Custom Features for Your Gunite Pool

The true beauty of a gunite pool lies in its potential for customization. This is your chance to create a one-of-a-kind backyard feature that perfectly suits your lifestyle. Whether you envision a serene escape for relaxation or a vibrant hub for entertaining, we can incorporate custom elements to make it happen. Think beyond the basic shape and consider adding features that reflect your personality and how you want to use the space. From dramatic water features and dynamic lighting to luxurious interior finishes, the possibilities are endless. We’ll work with you to design a pool that is uniquely yours, down to the smallest detail.

Elegant Water Features

Water features add movement, sound, and a touch of elegance to any pool design. The gentle sound of a cascading waterfall can create a tranquil atmosphere, while deck jets can provide a playful and modern touch. We can design and build a variety of custom water features that integrate seamlessly with your pool and landscape. These elements turn your pool into a dynamic work of art, enhancing the sensory experience of your entire backyard and creating a stunning focal point whether you’re in the water or relaxing poolside.

Spas, Waterfalls, and Swim-Up Bars

Imagine soaking in an integrated spa after a long day or enjoying a drink without ever leaving the water. We can build custom spas that spill over into the pool, creating a beautiful visual and auditory effect. For those who love to entertain, a swim-up bar adds a resort-like feel to your backyard. Sheer descent waterfalls can create a sleek, modern curtain of water, while natural rock waterfalls offer a more rustic, organic look. These features are designed to enhance your enjoyment and make your pool the ultimate destination for relaxation and fun.

Modern Water and Lighting Systems

The right technology can completely transform your pool experience. Modern LED lighting systems offer a spectrum of colors that can be changed to suit any mood or occasion, from a peaceful blue glow to a vibrant, multi-color light show for parties. We can also install automated systems that allow you to control your pool’s features, like lighting, heating, and water jets, directly from your smartphone. These smart systems add convenience and a “wow” factor, making your pool both beautiful and easy to manage.

Saltwater System Integration

Many homeowners are choosing saltwater systems for a more comfortable and natural swimming experience. A saltwater chlorine generator converts salt into chlorine, resulting in softer-feeling water that’s gentler on your skin, eyes, and hair. These systems also provide a more consistent level of sanitization with less maintenance than traditional chlorine pools. If you’re looking for a more luxurious and lower-maintenance option, we can easily integrate a saltwater system into your new gunite pool design.

Premium Interior Finishes and Tiles

The interior finish of your pool determines the water’s color and texture, setting the overall tone for your backyard oasis. We offer a wide selection of premium finishes, from classic plaster to durable pebble aggregates that come in a variety of colors and textures. You can also choose from an extensive collection of beautiful glass and porcelain tiles for the waterline, steps, and spa. These high-quality materials not only look stunning but are also built to withstand the elements and last for years.

Unique Design Details

It’s the small details that often make the biggest impact. We believe that every element of your pool should be thoughtfully considered to create a cohesive and polished look. From the style of the coping around the pool’s edge to the design of the entry steps, we work with you to select details that complement your home’s architecture and your personal taste. These finishing touches are what distinguish a standard pool from a truly custom-designed masterpiece, and we are dedicated to getting them just right.

Grand Entrances and Custom Handrails

Make a statement with a grand entrance to your pool. We can design wide, sweeping steps or a luxurious sun shelf, also known as a tanning ledge, that provides a shallow area for lounging in the water. Custom handrails, crafted from high-quality materials, not only provide safety but also add a sophisticated design element. Whether you prefer a sleek, modern look or a more traditional style, these custom details contribute to the overall elegance and functionality of your pool design.

Designing Your Complete Backyard Retreat

A new pool is the perfect opportunity to rethink your entire outdoor living space. At Gappsi, we specialize in creating cohesive backyard retreats where the pool is just one part of a larger, integrated design. We look at the big picture, considering how the pool, patio, landscaping, and other outdoor features will work together to create a harmonious and functional environment. Our team of designers and craftsmen can handle every aspect of your project, from masonry and landscaping to outdoor structures, ensuring a seamless flow and a consistent style throughout your property.

Integrated Landscape and Masonry Design

A truly stunning pool area is one that feels connected to its surroundings. Our design process involves carefully integrating the pool with the surrounding landscape and hardscape. We can design and build beautiful stone patios, retaining walls, and walkways that complement the pool and your home. Our landscape designers will then select plantings that soften the hardscape, add color and texture, and provide privacy, creating a lush and inviting atmosphere around your new pool.

Achieving the “Hamptons Style” Aesthetic

For homeowners in Westhampton, achieving the iconic “Hamptons Style” is often a key design goal. This aesthetic is characterized by a sense of classic elegance, clean lines, and a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor living. It often features natural materials, lush green lawns, and sophisticated yet comfortable entertaining spaces. Our team has extensive experience creating this look, using a thoughtful combination of landscape and masonry design to capture that timeless, coastal charm that is synonymous with the Hamptons.

High-End Materials for Patios and Pool Decks

The material you choose for your pool deck and patio sets the stage for your entire outdoor space. We offer a curated selection of high-end materials that are both beautiful and durable enough to withstand the Long Island climate. From the classic beauty of natural stone to the modern appeal of large-format porcelain pavers, we have options to suit any style. We’ll help you select the perfect material that not only looks great but also provides a safe, non-slip surface for your poolside activities.

Pennsylvania Bluestone and Porcelain Tiles

Two of our most popular options for pool surrounds are Pennsylvania Bluestone and porcelain tiles. Bluestone offers a timeless, natural elegance with its rich blue-gray tones and is a classic choice for Hamptons-style homes. For a more contemporary look, porcelain tiles provide a sleek, uniform appearance and are incredibly durable and low-maintenance. Both materials offer a luxurious finish that will make your pool area stand out.

Custom Outdoor Structures

To complete your backyard retreat, consider adding a custom outdoor structure that enhances both the beauty and functionality of your space. These structures can provide shade, define entertaining areas, and offer convenient storage or changing space. We design and build a variety of structures that are tailored to your property and needs, ensuring they integrate perfectly with your pool and landscape design. An outdoor structure can truly transform your pool area into a full-service outdoor living room.

Pool Houses, Pavilions, and Pergolas

A pool house can offer the ultimate convenience, with features like a changing room, bathroom, kitchenette, or lounge area. For a dedicated shaded space for dining or relaxing, a pavilion provides a solid roof for protection from the sun and rain. A pergola offers a more open, airy feel, creating dappled shade that is perfect for a poolside lounge. Whatever your needs, we can create a beautiful and functional structure that extends your living space outdoors.

Our Commitment to Quality Equipment and Materials

A beautiful design is only as good as the materials and equipment used to bring it to life. At Gappsi, we are committed to using only the highest quality products in every pool we build. We believe that investing in top-tier equipment and durable materials from the start is essential for ensuring the longevity, efficiency, and safety of your pool. This commitment to quality means you can enjoy a beautiful, low-maintenance pool for many years. We don’t cut corners, because we know that the unseen components of your pool are just as important as the ones you see every day.

