gunite-pool-renovation-dune-road-west-hampton-nyUpgrade Your Pool and Add a Spa

To upgrade your pool and add a spa, you can consider options such as integrating a spa area directly into the existing pool design, creating a spillover feature from the spa to the pool, adding custom tile accents, installing water features like fountains or waterfalls, upgrading the pool lighting, and incorporating advanced filtration systems for optimal water quality. All while ensuring proper plumbing connects the spa and pool water flow seamlessly.

Key points to consider when adding a spa to your pool:

Placement: Decide whether you want the spa wholly integrated into the pool structure (like a raised seating area), attached to one side of the pool, or built as a separate unit nearby but connected to plumbing.

Design aesthetics: Choose a spa design that complements the style of your existing pool. Consider tile patterns, coping options, and overall visual flow.

Features: Based on your desired relaxation experience, choose spa features such as jets, blowers, spillways, and seating configurations.

Water circulation: Ensure proper plumbing is installed for independent water heating in the spa while maintaining a consistent flow between the pool and spa.

Automatic Pool Covers for Your Gunite Inground Pool

An automatic pool cover is a retractable vinyl cover that does not shrink and is most often fade-resistant. It has a track mounted on or under the pool decking, and an electric motor opens and closes it.

The automatic pool cover can also mean significant energy savings! It will help keep your pool warmer and allow you to keep it open longer. By keeping the cover closed when it is not being used, you save money by not having to run the pool heater as much.

Another great thing about an automatic pool cover is the safety aspect. These covers are the ultimate safety measure if appropriately used. There is a switch that operates the cover, which can be locked with a key, which adds another safety measure. This will eliminate just anyone from being able to open it. Lots of insurance companies consider an automatic pool cover safer than a fence.

Custom Features for Your Gunite Pool

The true beauty of a gunite pool lies in its potential for customization. This is your chance to create a one-of-a-kind backyard feature that perfectly suits your lifestyle. Whether you envision a serene escape for relaxation or a vibrant hub for entertaining, we can incorporate custom elements to make it happen. Think beyond the basic shape and consider adding features that reflect your personality and how you want to use the space. From dramatic water features and dynamic lighting to luxurious interior finishes, the possibilities are endless. We’ll work with you to design a pool that is uniquely yours, down to the smallest detail.

Elegant Water Features

Water features add movement, sound, and a touch of elegance to any pool design. The gentle sound of a cascading waterfall can create a tranquil atmosphere, while deck jets can provide a playful and modern touch. We can design and build a variety of custom water features that integrate seamlessly with your pool and landscape. These elements turn your pool into a dynamic work of art, enhancing the sensory experience of your entire backyard and creating a stunning focal point whether you’re in the water or relaxing poolside.

Spas, Waterfalls, and Swim-Up Bars

Imagine soaking in an integrated spa after a long day or enjoying a drink without ever leaving the water. We can build custom spas that spill over into the pool, creating a beautiful visual and auditory effect. For those who love to entertain, a swim-up bar adds a resort-like feel to your backyard. Sheer descent waterfalls can create a sleek, modern curtain of water, while natural rock waterfalls offer a more rustic, organic look. These features are designed to enhance your enjoyment and make your pool the ultimate destination for relaxation and fun.

Modern Water and Lighting Systems

The right technology can completely transform your pool experience. Modern LED lighting systems offer a spectrum of colors that can be changed to suit any mood or occasion, from a peaceful blue glow to a vibrant, multi-color light show for parties. We can also install automated systems that allow you to control your pool’s features, like lighting, heating, and water jets, directly from your smartphone. These smart systems add convenience and a “wow” factor, making your pool both beautiful and easy to manage.

Saltwater System Integration

Many homeowners are choosing saltwater systems for a more comfortable and natural swimming experience. A saltwater chlorine generator converts salt into chlorine, resulting in softer-feeling water that’s gentler on your skin, eyes, and hair. These systems also provide a more consistent level of sanitization with less maintenance than traditional chlorine pools. If you’re looking for a more luxurious and lower-maintenance option, we can easily integrate a saltwater system into your new gunite pool design.

Premium Interior Finishes and Tiles

The interior finish of your pool determines the water’s color and texture, setting the overall tone for your backyard oasis. We offer a wide selection of premium finishes, from classic plaster to durable pebble aggregates that come in a variety of colors and textures. You can also choose from an extensive collection of beautiful glass and porcelain tiles for the waterline, steps, and spa. These high-quality materials not only look stunning but are also built to withstand the elements and last for years.

Unique Design Details

It’s the small details that often make the biggest impact. We believe that every element of your pool should be thoughtfully considered to create a cohesive and polished look. From the style of the coping around the pool’s edge to the design of the entry steps, we work with you to select details that complement your home’s architecture and your personal taste. These finishing touches are what distinguish a standard pool from a truly custom-designed masterpiece, and we are dedicated to getting them just right.

Grand Entrances and Custom Handrails

Make a statement with a grand entrance to your pool. We can design wide, sweeping steps or a luxurious sun shelf, also known as a tanning ledge, that provides a shallow area for lounging in the water. Custom handrails, crafted from high-quality materials, not only provide safety but also add a sophisticated design element. Whether you prefer a sleek, modern look or a more traditional style, these custom details contribute to the overall elegance and functionality of your pool design.

Designing Your Complete Backyard Retreat

A new pool is the perfect opportunity to rethink your entire outdoor living space. At Gappsi, we specialize in creating cohesive backyard retreats where the pool is just one part of a larger, integrated design. We look at the big picture, considering how the pool, patio, landscaping, and other outdoor features will work together to create a harmonious and functional environment. Our team of designers and craftsmen can handle every aspect of your project, from masonry and landscaping to outdoor structures, ensuring a seamless flow and a consistent style throughout your property.

Integrated Landscape and Masonry Design

A truly stunning pool area is one that feels connected to its surroundings. Our design process involves carefully integrating the pool with the surrounding landscape and hardscape. We can design and build beautiful stone patios, retaining walls, and walkways that complement the pool and your home. Our landscape designers will then select plantings that soften the hardscape, add color and texture, and provide privacy, creating a lush and inviting atmosphere around your new pool.

