Does your backyard and pool need an update?  It might be time to resurface your pool or change the pavers to what you always wanted.  Resurfacing your pool can repair problems like cracks and wearing, while also enhancing and updating your pool’s appearance. Now that the season is changing to Fall and the Summer fun is ending it is the perfect time to plan for next year.  Your pool area might be out of sight and out of mind as the temps gradually get lower.  Maintain it now so you don’t cut into your swim time later on.

To keep your pool in top shape and working properly, resurfacing is a must. But, if you’re unsure if your pool needs resurfacing, there are a few signs to look for.

What Is Pool Resurfacing?

Are you seeing cracks and staining in your swimming pool? If so resurfacing is a great solution to correct those issues.  The kind of surface your pool has will determine how it will be resurfaced, but the process is generally the same. Resurfacing consists of taking off a pool’s top surface layer, replacing it with a new one, and then applying a new sealant.

The goal of resurfacing is to improve both the look and lifespan of your pool, restoring it to its former glory.  Resurfacing is more than just a way to repair and maintain your pool: It also gives you the opportunity to transform and enhance the way your pool looks.

When Should You Resurface Your Pool?

Gappsi recommends resurfacing your pool every 10 to 15 years.  Your pool’s size and shape will impact how long it will take to resurface but expect a project to last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.

Gunite Pool Renovation With Marble Pavers Muttontown, NY (3)Muttontown Gunite Pool Renovation With Marble Pavers Pool Deck & Patio

Gappsi completed this gunite pool renovation in Muttontown NY located in Nassau County on Long Island. The pool was totally renovated as well as the patio. We used marble pavers selected from the Gappsi Natural Stone Collection. For the patio, we used the French pattern and two-inch thick coping for the swimming pool. Our team installed ceramic tiles under the coping in the water line of the pool. The pool plaster consists of Diamond Brite Super Blue. We also installed tile markers on the edge of the steps and then extended the pool.  We extended the pool by building a bench incorporated into the semi-round steps. Additionally, we added an eight-foot round spa on the outside of the pool spilling into the pool.

The new spa installed was part of the pool modification and upgrade project. Gappsi custom cut the copings to match the patio and veneered walls with mocha travertine four-inch veneers split face and tumbled. The spa spills over into the pool and it can also work on its own, keeping the water within the spa and heating it over 100 degrees! This is the latest gunite pool renovation completed by Gappsi with a new patio layout and installation of marble pavers.

Timelessness Of Travertine Pavers

Timelessness-Of-Travertine-Pavers-Sands-Point-NY1The timelessness of travertine pavers makes them worth it. A travertine paver pool deck offers a range of benefits. The benefits include aesthetic appeal, slip resistance, heat reflectivity, durability, and natural drainage.

Although some trends can come and go, others stay around for the long term. Despite the abundance of choices available regarding tiles, one of the most popular has always been the travertine tile.

The characteristic weathered look of this natural stone adds warmth to any space. While you may often see it featured as flooring for patios and pool surrounds.  This durable stone is the perfect material to install throughout your home’s interior and exterior. Install it as a kitchen backsplash, living room flooring, or fireplace feature.

Durable and Cost-Effective Travertine Pavers

Although many would like to work with an infinite budget, this is rarely the case. Those wanting to make a difference to their home or business can always rely on travertine regarding value for money.

Travertine is an extremely durable stone.  These pavers offer a beautifully varied natural look, with colours ranging from a light Ivory and Walnut to a rich Beige and Cream hue.  This beautiful sedimentary rock is characterized by its natural surface which is full of pits and voids.  In addition to its unique lines and patterns. It is this tumbled finish that provides a non-slip surface.  When combined with their incredible heat resistance, our quality travertine pavers become the ultimate outdoor solution.  It is both slip resistant and cool underfoot. This makes them especially popular around pools and spas.

It is important to note that the main attraction of natural stone is the unique design of each individual piece.  There are no two pieces of natural stone are identical.

Timelessness-Of-Travertine-Pavers-Sands-Point-NY2Should Travertine Pavers Be Sealed?

Travertine is known for its durability and ruggedness as a natural stone.  Even the toughest materials need TLC. Take good care of your outdoor travertine tile by sealing it every one to two years to keep it protected from damage and looking fresh.