Top-Tier Pool Equipment

Your pool’s circulation and filtration system is its heart, and we make sure it’s strong and reliable. We install high-performance pumps, filters, and heaters from industry-leading brands known for their durability and energy efficiency. Investing in quality equipment not only ensures your water stays clean and clear but can also reduce your long-term operating costs. We’ll help you select the right equipment for the size and features of your pool, guaranteeing optimal performance and a hassle-free ownership experience.

Durable and Efficient Plumbing

Proper plumbing is critical for the performance and safety of your pool. We use high-quality, durable pipes and fittings and design our plumbing systems for maximum efficiency. This means your water circulates effectively, your chemicals are distributed evenly, and your equipment runs at its best. Our expert installation ensures a leak-free system that is built to last, preventing future problems and protecting your investment. It’s a crucial behind-the-scenes detail that we take very seriously.

A gunite swimming pool is ideal due to its incredible design and versatility. Gunite lasts most of all in-ground pools and usually has the best warranties. It doesn’t require wooden frameworks to hold the shape, so construction is more accessible than standard concrete.

Over the years, gunite swimming pools have increasingly become popular among a majority of homeowners. Gunite pools are popularly known for their maximum longevity and high versatility. Although it is a little more costly, you can build any pool design from Gunite. Therefore, consider installing a gunite pool to transform your outdoor space into a luxurious haven. Before constructing a gunite swimming pool, weigh the pros and cons of this spectacular feature. This way, it will be much easier to determine whether a gunite pool is worth the investment.

Safety First – Pool Fencing Options

Investing in a beautiful pool for your backyard and surrounding it with a not-so-chic pool fence is one of those design decisions you may regret.  Choosing an attractive and practical pool fence for your lifestyle and the guests visiting your home will save you the worry and stress of wondering if everyone is safe.

Let’s explore pool fence ideas that will transform your backyard into an oasis of safety and style. Whether you prefer the timeless elegance of wooden fencing or the modern sophistication of glass railings, this collection showcases a variety of designs that will elevate the aesthetic appeal of your pool area.

  • Steel Cable Fencing—Cable railings around pools open the view beyond your pool. Cables are thin compared to larger wood or metal pickets. The wire cables around your pool will seem to disappear, allowing you to enjoy the view, whether it’s the sunset at your beach house, sweeping mountains, or a backyard oasis.
  • Glass Fence – A glass pool fence offers an unobstructed view of your pool and yard, making it a popular choice for modern homes and homeowners who want to feel like they’re on a permanent staycation. Glass is sleek and sophisticated, providing safety without compromising style.
  • Wooden Fences – Wooden fences bring a natural, warm look to your pool area and can offer a more private space. This can be an advantage for homes surrounded by closely situated neighbors or in public view that need a little outdoor privacy. Wood can be painted or stained to match your home’s exterior, and you can choose from an array of styles, from picket fences to classic or latticed designs.
  • Aluminum Fencing – Aluminum fences are durable, lightweight, and rust-resistant, making them a low-maintenance option. You can choose from different styles and designs to find one that suits your property. Aluminum fencing is considered easy to install and can be used in a variety of ground materials.

  • Wrought iron – can be a stylish design choice for Mediterranean-style homes or traditional homes. It’s strong and protective, but it can rust. With proper maintenance, a wrought iron pool fence can last for years.
  • Steel Fences—Steel is a highly durable fence material that can withstand harsh weather conditions. However, periodic applications of rust-resistant coating may be needed to avoid corrosion, especially in high-humidity areas. Steel cable railing fences are perfect for contemporary homes.
  • Vinyl Fences – You can choose low-maintenance vinyl or PVC fences in various designs and colors. Vinyl fences are cost-effective and weather-resistant.
  • Mesh Fences—Mesh fences are a low-cost option that is ideal if good visibility of the splash zone is a priority. They’re highly durable yet easy to install and remove, making them suitable as a temporary option for those who only need a pool fence during certain times of the year due to seasonal changes.
  • Composite Fences—Composite fences are usually made of vinyl, wood flour, and recycled plastics, making them a green choice that’s good for the planet and minimizes environmental impact. They’re a versatile option that combines the look of wood with the durability of synthetic materials.

gunite-swimming-pool-dune-road-westhampton-ny1Pool Pilings to Support Infrastructure

Will your pool require pilings, and what does this imply? Some swimming pools need a few pilings to support the infrastructure, while others need a great deal. It will all depend on the weight that the concrete structure will withstand, your pool’s size, and the soil.  Pools on piling can include steel, wood, or concrete cast in place or driven into the ground. Some pools will require helical piles created from steel and drilled into the ground with an auger. Concrete piling for pools can often be poured and is usually inexpensive. The kind of pool on pilings needed is the engineers’ soil boring test report. It is frequently based on the pool design and soil composition.

Gunite Swimming Pool Dune Road in Westhampton, NY

Gappsi recently built this gunite swimming pool on pilings on Dune Road in Westhampton, N.Y. Our team built a bench on one side of the pool facing the ocean with corner stairs. The pool coping we installed was shot-blasted black sandstone coping and honed.

The pool finish is black-dyed marble dusting. The surrounding pool deck is Ipe wood in 3-inch strips. Ipe wood decking is the gold standard for all hardwoods. Ipe is so great that it is naturally fire and bug-resistant. The railing is a see-through steel cable used so as not to block the view of the water across. This is the latest project built by Gappsi on Dune Road in Westhampton, NY.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a gunite pool such a good fit for a Westhampton home? Gunite is the perfect material for capturing that classic, elegant Hamptons style because it offers complete design freedom. Unlike pre-molded pools, gunite allows us to create any shape you can imagine, from a timeless rectangle to a freeform lagoon that blends naturally with your landscape. This flexibility means we can tailor the pool to your property’s specific layout and your home’s architecture, ensuring it looks like a seamless, integrated part of your backyard retreat.

How long does it take to build a custom gunite pool? While every project is unique, we pride ourselves on creating efficient and realistic timelines. A typical gunite pool construction involves several stages, including excavation, plumbing, steel reinforcement, gunite application, and finishing touches like tile and plaster. We manage every step carefully and keep you informed along the way. Our extensive experience in the area helps us anticipate local requirements and keep the project moving smoothly, so you can start enjoying your pool as soon as possible.

Can you help design the area around the pool, like the patio and landscaping? Absolutely. We specialize in creating complete, cohesive backyard environments, not just installing pools. Our team includes expert landscape and masonry designers who will work with you to plan the perfect patio, walkways, and plantings. We can build everything from a classic Pennsylvania Bluestone deck to a modern porcelain tile surround, and even add structures like a pool house or pavilion to create a fully functional outdoor living space.

My current pool looks old and tired. What are my options? You have several great options, and we can help you decide which is best. We can completely renovate your existing gunite pool by updating the interior finish, replacing the tile, and adding modern features like new lighting or a spa. This can make it feel brand new. If you have an old vinyl liner pool, we also specialize in converting them to gunite, which gives you a much more durable, beautiful, and long-lasting result.