Achieving the “Hamptons Style” Aesthetic

For homeowners in Westhampton, achieving the iconic “Hamptons Style” is often a key design goal. This aesthetic is characterized by a sense of classic elegance, clean lines, and a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor living. It often features natural materials, lush green lawns, and sophisticated yet comfortable entertaining spaces. Our team has extensive experience creating this look, using a thoughtful combination of landscape and masonry design to capture that timeless, coastal charm that is synonymous with the Hamptons.

High-End Materials for Patios and Pool Decks

The material you choose for your pool deck and patio sets the stage for your entire outdoor space. We offer a curated selection of high-end materials that are both beautiful and durable enough to withstand the Long Island climate. From the classic beauty of natural stone to the modern appeal of large-format porcelain pavers, we have options to suit any style. We’ll help you select the perfect material that not only looks great but also provides a safe, non-slip surface for your poolside activities.

Pennsylvania Bluestone and Porcelain Tiles

Two of our most popular options for pool surrounds are Pennsylvania Bluestone and porcelain tiles. Bluestone offers a timeless, natural elegance with its rich blue-gray tones and is a classic choice for Hamptons-style homes. For a more contemporary look, porcelain tiles provide a sleek, uniform appearance and are incredibly durable and low-maintenance. Both materials offer a luxurious finish that will make your pool area stand out.

Custom Outdoor Structures

To complete your backyard retreat, consider adding a custom outdoor structure that enhances both the beauty and functionality of your space. These structures can provide shade, define entertaining areas, and offer convenient storage or changing space. We design and build a variety of structures that are tailored to your property and needs, ensuring they integrate perfectly with your pool and landscape design. An outdoor structure can truly transform your pool area into a full-service outdoor living room.

Pool Houses, Pavilions, and Pergolas

A pool house can offer the ultimate convenience, with features like a changing room, bathroom, kitchenette, or lounge area. For a dedicated shaded space for dining or relaxing, a pavilion provides a solid roof for protection from the sun and rain. A pergola offers a more open, airy feel, creating dappled shade that is perfect for a poolside lounge. Whatever your needs, we can create a beautiful and functional structure that extends your living space outdoors.

Our Commitment to Quality Equipment and Materials

A beautiful design is only as good as the materials and equipment used to bring it to life. At Gappsi, we are committed to using only the highest quality products in every pool we build. We believe that investing in top-tier equipment and durable materials from the start is essential for ensuring the longevity, efficiency, and safety of your pool. This commitment to quality means you can enjoy a beautiful, low-maintenance pool for many years. We don’t cut corners, because we know that the unseen components of your pool are just as important as the ones you see every day.

Top-Tier Pool Equipment

Your pool’s circulation and filtration system is its heart, and we make sure it’s strong and reliable. We install high-performance pumps, filters, and heaters from industry-leading brands known for their durability and energy efficiency. Investing in quality equipment not only ensures your water stays clean and clear but can also reduce your long-term operating costs. We’ll help you select the right equipment for the size and features of your pool, guaranteeing optimal performance and a hassle-free ownership experience.

Durable and Efficient Plumbing

Proper plumbing is critical for the performance and safety of your pool. We use high-quality, durable pipes and fittings and design our plumbing systems for maximum efficiency. This means your water circulates effectively, your chemicals are distributed evenly, and your equipment runs at its best. Our expert installation ensures a leak-free system that is built to last, preventing future problems and protecting your investment. It’s a crucial behind-the-scenes detail that we take very seriously.

A gunite swimming pool is ideal due to its incredible design and versatility. Gunite lasts most of all in-ground pools and usually has the best warranties. It doesn’t require wooden frameworks to hold the shape, so construction is more accessible than standard concrete.

Over the years, gunite swimming pools have increasingly become popular among a majority of homeowners. Gunite pools are popularly known for their maximum longevity and high versatility. Although it is a little more costly, you can build any pool design from Gunite. Therefore, consider installing a gunite pool to transform your outdoor space into a luxurious haven. Before constructing a gunite swimming pool, weigh the pros and cons of this spectacular feature. This way, it will be much easier to determine whether a gunite pool is worth the investment.

gunite-swimming-pool-dune-road-westhampton-ny2A gunite pool can add a new charm to your outdoor space. As a result, gunite pools add value to your home. Pool professionals report that gunite pools can increase your home’s value.

Safety First – Pool Fencing Options

Investing in a beautiful pool for your backyard and surrounding it with a not-so-chic pool fence is one of those design decisions you may regret.  Choosing an attractive and practical pool fence for your lifestyle and the guests visiting your home will save you the worry and stress of wondering if everyone is safe.

Let’s explore pool fence ideas that will transform your backyard into an oasis of safety and style. Whether you prefer the timeless elegance of wooden fencing or the modern sophistication of glass railings, this collection showcases a variety of designs that will elevate the aesthetic appeal of your pool area.

  • Steel Cable Fencing—Cable railings around pools open the view beyond your pool. Cables are thin compared to larger wood or metal pickets. The wire cables around your pool will seem to disappear, allowing you to enjoy the view, whether it’s the sunset at your beach house, sweeping mountains, or a backyard oasis.
  • Glass Fence – A glass pool fence offers an unobstructed view of your pool and yard, making it a popular choice for modern homes and homeowners who want to feel like they’re on a permanent staycation. Glass is sleek and sophisticated, providing safety without compromising style.
  • Wooden Fences – Wooden fences bring a natural, warm look to your pool area and can offer a more private space. This can be an advantage for homes surrounded by closely situated neighbors or in public view that need a little outdoor privacy. Wood can be painted or stained to match your home’s exterior, and you can choose from an array of styles, from picket fences to classic or latticed designs.
  • Aluminum Fencing – Aluminum fences are durable, lightweight, and rust-resistant, making them a low-maintenance option. You can choose from different styles and designs to find one that suits your property. Aluminum fencing is considered easy to install and can be used in a variety of ground materials.

Choose Gappsi and Let Us Design and Build Your Backyard Swimming Pool!