There are three main types of sealers for travertine the type of sealer you choose really depends on the look you want to achieve:

  1. Enhancing Stone Sealers – Enhancing stone sealers penetrate into travertine and enhance the natural colors found in the stone while protecting it from staining and acid discoloration that can easily occur in this calcium-rich stone. Enhancing sealers are a great way to refresh older pavers, or bring out vibrant colors in travertine.
  2. Impregnating Sealers – Impregnating sealers are very similar to enhancing sealers, but they can deposit solid particles into the pores of stone while preventing water, dirt, and oil from penetrating the surface of your tile.  This is a great choice for hardscaping.
  3. Topical Sealers Glossy Finish – Topical Glossy Sealers give your travertine a lustrous, gleaming appearance while sealing out oil and grease that can stain and discolor porous travertine tile.  Glossy sealers also prevent the color of your tile from fading.  Protect your investment by sealing your stone regularly, and researching the best sealant for your tile.

An automatic swimming pool cover is hands down the best option to protect young children from the hazards of open water but also offers you so much more. Pools equipped with an automatic pool cover are clearer, warmer, and simply more efficient than one without. In fact, the initial cost of the cover is recouped through energy savings and chemical retention.

Whether it’s a small, medium, or large in-ground pool, our automatic safety covers are safe, reliable, and can be adapted to fit ANY shape or size.

Walnut Travertine Backyard Patio Complete Design By Gappsi

Gappsi used walnut travertine in this residence located on Long Island in Sands Point NY. We used this color travertine throughout the entrance way starting with the front entrance stairway.  We continued with the copings, treads, pavers for the platforms, and veneers for the rises were all in walnut travertine.

Gappsi extended the columns for the light features to illuminate the backyard.  On the home, the house veneers were all split-face travertine veneers. The entrance to the backyard was also all in a travertine walnut color combination of beige browns and whites.

Timelessness-Of-Travertine-Pavers-Sands-Point-NY3The stairway to the backyard leads to the synthetic wood deck. The backyard patio sitting areas, and pavilion area were all in walnut travertine. The pavilion was custom built, finished with wood planks installed on the ceiling, and the outdoor kitchen was built in u shape with DCS appliances. The pool area is very large and includes a fireplace.

Gappsi built the gunite pool that is equipped with an automatic swimming pool cover. The landscape included a natural stone waterfall with sitting walls. This project was built by Gappsi approximately 12 years ago. Still, in great shape, we recently cleaned and sealed all the travertine with a natural clear sealer that does not enhance or change the color of the stones but prevents them from absorbing water. This is the latest Gappsi Project in Sands Point NY.

Pool Bubbler Design Ideas, Inspiration & Considerations.

Pool bubblers are a popular water feature for many pool owners, because of the tranquility and peace created by the water.  It also helps the Pool Bubbletrs are attractive to look at too!  We see a request for pool bubblers also when there is a spa attached to the pool. Bubblers are small fountains that create water columns in shallow areas of your pool. They are commonly used on shallow shelves, spas, and pool steps. Below, I’ll walk through some of the main benefits and watch-outs of pool bubblers.

Main Benefits

Outside of being pretty to look at, bubblers provide a few additional benefits for your pool.

  • Sound Blocking – Bubblers can be a great sound blocker for noisy neighbors or a busy street in front of your house. The rush of the water has a wonderful calming effect, much like a waterfall or spillover.
  • Cooling Down Water – Bubblers and many other water features are also great for cooling down your pool water. The rush of the water out of the column keeps your pool water moving, introducing oxygen into your water and reducing the temperature. This is a blessing for those shallow pool areas if you live in a hot climate. Bubblers can help keep that water cool and enjoyable.
  • Aesthetics – When it comes to design, the surrounding environment of your pool is almost as important as the pool itself. If you have a lot of natural landscaping around your pool, bubblers can be a great way to keep that zen feeling that your trees and other greenery help establish.

Bubblers don’t really come in too many varieties. You can have different water stream widths and color lighting or automation.

Pros of a Gunite Swimming Pool | Construction and Renovation

Gunite Swimming Pool
A customized gunite swimming pool by Gappsi

Refreshing juices by the poolside are the highlight of summer. If you want to construct or renovate a pool on your premises, our Gappsi Home Improvement Company team can help. We can build pools from materials like gunite, concrete, fiberglass, and more. Gunite pools are quite common these days, so this blog will explain everything about a gunite swimming pool and its construction in Nassau and Suffolk County.

What is Gunite?

In simple words, gunite is a form of concrete.

More precisely, it is a gooey material consisting of water, sand, and cement. Builders spray layers of this material on vertical or horizontal frameworks with a compressed air gun or a high-pressure hose. Once the gooey liquid dries, it turns into a thick, rock-hard structure. Builders usually use gunite to construct pools, roads, and tunnels.