What are some of the most popular custom features people are adding to their pools? Many of our clients are adding features that turn their pool into a true destination for relaxation and entertainment. Integrated spas are incredibly popular, as are elegant water features like sheer descent waterfalls that create a soothing sound. For a resort-like feel, swim-up bars are a fantastic addition. We also install modern LED lighting systems that can change color with the touch of a button and saltwater systems for softer, gentler water.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose gunite for ultimate design freedom: This construction method allows for any custom shape, size, or integrated feature like a spa or waterfall, ensuring your pool is truly one-of-a-kind.
  • Think beyond the pool itself: A cohesive backyard retreat integrates the pool design with the surrounding patio, landscaping, and outdoor structures to create a seamless and functional living space.
  • Prioritize local experience for a smoother project: A builder with deep roots in Westhampton understands the area’s unique building codes and coastal environment, which prevents delays and ensures your pool is built to last.

Commercial Gunite Swimming Pool Renovation | Long Island NY

View Gappsi’s YouTube Channel for Videos on Commercial Gunite Swimming Pool Renovation | Long Island, N.Y.

Commercial gunite swimming pool renovation can include resurfacing, repairs, and design changes. When it comes to swimming pool gunite renovations, Gappsi has you covered. Gunite, also known as shotcrete, is popular in swimming pools due to its durability and longevity. Over time, however, your gunite pool may begin to crack or leak and show signs of wear. Our team is experienced in commercial gunite swimming pool renovation, and we use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to ensure that your pool is restored to its former glory.

In our recent project at the Engineer Country Club in Glen Head, N.Y., we remodeled the commercial gunite swimming pool.  We removed some of the old surfaces that were in the pool. Initially, the Engineers Club had to replace the marble dust finish with a custom liner because of a pool leak. They continued to have issues with the pool, so our team removed the liner, and we are fixing the old gunite shell.  The loose material and the watered cement were removed. Then, the entire pool was coated, and the new shotcrete was added.

commercial-gunite-swimming-pool-renovation-long-island-ny-1Existing swimming pool structures often require minor and major repairs and extensive remodeling. However, removing and replacing portions of a pool structure is perfectly acceptable.

Here are Some Ways to Fix a Commerical Gunite Swimming Pool:

  • Patch small cracks – Small cracks and minor damage can be fixed with pool patching materials.
  • Resurface the pool
  • Rehabilitate the pool – A gunite rehab project can include removing concrete, replumbing, adding new features, redoing the gunite shell, and plastering.

We applied the pool’s finish, which consists of white quartz. A pool finish made of white quartz combines white Portland cement, crushed quartz, and other additives. The quartz gives the pool a textured surface and a range of colors. Quartz pool finishes are known for their durability, resistance to staining, and aesthetic appeal.

commercial-gunite-swimming-pool-renovation-long-island-ny-2Which Pool Surface is Suitable for You?

The surface of your pool can change its fundamental look. If you are bored by your pool or its surface and could use repairs, consider hiring a Gappsi pool service to resurface it. Here are three different types of pool finishes that can improve the look of your whole backyard.

  • Plaster – has been one of the most used pool finishes since the 1960s. This surface is hard yet smooth and appears white. Plaster can make your pool water appear bright, clean, and light blue. It is also considered one of the most affordable pool resurfacing methods.
  • Pebble—Pebble pool surfaces begin with a layer of specially formulated cement. This cement contains small pebbles and stones, contributing to a more natural aesthetic for your backyard. Pebbles and stones come in various colors, so you can choose something that matches your patio. The texture of the pool is rougher than plaster and quartz finishes and may be rough on children’s feet and hard on automatic vacuum systems.
  • Quartz—Quartz pool finishes combine quartz aggregate with polymer-modified cement, technically making them a plaster surface. Quartz surfaces are, in many ways, the best of plaster and pebble finishes.

Adding a Swim Lane to a Gunite Pool

A swim lane is a designated area in a pool for swimmers to swim in without crossing paths with other swimmers. Floating lane ropes and markings on the bottom of the pool mark swim lanes. Gappsi added a swim lane to the existing pool at the Engineers Club. In addition, we used tile on the floor of the swim lane to differentiate it. Adding a swim lane is perfect for providing an environment for those who want to work on their fitness, build stamina, or improve their swimming times.

Installing Tile Over Gunite/Shotcrete

Our team installed tiles on the steps and divided the deep part of the pool with a tile line as well.  Gunite or shotcrete pools offer unmatched flexibility when it comes to design and tile options. These pools can be fully or partially tiled, giving you endless possibilities to create a truly unique and personalized oasis. Whether you prefer a simple, elegant look or a more elaborate, intricate design, concrete pools allow you to bring your vision to life with complete customization.

commercial-gunite-swimming-pool-renovation-long-island-ny-3What’s the Best Tile for a Pool?

When tiling your pool, there are several areas where tile can be applied to make it more functional and beautiful. Glass and ceramics are good pool tile materials, and glass tile is water—and scratch-resistant. It can be used in hot pools to retain the durability of ceramic tile and the delicate translucence of glass. In pool construction, glazed tile is a strong barrier against chemical damage. Ceramic tile is also good for pool installations if the glaze is acid-resistant.

  • Waterline Tile

Waterline tile is installed at the water’s surface level, serving decorative and functional purposes. It adds a stylish touch to your pool and helps conceal water level fluctuations. Additionally, it protects the pool structure from the damaging effects of sun exposure, chemicals, and temperature changes, making it a practical and aesthetic enhancement for any pool.

  • Accent Tile

Trim tile creates a clean edge around steps, benches, and other pool features. It finishes off your pool and can be the same as or different from the main pool tile.

  • Spotters

Spotters are small, often colorful tiles used to indicate depth changes or highlight specific areas in the pool. While primarily serving as essential safety features, they also add a touch of visual interest, enhancing the overall design of your pool tile layout.

commercial-gunite-swimming-pool-renovation-long-island-ny-4Choosing the right tile for your pool involves many factors, including the pool type, style, and budget. Whether you choose porcelain, glass, or stone tile, your pool tile can turn your backyard or country club into a paradise.

The Essential Guide to a Gunite Pool in Muttontown

Creating a true backyard retreat is about more than just adding water. It’s about designing a cohesive space where the pool, patio, and plantings work together in harmony. This is where the unique advantages of a gunite pool really shine. Because they are custom-built on-site, gunite pools can be designed to flow seamlessly with your home’s architecture and outdoor living areas. A recent gunite pool Muttontown project we designed is a perfect example of this integrated approach. In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about gunite, from its incredible design flexibility to the construction process, helping you plan your perfect backyard oasis.

Gunite Pool Renovation With Marble Pavers Muttontown, NY (1)Deciding to complete a gunite pool renovation with marble pavers comes with a range of incredible benefits for your home. From increased home value to the joy of creating your own space, it’s a decision that you won’t soon forget.

Does your backyard and pool need an update?  It might be time to resurface your pool or change the pavers to what you always wanted.  Resurfacing your pool can repair problems like cracks and wearing, while also enhancing and updating your pool’s appearance. Now that the season is changing to Fall and the Summer fun is ending it is the perfect time to plan for next year.  Your pool area might be out of sight and out of mind as the temps gradually get lower.  Maintain it now so you don’t cut into your swim time later on.

To keep your pool in top shape and working properly, resurfacing is a must. But, if you’re unsure if your pool needs resurfacing, there are a few signs to look for.

What Is Pool Resurfacing?

