Travertine Pool Coping And Spillover Gunite Spa

Travertine-Pool-Coping-And-Spillover-Gunite-SpaWhat Is Travertine Pool Coping & Spillover Gunite Spa?

Travertine is a natural stone that is harvested from quarries in Europe and Asia. This material is widely used for making tiles and pavers for interior and exterior floorings. They are used to make pool copings, too. Did you know that Travertine pool coping remains one of the finest choices in the market for enhancing the look and functionality of the pool area?

Travertine is available in different textures, shapes, and colors, giving homeowners the flexibility to create unique pool copings. If the pool is rectangular, our designers may recommend using travertine drop face pavers. But if your pool is round and curvy, then travertine bullnose pavers may be more appropriate.  Travertine is ready for use in a variety of sizes, finishes, and styles, including roman walnut, coral-stone, ivory, ivory swirl, tumbled bullnose, silver, and other finishes that make your pool area look genuinely outstanding.

Does Travertine Make A Good Pool Coping?

Travertine pool coping remains one of the finest choices in the market for enhancing the look and functionality of the pool area.

Tumbled and honed pavers are often the choice for travertine pool coping because they are rough yet not too harsh on the skin. They also make the surface safer even when wet because they offer friction. This means that you can walk barefoot on wet coping without fear of slipping. Travertine is an ideal material for pool coping for a couple of reasons. The first reason is this stone is cooler to the touch when compared to other stones. The second reason is it offers a high level of slip-resistance, making it safer for wet feet of all ages.

You will often see travertine coping in hotels and resorts because of their enduring beauty and grandeur. Why not bring the same luxuriousness to your home’s outdoor area? Gappsi offers high-quality travertine pavers at great prices.

Give Your Pool A Unique Look With Travertine Pavers

Natural stone pavers are commonly installed in pool areas of luxurious homes because of their beauty and their practicality. Travertine pavers are particularly popular. They are available in a variety of colors and shapes, offering design flexibility. There’s something about a travertine pool deck that is understatedly elegant. Aside from its enduring beauty, travertine also offers many other benefits.

Since this natural stone absorbs water, it keeps the pool area safe. Accidents like slipping can be minimized.  Travertine pavers can keep themselves cool even when they are exposed to heat.  In fact, they are 20% cooler than concrete pavers and other natural stones.

Travertine, like marble, is durable and strong. With proper care, its color and slip resistance capability will remain the same for a long time, thus preserving the elegance and safety of your pool area.

Compare Marble To Travertine & Travertine Wins For Being Less Expensive To Buy & Maintain!

The key to keeping your travertine pavers in excellent condition is proper and regular care. Clean the deck at least once a year using a pressure washer. You can also scrub the pavers with a brush. However, avoid using harmful cleaners that can damage the integrity of the natural stone.  Gappsi offers Cleaning and Sealing services for Paving Stone Patios, Driveways, and Retaining Walls.

Travertine-Pool-Coping-And-Spillover-Gunite-Spa1Are You Considering Adding A Spa To An Existing Inground Swimming Pool?

Even if your pool’s already in the ground, you can add a spa to it. Are you thinking of adding a spillover spa that will be an add-on to your existing pool? Its outer edge will at least be partly in the pool, which is why it’s called a spillover.  The water from your spa might flow into your pool as people get in and out of it.

The spillover spa looks clean and fits right into your existing pool design. Alternatively, you might consider installing an in-ground spa separate from your pool. This option can be designed to blend into the natural landscape with rocks, plants, and trees.

You might prefer a naturalistic, standalone spa, but keep in mind that it may end up costing more than the spillover spa.

The Spillover Gunite Spa is the Easier Option

Your spillover spa will be built into your existing pool. That means you won’t need to buy a second pump to keep your spa clean. Instead, both it and the pool can run on the same pump, saving you money and time on spa maintenance.

Cost isn’t the only thing that makes a spillover spa more appealing. Many people who have installed a spillover spa love the convenience of it. They can jump from the warm waters to the cool waters for a refreshing dip that segues into a relaxing float.

With a spillover spa, you get all of the benefits of having a hot tub, too. It helps you relax and relieve stress and adds value to your property. Why wouldn’t potential buyers want to have a pool-and-spa combo in their backyard?

