy.  Be sure to leave a minimum of 3 feet between the net and existing structures like sheds, garages, and houses to prevent damage and potential ricochet. Please don’t install your cage near trees and other objects like fences or telephone poles that can become potential ricochet points. If you don’t have much room, don’t despair. Other measures can be taken to install buffers inside your batting cage too.  For example padding on the object itself using pole padding to deaden the impact. These steps can allow you to place your batting cage closer to a structure.

No one size fits all when it comes to batting cages, you may have space restrictions or may not need a full 70’ for pitching and just need a 40’ for hitting.

Batting-Cage-with-Synthetic-Turf-Smithtown-NY2What Type of Netting Do You Need? What Twine Size is Right?

We recommend people buy the largest twine they can afford. A #42 Twine net is about twice as thick and twice as strong as a #21 Twine. The larger twined, heavier cages will snag balls better, look better, wear better, last longer, and you will be happier with them. You need a minimum of 60 lbs. of tensile strength.

Choosing the Right Artificial Synthetic Turf

No matter how big or small your home or facility is, installing artificial turf in your batting cages is a worthwhile investment. Synthetic turf is designed to withstand wear and tear that occurs when equipment is in high demand.

Gappsi carries many different varieties of artificial turf to choose from for your batting cages. Artificial turf is suitable for use in indoor or outdoor batting cages. You can choose padded or unpadded turf in a variety of materials to suit your needs.

Outdoor artificial turf often resembles spears of grass. Outdoor cages can be outfitted with permeable artificial turf that allows rain and other liquids to run off and then be absorbed into the ground underneath. Indoor artificial turf can also look like grass spears, or it may look more like carpet.

Exploring Indoor Batting Cage Solutions

While outdoor cages are fantastic, an indoor setup allows for year-round practice, regardless of what the Long Island weather is doing. Indoor batting cages are an excellent addition to a basement, a large garage, or a dedicated recreational building. They can be a key feature of a larger home remodeling project, transforming an underused area into a multi-functional training space. Two popular and highly effective options for indoor spaces are retractable ceiling cages and wall-mounted tension cages. Each offers unique benefits depending on your room’s layout and how you plan to use the space when you’re not practicing your swing.

Retractable Ceiling Cages

If your indoor area needs to serve multiple purposes, a retractable ceiling cage is an ingenious solution. These systems allow you to have a full-size, professional-quality batting cage that can be easily retracted up to the ceiling when it’s not in use. This feature is perfect for garages where you still need to park cars or for basements that double as a home gym or play area. When practice is over, the net and frame store neatly overhead, freeing up the entire floor. This flexibility ensures you can install a dedicated training zone without permanently sacrificing valuable square footage in your home.

Wall-Mounted Tension Cages

For rooms where a ceiling-mounted system might not be practical, or for those looking for a more permanent fixture in a dedicated space, wall-mounted tension cages are an ideal choice. These cages are securely anchored to the walls, using tension to create a taut and safe hitting environment. They make excellent use of vertical space and are perfect for long, narrow areas that might otherwise be difficult to utilize. A wall-mounted cage provides a sturdy and reliable setup for serious athletes who need a consistent place to train. Our team at Gappsi can help you design a custom solution that fits your room’s specific dimensions, ensuring a safe and professional installation.

Considering Custom Features and Accessories

Once you have the basic structure planned, you can think about the features that will make your batting cage truly functional and enjoyable. These accessories are not just add-ons; they are integral parts of creating a professional-grade practice space in your own backyard. From lighting that lets you practice after sunset to custom branding that makes the space feel uniquely yours, the right features can transform a simple cage into a premier training facility. Thinking through these options beforehand ensures your final installation meets all your athletic and aesthetic goals, providing a comprehensive solution for years of use.

Lighting and Pitching Mounds

To get the most out of your batting cage, you need to be able to use it whenever your schedule allows, not just during daylight hours. Installing proper lighting is key to extending your practice time. A professional installer can help you select and position lights that illuminate the entire cage without creating glare for the batter or pitcher. Beyond lighting, incorporating a regulation-height pitching mound adds a layer of realism to your training. We can integrate a durable, high-quality mound seamlessly with your synthetic turf, creating an authentic practice experience that helps players properly prepare for game day.