Are you seeing cracks and staining in your swimming pool? If so resurfacing is a great solution to correct those issues.  The kind of surface your pool has will determine how it will be resurfaced, but the process is generally the same. Resurfacing consists of taking off a pool’s top surface layer, replacing it with a new one, and then applying a new sealant.

The goal of resurfacing is to improve both the look and lifespan of your pool, restoring it to its former glory.  Resurfacing is more than just a way to repair and maintain your pool: It also gives you the opportunity to transform and enhance the way your pool looks.

When Should You Resurface Your Pool?

Gappsi recommends resurfacing your pool every 10 to 15 years.  Your pool’s size and shape will impact how long it will take to resurface but expect a project to last anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.

Gunite Pool Renovation With Marble Pavers Muttontown, NY (2)Marble Patio Pavers

Now that you have decided to upgrade your gunite swimming pool why not upgrade your patio area as well?  If you’re thinking about upgrading your outdoor living space by installing pavers and making it a place for family gatherings, entertaining friends, or just enjoying and reading a book. You’re at the right place with Gappsi. We are marble flooring pros and help you with your decision to enhance your patio.

Marble is made to stand the test of time.  This high-density stone also withstands heavy loads; thus is the perfect choice for traffic areas like backyards and patios.  Marble pavers do come with a price tag but they sure are worth it. Their elegance and beautycannot be compared to other materials used for making pool decks. Installing them can dramatically elevate the appearance of your pool area and even boost the value of your property overall.

Marble pavers are chosen often for a pool deck and patio because of their high heat resistance.  Pretty cool, right? (Yes, irony intended.)  During the summer months, it can get pretty hot here on Long Island, marble pavers are an excellent choice for pool surrounds because when installed, they will stay cool underfoot.  This is a very important consideration when choosing pool pavers.  Not only from the perspective of enjoying the pool surroundings but because it’s a safer choice.  This is an important consideration if you have children and the elderly living with you.

Gunite Pool Renovation With Marble Pavers Muttontown, NY (3)Muttontown Gunite Pool Renovation With Marble Pavers Pool Deck & Patio

Gappsi completed this gunite pool renovation in Muttontown NY located in Nassau County on Long Island. The pool was totally renovated as well as the patio. We used marble pavers selected from the Gappsi Natural Stone Collection. For the patio, we used the French pattern and two-inch thick coping for the swimming pool. Our team installed ceramic tiles under the coping in the water line of the pool. The pool plaster consists of Diamond Brite Super Blue. We also installed tile markers on the edge of the steps and then extended the pool.  We extended the pool by building a bench incorporated into the semi-round steps. Additionally, we added an eight-foot round spa on the outside of the pool spilling into the pool.

The new spa installed was part of the pool modification and upgrade project. Gappsi custom cut the copings to match the patio and veneered walls with mocha travertine four-inch veneers split face and tumbled. The spa spills over into the pool and it can also work on its own, keeping the water within the spa and heating it over 100 degrees! This is the latest gunite pool renovation completed by Gappsi with a new patio layout and installation of marble pavers.

What is a Gunite Pool?

If you’re dreaming of a backyard pool that’s uniquely yours, you’ve likely come across the term “gunite.” So, what exactly is it? A gunite pool is a type of inground swimming pool built with a steel-reinforced concrete framework. Unlike other pool types that use pre-formed shells, a gunite pool is built entirely on-site, giving you complete control over the shape, size, and design. The process involves spraying a mixture of sand, cement, and water over a rebar frame, creating a dense and incredibly durable single-piece shell. This method allows for a level of customization that’s hard to match, making it the top choice for homeowners who want a pool that perfectly complements their landscape and lifestyle.

The real beauty of a gunite pool lies in its versatility. Because it’s a custom build from the ground up, you can incorporate features like built-in benches, tanning ledges, waterfalls, and attached spas seamlessly into the design. The interior finish can also be tailored to your taste, with options ranging from classic plaster to vibrant pebble aggregates or elegant glass tiles. This flexibility ensures your new swimming pool isn’t just a place to swim, but a true centerpiece for your outdoor living space. It’s a structure built to last, offering a permanent and valuable addition to your Long Island home.

Composition and Construction Process

Building a gunite pool is a fascinating process that blends raw strength with detailed craftsmanship. It all starts with excavation, where your backyard is carefully dug out to match the exact specifications of your pool design. Next, a grid of steel reinforcement bars, or rebar, is meticulously placed to form the pool’s skeleton. This steel cage provides the immense structural integrity that gunite pools are known for. Plumbers also come in at this stage to install the necessary pipes and drains before the concrete is applied. This foundational work is critical for ensuring the pool’s longevity and proper function for years to come.

Once the rebar and plumbing are in place, the magic happens. A specialized crew uses a high-pressure hose to spray the gunite mixture—a dry blend of sand and cement that mixes with water at the nozzle—directly onto the steel frame. This application method creates a dense, solid structure with superior strength. After the gunite shell is sprayed, it needs to cure for several weeks, a process that involves keeping it hydrated to allow it to reach maximum hardness. Finally, a waterproof interior finish, like plaster or pebble aggregate, is applied to create a smooth, beautiful surface, and your custom pool is ready to be filled.

Gunite vs. Shotcrete

When exploring concrete pools, you might also hear the term “shotcrete.” While gunite and shotcrete are often used interchangeably, they refer to slightly different application processes. The key distinction lies in how the concrete mix is prepared. Gunite uses a dry mix of sand and cement, with water added at the spray nozzle just before application. This gives the installer precise control over the water-to-cement ratio, which can result in a stronger, denser final product when handled by a skilled technician. This control is a major reason why many high-end pool builders prefer the gunite method for its consistency and strength.

Shotcrete, on the other hand, uses a wet mix that is prepared at the plant before being transported to the job site. This pre-mixed concrete is then pumped through a hose and sprayed onto the rebar frame. While shotcrete can be applied more quickly, the gunite process is often favored for its flexibility and the superior bond it creates. For homeowners, the most important takeaway is that both methods can create a durable, long-lasting pool. The ultimate quality depends less on the specific method and more on the expertise and experience of the company you hire to build your custom pool.

Typical Construction Timeline

Patience is key when building a custom gunite pool, as the process is more involved than dropping a pre-made shell into the ground. From the initial design consultation to the first cannonball, you can generally expect the construction to take between 8 and 12 weeks. This timeline can vary based on factors like the complexity of the design, weather conditions, and how quickly your local municipality processes permits. The first phase involves finalizing your design, securing the necessary permits, and excavating the site, which can take a couple of weeks alone before any real building begins.

The gunite application itself is usually completed in a single day, but the crucial curing phase that follows takes up the most time. The concrete shell needs to cure for about 28 days to achieve its full strength, during which it must be regularly watered down. Once cured, the final steps move more quickly. This includes installing the tile and coping around the pool’s edge, applying the interior plaster finish, and completing the final plumbing and electrical work for the filtration system. While it seems like a long wait, the result is a durable, beautiful pool built to last for decades.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Gunite Pools

Choosing the right type of pool is a big decision, and gunite pools come with a distinct set of pros and cons. On the plus side, their biggest advantage is unparalleled design flexibility. You aren’t limited to standard shapes or sizes; if you can dream it, a skilled builder can create it. This makes gunite ideal for fitting pools into tricky backyards or for creating one-of-a-kind designs with integrated features. They are also incredibly durable. The steel-reinforced concrete shell is built to withstand ground movement and harsh weather, offering a lifespan that can exceed 50 years with proper care. This longevity often translates into a significant increase in your home’s value.