Finally, a spillover spa looks excellent, too. It’s a streamlined addition to your pool, and it makes the setup appear that much more luxurious. You, your family, and your guests will love using it for years to come.

Travertine Coping And Spillover Gunite Spa In Yaphank NY

Gappsi’s latest home improvement was in Suffolk County Long Island in Yaphank.  The spa was built in gunite and the pool was built using a vinyl liner. We installed an automated control for the heat.  The homeowner can even control the flow of the spa from an iPhone or a smartphone. HOW COOL!  The spa was built between the pool and the pavilion. The homeowner can use the spa and also friends can see from the pavilion creating a congregating area between the spa and the pavilion sitting area. We installed stools wrapped with the liner on one side. Steps to get into the pool. And the pool is a gradual slope with a straight wall that goes from 45 inches in the shallow area to 66 inches in the deep end.

Bluestone Patio Pavers and Pool Copings in Nassau and Suffolk County

Bluestone Patio Pavers
A custom pool with durable bluestone coping and pavers

Remodeling a patio is a tough task; it changes the entire look of your home’s exterior. You have to be extra careful when creating a landscape design with pavers and pool copings. The pavers and copings should look good and offer durability and convenience. Recently, bluestone patio pavers have become a popular choice amongst homeowners to spruce up their outdoor space. Read on for more details.

What is Bluestone?

Firstly, bluestone isn’t a geological category of a rock-stone. It represents more than 20 distinct rock varieties suitable for construction purposes; their deposits are present worldwide.

The U.S has two distinct types of bluestone: the first is a sandstone found in Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. The other is a variety of limestone found in Shenandoah Valley in Virginia.

The name bluestone originates from the dark-blue-colored sandstone first found in Ulster County, New York. But this doesn’t mean this rock doesn’t have different shades. Besides the blue tones, bluestones also appear in shades of gray and brown.

At Gappsi, our masonry designers and installers are experts at transforming outdoor spaces with high-quality bluestone patio pavers and pool copings.

Why Use Bluestone Patio Pavers?

Bluestone is a trendy choice for patios, walkways, stepping stones, etc. Home improvement contractors in Nassau and Suffolk County recommend bluestone for patios due to the following reasons:

  • Bluestone is a Strong Material

Bluestone is one of the strongest stones used in construction. It ranks sixth on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. This makes it harder than marble at fifth and softer than granite at seventh.

Unlike other natural stones, bluestone doesn’t scratch, chip, or break easily. Also, this stone has an above-average compressive strength, meaning it doesn’t crack under pressure easily.

Bluestone’s hardiness makes it a popular building material in the US and worldwide. There are plenty of structures and monuments made of bluestone worth checking out.

  • Bluestone is Weather-Resistant

Bluestone patio pavers last long because the weather doesn’t damage this naturally-occurring rock. It can tolerate all kinds of weather and temperatures, whether sunny, snowy, or even icy. Hence, you can install it on your patio, no matter where you live.

The only point you should remember is to avoid dark shades of bluestone if you live in a highly sunny area; darker shades may get too hot under the sun.

  • Bluestone has Good Drainage

Another quality of bluestone is that its absorption rate is only two percent. This means bluestone patio pavers and pool copings do not become very slippery, a major concern if you live in a rainy area or have children at home.

Moreover, bluestone’s porous nature prevents bacteria and algae from growing on the pavers and copings. Its good drainage properties also prevent pavers from stains caused by the runoff from the snow or rain. Such stains are quite common in other natural rocks with high moisture content, like granite.

  • Bluestone Patio Pavers Look Super-Attractive

The main charm of bluestone lies in its incredible variation. Even the bluestone from the same quarry and batch might differ slightly. You can browse through the different varieties to find the one that suits your preferences.

  • The elegant blue shades and other earth-toned colors look striking with all kinds of landscapes.
  • Uniform shapes easily available in the market are square, rectangles, and straight lines.
  • Don’t want to go too mainstream? You can choose from interesting patterns featuring irregular shapes and jagged edges like chevron and herringbone.
  • Bluestone comes in many sizes, from small pebbles to large boulders.

Uniform shapes and sizes give a neat look and are easy to design and install. In contrast, irregular pavers are a little tricky to install, but they make patios look natural. Gappsi offers custom fabrication of patio pavers and pool copings so that your outdoor space looks exactly how you want.