  • Wrought iron – can be a stylish design choice for Mediterranean-style homes or traditional homes. It’s strong and protective, but it can rust. With proper maintenance, a wrought iron pool fence can last for years.
  • Steel Fences—Steel is a highly durable fence material that can withstand harsh weather conditions. However, periodic applications of rust-resistant coating may be needed to avoid corrosion, especially in high-humidity areas. Steel cable railing fences are perfect for contemporary homes.
  • Vinyl Fences – You can choose low-maintenance vinyl or PVC fences in various designs and colors. Vinyl fences are cost-effective and weather-resistant.
  • Mesh Fences—Mesh fences are a low-cost option that is ideal if good visibility of the splash zone is a priority. They’re highly durable yet easy to install and remove, making them suitable as a temporary option for those who only need a pool fence during certain times of the year due to seasonal changes.
  • Composite Fences—Composite fences are usually made of vinyl, wood flour, and recycled plastics, making them a green choice that’s good for the planet and minimizes environmental impact. They’re a versatile option that combines the look of wood with the durability of synthetic materials.

gunite-swimming-pool-dune-road-westhampton-ny1Pool Pilings to Support Infrastructure

Will your pool require pilings, and what does this imply? Some swimming pools need a few pilings to support the infrastructure, while others need a great deal. It will all depend on the weight that the concrete structure will withstand, your pool’s size, and the soil.  Pools on piling can include steel, wood, or concrete cast in place or driven into the ground. Some pools will require helical piles created from steel and drilled into the ground with an auger. Concrete piling for pools can often be poured and is usually inexpensive. The kind of pool on pilings needed is the engineers’ soil boring test report. It is frequently based on the pool design and soil composition.

Gunite Swimming Pool Dune Road in Westhampton, NY

Gappsi recently built this gunite swimming pool on pilings on Dune Road in Westhampton, N.Y. Our team built a bench on one side of the pool facing the ocean with corner stairs. The pool coping we installed was shot-blasted black sandstone coping and honed.

The pool finish is black-dyed marble dusting. The surrounding pool deck is Ipe wood in 3-inch strips. Ipe wood decking is the gold standard for all hardwoods. Ipe is so great that it is naturally fire and bug-resistant. The railing is a see-through steel cable used so as not to block the view of the water across. This is the latest project built by Gappsi on Dune Road in Westhampton, NY.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a gunite pool such a good fit for a Westhampton home? Gunite is the perfect material for capturing that classic, elegant Hamptons style because it offers complete design freedom. Unlike pre-molded pools, gunite allows us to create any shape you can imagine, from a timeless rectangle to a freeform lagoon that blends naturally with your landscape. This flexibility means we can tailor the pool to your property’s specific layout and your home’s architecture, ensuring it looks like a seamless, integrated part of your backyard retreat.

How long does it take to build a custom gunite pool? While every project is unique, we pride ourselves on creating efficient and realistic timelines. A typical gunite pool construction involves several stages, including excavation, plumbing, steel reinforcement, gunite application, and finishing touches like tile and plaster. We manage every step carefully and keep you informed along the way. Our extensive experience in the area helps us anticipate local requirements and keep the project moving smoothly, so you can start enjoying your pool as soon as possible.

Can you help design the area around the pool, like the patio and landscaping? Absolutely. We specialize in creating complete, cohesive backyard environments, not just installing pools. Our team includes expert landscape and masonry designers who will work with you to plan the perfect patio, walkways, and plantings. We can build everything from a classic Pennsylvania Bluestone deck to a modern porcelain tile surround, and even add structures like a pool house or pavilion to create a fully functional outdoor living space.

My current pool looks old and tired. What are my options? You have several great options, and we can help you decide which is best. We can completely renovate your existing gunite pool by updating the interior finish, replacing the tile, and adding modern features like new lighting or a spa. This can make it feel brand new. If you have an old vinyl liner pool, we also specialize in converting them to gunite, which gives you a much more durable, beautiful, and long-lasting result.

What are some of the most popular custom features people are adding to their pools? Many of our clients are adding features that turn their pool into a true destination for relaxation and entertainment. Integrated spas are incredibly popular, as are elegant water features like sheer descent waterfalls that create a soothing sound. For a resort-like feel, swim-up bars are a fantastic addition. We also install modern LED lighting systems that can change color with the touch of a button and saltwater systems for softer, gentler water.

Key Takeaways

  • Choose gunite for ultimate design freedom: This construction method allows for any custom shape, size, or integrated feature like a spa or waterfall, ensuring your pool is truly one-of-a-kind.
  • Think beyond the pool itself: A cohesive backyard retreat integrates the pool design with the surrounding patio, landscaping, and outdoor structures to create a seamless and functional living space.
  • Prioritize local experience for a smoother project: A builder with deep roots in Westhampton understands the area’s unique building codes and coastal environment, which prevents delays and ensures your pool is built to last.

Commercial Gunite Swimming Pool Renovation | Long Island NY

View Gappsi’s YouTube Channel for Videos on Commercial Gunite Swimming Pool Renovation | Long Island, N.Y.

Commercial gunite swimming pool renovation can include resurfacing, repairs, and design changes. When it comes to swimming pool gunite renovations, Gappsi has you covered. Gunite, also known as shotcrete, is popular in swimming pools due to its durability and longevity. Over time, however, your gunite pool may begin to crack or leak and show signs of wear. Our team is experienced in commercial gunite swimming pool renovation, and we use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to ensure that your pool is restored to its former glory.

In our recent project at the Engineer Country Club in Glen Head, N.Y., we remodeled the commercial gunite swimming pool.  We removed some of the old surfaces that were in the pool. Initially, the Engineers Club had to replace the marble dust finish with a custom liner because of a pool leak. They continued to have issues with the pool, so our team removed the liner, and we are fixing the old gunite shell.  The loose material and the watered cement were removed. Then, the entire pool was coated, and the new shotcrete was added.

commercial-gunite-swimming-pool-renovation-long-island-ny-1Existing swimming pool structures often require minor and major repairs and extensive remodeling. However, removing and replacing portions of a pool structure is perfectly acceptable.

Here are Some Ways to Fix a Commerical Gunite Swimming Pool:

  • Patch small cracks – Small cracks and minor damage can be fixed with pool patching materials.
  • Resurface the pool
  • Rehabilitate the pool – A gunite rehab project can include removing concrete, replumbing, adding new features, redoing the gunite shell, and plastering.

We applied the pool’s finish, which consists of white quartz. A pool finish made of white quartz combines white Portland cement, crushed quartz, and other additives. The quartz gives the pool a textured surface and a range of colors. Quartz pool finishes are known for their durability, resistance to staining, and aesthetic appeal.

commercial-gunite-swimming-pool-renovation-long-island-ny-2Which Pool Surface is Suitable for You?