However, there are some disadvantages to consider. The initial cost of a gunite pool is typically higher than that of fiberglass or vinyl liner pools due to the custom labor and materials involved. The construction process is also longer, often taking several months from start to finish. Maintenance can be more intensive as well; the porous nature of plaster finishes can make them more susceptible to algae growth and staining if not cared for properly. Understanding both sides of the coin will help you make an informed decision that aligns with your budget, timeline, and long-term vision for your backyard.

Advantages of Choosing Gunite

When you invest in a gunite pool, you’re choosing a premium product known for its strength and beauty. The primary advantage that draws homeowners to gunite is the limitless potential for customization. You have complete freedom to design a pool that fits your backyard’s unique contours and your personal aesthetic. Whether you envision a sleek, modern lap pool, a naturalistic lagoon with rock features, or a family-friendly design with a shallow tanning ledge, gunite can make it happen. This flexibility extends to features like built-in spas, waterfalls, and custom steps, which can be integrated directly into the pool’s structure for a seamless, high-end look.

Beyond aesthetics, gunite pools are celebrated for their incredible durability. The monolithic shell, formed by spraying concrete over a steel grid, is exceptionally strong and built to last a lifetime. This robust construction makes them a wise long-term investment for your property, capable of withstanding Long Island’s changing seasons. A well-designed gunite pool not only provides endless enjoyment for your family but can also significantly increase your home’s resale value. It transforms your backyard into a luxurious retreat, making your home more attractive to potential buyers should you ever decide to sell.

Exceptional Durability and Longevity

One of the most compelling reasons to choose a gunite pool is its remarkable durability. These pools are built like fortresses, with a core of steel rebar encased in thick, high-strength concrete. This construction method creates a monolithic shell that can withstand ground shifts and the freeze-thaw cycles we experience here on Long Island without cracking or failing. With proper maintenance, a gunite pool can easily last for 50 years or more, making it a permanent fixture of your home. This is a stark contrast to vinyl liner pools, which require liner replacements every 5 to 10 years.

Ultimate Design Flexibility

If you have a specific vision for your backyard, gunite is the way to go. The design possibilities are virtually endless because the pool is built from scratch on-site. You can choose any shape, size, or depth you desire, allowing you to create a pool that perfectly fits your space and style. This flexibility also means you can incorporate custom features like swim-up bars, underwater benches, and dramatic water features that flow organically from the pool’s structure, often involving custom masonry work to create a truly bespoke outdoor environment.

Potential to Increase Home Value

A beautiful, well-built inground pool is a highly desirable feature for many homebuyers, and a gunite pool is often seen as the gold standard. Studies have shown that an inground pool can increase a home’s value by 5% to 7%. Because gunite pools are permanent, custom additions to the property, they are viewed as a significant upgrade. When paired with professional landscaping and a beautiful patio, a gunite pool transforms your backyard into a luxurious outdoor living space, which can be a major selling point and a solid return on your investment.

Disadvantages to Consider

While gunite pools offer incredible benefits, it’s important to be aware of the potential downsides before you commit. The most significant factor for many homeowners is the higher upfront cost. The custom nature of the build, intensive labor, and quality of materials mean that gunite pools are a larger initial investment compared to fiberglass or vinyl liner options. The construction timeline is also considerably longer. You’ll need to be prepared for your backyard to be a construction zone for two to three months, which requires patience and planning.

Maintenance is another key consideration. The traditional plaster finish on a gunite pool is porous, which means it requires more diligent chemical balancing and regular brushing to prevent algae growth. Over time, the plaster surface will also need to be refinished, typically every 10 to 15 years, which is an additional long-term expense. Finally, the quality of your finished pool is entirely dependent on the skill of your installer. Choosing an inexperienced contractor can lead to costly structural problems down the road, making it essential to partner with a reputable and experienced company.

Higher Initial Installation Cost

There’s no getting around it: gunite pools are one of the more expensive inground pool options. The price tag reflects the custom, hands-on construction process. Unlike pre-fabricated pools, every gunite pool requires a dedicated team of skilled laborers for excavation, steelwork, plumbing, and the specialized gunite application. The raw materials, including tons of concrete and steel, also contribute to the higher cost. While the long-term durability can offset some of this expense, you need to be prepared for a significant upfront investment that typically starts around $50,000 and can easily exceed $100,000 for larger, more complex designs.

Surface and Maintenance Needs

The interior surface of a gunite pool, most commonly plaster, requires more hands-on maintenance than the smooth, non-porous surfaces of fiberglass pools. Because plaster is slightly porous, it can be a breeding ground for algae if water chemistry isn’t properly maintained. This means you’ll need to be diligent about testing your water, balancing chemicals, and brushing the pool walls weekly. Over the years, the plaster can also stain or erode. Most gunite pools will need to be resurfaced every 10 to 15 years, and this type of restoration project is essential to keep them looking and feeling their best.

Importance of a Skilled Installer

The final quality of a gunite pool is 100% dependent on the expertise of the team that builds it. The process of bending rebar, installing plumbing, and spraying the gunite correctly requires years of experience and specialized knowledge. An improper installation can lead to a host of problems, from plumbing leaks hidden within the concrete to structural cracks that are incredibly expensive to repair. This is not a project for a general contractor. It is absolutely critical to choose a dedicated pool builder with a proven track record and a portfolio of high-quality gunite projects, like Gappsi, to ensure your investment is built to last.

Understanding Gunite Pool Costs

When budgeting for a gunite pool, it’s helpful to understand what goes into the final price. The total cost is a combination of materials, labor, and any additional features you choose to include. On average, homeowners can expect a gunite pool installation to cost between $50,000 and $120,000. This wide range is due to the completely custom nature of these projects. A simple, medium-sized pool will fall on the lower end of that spectrum, while a large, freeform pool with an attached spa, waterfall, and high-end finishes will be at the higher end or even exceed it. The price reflects a permanent home improvement that adds both lifestyle and monetary value to your property.

Beyond the pool itself, remember to budget for the surrounding environment. The cost of the pool shell is just one piece of the puzzle. You’ll also need to account for the patio or pool deck, landscaping, and fencing, which is required by law in most areas. These elements are essential for creating a complete and functional outdoor space. When you receive a quote, make sure it clearly outlines what is included, from excavation and equipment to the final finish. Working with a comprehensive design and build firm like Gappsi can help streamline this process, ensuring all aspects of your backyard transformation are considered from the start.

Average Installation Cost

The initial investment for a gunite pool is significant, but it’s important to see it as a long-term addition to your home. The national average cost for a basic gunite pool installation typically ranges from $50,000 to $120,000, with prices on Long Island often leaning toward the higher end of this spectrum due to regional labor and material costs. This base price generally includes the design, excavation, steel framework, plumbing, the gunite shell, standard filtration equipment, and a basic plaster finish. The final price tag is heavily influenced by the size, shape, and depth of the pool, as a larger pool naturally requires more materials and labor. When planning your budget, it’s wise to have a clear idea of your must-have features to create a design that delivers your dream backyard within your financial comfort zone.