  • Bluestone is Easily Available

The United      States has numerous bluestone quarries that make this natural stone readily available in Nassau and Suffolk County, Long Island, NY. Hence, there is no additional cost of overseas shipping included in the price of bluestone patio pavers and pool copings.

Cleaning and Maintenance of Bluestone Patio Pavers and Pool Copings

Like other natural stones, bluestone also needs proper care and maintenance.

  • Keeping bluestone clean ensures it looks its best and lasts longer. Sweeping dust and debris from bluestone patios and poolsides regularly is a must. Use a water hose for anything that you can’t remove with a broom. For extra-stubborn stains, it’s better to call a professional paver cleaning and maintenance service for help.
  • One of the best qualities of bluestone is that it doesn’t need any refreshing like painted bricks, wood, vinyl, and other materials. It can maintain its natural look over a long time.
  • Remember that bluestone is a natural material. Even if you install uniform-sized patio pavers, the stone still displays a few imperfections like small crevices, clefts, and rust stains. These imperfections are a part of its beauty. This is what makes bluestone ideal for giving your patio a natural feel.
  • Bluestone is a dense but porous material. Hence, sealing bluestone patio pavers exposed to direct sunlight and other weathering elements is important. It protects them from absorbing dirt and other impurities. Sealing also saves the patio pavers from mineral stains and makes them last longer.

Benefits of Limestone Patio Pavers and Pool Copings

Limestone Patio Pavers & Pool Copings
A custom limestone patio designed by Gappsi

Planning to revamp your patio? Limestone patio pavers and pool copings are your best bet!

The material of patio pavers and pool copings matters because it affects everything, from convenience and aesthetics to budget and several other factors.

Although patio pavers and pool copings are available in many different forms, limestone has remained one of the most reliable paving choices in the market over all these years. Read on to find out why.

What is Limestone?

In simple words, limestone is a natural sedimentary rock formed of calcium carbonate, clay, silt, sand, and many other minerals. The deposits of this naturally beautiful rock are present all over the world.

Limestone is rightly described as universal and timeless; people have used it in many monumental constructions, like the Pyramids of Egypt, the Empire State Building, and the Houses of Parliament.

Due to the presence of minerals in limestone, it is available in various natural colors, including blue, gray, tan, green, beige, and red.

Want to know the main reason behind its high appeal and value? It’s the natural feel that radiates from this rock! It can complement both traditional and contemporary settings.

Benefits of Limestone Patio Pavers and Pool Copings

Expert Masonry designers and contractors in Nassau and Suffolk county, Long Island, NY, recommend limestone for patios. The reasons are as follows:

Gappsi's limestone patio pavers and pool coping

Hardwearing

Durability is the first thing people look for when constructing patios; limestone fulfills this requirement perfectly.

Limestone’s high durability may sound surprising because of its soft and elegant look, but this naturally-dense rock is impervious to elements. It doesn’t break or crumble easily under harsh weather conditions and extreme temperatures.

In fact, people have been using it in building things intended for heavy-duty use. This rock is not only suitable for patios but also ground floors, kitchens, and other interior parts of a home.

Aesthetic and Versatile

The best part about limestone is that it fits well with any style and color palette you have in mind. It is available in many colors, from dark to light gray, buff, white, blue, green, and even gold. Hence, you can easily match your patio with the interior of your house.

You can find limestone in different textures, amounts, sizes, and durability. Although most limestone pavers have a honed surface, some varieties can also be naturally split.

Experts usually heat limestone to a high temperature in a flame to create a smooth and uniform surface. They can easily chisel, tumble, split, or cut edges to match your requirements. Some textures are suitable for flat and smooth surfaces indoors, while others are perfect for patios and walkways.

Designers can help you choose from the limestone patio pavers and pool copings displays in showrooms. You can also get custom fabrication done by contractors in Nassau and Suffolk County in Long Island, NY.

An Effective Insulator

With its strong insulating properties, limestone prevents your patio and pool copings from getting too cold in the winter or too hot in the summer.

You can walk barefoot on the patio without worrying about burning your foot on hot and sunny days in Nassau and Suffolk County, Long Island, NY. Similarly, you won’t get cold feet while walking barefoot on the patio on chilly days.