The surface of your pool can change its fundamental look. If you are bored by your pool or its surface and could use repairs, consider hiring a Gappsi pool service to resurface it. Here are three different types of pool finishes that can improve the look of your whole backyard.

  • Plaster – has been one of the most used pool finishes since the 1960s. This surface is hard yet smooth and appears white. Plaster can make your pool water appear bright, clean, and light blue. It is also considered one of the most affordable pool resurfacing methods.
  • Pebble—Pebble pool surfaces begin with a layer of specially formulated cement. This cement contains small pebbles and stones, contributing to a more natural aesthetic for your backyard. Pebbles and stones come in various colors, so you can choose something that matches your patio. The texture of the pool is rougher than plaster and quartz finishes and may be rough on children’s feet and hard on automatic vacuum systems.
  • Quartz—Quartz pool finishes combine quartz aggregate with polymer-modified cement, technically making them a plaster surface. Quartz surfaces are, in many ways, the best of plaster and pebble finishes.

Adding a Swim Lane to a Gunite Pool

A swim lane is a designated area in a pool for swimmers to swim in without crossing paths with other swimmers. Floating lane ropes and markings on the bottom of the pool mark swim lanes. Gappsi added a swim lane to the existing pool at the Engineers Club. In addition, we used tile on the floor of the swim lane to differentiate it. Adding a swim lane is perfect for providing an environment for those who want to work on their fitness, build stamina, or improve their swimming times.

Installing Tile Over Gunite/Shotcrete

Our team installed tiles on the steps and divided the deep part of the pool with a tile line as well.  Gunite or shotcrete pools offer unmatched flexibility when it comes to design and tile options. These pools can be fully or partially tiled, giving you endless possibilities to create a truly unique and personalized oasis. Whether you prefer a simple, elegant look or a more elaborate, intricate design, concrete pools allow you to bring your vision to life with complete customization.

commercial-gunite-swimming-pool-renovation-long-island-ny-3What’s the Best Tile for a Pool?

When tiling your pool, there are several areas where tile can be applied to make it more functional and beautiful. Glass and ceramics are good pool tile materials, and glass tile is water—and scratch-resistant. It can be used in hot pools to retain the durability of ceramic tile and the delicate translucence of glass. In pool construction, glazed tile is a strong barrier against chemical damage. Ceramic tile is also good for pool installations if the glaze is acid-resistant.

  • Waterline Tile

Waterline tile is installed at the water’s surface level, serving decorative and functional purposes. It adds a stylish touch to your pool and helps conceal water level fluctuations. Additionally, it protects the pool structure from the damaging effects of sun exposure, chemicals, and temperature changes, making it a practical and aesthetic enhancement for any pool.

  • Accent Tile

Trim tile creates a clean edge around steps, benches, and other pool features. It finishes off your pool and can be the same as or different from the main pool tile.

  • Spotters

Spotters are small, often colorful tiles used to indicate depth changes or highlight specific areas in the pool. While primarily serving as essential safety features, they also add a touch of visual interest, enhancing the overall design of your pool tile layout.

commercial-gunite-swimming-pool-renovation-long-island-ny-4Choosing the right tile for your pool involves many factors, including the pool type, style, and budget. Whether you choose porcelain, glass, or stone tile, your pool tile can turn your backyard or country club into a paradise.

Gunite Pool Mastic Beach: A Homeowner’s Guide

gunite-pool-renovation-smithtown-nyA traditional gunite pool renovation typically includes repairing or replacing the tile, coping, patio, skimmer, and pool surface.  In Smithtown NY we rebuilt most of the Gunite swimming pool due to the wall’s deterioration.  Often in New York, we face unique challenges due to the harsh regional climates, including severe freeze-thaw cycles and intense summer heat, which requires gunite pool resurfacing.

Your gunite pool is the heart of your backyard oasis. As a premier gunite pool builder in Smithtown, NY, we know you want it to stay perfect. But over time, you might notice issues like cracks, stains, or peeling plaster. This is a common concern for pool owners from Smithtown to Nesconset. Protecting your investment is key. The secret to a long-lasting pool isn’t just the initial build; it’s the details, like the flexible gunite pool mastic that protects your backyard beach entry and coping. Understanding the signs of deterioration is the first step to keeping your pool looking its best.

Factors that can cause deterioration include:

  • Water chemistry: Aggressive water chemistry, such as pH levels that are too high or too low, can break down cementitious products over time.
  • Poor water balance, such as low calcium hardness, can also cause pitting.
  • Repetitive impact: Abrasion or impact to the surface coating can also cause deterioration
  • Maintenance practices: The quality of the plaster and maintenance practices can also affect its lifespan.

Gappsi specializes in breathing new life into aging pools. Our commitment to sustainable practices ensures that every renovation extends your pool’s longevity and environmental footprint.  Check out our swimming pool gallery today!

Negative Edge Trough

Gappsi rebuilt the entire trough including new negative edge tiles and a marble top.  A negative edge is when only one side of the pool is lower than the deck level. The homeowners feel that the water is disappearing into nature from the house or deck. Of course, a visual effect.  It is undoubtedly best known because it has a significant aesthetic impact. It reveals all its beauty on the ground with a slope, but it can create a beautiful effect on almost flat land.gunite-pool-renovation-smithtown-ny1Porcelain Tiles for Waterline – Gunite Pool Renovation

Waterline tiles are a must-have for inground gunite pools, as they protect the perimeter and make it easier to remove buildup from hard water and other sources. They can also prevent a yellow ring from forming around the pool’s edge due to sunscreen, body oil, and other substances. Waterline tiles can also be used to customize the look of the pool with different designs.  On this Gunite pool renovation, we installed new porcelain tiles on the waterline.

Porcelain tiles are a great choice for gunite pool waterlines because they are durable, non-porous, and resistant to water, chemicals, and UV rays. They are also easy to clean and come in many colors, patterns, and finishes. Porcelain tiles can be used submerged in the pool as well as at the waterline.