Custom Padding, Logos, and Home Plates

Personalizing your batting cage adds a professional touch and can also improve safety. Custom wall padding not only protects players from stray balls but can also feature your team’s logo or colors, creating a motivating environment. We can even add logos directly onto the turf for a truly custom field. Proper installation of these elements is critical. A poorly placed home plate or loose padding can detract from the practice experience and even pose a risk. We ensure every component, from the home plate to the custom padding, is installed correctly to make your equipment last longer and provide a safe, effective training space.

Winch Systems and Backstops

For backyards where space is a premium, a winch system offers incredible versatility. This feature allows you to easily raise and lower the netting, retracting the cage when it’s not in use. This frees up the area for other activities, making your yard a true multi-purpose space. A professional can add a winch system that is both easy to operate and durable. Equally important is a robust backstop designed to absorb the impact of countless pitches and foul tips. A well-built backstop protects your netting from premature wear and tear, ensuring the longevity of your investment and keeping your practice sessions safe.

Understanding Batting Cage Installation Costs

Budgeting for a batting cage involves more than just the price of the net and frame. The total investment depends on several factors, from the size and materials you choose to the amount of site preparation required. Understanding these variables will help you set a realistic budget and make informed decisions. The final price for installation can change based on the complexity of the project, your specific location on Long Island, and the custom features you decide to include. By working with an experienced team, you can get a clear and detailed estimate that breaks down all the associated costs, ensuring there are no surprises along the way.

Key Factors That Influence Price

Several key elements will shape the final cost of your batting cage installation. The overall dimensions, the type of cage (in-ground vs. above-ground), the materials selected for the frame and net, and the condition of the installation site are the primary drivers. Additionally, custom features like professional lighting, integrated pitching mounds, and personalized logos will add to the total. The complexity of the site preparation, such as leveling uneven ground or ensuring proper drainage, can also influence the price. We provide transparent quotes that account for all these factors, helping you understand exactly what you are paying for.

Cage Dimensions and Type

There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to batting cages. Your available space and training needs will determine the ideal dimensions. You might not need a full 70-foot cage for pitching and find that a 40-foot cage is perfect for hitting drills. The type of cage also plays a significant role in the cost. A permanent, in-ground cage requires more extensive site work, including digging and concrete footings, making it a larger initial investment than a temporary, above-ground model. At Gappsi, we help you design a cage that fits your property and your budget perfectly.

Site Preparation and Location

The location you choose for your batting cage is critical for both safety and functionality. The area needs to be flat, level, and have good drainage to prevent water from pooling. It’s also important to leave at least three feet of clearance between the net and any nearby structures like your house, garage, or fence to prevent damage from ricochets. If your chosen spot isn’t perfectly level, site preparation will be necessary, which can include grading and excavation. Our expertise in landscaping and masonry ensures your site is perfectly prepared for a secure and lasting installation.

Material and Feature Selections

The materials you choose have a direct impact on both the cost and the durability of your batting cage. For netting, we recommend buying the largest twine size you can afford. For example, a #42 twine net is about twice as strong as a #21 twine, meaning it will last longer and perform better over time. Similarly, the quality of the synthetic turf and the inclusion of custom features like lighting or a winch system will affect the final price. Investing in high-quality materials from the start ensures your batting cage will withstand heavy use and the elements for years to come.

Why Choose a Professional Batting Cage Installer?

While a DIY approach might seem tempting, installing a batting cage is a complex project that benefits greatly from professional expertise. A professional installer ensures that every component, from the frame poles to the tension of the net, is set up correctly for optimal safety and performance. They handle the entire process, including site evaluation, ground preparation, and assembly, which saves you time and prevents costly mistakes. Most importantly, working with a professional team gives you peace of mind. Their workers are typically bonded and insured, meaning you are protected from any liability during the construction process, a guarantee you don’t get when you do it yourself.

The Importance of Expert Installation

Proper installation is the foundation of a safe and long-lasting batting cage. An expert installer understands the specific requirements for securing the frame, whether it’s setting poles in concrete for an in-ground cage or ensuring an above-ground model is stable. They know how to hang the netting with the correct tension to prevent dangerous ricochets and ensure its longevity. Professionals also manage the crucial site preparation, ensuring the ground is level and drains properly. This expertise prevents common issues like sagging nets, unstable frames, and premature wear, ultimately protecting your investment and creating a better practice experience for every player who steps inside.