Why is gunite better than standard concrete?

The reason is simple; standard concrete is denser than gunite and solidifies quickly after application, making it difficult to handle. Also, gunite structures made through spraying with a hose or gun don’t develop or sustain any seams like traditionally-poured concrete. Gappsi can build a top-quality gunite swimming pool in your courtyard to make your summer super fun.

Advantages of a Gunite Swimming Pool

Durability

Gunite’s excellent durability makes it a worthy choice for the construction of residential and commercial swimming pools.

Firstly, gunite swimming pools don’t require wooden structures to set their shape. Instead, the structure of gunite is steel-reinforced. This makes the construction of gunite pools simpler and more robust than the standard concrete ones. They can withstand high stress and pressure from external forces and last longer due to their high tensile strength.

Another reason a gunite swimming pool lasts longer is the shifting ground phenomenon.

The soil below and around the pool doesn’t stay still. It keeps shifting due to factors like water intrusion, compaction, freezing, thawing, or drought. Hence, the pool shell should be made from a material that is tough and solid but expands and contracts without cracking. Gunite has this dual quality that makes it an excellent choice for building long-lasting pool structures.

Versatility

Another great quality of gunite is its versatility. Our professional masons and contractors can customize your pool in any shape, depth, and size you want. You can enjoy your personal aquatic sanctuary built according to your lifestyle, budget, and style preferences.

A gunite swimming pool can also fit well in any landscape and space. You can choose from an endless list of possible designs, including ones with sharp angles, smooth curves, or both. Moreover, there are multiple options for the pool’s finishing, including plasters, pebbles, tiles, and glass.

Gunite also allows you to install different design amenities in the pool that match your landscape and raise the pool’s overall appeal. Some cool design amenities include water benches, tanning ledges, and barstools. You can also add spas and waterfalls for a natural vibe.

Other alternatives to a gunite swimming pool include standard concrete, vinyl, and fiberglass ones. Although pool construction and renovation with these materials are quicker and cheaper, they offer limited design options compared to gunite. In short, gunite pools are a perfect fusion of fun, fitness, comfort, and visual appeal.

Easy Maintenance

Gunite pools are worth every buck you spend on their construction and renovation. This is because they don’t need relatively extensive repairs and maintenance like pools of other materials.

Basically, a gunite swimming pool retains its shape over a long time because of its steep-supported framework, unlike pools of fiberglass, vinyl, and other materials.

However, you must keep it clean and shiny with the right chemicals to prevent algae and keep its durability intact. You may also have to refinish the pool after a while if it starts showing signs of wear.

Important Considerations for Gunite Pools

●       Be careful with Pool Draining

Gunite can expand and contract due to several environmental factors. A high groundwater table due to improper draining can raise the pool off the ground and cause considerable damage. Hence, you must learn the right way to drain the pool.

●       Scrub, Clean, and Add Chemicals

Gunite’s porous nature makes it prone to algae growth. You must scrub, brush, and use additional chemicals to keep the pool clean and prevent algae growth.

The pool shell’s alkaline pH level regularly raises the water’s pH levels. This requires you to neutralize the water’s pH levels by adding acids.

●       Construction May Take Time

Builders and masonry contractors can usually build a gunite swimming pool from scratch within approximately 2 to 3 months or even more.

Gunite Pool Construction
A backyard gunite swimming pool by Gappsi

Construction of a Gunite Swimming Pool in Nassau and Suffolk County

The first step in gunite pool construction is digging the hole for the pool.

After that, builders install iron and steel bar framework around the pool’s perimeter. The core purpose of this grid-like framework is to reinforce the pool’s structure. This iron framework is suspended in the air on concrete blocks to prevent it from touching the soil, leaving enough space to fill in fresh gunite at the bottom surface.

Then comes the time to spray gunite with high pressure and velocity around and onto the iron bars. This is how builders make the pool’s dense floor and walls. After spraying gunite across the entire pool, they smooth the material and leave it to set and dry.

The next step is to add a finishing material that matches your landscape. You can opt for plaster as the finishing material because it comes in many colors. For a more extravagant or luxurious look, you can consider colored quartz, pebbles, or tiles.

The final steps include leveling and paving the ground around the pool and installing a pool coping. Pool coping separates the pool shell from the surrounding surface area and prevents the water from leaving the pool shell.

Since your pool is ready at this point, you can now ask plumbers and electrical handymen to install the water pump, any additional water features, and light fixtures.