Hydrazzo Gulfstream Blue Finish

Hydrazzo Interior Finish is a silky smooth texture, combined with the proven durability of exposed aggregates, which are two prime features of this state-of-the-art pool finish.  As part of the complete renovation for the gunite pool, we used Hydrazzo Gulfstream Blue finish.  Hydrazzo Gulfstream Blue is a polished pool finish made from natural ingredients like marble, white Portland cement, and other performance-enhancing ingredients. It’s known for its smooth, luxurious texture and durability, and is resistant to stains, algae, and scale adhesion. Hydrazzo Gulfstream Blue is also easy to apply and polish and can be re-polished to look new at any time.

gunite-pool-renovation-smithtown-ny2Here are some other benefits of Hydrazzo Gulfstream Blue:

  • Low maintenance
  • Non-slip surface
  • Friendly to swimsuits, toes, and fingers
  • Life expectancy of 15–20 years
  • Complements many pool designs

Pool Step Markers

We added step markers in the gunite pool renovation serving a dual roll in any pool. First and foremost is safety. Without step markers, the edges of steps, Baja shelves, and tanning ledges are difficult to identify beneath the water’s surface. This can ultimately create a fall or drowning hazard. The second role is more cosmetic. Step markers add a pop of personality to your pool. By choosing dolphins, turtles, starfish, or any other variety of markers you can add a bit of character while making your pool safer for all.

MagicStream Laminars – Arcs of Illuminated Water

We added to the pool renovation 4 MagicStream Laminars.  They offer an elegant, dramatic arc of water into the pool.  MagicStream Laminars with 100% synchronization with IntelliBrite 5g LED color and white lights create clear, uniform arcs of moving water that originate from either a pool deck or the surrounding landscape. At night, these translucent streams are brilliantly colored, creating a water effect that adds elegant entertainment to your poolscape. It is fully compatible with the IntelliBrite 5g line of LED pool lights, the optional Color Sync™ Controller for Pentair Color LED Pool Lights, and the EasyTouch® or IntelliTouch® Automation Systems. Custom program and control light show using an indoor control panel, wireless remote, and the ScreenLogic® Interface using your smartphone, computer, or mobile digital device.

gunite-pool-renovation-smithtown-ny3Pool Spa with Bluestone Coping

In our latest renovation, we rebuilt the spa and replumbed it for better efficiency.  We added a bluestone coping also.  Bluestone makes perfect pool coping due to its non-slip properties. Elevate your pool spa design with our premium bluestone coping. Pool coping protects the pool shell and brings the swimming pool level with the pool deck. Coping also adds a decorative touch to your pool perimeter, and keeps your pool or spa cool to the touch and safe for individuals getting in or out. Whether you are designing your new pool or renovating the coping on an existing pool, our team is available to answer any questions you have about pool and spa coping.

Heat Up Your Pools Design with Fire

We installed two gas fire features.  Turn up the heat and make a splash by adding a fiery twist to your pool design with a fire bowl. Not only do pools with fire bowls pack a visual punch, but they also amp up the atmosphere and make your pool the place to be.  Elevate your poolside paradise with mesmerizing fire pits, adding a splash of luxury and turning your backyard into a lavish resort-like dream!

From rustic charm to contemporary chic, these enticing flame features radiate warmth and allure for your outdoor festivities while also boosting the value of your house!

What is a Gunite Pool?

If you’re dreaming of a custom backyard pool, you’ve likely come across the term “gunite.” So, what exactly is it? A gunite pool is a type of concrete pool renowned for its durability and design flexibility. The name comes from the construction method, where a dry mix of cement and sand is shot through a high-pressure hose. Water is added at the nozzle, creating a concrete material called gunite. This mixture is then sprayed over a steel reinforcement grid, or rebar, that has been shaped into your desired pool design. This process creates a dense, strong, and monolithic pool shell that can be molded into virtually any shape or size you can imagine.

Unlike pre-molded fiberglass pools, gunite construction happens right in your backyard, allowing for a truly bespoke creation. Whether you envision a freeform lagoon, a classic rectangle, or a complex design with built-in waterfalls and spas, gunite makes it possible. After the gunite shell cures, it’s finished with a smooth layer of plaster, pebble aggregate, or tile, which waterproofs the structure and gives the pool its final, beautiful appearance. This combination of a reinforced steel core and a concrete shell results in an incredibly robust and long-lasting swimming pool that becomes a permanent, valuable addition to your home.

How Gunite Pools Are Made

Building a gunite pool is a meticulous process that transforms your backyard from a blank canvas into a stunning oasis. It all starts with a detailed design phase where every curve and feature is planned. Once the design is finalized, the area is excavated to the specified shape and depth. Next, a complex web of steel rebar is installed, forming the structural skeleton of the pool. This framework is crucial as it provides the tensile strength to support the concrete shell. Plumbers then strategically install all the necessary piping for filtration, jets, and any water features before the gunite application begins.

The magic happens when the gunite crew arrives. They expertly spray the concrete mixture over the rebar cage, building up the walls and floor to the required thickness. This application method creates a single, seamless structure with incredible strength. After the gunite is applied, it needs to cure for several weeks, a critical step for ensuring maximum durability. Finally, a waterproof finish like plaster or an aggregate is applied, along with coping and tile, completing the transformation. It’s a detailed construction project that requires true expertise, which is why partnering with an experienced builder is essential for a successful outcome.

The Gunite Shell and Waterproofing

A common misconception about gunite pools is that the shell itself is waterproof from the moment it’s sprayed. In reality, the raw gunite structure is porous. During the curing process, it’s normal to see some water seepage if it rains, but this is not a cause for alarm. The structural integrity comes from the dense concrete and rebar combination, but the waterproofing comes from the final interior finish. This finishing layer, typically plaster, pebble aggregate, or tile, is applied after the gunite shell has fully cured and hardened. It acts as a waterproof membrane, preventing water from penetrating the concrete shell and the ground beneath it.

This final surface does more than just hold water; it also defines the pool’s aesthetic and texture. A smooth plaster finish provides a classic look, while an aggregate finish offers a more textured, natural feel and can come in a variety of colors. The quality of this final layer is just as important as the gunite shell itself. A properly applied finish ensures your pool remains beautiful and leak-free for years, protecting the significant investment you’ve made in your backyard retreat. It’s the crucial last step in creating a durable and watertight swimming environment.

Pros and Cons of Gunite Pools

When deciding on the perfect pool for your home, it’s important to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of each type. Gunite pools are a top choice for many homeowners, especially those seeking a custom, high-end look. Their biggest selling point is unparalleled design freedom. You aren’t limited to standard shapes or sizes; if you can dream it, a skilled builder can likely create it with gunite. This makes them ideal for integrating unique features like tanning ledges, built-in seating, and intricate water features. Furthermore, gunite pools are exceptionally durable. The steel-reinforced concrete shell is built to last for decades, withstanding ground movement and the harsh Long Island climate better than many alternatives.