Cost Breakdown: Materials, Labor, and Permits

The cost of a gunite pool can be broken down into several key components, with a general price range of $100 to $280 per square foot for the pool itself. Materials make up a large portion of this, including tons of steel rebar for the frame, the specialized gunite concrete mix, all necessary plumbing pipes and fittings, and the interior finish. Labor is the other major expense, covering the skilled teams needed for each stage: excavation, steel-tying, plumbing, the certified gunite nozzleman, and the plastering specialists. You also need to account for municipal permits and inspections, which are required for any new pool construction and vary in cost by town.

Factors That Affect the Final Price

Several key factors will influence the final cost of your gunite pool project beyond the basic build. The most obvious are size and depth; a larger and deeper pool will always cost more due to the increased materials and labor required. The complexity of the design also plays a big role, as a simple rectangular pool is more affordable to form and build than a custom freeform shape with multiple curves or a vanishing edge. Site conditions are another important consideration. If your backyard has a high water table, is on a steep slope, or is difficult to access with heavy machinery, it may increase labor and preparation costs. Finally, your choice of interior finish can significantly impact the price, with standard white plaster being the most budget-friendly option and premium pebble or all-tile finishes costing considerably more.

Cost of Popular Add-On Features

This is where you can truly personalize your pool, but it’s also where costs can add up quickly. Popular add-on features like a diving board, slide, or a dramatic waterfall will each increase the total price. An attached spa is one of the most sought-after additions, providing a year-round place to relax, similar to our standalone hot tubs and swim spas. Advanced features like automated pool covers for safety and heat retention, energy-efficient variable-speed pumps, and colorful LED lighting systems also contribute to the final cost. And don’t forget the area around the pool. A beautiful patio made from high-quality natural stone pavers, a shaded pergola for lounging, and professional landscaping are all part of creating the complete backyard resort experience.

Long-Term Ownership and Maintenance Costs

A gunite pool is a significant investment in your home and lifestyle, and like any major home feature, it comes with ongoing ownership costs. Thinking about these long-term expenses from the start helps you plan your budget and ensures you can enjoy your backyard oasis without any financial surprises. The primary long-term costs are periodic resurfacing and annual maintenance. By understanding these predictable expenses, you can properly care for your pool, protecting its structural integrity and keeping it beautiful for years of family fun and relaxation. Proper care is key to maximizing the life of your investment.

The Cost of Resurfacing and Repairs

The plaster finish on a gunite pool is durable, but it doesn’t last forever. Over time, you might notice staining, roughness, or small cracks appearing. To address this, we recommend resurfacing your pool every 10 to 15 years. This process involves removing the old finish and applying a new one, which restores the pool’s appearance and seals the surface to prevent leaks. The cost for resurfacing typically ranges from $6,000 to $15,000, depending on your pool’s size and the materials you choose. It’s a crucial maintenance step that protects your investment and gives you a chance to update the look of your swimming pools.

Annual Maintenance Expenses

Beyond the major periodic updates, you’ll have regular annual costs to keep your pool in pristine condition. These expenses cover chemicals, cleaning, and minor repairs, generally totaling between $2,700 and $4,000 per year, or about $80 to $150 per month during pool season. This budget accounts for everything needed to keep the water balanced and safe for swimming, as well as running the pump and filter. Consistent upkeep not only makes your pool more enjoyable but can also help extend the life of its surface. Part of this upkeep includes caring for the surrounding patio, which may require professional restoration and sealing to prevent wear and tear.

How to Plan Your Gunite Pool Project

Bringing a gunite pool to life is an exciting process, but it requires careful planning to ensure everything goes smoothly. From setting a budget to choosing the right team, each step is crucial for creating the backyard oasis you’ve envisioned. Thinking through the details upfront will save you time and stress later, making the construction phase much more enjoyable. Let’s walk through the key considerations for planning your project, so you can feel confident and prepared as you get started on this amazing home addition.

Ways to Save Money on Your Installation

There’s no getting around it: gunite pools are a significant investment. They are often considered the most premium option, with installation costs that can range from around $100 to $280 per square foot for the pool itself. However, being mindful of your design choices can help manage the budget. Opting for a classic geometric shape instead of a complex freeform design can reduce labor and material costs. You can also plan for elaborate features like waterfalls or custom lighting as a future upgrade rather than part of the initial build. Scheduling your installation during the off-season, like the fall or winter, may also present opportunities for savings with some builders.

Hiring the Right Pool Builder

The single most important decision you’ll make is choosing your pool builder. The right partner will not only deliver a stunning, well-built pool but also provide a seamless and positive experience from start to finish. A builder with a strong reputation and deep roots in the community ensures your pool is constructed correctly and will last for decades. Here on Long Island, working with an experienced team like Gappsi means you have a partner who understands local building codes and soil conditions. A great builder acts as your guide, helping you design the perfect pool and outdoor space that fits your lifestyle and complements your home’s architecture.

Get Multiple Quotes

Before you commit, it’s wise to gather at least three detailed estimates from different pool companies. This isn’t just about finding the lowest price; it’s about understanding the value each builder offers. A thorough quote will break down the costs for excavation, materials, labor, and equipment. Comparing these proposals side-by-side allows you to see differences in the quality of materials proposed or the scope of work included. Be cautious of any bid that is drastically lower than the others, as it could signify subpar materials or hidden costs that will appear later.

Check Credentials and Reviews

Once you have a few quotes, do your homework on each company. Verify that any builder you consider is fully licensed, bonded, and insured to protect yourself from liability. Next, look for social proof of their quality and customer service. Read online reviews and testimonials, but also ask to see a portfolio of their completed projects. A confident builder will be proud to share their work. You can often get a great feel for a company’s craftsmanship by watching videos of their projects, which showcases their process and the final product in a dynamic way. This research helps ensure you’re hiring a professional and reliable team.

Request a Detailed Contract

After selecting your builder, the final step before breaking ground is to sign a comprehensive contract. This document is your project’s blueprint and your protection. Always get a detailed, written contract that clearly outlines every aspect of the job. It should include a complete cost breakdown, a specific payment schedule, the exact materials and equipment to be used, and a projected timeline with start and completion dates. The contract should also specify warranty information for both the pool structure and the equipment. A clear and thorough contract ensures everyone is on the same page and minimizes the chance of misunderstandings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a gunite pool actually last? A gunite pool is a permanent addition to your home. With proper care, its structure can easily last for 50 years or more. The steel-reinforced concrete shell is incredibly strong and built to withstand Long Island’s weather. While the interior plaster surface will need to be refinished every 10 to 15 years to keep it looking fresh, the pool itself is built for a lifetime of enjoyment.

Why does it take so long to build a gunite pool? The construction timeline, typically 8 to 12 weeks, reflects the custom, hands-on nature of the project. Unlike pre-made pools that are simply placed in the ground, a gunite pool is built from scratch right in your backyard. The process involves excavation, intricate steel framework installation, plumbing, and then spraying the concrete. The most time-consuming part is the curing phase, where the concrete shell needs about a month to gain its full strength. This patience ensures a durable, high-quality result.