Long-Term Care for Your Batting Cage

Your batting cage is an investment in your family’s athletic development and enjoyment, and proper care will ensure it lasts for years. Regular maintenance helps keep the structure safe, functional, and looking its best. This includes inspecting the net for wear and tear, checking the stability of the frame, and keeping the turf clean and free of debris. Addressing small issues before they become big problems is the key to maximizing the lifespan of your cage. At Gappsi, our relationship with you doesn’t end once the installation is complete; we are here to help you care for your investment over the long term.

Maintenance and Repair Services

Even the most durable batting cages require occasional upkeep. Weather, frequent use, and time can all take a toll. We offer comprehensive maintenance and repair services to keep your cage in top form. Whether you need a small patch in the netting, a frame adjustment, or a thorough cleaning of the turf, our team is ready to help. We can also provide maintenance for existing batting cages, even if we didn’t install them. Regular professional check-ups can identify potential issues early, saving you from more costly repairs down the road and ensuring your practice space remains safe for everyone.

Netting Replacement

The netting is the most critical component of your batting cage, and it also endures the most wear. Over time, exposure to UV rays and the constant impact of balls will cause the material to degrade. Inspecting your net regularly for holes, tears, or thinning areas is essential for safety. When it’s time for a replacement, choosing the right net and ensuring it’s installed correctly is vital for performance and longevity. Proper installation will make your equipment last longer and provide a better practice experience. We can help you select a high-quality replacement net and install it with the proper tension for continued safety and performance.

Check out Artificial Turf & Synthetic Lawn Options

Artificial turf usually stands up to daily, continuous use for at least 8-10 years, with many installations lasting as long as 15 years. Artificial turf is resilient, and durable, and protects the flooring or ground in the cage from wear and damage. It requires much less maintenance than actual turf and holds up better to continued use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I decide between an in-ground and an above-ground batting cage? The best choice really depends on how you plan to use the space. If you need a permanent, dedicated training area for consistent, long-term use, an in-ground cage is the way to go. It’s a more durable, stable solution built to withstand years of practice and weather. On the other hand, if you need flexibility, like for a weekend event or a backyard that serves multiple purposes, a temporary, above-ground cage is a great option because it can be set up and taken down as needed.

What kind of maintenance does a batting cage require? To keep your batting cage safe and functional for years, some simple, regular maintenance is key. You’ll want to periodically inspect the netting for any holes or thinning spots, especially after heavy use or a storm. It’s also a good idea to check the frame to ensure it remains stable and secure. If you have synthetic turf, keeping it clear of leaves and debris will help it last longer. Addressing small issues early prevents them from becoming bigger, more expensive problems.

Can I get a batting cage if my yard isn’t perfectly flat? Yes, you absolutely can. While a flat, level surface is ideal, it’s not a dealbreaker. A key part of a professional installation is site preparation. Our team can handle grading and excavation to create a perfectly level base for your cage. This ensures proper drainage and a stable foundation, which are crucial for the safety and longevity of the structure.

How much space do I really need for a batting cage? You might need less space than you think. While a full-length 70-foot cage is great for live pitching practice, a shorter 40-foot cage can be perfect for hitting drills and tee work. The most important consideration is safety clearance. We recommend leaving at least three feet of open space around the cage to prevent balls from ricocheting off nearby structures like your house, a fence, or a shed.

What’s the difference between an outdoor and an indoor batting cage setup? The main difference is year-round accessibility. An outdoor cage is a fantastic addition to your yard for seasonal training, while an indoor cage, often in a basement or garage, allows for practice regardless of the weather. Indoor solutions, like retractable ceiling cages or wall-mounted systems, are designed to maximize your space, allowing a room to have multiple functions without permanently sacrificing the area for training.

Key Takeaways

  • Define Your Needs Before Building: First, determine the cage’s primary use to choose between a temporary above-ground model or a permanent in-ground structure. Next, measure your available area to select the right size, leaving at least three feet of clearance from structures for safety.
  • Invest in Quality Materials for Durability: The longevity of your batting cage depends heavily on its components. Selecting a thicker twine net (like a #42) and durable synthetic turf ensures your setup can handle frequent use and weather, ultimately protecting your investment.
  • Professional Installation is Key for Safety: Hiring an expert installer guarantees correct site preparation, secure frame anchoring, and proper net tension, which are all vital for safety and performance. An experienced, insured team provides peace of mind and a high-quality result that lasts.