However, these benefits come with a few considerations. The initial cost of a gunite pool is typically higher than that of vinyl liner or fiberglass options due to the extensive labor and materials involved. The construction process is also longer, often taking several months from excavation to the first swim. Gunite pools also require more hands-on maintenance. The porous nature of the plaster finish can be a breeding ground for algae if water chemistry isn’t carefully managed. Over time, the pool will also need to be resurfaced, an expense to plan for down the road. Understanding these factors helps you make an informed decision that aligns with your budget, timeline, and lifestyle.

Advantages of Gunite Pools

The primary advantages of choosing a gunite pool are rooted in its strength and versatility. Homeowners who want a pool that is a true centerpiece of their backyard landscape often find that gunite is the only option that meets their creative vision. Because they are built on-site, gunite pools can be tailored to fit any space, accommodate complex designs, and seamlessly incorporate surrounding features like patios and landscaping. This level of customization ensures your pool is not just a place to swim but a unique reflection of your personal style. The robust construction also means you are investing in a permanent home improvement that adds significant value to your property.

Design Flexibility

The single greatest advantage of a gunite pool is the limitless design flexibility it offers. Unlike fiberglass pools that come in predetermined shapes, a gunite pool is a custom-built structure. This allows you to design a pool that perfectly fits the contours of your yard and your family’s needs. You can create sweeping curves, sharp angles, multiple levels, and varying depths. It’s also easy to integrate luxurious features directly into the pool’s structure, such as a vanishing edge, a relaxing spa, a shallow beach entry for kids, or even a swim-up bar. This creative freedom extends to the finish, where you can choose from a wide array of porcelain tiles, stones, and colored aggregates to achieve the exact look you desire.

Durability

When it comes to strength and longevity, gunite pools are in a class of their own. The combination of a steel rebar framework and a thick, sprayed concrete shell creates an incredibly strong and durable structure. This robust construction makes them highly resistant to damage from ground shifts and the extreme freeze-thaw cycles we experience here on Long Island. While other pool types might be susceptible to punctures or warping, a well-built gunite pool is engineered to last for generations. This inherent toughness means you are investing in a permanent feature of your home that, with proper care, will provide enjoyment for many decades to come.

Disadvantages and Risks of Gunite Pools

While gunite pools offer incredible benefits, it’s equally important to be aware of the potential downsides. The very nature of their custom, on-site construction leads to a higher price tag and a more extended installation timeline compared to other pool types. The maintenance requirements are also more intensive, as the plaster surface needs regular brushing and careful chemical balancing to prevent staining and algae growth. Finally, the quality of the final product is heavily dependent on the skill of the installer, making it crucial to choose a reputable and experienced pool builder to avoid potential long-term issues.

Higher Initial Cost

There’s no getting around it: gunite pools are a significant investment. The initial cost is generally higher than for vinyl liner or fiberglass pools. This price difference is due to the intensive labor, specialized equipment, and raw materials required for construction. From the detailed excavation and intricate steelwork to the professional application of the gunite and plaster, every step is a custom job. While the long-term durability can offset some of this cost over the pool’s lifetime, you need to be prepared for a larger upfront expense when planning your budget for a gunite pool project.

Longer Construction Time

Patience is a virtue when building a gunite pool. The construction process is not a quick one and can take anywhere from three to six months, or sometimes longer, depending on the project’s complexity and weather conditions. Each stage requires time, from excavation and plumbing to installing the rebar. The most significant waiting period is the curing phase, where the gunite shell must sit and harden for about 28 days before the final interior finish can be applied. This extended timeline is necessary to ensure a strong, durable final product, but it’s a factor you must consider when planning for your new pool.

Maintenance Needs

A gunite pool requires consistent and diligent maintenance to keep it looking its best. The plaster or aggregate surface, while durable, is porous. This means it can be susceptible to algae growth and staining if the water chemistry is not properly maintained. Regular brushing of the pool surface is necessary to remove any potential buildup. Additionally, because of the cement-based surface, you may need to use more chemicals to keep the pH levels balanced. Over a decade or more, the surface will eventually need to be acid washed or completely resurfaced, which is a significant maintenance expense to anticipate.

Installation Risks

The success of a gunite pool project rests almost entirely on the expertise of the builder. An inexperienced contractor can make critical errors during any phase of construction, from improperly shaping the rebar cage to applying the gunite unevenly. These mistakes can lead to serious structural problems down the line, including cracks, leaks, and “pop-ups,” where the pool shell can lift out of the ground. This is why it is absolutely essential to vet your pool builder carefully. Choosing a company like Gappsi, with a long-standing reputation for expert masonry and pool construction, minimizes these risks and ensures your investment is built to last.

How Long Do Gunite Pools Last?

One of the most compelling reasons to invest in a gunite pool is its incredible lifespan. A well-built and properly maintained gunite swimming pool can easily last for 50 years or more, with many lasting for a century. The structural shell itself, composed of steel and concrete, is built to be a permanent fixture. While the pool’s structure is incredibly long-lasting, the interior surface, such as the plaster or aggregate finish, has a shorter lifespan. Typically, a plaster finish will need to be redone every 10 to 15 years, depending on maintenance and water chemistry. This resurfacing process revitalizes the pool’s appearance and restores its waterproof seal, essentially giving it a new life.

The longevity of your gunite pool is directly tied to the quality of its construction and the consistency of its maintenance. Regular care, including balanced water chemistry, routine cleaning, and timely repairs to equipment and fixtures, will protect your investment. Addressing small issues before they become large problems is key. For example, maintaining the mastic joint around the pool’s edge can prevent costly water damage to the pool’s structure and surrounding deck. With diligent upkeep, your gunite pool will not only provide a lifetime of memories but will also remain a valuable and beautiful asset to your property for generations.

The Importance of Pool Mastic

When you look at a swimming pool, you probably notice the water, the tile, and the surrounding patio. But there’s a small, often overlooked component that plays a huge role in protecting your entire pool structure: the mastic. Pool mastic is the flexible, waterproof sealant that fills the expansion joint between your pool coping (the stone or concrete edge of the pool) and the pool deck. This joint is intentionally designed to allow the pool shell and the deck to expand and contract independently with temperature changes, preventing them from cracking or pushing against each other. The mastic acts as a flexible bridge in this gap, keeping everything sealed and protected.