Is a gunite pool harder to take care of than other pools? It does require a bit more hands-on attention, but it’s very manageable. The plaster surface is more porous than fiberglass, so it needs consistent weekly brushing to prevent algae from taking hold. You’ll also need to stay on top of your water chemistry. Think of it as regular upkeep, similar to tending a garden. This routine care is key to protecting your investment and keeping the water sparkling clean.

I love the idea of a custom shape, but does that make it a lot more expensive? The complexity of the design is a major factor in the final price. A simple rectangular pool will cost less than a freeform lagoon with multiple curves and built-in features. While custom shapes do increase the initial investment, the primary benefit of gunite is getting a pool that perfectly fits your yard’s unique layout and your personal style, which is something standard pool shapes just can’t offer.

The Muttontown project added a spa. Can I add features like that to my existing pool later? Yes, it’s possible to renovate and add features like a spa to an existing gunite pool, as the Muttontown project shows. However, it’s much more seamless and cost-effective to incorporate these elements into the original design. Planning for features like a spa, tanning ledge, or waterfall from the beginning allows them to be integrated directly into the pool’s structure and plumbing for a flawless look.

Key Takeaways

  • Design Without Limits: Gunite construction offers unmatched flexibility, allowing you to create a pool that perfectly matches your home’s architecture and includes custom features like waterfalls or built-in seating.
  • Invest in Durability: Gunite pools are built to last a lifetime and can increase your property value, but it’s important to plan for both the initial installation cost and future maintenance like resurfacing every 10 to 15 years.
  • A Skilled Pro is Non-Negotiable: The quality of a gunite pool is entirely dependent on the builder’s skill, making it essential to hire a licensed, experienced professional to protect your investment and ensure a flawless result.

Travertine is known for its durability and ruggedness as a natural stone.  Even the toughest materials need TLC. Take good care of your outdoor travertine tile by sealing it every one to two years to keep it protected from damage and looking fresh.

There are three main types of sealers for travertine the type of sealer you choose really depends on the look you want to achieve:

  1. Enhancing Stone Sealers – Enhancing stone sealers penetrate into travertine and enhance the natural colors found in the stone while protecting it from staining and acid discoloration that can easily occur in this calcium-rich stone. Enhancing sealers are a great way to refresh older pavers, or bring out vibrant colors in travertine.
  2. Impregnating Sealers – Impregnating sealers are very similar to enhancing sealers, but they can deposit solid particles into the pores of stone while preventing water, dirt, and oil from penetrating the surface of your tile.  This is a great choice for hardscaping.
  3. Topical Sealers Glossy Finish – Topical Glossy Sealers give your travertine a lustrous, gleaming appearance while sealing out oil and grease that can stain and discolor porous travertine tile.  Glossy sealers also prevent the color of your tile from fading.  Protect your investment by sealing your stone regularly, and researching the best sealant for your tile.

Hydrazzo checks all those boxes, and its unique specifications are what set it apart. Let’s get into the specifics of what makes Hydrazzo a top-tier choice for homeowners who want the best for their swimming pools and outdoor living spaces.

Available Hydrazzo Colors

One of the most exciting parts of designing a pool is choosing the water color, and the finish you select plays the biggest role in that. Hydrazzo offers a beautiful selection of over 15 unique colors, giving you plenty of options to create the exact look you’re dreaming of. Each color has a natural, variegated appearance, which means the finish isn’t just a flat, single tone. Instead, it has subtle variations and depth that make your pool look like a natural body of water. This allows the finish to complement any style of poolscape, whether you’re aiming for a modern, minimalist vibe or a lush, tropical retreat. The right color can tie your entire backyard design together, from the patio stones to the landscaping.

Popular choices like Arctic White, Catalina Blue, and Hatteras Gray

With so many options, it helps to look at a few favorites. Arctic White creates a crisp, classic look that makes the water appear a brilliant, light blue on a sunny day. For a deeper, more dramatic effect, Catalina Blue gives the water a rich, sapphire tone that feels like a luxurious private lagoon. If you’re leaning toward a more contemporary and sophisticated aesthetic, Hatteras Gray is an excellent choice, providing a serene, slate-blue hue that is both calming and incredibly chic. These popular choices showcase the versatility of the Hydrazzo line, offering a perfect starting point for envisioning your own backyard oasis.

Technical Product Information

The beauty of a Hydrazzo finish isn’t just skin deep; its durability comes from its unique composition. As the very first polished pool finish developed in the industry, it has a track record of over 20 years of proven performance. The formula combines coarse-graded crystalline and colored marble with white Portland cement and other performance-enhancing ingredients. This special blend is precisely what creates the signature silky-smooth texture that feels so incredible. It’s hand-polished on-site to achieve that luxurious feel while maintaining the strength and resilience of an exposed aggregate surface. This meticulous process ensures your pool finish is not only beautiful but also built to last for years of enjoyment.

How Hydrazzo Compares to Other Finishes

Hydrazzo vs. Durazzo

When you’re deciding on a pool finish, Hydrazzo and Durazzo often come up as top contenders, and for good reason. Hydrazzo is celebrated for its incredibly luxurious, silky-smooth texture. It’s made from a blend of white marble and colored aggregates that are polished down to create a surface that feels gentle on your skin and swimsuits. This makes it a fantastic choice if comfort and a high-end feel are at the top of your list. It’s the kind of finish that transforms a simple swim into a more spa-like experience, offering both beauty and the proven durability of exposed aggregates.

On the other hand, Durazzo is primarily known for its exceptional toughness and resistance to common pool problems like staining and discoloration. It’s a robust finish designed to handle years of use while looking great. While both options are durable, the choice often comes down to your main priority. If you want a finish that combines a stunning, variegated appearance with a uniquely smooth feel, Hydrazzo is an excellent pick. Our team at Gappsi often helps homeowners weigh these factors to select the perfect finish for their custom swimming pools, ensuring the final result is both beautiful and practical for their lifestyle.

How Long Does Hydrazzo Pool Plaster Last?

Its life expectancy is 15 to 20 years and offers one of the smoothest finishes you can achieve and comes in a variety of colors, and it is also the hardest.

Toughness Without Roughness!

The secret to the Hydrazzo finish is the final step: polishing the surface to a brilliant luster, thereby unlocking the marble’s natural beauty and extraordinary strength. The color is breathtaking, achieving a soothing, color-intensifying effect. Hydrazzo is the “smooth sensation” in exposed aggregate pool finishes, friendly to fingers, toes, and swimsuits.

Pool Bubbler Design Ideas, Inspiration & Considerations.

Pool bubblers are a popular water feature for many pool owners, because of the tranquility and peace created by the water.  It also helps the Pool Bubbletrs are attractive to look at too!  We see a request for pool bubblers also when there is a spa attached to the pool. Bubblers are small fountains that create water columns in shallow areas of your pool. They are commonly used on shallow shelves, spas, and pool steps. Below, I’ll walk through some of the main benefits and watch-outs of pool bubblers.

Main Benefits

Outside of being pretty to look at, bubblers provide a few additional benefits for your pool.