Slip-Resistant Properties

Limestone has a little textured and riven profile, making it even more ideal for patios. How? Its texture facilitates underfoot resistance and reduces the chances of slipping to a great extent, even if your feet are wet or it has rained heavily.

With limestone patio pavers, you can let the children in your family run freely around the patio without having to worry about a bad fall.

An Eco-Friendly Choice

Limestone is one of the best options for environment-conscious people when it comes to remodeling the exterior of a house. This is because it’s a renewable stone and doesn’t increase your carbon footprint. Even if it gets damaged for any reason, its repairs won’t contribute to the already-high pollution levels of the nation.

Cleaning and Maintaining Limestone Patio Pavers and Pool Copings

One of the best parts about limestone patio pavers and pool copings is that you don’t necessarily have to seal them.

  • The first step to cleaning your limestone patio pavers and pool copings is to brush off the dust and debris from the surface with a broom. But be careful not to scratch the stone with your brush.
  • After removing dust and dirt from the surface, wash the pavers with warm water and non-acidic soap. You can soap the water and use a sponge mop to thoroughly clean all the grime and stains. After that, rinse with clean water and let the surface dry naturally.
  • Limestone is more susceptible to chemical damage than other building materials like concrete. Hence, you should never use any acid to clean limestone.
  • Acids cause chemical reactions and affect the colors and hardiness of the stone. So, always choose your cleaning products wisely.
  • Some soap scum and mineral stains may not come off easily. To get rid of them, pour a mixture of baking soda and warm water on a sponge and scrub well. If a stain still persists, you should let a professional paver cleaning service take care of that.

Natural Limestone Patio And Pool Long Island NY

Choosing The Right Stone For A Pool Deck

Natural-Limestone-Patio-And-Pool-Long-Island-NYWhen choosing the right stone such as a natural limestone patio and pool Long Island NY it’s important to embrace some practical and aesthetic considerations.  Whether it’s an elegant light-colored limestone perfect for a hot summer day, a natural fieldstone emulating the feel of a deep woods swimming hole, or reclaimed granite with its timeless weathered beauty, the following points will help in selecting the best stone for a pool deck or patio area.

The Four S’s to Consider

  • Style – The overall appearance of a pool deck and patio may vary depending on style. It could be sophisticated versus a more rustic look and feel.  The sophisticated style generally has clean lines while a rustic style offers an earthy feel and look with more natural, rougher lines.
  • Surface –  The texture of the stone has a big impact on the look as well as the feel of your patio surface.
    • A split face surface, like a reclaimed plank paver, gives a rustic look to the area.
    • A natural cleft surface comes from stones that are split by man along a natural seam in the stone.  This gives the surface an organic feel with a flatter surface compared to a rough split surface.
  • Shapes and Patterns – Stone shapes, whether irregularly shaped or straight edge squares and rectangles, may completely change the design of a pool deck as different design patterns will also,
  • Scale – It is important to think about the size of the stones. Deciding on small, medium, or large stones determine the look and feel of a pool deck area.

PRO TIP: If the deck space is large, consider using larger-sized pieces to give it a grand feeling. Smaller pieces may be used for more intricate patterns and offer a more sophisticated look.

  • Color – Natural stone comes in a variety of colors in addition to color combinations. Deciding on the stone consider if the pool is in direct sunlight for large amounts of time, then a lighter-colored stone would be good to keep the temperature down. Choose a color or color theme that relates to your home, or office building, as well as other stones in the nearby area.

The Right Stone For The Right Condition

A complement to the surrounding landscape, natural stone pool coping is as practical as it is attractive. Natural stone is durable and resists freeze-thaw cycles.

  • Heat Underfoot – Comfortable underfoot is important when choosing a stone for a pool deck and patio. Which type of stone will help to keep the surface cooler? The answer is a stone with less heat absorption. In general, lighter-colored stones have less heat absorption.
  • Freeze-Thaw – If the pool will be located in a freeze-thaw weather zone, be sure to pick a stone with lower water absorption for the pool deck. Granites, basalts, and porphyry top the charts in this category and will hold up to all weather conditions. We have also hand-picked some freeze-thaw-resistant limestones and sandstones that will work well.
  • Slip Resistance – The last thing you want is a slippery stone for a pool deck and patio. Luckily, adjustments to surface texture and joints can make a huge difference when it comes to creating a slip-resistant deck.