Without functional mastic, this expansion joint becomes a channel for water. Rainwater, splashes from the pool, and water from cleaning the deck can seep into the gap and get underneath your coping and deck. Over time, this water can erode the soil supporting the pool’s structure, leading to shifting, cracking, and potentially catastrophic damage to the pool shell itself. In a climate like Long Island’s, this is especially critical. During the winter, any trapped water will freeze and expand, exerting immense pressure that can crack tiles, dislodge coping stones, and damage the pool’s bond beam. In short, that small strip of sealant is your first line of defense against very expensive structural repairs.

What is Pool Mastic and Why is it Important?

Pool mastic is a specialized, commercial-grade sealant, typically made of polyurethane, designed to be both flexible and durable. Its primary job is to create a watertight seal in the expansion joint around your pool’s perimeter. This seal is crucial because it prevents water from penetrating the ground beneath your pool deck and behind your pool wall. If water gets into this area, it can cause soil erosion, which can lead to the deck sinking or cracking and can even compromise the structural integrity of the pool itself. The mastic’s flexibility allows it to stretch and compress as the deck and pool shell expand and contract with changing temperatures, ensuring the seal remains intact year-round.

Pool Mastic Maintenance and Replacement

Pool mastic is not a lifetime product; it’s a maintenance item that needs to be inspected regularly and replaced periodically. Generally, mastic has a lifespan of about five to ten years. Exposure to UV rays, pool chemicals, and constant temperature fluctuations will eventually cause it to dry out, crack, and pull away from the sides of the joint. You should visually inspect your mastic at the beginning and end of each pool season. Look for any signs of cracking, peeling, or gaps. If you see any deterioration, it’s time to have it replaced. Delaying this simple repair can lead to much more complex and costly problems, making mastic replacement one of the most important preventative maintenance tasks for any pool owner.

Gunite Pool Renovation and Upgrades

Even the most well-built gunite pool will eventually show its age. After a decade or more, the plaster surface may become stained or rough, tiles can crack, and the overall look might feel dated. The great thing about gunite pools is that they are completely renewable. A full renovation can transform an old, tired pool into a modern masterpiece that looks and feels brand new. At Gappsi, we specialize in breathing new life into aging pools, handling everything from simple resurfacing to complete structural makeovers. A renovation is the perfect opportunity to not only restore your pool’s beauty but also to add features you’ve always wanted.

Upgrades can range from cosmetic enhancements to functional improvements. You might choose to replace your old waterline tile with modern porcelain, switch to a durable and beautiful aggregate finish, or replace worn coping with elegant natural stone. This is also the ideal time to add exciting new features. Imagine incorporating a relaxing spa, a dramatic waterfall, or energy-efficient LED lighting to create a stunning nighttime ambiance. You could also add a tanning ledge for lounging or deck jets for a playful touch. A professional renovation allows you to update your pool to match your current style and enhance your family’s enjoyment for years to come. You can explore our swimming pool gallery to see how we’ve transformed pools across Long Island.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if my gunite pool needs a full renovation instead of just a simple repair? Look for signs that go beyond a single cracked tile. If the surface feels rough like sandpaper on your feet, has stains that chemicals won’t remove, or you see widespread cracking (often called crazing), it’s likely time to consider a renovation. These issues indicate the interior finish is nearing the end of its life. A renovation addresses the core surface, ensuring the pool is properly sealed and looks brand new again.

A gunite pool sounds expensive. Is the long-term value really worth the initial cost? It’s true that the upfront cost is higher, but it’s helpful to think of it as a permanent home investment. Because of their steel-reinforced concrete structure, gunite pools last for generations. Their durability in Long Island’s climate is unmatched. This longevity, combined with the complete freedom to create a custom design that adds significant value to your property, makes the initial investment pay off over the many decades you’ll enjoy it.

My pool’s surface is in decent shape, but the style feels outdated. Can I just upgrade the features? Absolutely. This is one of the best things about having a gunite pool. You don’t always need a complete overhaul to make a big impact. You can modernize your space by adding new features like dramatic fire bowls, elegant waterfalls, or energy-efficient LED lighting. Updating the waterline tile or replacing old coping with a beautiful natural stone are also fantastic ways to refresh your pool’s entire look without the time and expense of a full resurfacing.

What is the most important maintenance task I should focus on to protect my gunite pool? Besides keeping your water chemistry balanced to protect the interior finish, the most critical task is inspecting your pool mastic. That’s the flexible sealant between your pool edge and the patio. If you see it cracking or pulling away, get it replaced. This simple step prevents water from seeping underneath your deck and compromising the pool’s entire structure, saving you from incredibly expensive repairs down the road.

How long does a major gunite pool renovation typically take to complete? The timeline really depends on the scope of the project. A straightforward resurfacing with new tile might take a few weeks. However, if your renovation involves significant changes like rebuilding a spa, adding new plumbing for water features, and redoing the patio, it could take a couple of months. Weather also plays a role, but a professional team will give you a clear schedule based on your specific project.

Key Takeaways

  • Embrace Customization with a Plan: Gunite pools provide unmatched design flexibility and long-term durability, but they require a larger upfront investment and a longer build time. Acknowledge this trade-off by planning your budget and schedule carefully to create a truly custom backyard oasis.
  • Modernize Through Renovation: Your gunite pool is completely renewable. Use a renovation to not only replace dated surfaces with new tiles and finishes but also to incorporate modern upgrades like a spa, fire features, or energy-efficient lighting to transform your entire outdoor space.
  • Protect Your Investment with Key Maintenance: A gunite pool’s structure can last for generations, but its surfaces need care. Focus on two key tasks: periodically replacing the mastic sealant to prevent water damage and planning for resurfacing every 10 to 15 years to keep your pool beautiful and watertight.

This backyard and pool renovation was done by Gappsi in East Islip NY. This job was originally done by Gappsi 30 Yrs ago in 1993, it is now 2023. The new renovation project consists of rebuilding the outside wall with all-natural stones.  The patio pavers we used were full-color NY Bluestone flagstone random sizes. The original pool was a 20×40 with an extended swing lane on this side. For the renovation that we did, we made the pool square kept one side of the swim lane, and built a sundeck within the pool.