  • Sound Blocking – Bubblers can be a great sound blocker for noisy neighbors or a busy street in front of your house. The rush of the water has a wonderful calming effect, much like a waterfall or spillover.
  • Cooling Down Water – Bubblers and many other water features are also great for cooling down your pool water. The rush of the water out of the column keeps your pool water moving, introducing oxygen into your water and reducing the temperature. This is a blessing for those shallow pool areas if you live in a hot climate. Bubblers can help keep that water cool and enjoyable.
  • Aesthetics – When it comes to design, the surrounding environment of your pool is almost as important as the pool itself. If you have a lot of natural landscaping around your pool, bubblers can be a great way to keep that zen feeling that your trees and other greenery help establish.

Marble Stone Pavers And Pool Coping Commack NY

Gappsi designed a backyard in Commack NY that included a gunite swimming pool that was 20×40.  The pool design included a sundeck and a built-in spa. We installed 2 pool bubblers on the sundeck and 4 jets on the bench along the 44 ft side of the pool and in front of the spa as well.

Our team installed glass tiles to outline the edge of the spa bench, the steps, and the sundeck. The plaster to finish the interior of the pool is the Hydrazzo Gulfstream quartz color and the interior is finished with an acid wash and then polished.  The pool is also equipped with an autocover in charcoal gray. The patio installation consists of G038 marble pavers selected from the Gappsi stone collection and marble coping 2 inches thick for the pool coping and the spa coping. This was a very large patio to install. The steps were accented with gray pavers as well as the bench and the column. Installation and Long-Term Care

The Importance of Proper Application and Honing

Getting that signature Hydrazzo look isn’t just about the material itself; it’s about the craftsmanship behind the installation. As the original polished pool finish, Hydrazzo has a unique final step that sets it apart: a meticulous polishing process. This isn’t just a top coat; it’s a technique that hones the surface to a brilliant luster, which is what reveals the marble’s inherent strength and silky-smooth feel. This crucial step is why professional installation is so important. When you build a pool with experienced technicians, you ensure the finish is applied and polished correctly, guaranteeing the durability and luxurious texture that Hydrazzo is famous for. It’s this expert touch that transforms the raw materials into a stunning, resilient surface.

Maintaining the Silky-Smooth Texture

One of the best things about a Hydrazzo finish is its longevity and relatively simple upkeep. It’s specifically designed for lower maintenance, resisting common issues like stains and algae growth. But what really makes it a smart long-term investment is its restorability. Over years of use, if the surface ever begins to feel less smooth, it doesn’t require a complete overhaul. Instead, the finish can be re-polished to bring it right back to its original, brand-new feel and appearance. This ability to restore the surface is a significant advantage, saving you time and money down the road. It ensures your pool remains a beautiful, timeless centerpiece of your backyard for many years to come.

Potential Considerations with a Hydrazzo Finish

Hydrazzo is an absolutely stunning choice for a pool finish, offering a level of luxury and smoothness that’s hard to match. But like any premium home improvement material, it’s wise to go in with a full understanding of what to expect. Thinking through the investment and long-term care ensures you’ll be happy with your decision for years to come. These aren’t drawbacks, but rather important points to consider as you plan your dream pool. Being informed is the first step to a successful project, and it helps you appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into creating such a beautiful and durable surface for your backyard oasis.

Understanding the Upfront Cost

There’s no getting around it—Hydrazzo is a premium, high-end finish, and its price reflects that. The upfront cost is typically higher than what you might see for a standard plaster or a more basic aggregate finish. This is because it uses high-quality materials, including polished marble aggregates, and involves a specialized, multi-step application process that requires a high degree of skill. Think of it as an investment in long-term beauty and durability. While the initial number might be bigger, the finish is designed to last 15 to 20 years with proper care, making it a cost-effective choice over its entire lifespan. A professional team can walk you through a detailed quote so you know exactly where your investment is going.

Finish Sensitivity and Maintenance Needs

One of the most common questions about Hydrazzo is how it holds up over time. While incredibly durable, the silky-smooth texture can be sensitive to its environment. Improper water chemistry, particularly in saltwater systems, or significant temperature shifts can sometimes cause the surface to feel less smooth over the years. This doesn’t mean it’s fragile, but it does mean that consistent maintenance is key. Staying on top of your pool’s chemical balance and following a routine care schedule will go a long way in preserving that signature polished feel. Working with experienced pool professionals who understand the nuances of a Hydrazzo finish can help you protect your investment and keep it feeling brand new.

Toughness Without Roughness!

So, how does Hydrazzo manage to be so strong yet so smooth? The secret is in the final step of the installation process: polishing. After the material is applied, the surface is meticulously polished to a brilliant luster. This technique doesn’t just make it look beautiful; it hones the marble aggregates and other components, creating an incredibly dense and strong surface. This process is what unlocks the material’s natural durability and gives it that “toughness without roughness” quality. It’s a finish that’s gentle on your skin and swimsuits but tough enough to stand up to years of fun in the sun.

How to Restore a Rough Finish

If you do notice your Hydrazzo finish losing some of its smoothness over time, don’t panic. One of the biggest advantages of this material is that it can be restored without needing a complete overhaul. Unlike other finishes that might require being completely chipped out and replaced, a Hydrazzo surface can often be brought back to life. A professional can simply re-polish the surface, removing any minor imperfections and bringing back that original silky texture and brilliant shine. This ability to restore the finish makes it a truly sustainable and valuable long-term choice for your pool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Hydrazzo different from a standard plaster pool finish? Think of it as the difference between a basic paint job and a hand-polished marble countertop. Standard plaster is a simple, one-note surface. Hydrazzo is crafted from a blend of high-quality marble aggregates and cement that is meticulously hand-polished on-site. This final polishing step is what creates its signature silky-smooth feel while also making the surface incredibly dense and durable.

Is a smooth finish like Hydrazzo slippery to walk on? It’s a common question, but the answer is no. While the finish feels incredibly smooth and luxurious to the touch, it’s not slippery underfoot. The composition of the polished aggregates provides a safe, non-slip surface. This makes it an excellent choice for every part of your pool, including steps, benches, and shallow sun shelves where you and your family will be walking.

How do I choose a Hydrazzo color to get the water look I want? The color of the finish directly creates the color of your water. To get that classic, crisp light-blue pool, a white-based finish like Arctic White is a great choice. If you’re dreaming of a deep, sapphire-toned lagoon, a darker finish like Catalina Blue will get you there. For a more modern, serene look, a gray finish can create a beautiful slate-blue water color. We always suggest looking at samples and considering how the color will complement your patio stone and landscaping.

What does long-term maintenance look like for a Hydrazzo pool? One of the best parts of a Hydrazzo finish is that it’s designed for lower maintenance. Its dense, polished surface naturally resists algae growth and staining better than traditional plaster. The most important task is simply maintaining proper water chemistry. Consistent, balanced water is the key to preserving that smooth texture and vibrant color for its entire 15 to 20-year lifespan.

What happens if the finish starts to feel rough after several years? This is where Hydrazzo truly stands out. Unlike other finishes that might need to be completely chipped out and replaced, a Hydrazzo surface can be restored. If years of use or inconsistent water chemistry cause any roughness, a professional can re-polish the existing surface. This process brings it right back to its original silky-smooth feel and brilliant appearance, extending the life of your investment.