In addition to considering the appearance of the texture, consider the effect it has on the perceived slipperiness of a stone. Man-made surfaces provide excellent grip and some split surfaces tend to be less slippery. In general, stone surfaces with indentations and irregularities provide a better grip.

Natural-Limestone-Patio-And-Pool-Long-Island-NY3WIDE JOINTS VS MANY JOINTS

Wide joints between pavers or joints that have grass or other vegetation growing between them make the overall pool deck surface less slippery.

When there are many joints, your feet are always touching multiple joints which helps you naturally grip the surface and it is, therefore, more slip-resistant.

Pool Deck Materials We LOVE at Gappsi

Limestone – The luxurious feel and look of limestone make it a great choice for a pool deck.

Sandstone – A sedimentary rock composed of sand-size grains of mineral, rock, or organic material. Many sandstone materials are great for pool decks as their split surfaces are naturally slip-resistant. Colors range from beige to brown to gray-blue.

Granite – A coarse-grained igneous rock, granite has a high content of quartz and feldspar giving it a speckled appearance. One of the most durable quarried stones from around the world, granite is nearly always massive, hard, and tough.

Bluestone – Bluestone is actually a sandstone with a deep blue color but also appears with other hues such as shades of gray and brown. Bluestone is known for its advantageous price point. Natural cleft bluestone is quite slip-resistant.

Travertine – A form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, especially hot springs. Travertine often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and exists in white, tan, cream-colored, and even rusty varieties.

Marble – Marble can have beautiful pattern movement within the stone and comes in a wide variety of colors from white to salmon to gray, blue, green, and black.

One of the most versatile construction materials for pools is Gunite.  It is a simple mixture of cement, sand, and water.  To apply the Gunite to your framework contractors have 2 options; use a spray gun or blow the material onto the rebar framework.  The rebar offers strength and structure to the pool.

Gunite is porous and should not be used by itself to construct a pool. There must be a water barrier between the porous gunite and the pool water. Plaster is then applied to not only ensure a smooth touch on the pool surface but also to create a water barrier between the pool water and the gunite.

Winterizing your pool properly will help to keep your pool’s gunite/plaster structure intact.

Marble-Patios-And-Pools-On-Long-Island-NY1Painting VS Re-Plastering

Delaminations, stains, cracks, and generally dullness and lifelessness are reasons for wanting to give new life to your pool. Painting pools have been an option even before pool plastering came around. Back in the day, all pools were painted; it was an annual pool opening tradition. When the plaster for pools began to be used, pool owners appreciated the long-lasting and durable surface and the smooth white finish.

Longevity Factor:
Re-plastering a pool, when properly mixed, applied, cured, and maintained – can last 15-20 years. Pool paint, depending on the type of paint used, as well as application and curing factors, 2-7 years of life can be expected from a pool paint job.

Durability Factor:
Paints used for pools, spas, and fountains, are specifically made for underwater use and are quite durable against poor water chemistry, temperature extremes, and even rough treatment from pool equipment. Plaster, however, with its usual 1/2 inch thickness, can handle more distress than the thin layer of pool paint.

Appearance Factor:
Both the new plaster and new paint are looking good! Pool paint is shiny and reflective, and new plaster has a deep luster, like an eggshell. Of course, you can add colors and additives to plaster to create custom tones. You can do the same with paint, and could even paint a mural. Plaster may look the best for longer, but at least initially, and for the first few years, the appearance of both is fairly equal.

Travertine Veneer Wood Burning Fireplace

Marble-Patios-And-Pools-On-Long-Island-NY4Fireplaces are a natural gathering place and are often not just the focal point of a room, but often the focal point of the entire home or outside.  A fireplace provides a respite of warmth, conversation, and meditation from the outside world. Many agree that renovating a tired, worn out, and outdated fireplace has the same return on investment as updating a kitchen or bathroom, but with a much smaller price tag. Natural stone veneer panels are an excellent choice for such a renovation because they are cost-effective and incredibly easy to install.

Whether you’re envisioning a rustic, colonial, contemporary, modern, or Old World space, color and design add up to making your project look just right. Natural Stone Colors vary naturally, which is what makes it an authentic material to incorporate into projects.

Whether you’re renovating an old brick fireplace or building one anew, our world-class customer service team will walk you through the right process for you.