Your swimming pool is a key part of your home. It’s where you spend quality time with your loved ones, wind down after work, and exercise, so it pays to ensure it perfectly meets your needs and preferences.

The basis of any poolscape is the existing location. It can mean disguising between an exciting party spot or a relaxing spa scene. We consider the architecture of the home and the living spaces, as well as the existing landform and landscape.

Why Gunite Pools Have the Most Longevity?

Choosing between gunite and vinyl pools can be difficult, but there are some differences in the longevity of each pool. The longevity of your pool depends on the maintenance, cleaning, and chemicals you use.

Gunite is a specific type of concrete, a blend of cement, sand, and water, sprayed through a hose. The dry mix of cement and sand is mixed with water as it’s being applied. Typically, the gunite is sprayed onto a framework of steel reinforcing bars that comprise the pool structure.

Unlike vinyl liner pools, concrete pools are not premade. You can customize your concrete pool right down to the color of the water.  Not only are concrete pools the most popular and highly customizable, but they have the longest lifespan compared to a vinyl liner pool. Concrete pools require a little more maintenance than the vinyl options, but these pools will last much longer with proper care.

In the latest Gappsi pool renovation in East Islip NY, we designed and built this pool over 30 years ago.  We reshaped the gunite pool and changed the pool decking.  The original pool was built in 1993 over 30 years ago by Gappsi showing the timelessness and longevity of choosing a Gappsi Gunite pool.

Can You Redesign an Existing Pool by Changing the Shape or Size of the Pool?

Yes, you can redesign the pool and add to it, that is the beauty of a concrete pool.  Our gunite pool renovation included reshaping the pool and adding a sundeck.  Whether you’re unhappy with the size, the shape, the depth, or maybe just the overall look of the pool, you might be interested in a swimming pool remodel. Whether you inherited this pool upon buying a home or you had it installed many years ago, and it’s become dated there are options for you.

During this latest pool restoration, our team acid-washed the pool and removed all the old pavers.  Acid washing a pool removes stains, mineral deposits, algae, and other buildup from the pool’s surface. It can also remove chlorine and dirt stains.

The porous nature of concrete allows for algae to grow quickly, so it is important to clean the pool walls and floor regularly. Acid washing is one form of maintenance for concrete pools.  This is typically only done every 3-5 years to prevent algae and bacteria buildup on the surface of the pool.

Natural Stone Wall

The project consisted of rebuilding the outside wall with all-natural stones. The clients love the natural stone look. It’s a dry stacked natural stone wall built all around the pool. The pool was raised out of the ground originally because it is on a bay and the water table is high. The patio pavers we used were full-color NY Bluestone Flagstone in random sizes.

The original pool was a 20×40 with an extended swim lane on one side. For the pool renovation, we made the pool square but kept one side of the pool with a swim lane.

gunite-pool-renovation-and-redesign-in-east-islip-ny4Sun Deck, Sun Shelf, Tanning Ledge, or Baja Shelf They are All the Same

We built a sun deck, with curb steps in the upgraded pool design.  A tanning shelf or tanning ledge is the perfect feature to add to an existing swimming pool while under renovation.  A tanning shelf is an area inside the pool perimeter that sits just about 6-8″ below water. The area is larger than your entry steps, usually running about 5-6′ in length and width, commonly featuring a bubbler or umbrella.  Being one of the most prevalent add-ons to a pool design, the function of a tanning shelf stretches from child’s play to adult relaxation. The family dog even appreciates a cool place to escape the New York heat.

gunite-pool-renovation-and-redesign-in-east-islip-7Porcelain Tile Accents For Your Pools Waterline

The clients chose to add porcelain tiles to the waterline of the pool.  Choosing the right tile can enhance the visual appeal of your pool while providing durability and ease of maintenance.  Porcelain tile is known for its strength, resistance to fading, and low maintenance requirements. With a variety of colors, patterns, and textures to choose from, porcelain tile offers versatility and durability for waterline applications. It’s an excellent choice for achieving a timeless and sophisticated look for your pool.

We installed 2×2 tiles to accent the edges of the steps and sundeck.

Gulfstream Hydrazzo Finish

This polished pool surface creates a finish unlike any other pool plaster available on the market.  Hydrazzo was the first polished pool finish in the industry. For over 20 years the company has produced the product in the USA. A silky smooth polished texture combined with the proven durability of exposed aggregates are prime features of this state-of-the-art pool plaster finish.

With 15+ unique color options and a natural variegated appearance, Hydrazzo compliments all poolscape designs. The polished pool surface creates a finish unlike any other pool plaster available on the market today. It is naturally resistant to spot etching, topical stains, permanent scale & algae adhesion.

Some of the most beautiful pools in the world are surfaced with the hand-polished magic of Hydrazzo. It is the smoothest, richest, and most luxurious surface available. Hydrazzo combines naturally beautiful coarse-graded crystalline and colored marble, along with white Portland cement and a host of other performance-enhancing ingredients. The results are like no other.

Automatic Saftey Covers for Pools Saves Time and Money

During the renovation, we added an automatic pool safety cover.  Our under-track automatic pool cover is the top choice for new pool and spa installations and pool remodeling projects. The cover’s tracks are installed under the pool’s coping during the construction process, giving you the most seamless and aesthetically pleasing installation possible. The under-track model is compatible with any rectangular pool and can also be designed to work with some custom pool shapes and features.

4 Reasons to Add an Automatic Safety Cover

  • Keep your pool clean: Your automatic pool cover will keep dirt and debris out of your pool, greatly reducing the amount of time you’ll spend skimming and vacuuming. When you’re ready to use your pool, your retractable cover will roll open with just the touch of a button to reveal sparkling clean water!
  • Conserve water. Pools that aren’t covered can lose as much as 2” of water per week. As water rates continue to rise, your automatic pool cover can save you hundreds of dollars every year by preventing evaporation and helping you conserve every precious drop of water in your pool.
  • Maintain your ideal water temperature. A few chilly nights can bring your pool water’s temperature down. Your automatic pool cover will help maintain your pool water at the ideal temperature, so it’s swim-ready, whenever you are. Not only does it retain heat but it can also be used to add heat to your pool water.
  • Conserve chemicals. When water evaporates from your swimming pool, those expensive chemicals added to the water evaporate with it. Your automatic pool cover will help you keep those chemicals in your pool water, where they belong, allowing you to spend less time and money on your pool and more time in your pool!
